Castlevania III Dracula's Curse Part 1: The one with 100% less edgy writing
Castlevania III is often viewed as one of the best games in the series, at least within the context of the Classic games
And...yeah this is absolutely one of my favorite games in the series! I have my issues here and there but overall this is pretty much Castlevania 1 but more.
More stages and longer to boot. More obstacles. More music better graphics and even more characters!
Graphically this may just be one of the best games of the era, just a great level of detail in the backgrounds that help give this game a genuinely haunting looking atmosphere even more than its predecessors.
Music wise this game is one of the best in the franchise, ESPECIALLY the Japanese Famicom version which featured enhanced audio thanks to the greater memory space and other technical stuff
I’m playing a translated Japanese rom because, as many know, the international versions of this game had its difficulty tampered with in questionable ways.
Generally speaking damage is now dictated by level rather than enemies. What this means is that in the early stages enemies and bosses will be weaker but by the end they’ll be much harder. Add to this some slightly altered enemy placement to be a bit more dickish and some nerfed moves here and there and we have a recipe for frustration
And believe me: this game is already more than hard enough as it is!
The main new feature of this game are partners! You can unlock 3 new characters though you can only bring one of them with you alongside Trevor
Here we see Grant! Anyone not recognizing him may have started with the Netflix show where he dodged a massive bullet by not being featured
Poor Grant is like the ugly duckling of Castlevania 3: he’s barely mentioned in futire games and he doesn’t really have much of a legacy unlike the others
Unfortunately I’ll continue this tradition since I will only make 2 playthroughs of this game, one for each major level route, which means one of them has to be with Alucard as a partner and the other either Grant or Sypha...and the latter is my favorite in the game so sorry man
Anyway Grant should definitely shut up everyone who claims that Classicvanias had stiff controls because they’re “old”, since he can actually move in midair!
Granted the jump still feels heavy so it’s still not very graceful, but this still means Grant is a more mobile character than the others
His main ability is being able to climb over any surface. This can be used to essentially skip some platforming sections here and there and it makes Grant the most ideal character for pure level traversal. My only issue is that his climbing can be janky: when he takes a turn you have to immediately press the d-pad in the direction of the climbable surface otherwise you’ll just slip off. Sometimes if you take a turn too quickly you’ll slide off entirely.
He’s offensively weak though in the Japanese version his standard attack is actually an infinite throwing dagger, which is certainly much better than the dinky close range knife he has internationally
But we must say goodbye to Grant and welcome another new character, one that has the ability to truly break the game in various ways...

Castlevania Dracula’s Curse and I have a love hate relationship; I love it and it hates me (I am stuck on a level it is so so hard) . But yeah :3, the gang, the group, the travel companions.
Explanations and text under a cut as per usual:
Grant my bestie he is so cool and fun to draw, I love combining elements of his designs. I also think the fun little ponytail and a little stubble looks nice on him. Just a little side profile study :3
Trevor before the eye scar whoah no way :O! I love drawing him smiling, he radiates pure trustworthiness. His CV3 outfit also looks very comfy ngl, especially the cape—
Another Grant, this time in 3/4 view. :D
Full body Grant doodle >:D. The Grants are taking over oh no— Did you know the cool looking knife he has in a couple promotional artworks is an actual specific type of knife? I looked it up and the closest match is a Polish bandit knife, which is a type of knife that has a lot of variation in shape but always has a distinct curve downward towards the end, it’s pretty cool!
Chibi Grant :3
Sypha got rizz lol—
Some of the only Alucard doodles on this page alas, there wasn’t anymore room for more of him (T_T ). I like depicting him with shorter hair in CV3, it mixes his CV3 and SotN designs really nicely. I also think it’s funny making his outfit kinda Kid Dracula inspired lol. I’m pretty sure there is one CV3 concept art that has some similar elements augh it’s been a while since I’ve looked up CV3 Alucard arts. There’s also one Sypha doodle here too :3.
The next two are based on a couple like draw your ship memes I ran into, the second is specifically based off of that one “hot yaoi base” lmaoooooo. Anyway, I love Sypha she’s so cool. I need to draw her more often, I have too many design ideas aaaaa—
The text says “mercenary, knight, priest, outlander”, but I spelled mercenary wrong alas. Shout out to you if you know what that’s a reference to hehehehehe >:3c
Alright, goodnight guys, hope y’all appreciate ( ^3^) <3

Castlevania III Dracula's Curse Part 5: It's ok Alucard: we all gotta start somewhere!
And we’re back again! Only this time I’m taking a different route!
The game’s lower set of levels are its most atmospheric, truly great stuff that they manage out of the NES’ graphics and sound capabilities!
Unfortunately they are also the most questionable when it comes to their level design though that will mostly come into play in the next video...
In the meantime let’s all finally say hello to Alucard!
Yes, THAT Alucard
King of Pretty Boys, the Bishonen Prince, the Carrier of Boobs in the eyes of the Show
Alucard!
What? Don’t you recognize him?
Tumblr media
Well...admittedly he does have slightly different hair...
I’m pretty sure that if you were to go back in time and tell fans in 1989 that this guy would later go on to become one of the most iconic video game characters and an object of incredible thirst for fangirls all over they’d look at you as if you’d just grown a second head
And I’m not just talking about his design either, gameplay wise Alucard here is...kinda lame ngl
He’s offensively the weakest of the bunch, attacking with his “Balls of Destruction”, which can be upgraded to shoot up to 3 at a time but they have pitiful power and weirdly limited range and can only equip 2 subweapons, like Grant
His main ability is turning into a bat, consuming 1 heart per second, in order to fly over obstacles. This is indeed useful don’t get me wrong but when you really think about it it’s not all that different from Grant’s ability to stick to walls. True Alucard’s flight is completely unrestrained but you can only use Alucard for the game’s lower route (well unless you’re playing on a new game plus after beating the regular game but that would also be hard mode so ehh), while you unlock Grant in the second stage and can take him through all of the game’s paths, making him more versatile overall I think
Yeah... so much for being the son of Lord Dracula, I guess this explains why he’d wait for strong warriors with whom to join in order to fight his father: he’s basically fodder on his own!
But don’t worry Alucard: we all have our growing pains! Your time will eventually come and you’ll finally be able to get back at everyone who mocked you back in 1989!

Akumajo Densetsu/Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Japanese story manual translation
"15th century Europe. During the Dark Ages, there was a man feared by everybody. A man who ceased to be human. His name was Count Vlad Tepes, otherwise known as Dracula. His territory was located at the outskirts of Transylvania, at the Valachia territory, where he used forbidden arts to summon an evil god. The god granted him power and in exchange, he summoned several demons from the demon world in order to scorch and massacre the entire region of Valachia with darkness. He thought he could extend his presence even further and now he's plotting to take all over Europe. The Eastern Orthodox Church was desperate to solve this situation, that they immediately dispatched a powerful army to Valachia, but they never came back. As a last resort, the Pope made a request to a people in the underworld, people who possess powers. A pair of Vampire Hunters to end Valachia's oppresion. The first one that was entrusted by the Pope was Sypha Belnades from the Eastern Orthodox Church, an apprentice monk in pursuit of becoming a priest. Sypha's ability is a powerful type of magic that harness its power from the ambiance and can manipulate fire, ice and lightning bolts. Sypha's attacking strenght is great, but he doesn't use weapons and is most vulnerable to any damage received from an enemy's attack. Sypha lost his parents when he was young and was found wandering near the monastery, where he remained at the once-beautiful Valachia. Sypha knew that the place in his memories was now tainted and he accepted the pope's request to liberate Valachia. Around the same time, within Valachia, a group of rebels were secretly plotting to overthrow Count Dracula. However their human strenght wasn't enough and they were no match for Dracula's dark powers. Some of men were teared to pieces, others were sentenced to be impaled and some were transformed into hideous monsters. Grant Danasty, carefree man from Valachia was among them. Those who tainted their hand once don't know when to stop. Count Dracula was not sastified with the power he already had after selling his soul and body to the evil god and he wanted to have more. The contract he made with the god was also applied to his own son. The son opposed his father, who still had a human heart even after getting rid of his soul, and his own body was no longer human reminding him why he hates his father. However, he could not challenge him, who is a demon himself, as everything is against him fighting alone. Although his relationship to Dracula is a a cross he chose to carry as a burden, Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes opted to fight nonetheless. He changed his name to Alucard and infiltrated Valachia's underground with the purpose of destroying his father and restoring the beauty of Valachia and he began searching for a comrade that shared the same ideal. The Pope was in predicament once again. Sypha, the vampire hunter who was sent out to Valachia did not returned after the promised period. The Pope assumed that since Sypha didn't return, his mission was already a failure and he was more likely dead by now. This is when a genuine Vampire Hunter from the Belmont family appears to fullfil the Pope's request. The Belmont family, with their tenacious willpower and seemingly endless strenght were treated no differently from the actual vampires and were just as feared. Because of this, the Belmont family lived far away from common people, becoming almost legendary. The Pope searched in all directions until he met a man with Belmont bloodline. A long haired young man who was Trevor C. Belmont. We journey back in time more than a hundred years before Simon Belmont's time, when the the battle between Dracula and mankind began."

Because Tumblr sucks and apparently 7 pages worth of gushing over Trevor Belmont is too much for this site to handle, here's my rambling in a Google Doc. https://docs.google.com/document/d/128c2U4y_Qu0aMQifbTUvgKtPFXs8fVvUME2PLAbYNtU/edit?usp=sharing
