Is This Goodbye?: Part 5

It’s been a month since the rebellion  lost their contact in the Horde, Catra has remained obedient to Adora’s orders during that time, her fight is gone. Adora isn’t displeased by this development. Catra’s still in there and she’s safer this way. If she’s not actively trying to escape she doesn’t risk running into those rebels again. Of course she still has a detail of guards watching her at all times, the rebellion might try to kill her, it’s for protection.

The rebellion is losing but in war it can only take one  slip up in security for them to slip in and destroy everything and so the leash tightens more. The rebellion has been getting more aggressive, they have magic but they’re small and scrappy, the Horde has displaced them from their kingdoms and crippled their forces. One more well planned strike and the rebellion will be destroyed. Adora leads her soldiers into their base and captures the leaders. She’s not going to give them the dignity of a death in battle, they will die traitors to the Horde.

The leaders are lined up in her throne room, blindfolded with the footage being streamed live to all of Etheria.

‘The war ends today’. She speaks into the camera. Catra is curled up in front of  her throne on the floor of the platform.

Adora holds her sword to one of  the princesses, Frosta, she thinks, the girl doesn’t tremble but her trademarked anger doesn't make an appearance.  

Adora prepares to strike when the sword is knocked out of her hand. She-Ra shifts her gaze to Catra and she charges for her. The whole of Etheria watches the ensuing fight and for a moment there is hope until the Horde Lord pins Catra to the ground and knocks her out. The Princess alliance is swiftly imprisoned  as enemies of peace with only their lives to show for their effort, denied martyrdom and the broadcast cuts out.

Catra wakes up strapped to a table, Adora looks down at her with cold eyes. ‘Catra, I thought we were past this. Why did you interfere?’.

Catra only stares off, broken beyond imagination.

‘You’re not in your right mind right now, I can fix that, you just have to let the treatment happen. The war is over, when you’re better you can run around the fright zone and accompany me to meetings again. Doesn’t that sound nice?’. Catra continues to stare past her.  

Adora strokes her cheek softly. ‘Catra, you’ve not been in your right mind for a while, I am so sorry I neglected you until today but I’m here now. You don’t have to do anything, just let me take care of you’.

Catra nods absently. With the rebellion gone one would think that Adora would ease up on Catra and yet the feline does not leave her side, some days she is completely mute, almost empty of all thoughts. There are some good days when she will joke around like old times or can even muster a token fight but she always gives in.

If someone asked Adora she would tell them that Catra is fine, she’s just learnt what’s good for her so there's no need for her to fight every little thing. No one ever asks Catra why she’s gone quiet all of a sudden?They know the answer but no one wants to say it  out loud because they won’t like what it is.

War changes everyone, the once kind and self sacrificing Adora has become  a monster, cruel and overbearing, the once prickly and self loathing Catra has become docile and obedient.

Etheria, a wasteland of joy ruled over by a woman so cruelly ignorant  that she damaged the one she loved with her “good intentions”.
