Kirsten's bedroom renovation
Tumblr media
It's a sunny spring day in Minnesota Territory, and Kirsten is stuck indoors, helping with the spring cleaning. Her first task is to sweep the upstairs bedrooms--she shares one with her three siblings, and so it gets messy very quickly. But Kirsten doesn't complain--she remembers her previous home, a one-room log cabin on her aunt and uncle's farm. That was easier to clean, but it was hard sharing such a small place with six people. After a fire burned that cabin down, the Larsons bought a much larger house, the beautiful home they dreamed they'd have when they left Sweden two years ago.
As for my part in this, I created a bedroom for my Kirsten doll a few years ago, but I recently renovated it to make it look more like the illustrations in Kirsten's sixth book, Changes for Kirsten.
Tumblr media
The walls in this illustration look like they've been finished with plaster, which was common in houses at the time. The light color would have come from local sources of limestone.
So most of the changes I made were to the walls and windows. I used printed photographs for the windows, and added the twelve-pane window frames over the images before printing. For the walls, I took down the boring white wood paneling. I imitated that plastered look using tissue paper stuck to the first layer of pale yellow paint, and then I painted another layer over the tissue paper.
Tumblr media
The furnishings are basically the same, except for the trunk on the right side of this photo. She used to store her clothes in the top half of Felicity's clothes press, which I mentioned in my recent post about moving the clothes press into the parlor for Caroline to use. After I did that, I knew Kirsten would need a place to store her clothes, and what better piece than a smaller version of her trunk?
Most of the things in the above picture are not from Kirsten's collection. The bed was made by my grandpa when I was eight and first got my Kirsten doll. My mom made the quilt on the bed and the one on the rocking chair, the pillow and mattress on the bed, and the two darker gray cats. The foot stove next to the bed is Pleasant Company, and so are the shoes (including snow shoes) lined up next to the trunk. The rocking chair came from an antique store. I made everything else: both rugs, the cradle, the nightstand, the candle and book and stuffed cat on the nightstand, the cross stitch hanging on the wall, the shelves and everything on them, the painted round boxes at the foot of the bed, baby Britta's dress, and Kirsten's quilt square in the embroidery hoop.
Tumblr media
This is a little wooden trunk I found at a craft store. I painted it blue and then painted on the decorative designs using stencils.
That's Kirsten's straw hat hanging on the wall, from her collection. My mom made the two sunbonnets.
Tumblr media
I gave it a weathered look by lightly brushing on white and red paint.
Tumblr media
The trunk can hold all of Kirsten's clothes. It has room for a few more dresses too. I have almost all of Kirsten's clothes; I'm only missing her baking outfit, skating coat, and promise dress.
Tumblr media
I also made the gingham curtains for the windows. There's a lot of blue and white going on in here, so I wanted them to match the color themes.
Next to Britta's cradle are the round boxes I made to hold Kirsten's socks and ribbons, which are all Pleasant Company things. Her lunch box and bucket are from craft stores.
Tumblr media
I remade her honey crate and the jars of honey. They now contain clear glue dyed with food coloring. I made her little gnomes too.
Tumblr media
The rocking chair was an antique store find. It's perfect for her to sit with her baby sister Britta.
Tumblr media
I also painted a little flourish on the end of her bed.
This definitely isn't all of Kirsten's collection--I have a few pieces hidden away underneath her room that won't fit here. That includes her actual big trunk that my grandpa made, her Saint Lucia wreath and tray that I made, her dishes set from her official collection, and some other small things that she doesn't need in her room.

Prompt: Last book purchased borrowed from library (square 39)
Book read: Changes for Kirsten/Janet Shaw, illustrated by Renee Graf and Keith Skeen
Why: I don’t often buy books so I changed the prompt, then spent forever reading a book I ended up dnf’ing.
What I Wanted: A satisfying ending to the main storyline and better illustrations than the last book.
What I Got: The illustrations were better! As for the ending, it was satisfying enough; it just feels like the main storyline really ended two books before, even though this book is its official ending.

Hey, Curator. I wanted to do this by ask instead of by comment on AO3, because I have *so* much respect for your work on Autobigraphy of Kirsten Clancy. Your creation of Martian culture? Exquisite. Your depiction of a healthy relationship between two peers striving to be part of the same organization they love and also raise a family? Fantastic. Your depiction of grief and trauma? Amazing. So since my question feels a bit critical, I wanted to emphasize that I'm not trying to start an argument or score points - I genuinely, privately want to know.
I could say nice things about the story all day. But one thing in it that I felt disappointed by was the decision not to just challenge the moral attitude of Picard and the Romulan relocation effort, but to actively change the facts of it. I think the question of whether the Federation should be allowed to break up over saying a billion lives or more is a serious one, and one that deserved the argument between Picard and Clancy. Having a narrative that says "Well, nobody really died because the Romulans evacuated them using their own resources" seems to really gut the whole moral concept of the argument - as if to say Clancy can't win it on those terms so we have to change the facts, when frankly I think she *can* win it.
Do you mind me asking what your thoughts were behind making that change? Is it supposed to be the product of unreliable narration on Clancy's part, or are you describing a different universe?
Anyway, thank you again for a wonderful story.
Oh my goodness, @ruckafangirl, your praise for that story means so much to me — and the elements you mention are quite close to my heart. Thank you, thank you! ❤️
I welcome questions (I feel like it’s an author’s dream to be asked why they made writerly choices), though I must admit I was confused at first by yours. The narrative in that story is 100% in our universe with those millions of Romulan deaths happening. Clancy’s argument with Picard following the destruction of Mars and Utopia Planitia — and her view that the Federation can save either itself or the Romulans, and the Romulans should have the resources to save themselves — is meant to be in light of readers knowing that Clancy won the argument at the cost of the future of the Romulan relocation effort since the Romulans did not turn out to have (or use?) the resources to save themselves.
I went back to the story to try to figure out what could have given you the impression that the Romulans didn’t die. Because you’re exactly right that Clancy is an unreliable narrator. She doesn’t lie whole cloth, though, and she’s painfully aware that most of her life is documented via official records and logs. I therefore worked to make her omissions both visible and sensible (e.g., she only reveals the extent of her closeness with Edward Jellico in the acknowledgments because, as she explains, he didn’t want her to talk much about him in her book). I wonder, was it Clancy’s press conference following Picard’s TV appearance that suggested the Romulans didn’t die? Because the journalist’s question, “What is your response to Picard’s critique of Starfleet’s decision to cancel the Romulan rescue?” is a fair one. And Clancy’s answer, “Starfleet is proud to have successfully handed off the Romulan evacuation to the Romulan government, which ensured the safety of its people,” is truthful, yet glosses over what “its people” means. Not all people. Not most people. And what about that handoff would have been proud in any way? I attempted to show the unreliable nature of Clancy’s glib, soundbite-oriented, political theater press conference answers by immediately having Clancy reflect on her training for press conferences from both Admiral Brand and her mother. Clancy, per her explaination of that training, focuses her press conference answers on what she views as “relevant information” while knowingly avoiding mention of deeper, uncomfortable truths — including what she perceives as Picard’s erratic behavior and his need for a brain scan (begging the question: Does Clancy know about Picard’s Irumodic Syndrome diagnosis or are her instincts that good?). Clancy correctly believes that the Romulan government took over the relocation. She possibly incorrectly believes that Starfleet therefore has no responsibility for the relocation’s failures. So she doesn’t mention them.
I hope all this makes clear that I wholeheartedly agree with you, @ruckafangirl: the moral concept of Clancy’s showdown with Picard requires those Romulans to die. And they most definitely do.
Note because of the times we live in: The Romulans die due to canon consistency. Their deaths are not a statement on my personal beliefs, their deaths are a fact of the Trek universe.

me thinking it’s good that claudia is not played by a child since child actors is a very tricky area vs me thinking about how the storyline won’t be as impactful when claudia is portrayed by an actress who is 18; fight

Getting dressed with Kirsten
Tumblr media
It's a bright January morning on the Minnesota frontier, and Kirsten's bedroom is almost as cold as it is outside! She's going to get dressed as quickly as she can in her warmest winter clothes. Kirsten is restless and tired of being kept indoors, so today she'll be meeting up with her cousins Lisbeth and Anna, who have a fun surprise adventure planned for the three of them. Kirsten is so excited!
Tumblr media
First she warms her freezing feet over the foot stove--it's full of hot stones and gives off a comforting heat.
Tumblr media
She slips her warmed tootsies into a pair of soft, felted sockor that came all the way from Sweden.
Tumblr media
She starts with pantalettes that are hemmed in pretty eyelet lace. Even when it's muddy and slushy outside, Kirsten is expected to keep her pantalettes snowy white.
Tumblr media
Over those, she puts on a white flannel chemise. In the summer, she wears a lightweight cotton chemise, but in winter she needs the extra warmth.
Tumblr media
Next, she puts on a quilted flannel petticoat.
Tumblr media
On her feet she wears her thickets and warmest knit stockings, with her most durable leather boots.
Tumblr media
Now for the outer layers! She puts on a crisp white blouse and a black woolen skirt with a pretty waistband.
Tumblr media
Her sweater was made in the traditional Swedish style that mothers have been knitting for their daughters for many generations.
Tumblr media
Before putting her mittens on, she ties up her braids with ribbons that match the waistband of her skirt.
Tumblr media
The mittens she puts on match the lovely patterns and colors on her sweater.
Tumblr media
The pompom hat also matches!
Tumblr media
Kirsten always wears her amber heart necklace given to her by her grandmother.
Tumblr media
She finishes her outfit with a bright red woven scarf.
Tumblr media
All bundled up now, Kirsten is ready for the surprise adventure that Anna and Lisbeth have promised.....
Tumblr media
The perfect sledding hill!
Kirsten's sweater, hat, mittens, white blouse, pantalettes, boots, stockings, and hair ribbons were made by Pleasant Company. Her petticoat, chemise, and skirt were made by my mother when I was Kirsten's age. Her necklace, scarf, and felted sockor (made from alpaca fiber) were made by me.

it’s been a while since i’ve done a criminal minds evolution post and i’m going piece together my current thoughts, in the interest of full disclosure:
i haven’t watched past the mid-season break episode because i saw enough spoilers to grasp what was happening and to be honest, i’m devastated.
as my url indicates, penelope garcia is my ultimate favourite tv character and has been for over a decade - aka i’m biased
that being said, i’d like to think i’ve got a pretty solid grasp of what can be determined as ‘in character’ and of the various flaws she’s shown across the 15 seasons of the original show
with all these things considered, let’s gooo:
i am so deeply disappointed with the direction they have taken penelope’s arc over the second half of this season; even when considering my own previous opinions on why she may act in certain ways (see this post) i can’t for the life of me understand why the writers would deem this as an appropriate story line for her
we have seen penelope’s jaded love map in action before (see: shane wyeth and kevin lynch) but never before have we seen that impact anyone but herself, certainly not the victims of the cases she cares so deeply about, her team or her friends who she’ll usually move heaven and earth to protect
we have seen her acting with a steadfast mindset when faced with impossible choices (see: greg baylor and jesse wilson) she knows what’s best for herself in the long term even if it means damaging herself and going against what the people she loves want from her but she has never shown such a shallow lack of self control and self sabotage
we have seen how penelope shows and responds to attraction, she doesn’t always know what’s best for herself but she has never before let her lines be crossed in such a way and fallen into the ‘but i love him’ archetype, even when faced with an actual abusive situation she got herself out in the only way she could (see: the black queen episode)
she has been embarrassed at her own choices and frankly broken from how they have led her to isolation but she has never and would never use that embarrassment as a justification for not reaching out to her support system
she has never shown disregard for other people’s emotions and struggles, she cares and shows compassion even when she really really shouldn’t (see: you’ve got such a big heart and the dozens of references to her being the heart/glue of the team). to see her repeatedly ignoring how she is impacting specifically rossi and alvez but also the entire team is just ludicrous.
reducing such a wonderfully complex and yes, flawed, character like penelope garcia down to another victim of ‘i just couldn’t control myself because of this half-baked connection to a man who’s done nothing but negatively impact me’ is something that i can’t ever accept
i personally think this season presented a perfect opportunity to show her as more fallible than she has been allowed to be in the past: everyone has their limits and whilst hers are clearly higher than most, she is human and she is exhausted.
the concept of her finally, finally saying enough is enough after being dragged back into a job that was only ever a source of trauma for her was so powerful to me a few episodes back.
instead, from what i’ve seen, she has become a self centred villain of her own making and it’s not even been written that way to serve a higher purpose.
15 seasons of development, completely scrapped in the space of 4/5 episodes.
finally, i’m shocked that the writers and actors who care deeply about this show don’t see what’s so inherently wrong about this situation
