Car Cleaning & Maintenance 101

Most people drive a car or drive in a car. While you are getting to be a passenger, I wish I would of asked more questions about rules, mechanics, streets, etc. Things you know more in looking back but not so much in the moment. But then eventually comes the day you have your own car, usually some (relatively) inexpensive starter car, or a family members car heavily used. 

This will kind of read like an overview post, not unlike my makeup post, because while I would like to say I am a mostly functioning and successful adult, I am not a car expert. I find I know more about cars than most people, but I come from a car loving family/mechanic family. But even then, the important thing is to keep your car safe for not only you, but anyone you have in your car with you. 

Maintenance: 

There will be maintenance on your car, whether you are playing the short term game or long term game. It is helpful to put some money aside each month in a “rainy day fund”, because you could be totally careful but “when it rains it pours”. There is always some force you can’t control, like a cheap city that doesn’t fix its streets and need new tires. I would have at least two mechanics you maintain a relationship with: Dealership (good for later on if you trade your car in and they already know you/vehicle) and a local/family member. The smaller shop person may not be able to do the bigger stuff, and be careful with family-just because you are related doesn’t mean they know what they are doing OR will do a good job for you. Treat your car well, take care of it when you see a light, and save up money. If there is anything you can DIY, like having your own tire pressure machine in your trunk, do so. Keep up your insurance, and AAA roadside is never a bad thing to have for emergencies. 

Cleaning: 

Why is clean important? On the outside of your car, visibility. You just mean windows right? Nah, your headlights too, when was the last time you cleaned those? You probably have not. Your headlights and windows make it so you can see the road. Inside, is a health thing. You can totally eat in your car, if you are in it long enough it happens. But food can get caught there, attract bugs, and then germs. Besides the fact that wiping down the inside of the car, not having dust if your allergic to that, is so damn nice. You can use basic cleaners or get car cleaning stuff and just leave it in the trunk of your car. To clean some parts of the car, you will need specialized items, like to clean leather. Try cleaning once a month, in the afternoon when the sun is starting to go down. Make it a party, do a couple at once! 

One of my favorite things to do in life is to slide into my driver seat, turn on my car, listen to my music too loud, and vrooooom along side my engine. It just takes me out of my head and into the moment. I would also say, if you love your car, it will love you back. Name it, if it feels right. My first car was a PT Cruiser, my mom would not let me have a mini cooper-Amore (french for love). She put in her time, and I got the “new car experience” with a Chevy sonic and it was not a love match. I finally got into my teenage dream car, Mini Cooper Clubman named Ami (Mon Ami-my friend). She just celebrated her 5 year birthday with some hefty repair bills, but the only way I say “Adios” is if I get a plug in, but is it worth it to not be able to vroom?

Chevy and I have poured so many years and blood n sweat n tears into SYS! and chevy manages to have so many other #projects at the same time that they’re balancing and planning #we have another two comics we wanna plan too and we’re in mid production for the second one #but. I feel like such a failure when it comes to SYS #we wanted it to release December last year and look where we are now #I got sick and fucked up my wrist bad and chevy got a job so it’s not like we just haven’t done anything #chevy is writing a whole nother comic at the same time and I’m trying to learn learn learn #but maybe. im not built for it #or. maybe I just need to let myself be disatisfied. everyone tells me to do it scared. and that’s true #but I also neee to learn more o do it badly #I’ve read webcomics with art that was genuinely hard to look at because I loved it #im not helping anyone by wondering and going what if what if what if. issa leap of faith or whateva that white man said

2014 chevy sonic engine bay

If the oil leak is coming from your Chevy Sonic’s oil filter or plug, clearly replacing them is going to be the fix. In order to fix an oil leak coming from the pan area, it’s going to take a lot of time, skill, and patience. But, it’s not unheard of for an oil pan to crack or get a hole in it. Most likely, the gasket that sits between the oil pan and the engine block will go bad.

Oil Pan– The oil pan is a very common place for oil to leak from.

If the oil leaks from the valve covers oil on spark plugs, it can cause problems with the ignition system. For instance, if the oil is leaking from the valve covers above the exhaust, it’ll burn and smell as you drive. Depending on where exactly the valve cover the oil is leaking from will have an impact on other parts of the vehicle.

Valve Cover Gasket– The valve cover gasket(s) are a very common place for oil to leak from.

Oil Drain Plug– If the oil plug has been stripped out or was left loose, oil could be getting through it and onto the driveway.

Oil Filter– If the oil filter has been damaged or wasn’t sealed properly at the last oil change, it very well could be leaking some oil.

This is a list of likely places that the oil could be leaking from your car, and is presented in order from easiest to most difficult to repair. Depending on where it is leaking from, the repair can be very challenging or relatively easy. All it usually does is smoke and stink.įixing an oil leak means determining where it is coming from and repairing the issues. It’s not nearly as flammable as transmission fluid.

Smoke Under the Hood– If oil is leaking from the right spot, it can leak onto the exhaust manifold(s) and it gets smokey.

We’ll go into that in the next section (it’s often the valve covers). Before it lands on the driveway it will leak somewhere from your Sonic’s engine.

Oil on Engine– The oil has to be getting out from somewhere.

If the fluid on the garage is red in color (which is almost always the color of transmission fluid) it may be a transmission fluid leak that you are looking at. If the power steering fluid looks low or foamy, it may be a power steering leak that you are actually looking at. Transmission fluid and power steering fluid could also have leaked.

Oil Under the Car– The most obvious symptom of an oil leak is the little puddle of oil or the dots that you’ll find under your Sonic.

Here are the most common oil leak symptoms: That means that it is finding its way into the combustion chamber and out of the tailpipe. If there is no oil visibly leaking from your Sonic’s engine, but the oil level is dropping, your engine is “using” oil. There is a difference between an engine using oil and and leaking oil. It can get into your ignition system and onto the spark plugs. The leak could get worse and you could run out of oil before realizing it. Allowing oil to leak for too long can cause problems. Fixing the oil leak should be considered a priority.

Determining where and how your Chevy Sonic’s engine is losing oil in itself is half the battle. One of the most common vehicle issues is when it is leaking oil.

A/N: So, I’ve decided to do all 30 of these writing prompts. I may miss a day here and there, but I’m going to try to do one a day, and I will be completing all 30 no matter what.  They won’t always be in order.  This fic will be for the prompt: Write about finding a new hobby.

I have a new hobby. It's an expensive one and it's become pretty time consuming. My newest hobby is finding new and different ways to wreck my car.

My first breakdown was legitimate. Something died in my transmission, apparently. So, on a friend's recommendation, I brought it down to Singer Auto. She swore up and down that I was going to absolutely love the service I'd get there.

She said it with a hint of a hidden, knowing smile, and I was curious what it was all about. So I brought in my little Chevy hatchback, and the minute I met my mechanic, I got it.

His name is Dean and sweet holy Jesus is that man gorgeous. It defies logic for someone to be that incredibly beautiful, especially covered in grease and dressed in a ratty grey t-shirt, and dark blue coveralls with the arms tied around his waist.

The description doesn't exactly scream GQ, but trust me when I say this man should be on the cover of everything!

GQ? Yes.

Vogue? Yes.

Better Homes and Gardens? Sure.

Car and Driver? Yep - logical.

Playgirl?

...?

...?

...?

Excuse me, I'm gonna need a moment.

I mean, I know they don't even publish Playgirl anymore, but I swear they'd put it back into circulation if Dean said he'd pose!

But I digress.

My point is that after that first meeting with him - after shaking his big, warm, callused hand - after hearing him speak in his deep, delicious, honey-warm voice - I knew I absolutely had to see him again.

So, two days later I opened my hood, ripped out some wires and brought it back in. A week later I was back with two flat tires.

The other day I brought it in for an oil change. When Dean pointed out that they'd done an oil change as a matter of routine, the first time I brought it in, I insisted they do another anyway.

"Can never be too careful!" I'd squeaked at him. To which he'd nodded and smiled slightly, eyeing me like I might have a screw loose.

So, it's really stupid that I'm sitting in front of the garage again. I'm going to tell Dean that I hear a knocking sound. If he can't find the cause right away, he may need to keep it overnight which would give me reason to return tomorrow.

I climb out of my car but instead of going into the front reception area, I sneak in through the open garage door hoping I'll have the chance to see Dean actually working on a car. Maybe his t-shirt will be clinging to him, muscles straining as he lifts something heavy.

Maybe he'll be sweating.

But as I walk around the shelving unit full of spare parts, I hear the older mechanic speaking to Dean in a gruff voice.

"For God's sake, boy, ask her out. She obviously likes you, at least enough to keep trashing her car."

Dean runs a grubby hand down his face, depositing streaks of grease across his wrinkled brow.

"I don't know, Bobby. I mean, she's pretty classy; she told me what she does for a living? And I swear I had to go home and google it, and I still couldn't explain it to you!"

"Well, all I'm telling you is, I don't want to see that pretty little Sonic go through anymore trauma. I think - "

Bobby cuts himself off as he spots me by the shelves.

He clears his throat, gestures towards me, and then shoves Dean in my direction.

My face is beet red as Dean approaches. He's rubbing one hand across the back of his neck, a shy smile appearing on his beautiful face.

Good. God. It would be more merciful if he'd just kill me quick.

As he reaches me, I decide to pretend I haven't heard anything, so I wave my hand toward my car. "There's a...a knoc-"

"Can I take you to dinner?" Dean interrupts me, deciding to go the direct route. He's smiling, but I can see the uncertainty in his emerald eyes and it's ridiculously adorable.

I feel like leaping into the air and screaming like a game show contestant who just won a million bucks. But I settle for beaming up at him and clapping my hands a couple times.

"Yes, I would love that."

Dean's uncertainty melts away and his smile becomes wide and teasing.

"K, awesome. But let's take my car. Yours seems to have a lot of problems."

Its been so long since we hung out. Every trip to little caesars, walmart, etc felt like another adventure when it was with you. It's abit awhile since I could just be home all day so I ended up thinking about you. How I used to walk over to the other room to show you a stupid meme I saw to make us both laugh or offer you food cause I knew you never made food. I miss the moments we would have just by taking by skipping the expressways in the Chevy sonic so the rides last longer. I miss the way we would keep our running jokes going even after over a decade. I miss the random cussing across the house cause you died in overwatch or dark souls. I miss my best friend. There's no one quite like him.
