Thinking about 6th grade co-ed Sex Education in the Midwest.

Our teacher was just our regular teacher and he gave us a big speech about how boys will have wet dreams and get erections which is fine and natural and no one should think it's funny or make fun of them. Then he said that girls will become "hard to deal with" and start arguing with our mothers because we're in constant competition with them... (yikes).

I didn't learn about menstruation until middle school. Boy was I mad. And sex? What's that? Abstinence only education! Anyway, my graduating class had 70 people in it and like 9 of them were pregnant (not including all of the people who got pregnant that dropped out before graduation), so we see how well that worked out.

“Spanish lawmakers adopted [in December 2022] a new bill creating a menstrual leave for women suffering from painful periods and strengthening access to abortion in public hospitals.

This text was adopted by deputies in the lower house of the Spanish parliament on its first reading, with 190 votes in favour, 154 against, and 5 abstentions. It will now go to the Senate...

The length of sick leave that doctors will be able to grant to women suffering from painful periods has not been specified in the bill.

When this bill is finally adopted, Spain will become the first country in Europe and one of the few in the world to integrate this measure into its legislation, following the example of Japan, Indonesia and Zambia.

However, there are reservations in certain quarters, particularly within the UGT trade union, one of the country's two major unions, over concerns about the possibility that employers who want to avoid these absences will put a brake on the hiring of women.

Access to abortion in public hospitals

"Menstrual leave" is one of the key measures in the broader legislation, which also provides for increased access to abortion in public hospitals. Less than 15 per cent of abortions performed in the country take place in these institutions, mainly because of conscientious objections by doctors.

It is also to allow minors to have abortions without parental permission at 16 and 17 years of age, reversing a requirement introduced by a previous conservative government in 2015. 

Abortion was decriminalized in Spain in 1985 and then legalized in 2010, but abortion remains a right fraught with difficulties in this country with a strong Catholic tradition.  

This bill also provides for the reinforcement of sex education in schools as well as the free distribution of contraceptives and menstrual hygiene products in high schools.

Spain is a country considered a reference for women's rights in Europe, especially since the adoption of a law on gender violence in 2004. The Sanchez government has more women than men in its ranks.” -via Euronews, 12/15/22

With Hopper gone and Mr. Wheeler incapable of giving a goddamn, Karen and Claudia ambush Steve the week before their boys start high school and implore him to give their boys The Talk- sort of a Birds and Bees 102, if you will.

Obviously the boys know where babies come from, more or less. What they really need is the please-don’t-make-us-grandparents-yet lesson. Only Lucas has a dad present and caring enough to give his son periodic check-ins and chats about >ahem< milestones in a young man’s life. And El may be in California but Mike is begging to spend spring break out there and Hopper’s instruction began and ended with keeping the door open.

Steve is bright red and inching towards the door as they make their arguments for why he’s the best, nay the only option, to take up this responsibility but well- he remembers his own mistakes. His own early misadventures buying condoms, using condoms and so forth. It would have been a huge burden off his teenage shoulders to not be figuring the whole damn thing out through trial and error, absolutely incapable of considering consequences until it was all over and consequences were the only thing he could think about. The below text is from a pamphlet handed out by my grandma’s church to get their members to attend school board meetings to block Sex education. 

Needless to say this is bad and will cause so much harm.

Fails to provide data about the well-documented negative consequences of early sexual debut. Fails to encourage sexually active children to return to abstinence. 9. FAILS TO ESTABLISH ABSTINENCE AS THE EXPECTED STANDARD Fails to establish abstinence (or a return to abstinence) as the expected standard for all school-age children. May mention abstinence only in passing. May teach children that all sexual activity-other than "unprotected" vaginal and oral sex- is acceptable, and even healthy. May present abstinence and "protected" sex as equally good options for children. 10. PROMOTES TRANSGENDER IDEOLOGY Promotes affirmation of and/or exploration of diverse gender identities. This is a pet peeve, but I really don't get why Toph, resident 11-12 year old, is the one making sex jokes or being the one most casual and for some reason knowledgeable(as in she's comfortable with the concept of it) more than Zuko & Sokka who are likely the ones with more knowledge on it. Like I know 11-12 year olds know stuff but she is, very much, 11-12. Why is she speaking like a freshman in college trying way too hard to be cool???

She's definitely very blunt and direct and immature but she's also twelve. It's fine if she knows things but I get peeved when she's portrayed like an all-knowing, all-understanding person.
