My Agatha Christie re-reading project, #10: The Murder at the Vicarage

Finally, a classic again! But before we get into my mostly positive views on this book, let's take a moment to contemplate the horrible cover:

For those of you who haven't read the book: the murder victim is a man of about 50-60 years, who is killed inside the vicar's study. In other words, either the people involved with making and choosing the cover hadn't read the book, or they HAD read the book and just thought a beautiful woman lying in the grass would sell more copies.

So -1000 points for the cover. Fortunately, the book itself is much better.

For starters, Miss Marple has arrived! I love Miss Marple. She's much dearer to me than Poirot is. (Sorry, Poirot, I love you too!) What I particularly like about her introduction here is that she sneaks up on you as a detective. In her first scene she's one of several catty old women sharing in the village gossip, and the vicar's wife Griselda doesn't even like her:

"My  duty,"  said  Griselda.  "My  duty  as  the  Vicaress.  Tea  and scandal at four-thirty."

"Who is coming?"

Griselda  ticked  off  on  her  fingers  with  a  glow  of  virtue  on  her face.

"Mrs.   Price   Ridley,   Miss   Wetherby,   Miss   Hartnell,   and   that terrible Miss Marple."

"I  rather  like  Miss  Marple,"  I  said.  "She  has,  at  least,  a  sense  of humour."

"She's  the  worst  cat  in  the  village,"  said  Griselda.  "And  she always  knows every  single  thing  that  happens —and  draws  the worst inferences from it."

Griselda, as I have said, is much younger than I am. At my time of life, one knows that the worst is usually true.

It's only gradually that the reader (or at least the unsuspecting reader) comes to see that Miss Marple is not only more clever than her peer, but the one who will untangle this entire murder mystery. It makes me long to see a reaction to this book from someone who has never heard of Miss Marple before.

The vicar and his family are enjoyable to get to know, and the police do reasonably well for themselves, though Miss Marple of course runs circles around them. I love her description of  Inspector Slack as "exactly  like  the  young  lady  in  the boot  shop;  who  wants  to  sell  you  patent  leather  because  she's got it in your size, and doesn't take any notice of the fact that you want brown calf."

And her attitude to Chief Constable Melchett also had me chuckling:

"It's  all  very  well,  but  they  are  the  only  two  people  who  had  a motive for making away with Protheroe."

"Oh, I wouldn't say that, Colonel Melchett," said Miss Marple.

"Why, can you think of any one else?"

"Oh!  yes,  indeed.  Why,"  she  counted  on  her  fingers,  "one,  two, three, four, five, six —yes, and a possible seven. I can think of at least  seven  people  who  might  be  very  glad  to  have  Colonel Protheroe out of the way."

The colonel looked at her feebly.

"Seven people? In St. Mary Mead?"

Miss Marple nodded brightly.

"Mind  you  I  name  no  names,"  she  said.  "That  wouldn't  be  right. But  I'm  afraid  there's  a  lot  of  wickedness  in  the  world.  A  nice honourable  upright  soldier  like  you  doesn't  know  about  these things, Colonel Melchett."

I thought the Chief Constable was going to have apoplexy.

As you can tell from all these quotes, this is a fun read! The murder is also well put together. I'm always a fan of Christie's double twists, and she puts it to good use here.

On the negative side, I think that the actual murder victim and suspects are rather more thinly sketched. It's not that detrimental to my enjoyment of the book, but I do think she could have put some more effort in there.

As always, there's a fair dose of classism, though I enjoyed the way the vicar's wife took great care never to train their housekeeper Mary, because as long as she was rude and a terrible cook she wouldn't get higher-paid work elsewhere. It leads to some pretty great descriptions of meals I wouldn't want to eat, so it's hard to put it entirely in the negative column. :-)

And the same can be said of this bit about Miss Hartnell:

On my way home, I ran into Miss Hartnell and she detained me at least ten minutes, declaiming in her deep bass voice against the improvidence and ungratefulness of the lower classes. The crux of  the  matter  seemed  to  be  that  The  Poor  did  not  want  Miss Hartnell  in  their  houses.  My  sympathies  were  entirely  on  their side.  I  am  debarred  by  my  social  standing  from  expressing  my prejudices in the forceful manner they do.

The character I had the hardest time with was Dr. Haydock, who was supposed to be sympathetic, but who had clearly never heard of confidentiality in his life. Maybe doctors didn't have that back then? But if I was a patient, I certainly wouldn't want my doctor to go telling random vicars "so-and-so has an illness that has affected their brain" and "so-and-so is dying!" Shame on you, Dr. Haydock!

All in all though, this book is a delight, and I'm glad to finally be able to give a Christie book a high score again.

Verdict: 4/5 (and tempted to make it 5)

ETA: Reading up now, it seems there were already Miss Marple short stories published before this book, so some of the readers would have heard of her already, though not all of them.

My dinner for tonight: Poor Man’s Meal

It’s a recipe that is very loose and has a lot of room for experimentation and substitution. You can have big chunks, tiny pieces, whatever. It’s meant to be made out of stuff you already have in the kitchen. Don’t over complicate it. This time I used:

2 lbs of potatoes (I used russet)

2 cut onions (I used yellow)

5-ish cloves of garlic (you can go more or less depending on your preference)

4 large hot dogs (any sausage or meat will work, whatever you have lying around)

2 cups of beef bullion/broth

1/4 cup or so of tomato sauce

Peel and cube the potatoes, coat them in 1/3 cup oil and whatever seasoning you like. I used Lipton onion soup mix. Place in a glass casserole dish or baking tray and cook at 450F for 30-35 minutes.

Cut up the onions. Put 2 tbsp of oil is a large skillet and set to medium high heat. Throw in the onions and let them cook until they start browning. Then add the garlic and reduce heat to medium-low. Garlic cooks quickly so don’t forget to turn down the heat.

Add the tomato sauce and mix. Tomato paste works too, just add a bit of water to compensate. I used a tomato sauce I’d made myself about 2 weeks ago, but any store variety will work.

I cooked my hot dogs in a separate skillet first because I like my hot dogs very well done. If it doesn’t matter to you, just cut them up and throw them in with the onions. They’re basically cooked already so you don’t need to worry about that. If you’re using a different meat, or uncooked sausage, cook it as appropriate then add it with the onions. 

By now the potatoes should be done. Take them out of the oven and scrape them into the skillet.

Add the beef broth and stir everything together. It should mix with the tomato sauce to make a tasty sauce that flavors everything. 

And you’re done! Serve with whatever vegetable you like. No, potato is not a vegetable, make a green thing. I used zucchini spears. Just season them as you like, drizzle some oil on top, then broil them in the oven.

Made some Everything Bagel Bread. Tastes amazing with cream cheese. Think I’ll make an open-faced breakfast sandwich next.

I’ve made a lot of loaves using this no-knead recipe, and It’s come out aces every time. You do need a Dutch Oven, but they’re very affordable and good for a variety of recipes, especially stews.

If you wanna use the bagel seasoning, ignore what the recipe says and add at least 2-3 tbsp of the stuff. What’s the point of subtle seasoning in bread? And don’t forget to apply some crushed salt flakes on the crust before baking. If you have a water spritzer, use it to moisten the outside before putting it in the oven. It really improves the crust.
