Substance or natural agent that is used to help prevent the loss of moisture. Humectants essentially help the skin retain and preserve moisture. Common ones you may have encountered are glycerin, lecithin, butylene glycol and hyaluronic acid.

Did you know? Are you familiar with this term? The INCI stands for International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients. There is a global regulatory body that provides and overseas the naming of ingredients we use in our personal care products. This is important for a variety of reasons, but mostly to keep standards in check and have a system that can be used and recognized all over the globe. Also it creates a relatively easy to understand name for ingredients rather than their TRUE chemical name. For instance, (5R)-[(1S)-1,2-Dihydroxyethyl]-3,4-dihyroxyfuran-2(5H)-one sounds super scary right? That’s the ACTUAL chemical name of L-Ascorbic Acid, or Vitamin C. You wouldn’t want to read that on a label though would you?! So we give it the INCI name. It’s important to make sure manufacturers are following the law, and using this. I have seen SO MANY companies try to get away with non compliant IL’s (or ingredient listings) and, for instance, will literally put the “vitamin C” on their IL. That is not legal! You must call out the correct INCI name, as Vitamin C has many firms used topically. L-Ascorbic Acid, 3-O Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, and so on. If you see the term “Vitamin C” on the back label, don’t give it the time of day. Shady shady companies out there! Today's post is in response to legal threats levelled at some of the science-smart accounts I follow on Instagram. When one person called out a natural brand marketing an uncoated-zinc oxide powder as a "sun reflector" to mix into skincare, the company threatened to sue. Another person called a different brand out for suspect claims, such as "broccoli sprout extract" as a defense against sun exposure, and was notified that a lawsuit has been filed. . But what about freedom of speech? And truth? Turns out that both are damned tricky because lawyers. In prep for this post, a group of us (#cantsuescience) checked in with someone with enough legal background to offer basic advice (see slideshow). It's not the same as consulting a lawyer if someone's threatening to sue, but it should help. . Most high-profile companies, especially legacy types with a heritage and massive profile, do tend to follow the rules and regulations because it's in their best interests to do no cosmetic harm. But some make unwitting mistakes and slip through the regulation cracks, perhaps due to lack of experience or inadequate research etc. Either way, we have to feel safe enough to share honest reviews and opinions. The best advice I can offer as someone who is NOT a lawyer, is BE CAREFUL. . Our work is also only as good as our sources of information. A brand that says everyone else is wrong and then tries to sell us something isn't a great source of unbiased info and/or facts. . This is a really widespread myth! But the truth is that when they’re ground up so they aren’t opaque and white, inorganic sunscreens zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (commonly called physical sunscreens) actually only reflect and scatter around 5% of the UV light they protect you from. The rest is absorbed and converted to heat, just like what happens with organic (“chemical”) sunscreens! .
