My boy Isaac for #28 pls! <3
28. Bells in Santa Fe - Halsey
Isaac has continued to survive in the wasteland, without losing his mind and himself, by being someone, to someone else, for one night exactly. There are plenty of people it could be. Manny Vargas, Ignacio Rivas. Good folks. Good people. But they're stationary, and Isaac is not. They have homes to go back to, and Isaac has runner's legs. It's not like it's completely selfless--after all, he gets what he needs from it. After traveling with the doctor for a couple dozen miles, he needs it bad. Here's how he knows they're good folks--when he gets up in the morning, and dresses in the dim light of their room, and finds his way to the door, they don't even ask him to stay. They tell him he could, if he wanted, which is one of those unkind kindnesses everyone shows. They don't mean it, but they don't know that. He does. He has to.
Given that this is the song that got pulled, I have to assume that this is intentional, and that you are playing the game. You dastardly dastard
Send me a character and a number 1-100, and I'll write a drabble about them based on that song on my Wrapped!

Raven, Nightmares, Cryptid, and Demons for Isaac
RAVEN - What sad song, poem or sonnet would they be associated with?
Definitely not any of these but they are things I heavily associate him with/that fit him very well so bear with me: (answering under the cut so I don't clog the dash)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for sad songs I associate with him- there are so so many. Some of the most fitting ones specifically would be Whatever Lets You Cope by Black Foxxes and Memento Mori by crywank.
NIGHTMARES - If they had a chariot leading them through their universe’s version of Hell, what animal or creature would be pulling them?
I can imagine it being one black German shepherd- more specifically, his three legged black German shepherd, Isabella, except much larger and maybe a little rabid looking. And some abnormally large and vicious varient of a night stalker. These very specific images came to me.
CRYPTID - Which cryptid or urban legend best represents your muse?
Again, not exactly a cryptid or urban legend, but it fits- he would 100% be Long Horse that was created by Trevor Henderson. This fella:
Tumblr media
Quoting directly from the wiki-
"Despite being pure, crystalized horror, immeasurably long and bathed in black stains, Long Horse is quite friendly and seems to have a curious nature, but it is unknown how it displays this curiosity. It is considered as a protector of humans and warns them about future disasters."
Definitely very Isaac-like to me- it's very fitting that he would look frightening, but he'd really just be a strange, friendly little creature trying to warn and protect humans from disaster.
DEMONS - If they were in hell and walked into the night club, what song would be playing?
I think the most perfect, obvious answer would be Call Me By Your Name by Lil Nas. Absolutely perfect for him, and the whole theme of the music video just fits lol. If not that, then you should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish. Both pretty fitting methinks.

The rocky beginnings of the relationship between Arcade Gannon and a courier who would, for better or worse, permanently change the Mojave—and Arcade along with it.
I'm finally done with my first full-length fic! I kept reworking some parts over and over again and hopefully managed to stick the landing.

Tuesday Typings
I came back from the North American Science Fiction Convention with so many books. Notes on costume stuff, one giant costume todo list, and recent reads/watches as well.
Books acquired recently
The Archive Undying, Emma Mieko Candon, 2023, bought
This is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, 2020, bought — finished and enjoyed
The Sng of Achilles, Madeline Miller, 2012, bought
Translation State,, Ann Leckie, 2023, bought
Francis: The People's Pope, Ted Rall, allegedly autographed, 2018, bought
The Stars Like Dust, Isaac Asimov, 1996 paperback printing, gifted
The Courier, Gerald Brandt, 2016, free pile
Alliance Rising, C. J. Cherryh and Jane S. Fancher, 2019, free pile
Foundryside, Robert Jackson Bennett, 2019 Broadway promo printing, free pile
Mica, fille de Transyl, Michèle Laframboise, 2012, free pile — I do not read the French; this is going on a gift pile for a Francophone friend
To Climb a Flat Mountain, G. David Nordley, 2009?, bought after the author gave me an answer to a worldbuilding problem
Burning Days, Glenn Grant, 2011, free
This Virtual Night, C.S. Friedman, 2021, free
To Each This World, Julie Czerneda, 2022, free and signed
The Complete Smoke Trilogy, Tanya Huff, 2019, free
She Who Became The Sun, Shelley Parker-Chan, 2021, free
All of the free books are from Pemmi-Con; half are from DAW Publishers who were really, really generous.
Recent Reading and Watching
This is How You Lose the Time War surprised me with the identity of the Seeker; mid-book I thought there might be another operative tailing them, or a Purple child, or a third side to this war. That last prediction was quite close!
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - Bande Dessinee Episode: 0 wasn't particularly thrilling, but I value it because it fills out the characters of Full Frontal and Angelo Sauper, and how the Zeonist public sees things before the initiation of the Third Neo Zeon War, aka The Laplace Incident.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been good through season 7; I ned to track down season 8 to see if they later appearance of Ashoka in Star Wars Rebels makes any sense.
Legend of Galactic Heroes: I have finally finished this. RIP to a legend, but we all knew that the death flag for the last person to die was waved at the end of the third season. Rubinsky's end was also fitting: reflecting of how he was no longer part of the plot, he was also no longer part of politics. His last gasp felt irrelevant, and really was.
Pacific Rim: The Black is a 3dcg film that's reminiscent of RWBY and Dragon Prince in style, but with the same Ramin Djiwadi soundtrack, and some neat twists that really delve into the fridge horror of the setting. But this is a kids' show, so there's little blood, the decapitations happen out of frame, and the heads don't roll too far. Episode 7 has a nice "it's dangerous to go alone; take this" moment.
Computing
A 2.1A powerbank is not enough to stably power a Pi 1 B+ with a 4.0" square Hyperpixel Touch display and a wireless keyboard. Big Sad. Next question is if a PiSugar 3 battery controller will work with a Pi 1 B+ or if I should splurge $75 on a Pi 4 for this device.
I'd like to have a mobile compute terminal that's smaller than a 13" laptop, but still has USB ports. Scrollwheel and a button to toggle the OSK would also be nice.
Primary nonwork laptop's keyboard continues to degrade; It's becoming a desk item. Its degradation is the primary driver of the new palmtop development.
Actually, wait, I have a spare CM4 from a StereoPi 2 device. I could use that, with a compatible breakout board maybe. Or I could test the Hyperpixel screen on the Stereopi board directly. Then I'd have a 4" touchscreen mated to a … 5" wide board? Well, it'll at least let me test some things, like whether the CM4 works for this use case. Bonus dual cameras is a questionable bonus.
Crafting
KInda burnt out on crafting, tbh. Last two weeks were full of crunch before Pemmi-Con/NASFiC, which netted me a "Judge's Choice in Novice Class" award and "Best Use of Modern Tech" in the Masquerade competition.
Next up, over @glowingskull, I plan to post rundowns of the stuff I made, and maybe some shapefiles, but there's a lot of work left in this costume and I plan to redo large parts of the headgear.
Because, let's be honest, the post-con todo list for that costume is basically:
Better photographs?
Write up the project
Print off a holder for these parts, because I'm retiring them to mount on the wall
Redesign snout, again, to remove grilles and double-thicken all the parts
Resculpt temples and ears of skull
Put a visor in the eye holes
Eye-lights in visor?
Enclose head: back of skull, ventilation, neck sock
Redo the flame staff's camera monopod mount attachment point for durability (may require welding?)
Sculpt a model for the chestpiece, so it's plastic instead of foam
Sculpt a model for arm bracers
And then on top of that I also want to:
Document the Servicer outfit
Sew on a Masonic patch for the Servicer outfit
Build some DIY NVGs for use in costume projects like this one
Write up the Baba Yaga's Hut costume which won Best In Show
I think my next costume goal, after the revised Turaga Vakama, will be an Earth Federation Space Forces officer uniform, so I can give the planned "WTF is Zeon" lectures in character.
The next head goal will be a Deinonychus head with articulated jaw, which requires advancements in augmented reality. Need to get the StereoPi working, or ditch/sell it and switch to paired NVG monocles.
Music
I think it's time for Pacific Rim soundtracks. Pacific Rim: The Black sounds somewhere between the Pacific Rim movies' soundtracks and the tense violin work from the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ and Jude Law, soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Not particularly Australian, unfortunately.
Lego Stuff
Gotta merge the two submarine kits, and build the Emperor's Throne Room that I won at pinball at Pemmi-Con.

+ timeline under the cut
I'm gonna go ahead and section these off by 'era'; Mercy's old as shit and she has a handful of major life changes, so that's how I've been organizing everything. Content warnings for mentions of: medical experimentation, stillbirth & child death, cannibalism, canon-typical violence
Prewar & Enclave Era: 2060-2081
She excelled in school, got through her pre-med program early, and was accepted into U.C. Davis School of Medicine at 19. She was drafted into the U.S. Army towards the end of her second year and became a combat medic after completing basic.
She met Reed in 2068 when he was added to Mercy's squad. They were fast friends and it didn't take long for them to enter a relationship, though they were secretive about it due to rules against fraternization. They served together until 2073 when Mercy left active duty to take a position offered in West-Tek's NBC Division to assist in research on the Pan-Immunity Virion Project.
She excelled here due to her ambitious nature and willingness to sidline ethics in exchange for progress. She did occasionally question the motive behind their research as the project shifted gears over to researching FEV, but she continued with it anyways.
She had some involvement in a handful of projects and frequently moved between the East & West coasts from 2074 to early 2077.
Mercy was invited into the Enclave to continue research shortly before the Great War. She accepted the invitation and was moved to the presidential oil rig shortly before the bombs dropped.
Mercy had originally planned to move near Boston with Reed following his discharge from the Army in August 2077. Due to some advance notice/suspicion of the impending bombs and the confidential nature of her work, she repeatedly had "work delays" that prevented her from leaving California for the last few weeks leading up to the Great War.
Wyoming Era: 2083-2153
After a few years of service under the Enclave, Mercy started to have moral conflicts regarding the nature of her work. She successfully fled Control Station ENCLAVE in 2083 and fled East once she got back on the mainland. She eventually ended up in what was southern Wyoming; she came across a rural farming community and opted to stay there temporarily after finding no sign of military or Enclave presence in the surrounding areas.
After she began to settle in and let her guard down a bit, she opted to establish herself as a doctor in the community despite her lack of degree. She also began to treat animals along with humans here due to her experience working on animals in research trials.
She met a young rancher named Frances after settling into the community and they became fast friends, then lovers when their relationship dynamic shifted after a few months. Mercy moved to Frances' homestead shortly after that.
Mercy unexpectedly fell pregnant and later gave birth to twins, Isaac and Celeste, in January 2085. She and Frances eloped in October that year, and the following year Mercy established a small clinic to work out of while Frances continued to build up their homestead.
In Spring 2091, the community experienced a stretch of irregular irradiated weather and frequent radstorms. A number of people living nearby began experiencing acute radiation poisoning from the storms, including two that ghoulified. Mercy had unexpectedly become pregnant again earlier in the year, but opted to continue her work anyways. She suffered a stillbirth in late July as a result of the additional radiation exposure, and then began to go through ghoulification herself a few weeks afterwards; it took her approximately two months to fully ghoulify.
Mercy began to pick up an interest in radiation-induced mutations, as well as ghoulification, after recovering. She's able to dissect a number of animals as the community's livestock and companion animals ghoulify or develop new mutations in the years following all of the radstorms. This became something of a hobby to her and she began to develop some of her theories on mutations during this time.
Mercy & Frances’ son, Isaac, is killed by wildlife in 2106 at 22 years old. Mercy took the loss hard and stepped back from her work for a year or so to recover. During this time she got significantly more involved with the homestead and learned a number of skills, including horseback riding and roping, during this time. A few years after this, Celeste married someone from a neighboring community and moved out. She stayed in contact with Mercy and Frances for a few years, but later lost contact after moving again.
Frances died of natural causes in 2153. Mercy sold the remainder of their livestock afterwards and attempted to throw herself into her work, but only held out for a few months; she later decided to burn their homestead one night and fled the area afterwards.
Drifter Era Mk. I: 2154-2281
Mercy moved back towards the West coast after leaving Wyoming and began to live as a drifter rather than stay in one location. She frequently did courier work and picked up bounty hunting, and frequently worked as a “doctor” while in more populated areas. She primarily stayed around northern & central California, but made her way to Washington state and the Gulf of California a handful of times.
Despite the lack of equipment, she continued to study and observe wasteland mutations when she came across them. She began taking mutated bones, teeth, etc when she came across them. She also picked up an interest in studying feral ghouls, especially after realizing they’re non-hostile towards other ghouls.
Around 2240, Mercy was introduced to the Followers. She briefly attended the Angel's Boneyard Medical University through the faction, but left before completing their program due to some concern surrounding her background. She continued to support their cause around the wasteland but opted against joining them.
After 2240, she began to pick up an interest in checking out the labs & facilities she’d been at before the war to try and recover the research she’d been working on. She had very limited success on the West Coast given that the locations she focused on are The Glow & Mariposa Military Base.
New Vegas Era: 2281-2283
Mercy got shot by Benny over the platinum chip on October 19, 2281. She had minimal memory loss after this, but frequently had migraines along with issues involving her impulse control and emotional regulation. She eventually made a full recovery in 2283.
I’m not going deep into this since y’all know this plot; she went full independent Vegas ending and she’s openly hostile towards the NCR and Legion. She killed and ate Caesar, Kimball, Benny, House, & Vulpes in the main storyline.
Drifter Era Mk. II: 2283-Current
Mercy decided to begin heading towards the east coast, with Boston and D.C. as her final destinations in mind. She finally arrived in the Commonwealth in Summer 2288.
Prior to leaving Nevada, she forcibly borrowed a hayburner from a NCR ranger. She named the hayburner Karma and later discovered that Karma’s aggressive towards strangers.
She made various stops around major cities while traveling cross-country, including Chicago and New York City. She frequently dug around in these regions to seek out Enclave remnants; she successfully found and eliminated a few small groups scattered around the Midwest.

Rosaline (2022): Romeo and Juliet From the Perspective of the Ex Who Has Her Shit Together (Kinda)
Romeo and Juliet is a classic. Everyone and their mother knows how the story goes. They met, they fell in love. They were told no, but they said yes, I love you. In a series of stupid events, they die. You could show a picture of a knife, a bottle of poison, and two dead bodies, and it would be obvious that this is Romeo and Juliet.
The funny thing is, Rosaline was Romeo's first love and was the source of Romeo's depression because she wanted to remain pure (Romeo's sad boi era). When Romeo met Juliet, he then asked himself if he was ever in love with Rosaline in the first place. And that's the end of Rosaline's existence in the play.
The premise of the 2022 Hulu Original, Rosaline, is the whole Romeo and Juliet bit, but funnier and without them dying. It is, as described, a comedic retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Rosaline is the ex who doesn't want to be an ex, an ambitious and intelligent young woman whom her father keeps pawning off to different men. Romeo, a romantic sad boi, and Juliet, the naive Capulet. And my favorite new character, Dario Penza, Of course, there is homosexual Paris and Steve the Courier. Every character in the film has depth, and it was a genuinely fun movie. It's been years since companies made fun movies, and Rosaline joins in with the comeback of the 90s. style rom-com.
Tumblr media
Let's focus on why I love Dario Penza. First, is that he emits so much Oscar Isaac energy, and I love that. Second, his lines are stupidly funny, and he says them in such a natural way. Third, the eyes are acting babe, and I am a sucker for eyes that act. And my favorite reason is that he stands like he carries the world on his shoulders. The posture is bad and I can absolutely relate.
Tumblr media
Final thoughts: The movie is fun and requires absolutely no mental energy to watch. It's the kind of movie you can rewatch just for fun. I genuinely adore how stupid everyone is except Rosaline and Dario. I love them. This is what Shakespeare would have wanted.
P.S. I call them stupid because I love them.

1, 5, 25, 31, andddd 39 for isaac :3
1. Do they have any crafting hobbies?
Isaac loves to sew and paint! Sewing is something he learned from his mother that he didn't lose when he lost his memories, he just doesn't recall it was her that taught him it. Painting he picked up since he struggles so much to do things like read and write- it's very therapeutic for him and makes him feel like he's actually capable of creating something worthwhile.
5. Do they have any tattoos? If so what are they and do they have any special meaning?
He has a lotus flower tattoo on his back between his shoulder blades that covers one of the scars he got from the Legion. Isaac and Arcade found a book that had the meanings of flowers with photos in it, and when he saw that the lotus flower symbolizes strength/resilience/rebirth it struck a cord with him and it felt like the most appropriate thing to get to cover one of his scars with more painful memories- even as distant and scattered as they were.
25. Do they have a daily/nightly routine?
Routine doesn't come easily to Isaac even though it's one of the few things that gives him a sense of stability in his life. That's just another of the seemingly endless side effects caused by his amnesia and brain damage. He does have a morning/nightly routine of sorts- but he usually needs assistance from Arcade and Boone to keep it up, which is taking his medicines. One daily routine he doesn't struggle with is taking care of his dogs- he walks them every day (assuming his health allows it.) For a monthly routine he bathes/grooms them and all that jazz. His dogs provide a surpring amount of structure in his life.
31. What superpower would you choose for them and what would they choose for themselves? If they have one would they choose something else?
Isaac would probably choose some kind of healing ability, without a doubt. It would make it far easier to care for his loved ones and pets. I would honestly choose the same for him- but also for the reason that he very much could use something like that with how reckless he is, although i doubt he would use it on himself willingly.
39. Would they ever crash a wedding?
He absolutely would not. Love and romance are something very important and sacred for him- both for his own relationships and others. Attending weddings is probably one of the things he enjoys most, and he gets pretty emotional at them. He would never have any reason to crash one and ruin someone's special day.

So given that Mormonism is almost dead and it's very possible for the Courier to have never heard of Christianity, I'm trying to brainstorm post-war beliefs. What do you think people swear by? What sort of religions, superstitions, rituals, etc. have sprung up in the wake of the bombs? (Note that I've only extensively played FNV so far of the series so I don't know about other games' stuff much.)
This is an incredible question and really fun to consider. Gonna tag the expert @calder to weigh in on canon (and beyond) too.
Christianity is a bigger influence in Fallout 3. Revelation 21:6 is the favorite bible verse of James and Catherine, the Lone Wanderer's parents, and it's quoted multiple times. That's probably the most overt reference outside of Joshua's Mormonism, but the wiki has a log here if you want to see more. It's also incomplete, since it doesn't mention Arcade quoting Isaac in Genesis 22, but still a good source for what's mentioned in canon. Given how ridiculously invasive Christianity is in U.S. American politics/culture and how inextricably tied it is to the jingoism, racism, McCarthyism, American exceptionalism etc. that the Fallout games were meant to critique, I don't think you could effectively do Fallout without it coming up. I'm trying not to write a whole dissertation on how Chrisitianity has influenced U.S. politics right now (tho maybe someday), but even where you don't have actual Christians, I think you're still going to have a lot of Christian influence. I wouldn't be surprised by people still swearing on a Christian bible or saying "Jesus Christ" or the like as an exclamation, even in places in the wasteland where Christianity isn't practiced or particularly well-known, since that has become so integrated into the language (similar to how the days of the week in English are named after ancient Norse deities even though very few people in the U.S./England practice that religion). Fallout 4 starts to explore new post-war superstitions and religions with the Children of Atom, and 76 goes even a bit further with Mothman and some other cultish beliefs, but I haven't spent as much time playing those or the games before Bethesda, so I'll let others way in on that for now.
This is already so long and I haven't even begun speculating about stuff that isn't directly supported by canon, so I may just make some more posts after this. I love the idea of a cult centered around the power of nuclear weapons, but the Children of Atom didn't really do it like I would have, so I can outline my ideas about that later, too. I'd like to explore the concept of radiation as akin to fae or spirits, which is probably not something that meshes well realistically (virtually everyone knows what radiation is and wouldn't need to explain radiation poisoning as a ghost's curse, for example), but I think it would be Fun.
Nuclear semiotics in Fallout is so fascinating to consider. Like the idea of narrow triangles and spiky symbols becoming taboo because they're associated with the hostile architecture of long-time nuclear waste sites. Of course, the point behind hostile architecture like that is that we already associate thorny shapes with danger. Maybe phrases or folk wisdom develops around the idea of a problem compared to the size of your thumb, related to using your thumb as a measurement against a mushroom cloud to determine if you're in a fallout zone. "A problem bigger than your thumb" is serious, whereas "a knuckle" is considered a less urgent issue.

When Ulysses' words first came through the tinny speakers of the eyebot in the divide, every word dripping with barely contained rage, Isaac was ready to match him for that rage bit by bit.
He didn't like people getting up in his business, least of all business he tried to leave behind.
The business Ulysses was getting up in was even worse, though - it was something Isaac hadn't even spent much thought on. He'd turned a blind eye to it and wanted to keep it that way, and now he felt he was getting his nose rubbed in his own shit.
But as he walked the divide and that initial rage subsided, he started to see more clearly again; started to see the bigger picture.
He didn't know what he would have done had he met Ulysses face to face before he'd reached the end of that long road. In a way, Ulysses had trained him in something after all, as much as it hurt Isaac's pride to admit that. Ulysses had given him time to think. Had forced him to take that time to think, if he was being honest.
Since time was something Issac rarely granted himself. Or maybe it was the wasteland that didn't grant him that time. Because time spend in your own head, unaware of the world around you, was nothing more than a risk of getting yourself killed. At least he'd always looked at it that way. Maybe that was something he'd gotten wrong, too. Another thing he'd wilfully turned a blind eye to.
And whether Ulysses had meant to or not, that thinking time had also made Isaac want to pull Ulysses out of his own rage as well. No matter how hard he would try to fight it.
