Wangxian in Ep5 vs. Ep49.

It's always fun to juxtapose teenage Wangxian with mature Wangxian (let's just assume dying and what happened before that, and being dead for 10+ years did mature Wei Wuxian). And the change in them and in their dynamics is so well portrayed in these two screencaps.

Young Wei Wuxian, so whimsical, flirty and keen on getting under Lan Wangji's skin and into his personal space, on getting to know him; Lan Wangji turning into himself, physically maintaining distance and his rigid self control, avoiding direct eye contact, definitely not interested (as if!).

Some sixteen or so years and a resurrection later: Lan Wangji, so self-assured and settled into himself, fiercely protective and unbearably fond and proud, holding Wei Wuxian with his body slightly leaning closer, holding unwawering eye contact. And Wei Wuxian, more serious, looking a bit like he still cannot quite believe Lan Wangji is doing that, that this is his reality now, while giving him an assurance that all is fine. Their silent conversations ❤️.

LXC: Since you have admitted having done the previous two deeds, I have another question for you. What about Jin Zixuan? Don't even try to make any excuses for yourself, just tell me! Did you plan the death of Young Master Jin?

JGY: I indeed didn't run into Jin Zixuan by accident.

WWX: What exactly did you do? What did you do?! Speak!

JZX: A-Yao, what are you doing here? What's wrong?

JGY: It's nothing, nothing.

I love the decision to match Meng Yao's clothing exactly to the colour scheme of the Cloud Recesses buildings in ep4:

Like, look at that! Meng Yao quite literally blending into the background - as if perfectly camouflaged, image perfectly chosen to suit his current setting… or as if he belongs there, as if he fits in perfectly to this specific place.

And then there's Lan Xichen in his customary blue, accented with white, matching the shades of the tassels and hangings. He, too, looks perfectly placed in this setting, as if he is a natural extension or an integral part of it - as of course he is; this is after all his home - but rather than blending seamlessly with the background he is part of the tasteful ornamentation that draws the eye, beautiful and noticeable though without being ostentatious.

And so when you put them together they make for a visually perfect pair in this setting. As if they belong here together, complementing one another as they complete the picture; one aligned with the unobtrusive but crucial structure and one with the restrained but lovely ornamentation, in perfect balance.

To paraphrase the title of one of the songs from the soundtrack... if only life could have been like that first meeting.

Watching CQL ep49 for the upteenth time and the way Lan Wangji shakes his head at his brother to stop whatever objection he might have, and then nods at Wei Wuxian to go ahead with his funky little resentful energy tunes. And then Jiang Cheng throws WWX his flute, and we see he has feelings about it when WWX starts to play it. The fact that WWX has the backing of both his bae and his bro has me feeling things too.

And if that isn't enough to make me emotional, then there's Wen Ning. Slicing up his hand to stop Baxia from splitting Jin Ling's head open. And Jiang Cheng is watching all this like he's reevaluating his entire worldview. And when WWX leads Baxia to the coffin like the pied piper, and he blasts Wen Ning away and LWJ catches him. People realizing that Wen Ning is Good actually and must be Protected, is my jam.

LXC: Clan Leader Jin, I have made it clear to you, when you so obstinately planned the Burial Mounds Siege, that you should never call me "Second Brother" again.

JGY: What happened at Burial Mounds was a moment of weakness, a huge mistake. But there was no turning back for me.

LWJ: Xiongzhang, don't talk too much with him.

WWX: That's right, Zewu-Jun. Have you forgotten what you just said to Sect Leader Jiang? Don't waste energy talking with him.
