5 TIPS FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION
Health Nut Writer: Alyssa Harrington
School is back in full swing and it’s time to hit the books.  The first couple weeks of class can be an overwhelming experience for many college students. Learning to juggle a new set of courses, personal health & wellness, jobs and playtime is no easy task.  So, Health Nut compiled a handy list of top 5 tips to support a smooth transition back into student life. Whether you’re a returning senior or an incoming freshman, give these a try!
1 CREATE A ROUTINE First things first.  Invest in a planner. Then, look ahead in the course syllabus and write down all assignments due dates.  That way, all to-do’s are in one place! Know your priorities and manage your time with the intent to stay ahead of the game. If you can construct a personal schedule (work, play, etc.) around schoolwork and deadlines, it will be much easier to stick to a solid routine!
2 EAT BREAKFAST  The most important meal of the day. Create a consistent morning ritual with this single tip in mind and you will notice a difference throughout your day.  Not only does eating a healthy breakfast help boost metabolism, but it also allows for sustained energy and longer lasting focus and attention span. A sharp mind is the key to a productive day.
** Keep an eye out for “Healthy Breakfast Prep on a College Budget” **
3 ALLOW TIME FOR YOURSELF It is essential to practice self-care during a stressful semester; whatever that looks like for you.  It could be alone time, nap time, gym time, time with friends and family, or all of the above.  However, finding a balance can be tricky. One option is to give yourself a study deadline - get as much accomplished as you can manage in 2 hours, then reward yourself with a trip to the gym or go see a movie with friends! When it feels like you’ve earned the free time, you’re less likely to put off studying in the future.
4 ASK FOR HELP  The feeling that comes with realizing a professor has learned your name and wants you to succeed is motivating. Asking for help does not have to be a cry, it can be a proactive move! Even if it’s not typically your style, attending office hours is very telling of the kind of student you want to be.  It exemplifies a motivation to succeed and an interest in the class, which can lead to elevated confidence and a boosted final grade. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
** The Writing Center is also a very great resource available to students free of charge. **
5 TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME Don’t let the sudden influx of impending due dates break your focus, you have everything mapped out, right? Stick to the plan day by day. It’s easy to get flustered when all you can focus on is everything you have to get done this semester. Don’t panic. Work hard, strive for excellence and try not to get ahead of yourself.
It’s never too late to create positive habit change. By committing to these 5 tips, you are choosing to set yourself up for success, one step at a time.
You got this, UM.
