Adobe creative types
Unlike other personality tests I have done, I found this test fun and easy. The questions were quirky and made me actually think about how I would describe myself instead of how others look at me. The short videos in between question mad the questions seem less daunting and made me want to be truthful instead of hiding parts like other tests. It made me want to explore myself instead of thinking how I want people to see me. I loved how I could not tell what they were going to ask next. This made the questions take me off guard and made me laugh.
Tumblr media
Using a decorate ink, script typeface for the word create instantly introduces a playful tone. This shows the user that they should not take the test too seriously. By using a sans serif typefaces for the secondary information they have stopped the page from looking too busy. This would have also make the text illegible. I like how this gives the design a contemporary and modern feel which will appeal to an older audience.
Tumblr media
The typefaces for the title in constantly in motion, changing colours and pattern. This implies that the results are constantly changing throughout the test. It tells the reader that their are no preconceived ideas behind the results but they are solely based on their answers. It also holds a playful tone which makes the fell of the test consistent throughout the web pages. Using the same sans serif typeface for the secondary information also makes the design consistent.
Tumblr media
The first question took me off guard because I was expecting a question loosely link to creativity. Instead it is focusing on how I make plans. This made me take a minute and think about my answer which made my answer more truthful.
I like how they have used dots at the bottom left side of the page. This tells me that I am on the 1st question of 15. By including this information they have made me feel informed even though I can not predict what question will come next. By using a sans serif typeface for the text they have linked the question pages to the title pages. By placing the text in the middle of the page they have also made the layout of the pages consistent. This makes me feel less lost because I can tell where I need to look for the information and question each time.
Tumblr media
By using the same colours for the video as the blurred image used for the background of the question, they have introduced the idea that the video is influenced by your answer. This made me want to be more truthful with my answers because I wanted to see which videos they think represent me.
I like how they have included option to mute or skip the video. This makes it suitable for a larger audience because some may find the videos unimportant or uncomfortable to way. Furthermore, they have included a timer that tells you much longer the video will play. This makes you less likely to skip it because you know it only has so may seconds left.
Tumblr media
The second question surprised me becuause it made me think about how I work which I did not expect since the first question made me think about how I plan. The abstract questions made it easier to think about my answers because it gave me prompts to discover how my brain works when thinking, planning and organising. It also made me realise that some of the methods I have used, such as the pomodoro technique, may not work for me instantly because I need to train my brain to work in a different way.
The background made me curious about what the video will be for this question because it uses a different colour palette than the first question.
Tumblr media
I found this video satisfying to watch which was soothing. It made me feel more relaxed and looking forward to the rest of the test. I like how they have not kept to one single background colour because this makes the videos more engaging and the questions less tedious.
Tumblr media
However, I found this video hard to watch because the visuals and sound made me feel uncomfortable. This made me curious about how they chose what videos to paly for the question. I am also curious about whether videos appeal to different people depending on how you think.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found that some of the videos were easy to connect to the questions. For example the second video was connected to the statement 'Everything is connected', which I answered true. This tells me that the video is based on the answer to the question.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I could not find any connection between the questions and videos in these images. This made me confused because earlier in the test, I assumed that the videos were chosen by your answers since the background of the question was a blurred image of the video. However, as I went through the test I found these videos which I could not connect to the question. This made me think about whether the videos could be influenced by the overall image being built by the answers instead of being focused on a single question.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I got my results I found that they are quite positive about what creative type you are. Instead of focusing on what you should do and what you are suited for like other personality tests, they have focused on why your may find parts of the creative process easier. This encourages you to look at the way you work more positively and stop comparing yourself to other people. It tells me that how I think does make how I work differently. This encourages me to adapt my creative process more adapted to me. IT also tells me what type of people I should collaborate with to bring my work to a new level and why. By including reasoning behind the things it tells me, I am more inclined to take action because I understand the results better.
I like how they have used a creative representation of a person because this gives the information page the creative tone used throughout the test. This makes the results feel less daunting and something to be celebrated
Using videos after every questions has placed the users focus on the process instead of the results. I like how this is linked to the creative process because we are told to stop focusing on the final outcome and enjoy the process. This shows that the Thought process and psychology behind the creative process is embedded in the test. It shows that the creative process can be enjoyed as much as I enjoyed the test as long as you give yourself time to explore the process.
Looking back, I like how they have used a while background for the opening pages because it shows that there is a blank canvas. This tells me that the results are based on only the answers and not any outside preconceptions.
I am interested in looking at how I could use abstract and fun questions like these to help identify how the user works. This will allow me to get a better understanding on what methods and resources will help the user manage their time more efficiently. I would also like to look explore methods of including the visuals into the test. I will also look at if the colour choices I use could also represent the results.

Telling stories through design
We checked in with recent alum Lucas Southworth (Digital Media and Design, Theatre) about his position at Xavier University. He is the "Electronic Media Specialist" in Enrollment Management. He calls himself a “jack-of-all-trades” for different media requests, from postcards to flyers to email graphics to web updates to photo and video work.
Tumblr media
The work I do at Xavier is really diverse, but the Digital Media and Design program really prepared me for that. Students in DMD are able, and really are expected, to take a wide variety of design classes, from photography and video making to typography and web design. This gave me a solid and wide base of knowledge that I am applying to this position. So when my boss comes to me and says "Hey Lucas, do you have any experience editing video?" or "Do you know anything about coding?" I am able to answer YES with confidence.
One assignment that I think of often came from Mia Cinelli's Typography class. She had us find a print piece in the wild somewhere that we thought had poor typography, and then recreate the piece to fix these issues. This process of dissecting a design's weak points and building it back up from there is something I try to apply every time I create a new draft of my work.
My Theatre degree is also helping out daily! Not only in directly applicable skills (a sizable chunk of my practical video editing experience comes from my time and classwork in Projection Design) but in more subtle ways as well. A lot of the work I do boils down to telling a story effectively, and storytelling was what my time in the Theatre department was all about.
Lucas has a word of advice for current students:
Pursue what you are interested in. It was a scary for me when I realized I wanted to add a second major in my junior year, but I was surrounded by a very supporting group of professors and advisors in both the Theatre and Digital Media and Design programs who made the process work as smoothly as possible, and adding that major is directly what got me my current job.

UK Grad Student Singing in Met’s ‘Porgy and Bess’
Singing on the Metropolitan Opera stage is a lifelong dream for many young opera vocalists, and one University of Kentucky doctoral candidate, Makeda Hampton, is among the chosen few currently performing at America’s most prestigious opera house. But for this previous math and chemistry student, a dream to perform didn't take center stage until a bit later.
