Heal the Collective Trauma Caused by Hurricane Maria, 2017
Illustration for the Center for Cultural Power (formerly CultureStrike)
“Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were devastated by Hurricane Maria. As the islands rebuild, there is an opportunity to reimagine a sustainable, self-determined, and people-powered future. Our friends at AgitArte, a Puerto Rico-based arts organization, developed a 10-step action plan to achieve this vision.
8. HEAL THE COLLECTIVE TRAUMA CAUSED BY HURRICANE MARIA. Our people have suffered physical trauma and psychological abuse - environmental, exacerbated by social insult and political ridicule - and we must create spaces of mourning and healing. Our healing is a priority so that our pain does not last for generations.

Staff Pick of the Week
My staff pick this week is We are the Storm: Climate Portfolio, a limited edition of 22 prints created by CultureStrike and Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative – featuring a diverse lineup of artists: people of color, migrant, indigenous, and environmentalist visual artists from across North America. It was printed in 2016 in a limited edition of 100 and includes both offset and screen prints. It was a collaborative process in which artists were asked to highlight different environmental organizations doing work on the local level with community groups. I chose this portfolio as my staff pick because I believe that art can help move the conversation forward on these issues.
The Introduction reads:
“This Climate Portfolio is a collection of fine art prints depicting the powerful work of grassroots organizations and groups that are working to defend the most impacted communities against large-scale industrial fossil-fuel projects and helping to build resilience in communities affected by global warming.
As climate disasters continue to wreak havoc on communities around the globe, climate deniers increasingly dominate the mainstream debate around climate change. Their perpetuation of myths about the effects of global warming and climate change stand in the way of social and environmental progress towards a more balanced way of life on our planet, and point to an urgent need for art and culture that can inspire and educate people about the truth.”
UWM Special Collections currently holds four Justseeds portfolios besides We are the Storm, they are: Resourced, War is Trauma, and This is an Emergency!: A Reproductive Rights + Gender Justice Portfolio.

✊🏽🌎 Art for Earth gathering hosted by @culturestrike this week was everything I needed. Bringing together innovators across creative industries, artists, and community leaders. Together we are expanding our knowledge and power in envisioning #ClimateJustice. Moving with a deep understanding that our movements are deeply interconnected to one another and the land. It means we understand the power of artists, art, and culture in dreaming of the world we all can all live in - out side of an extractive economy, outside of white supremacy and in alignment with all living things on earth. A big shout outs to the @culturestrike team for holding it down . Thank you to our comms team @califasdesigns ans @la_chucha for holding it down all week with overall climate events. Thank you to our amazing photographer and videographer @eslvis + reporter at march @thechosenlyfe . Love to @juliosalgado83 for flying out to help teammates out. And a big big shout outs to @wildbirdmagik and @favianna1 for all the logistics and management. Elena you kicked ass !!! So proud of our team and so thrilled to have witnessed such an incredible convening. Because of it more and more artists and cultural workers are getting engaged with climate change and ecological justice. And that shows how powerful artists can be!! And how we ultimately are shifting the narrative of “save the polor bear” to one that really uplifts marginalized communities. Abolish piping lines and abolish prisons!! Both intertwined!! #Artists4Climate #BayArea #EnvironmentalJustice #EJ #GCAS2018 #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #CultureStrike #Decolonize #HonorTheEarth https://www.instagram.com/p/BnsMoouH_Fr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xhi3iryv7j19

Welcome to our first 2018 @culturestrike editorial cartoon! Anyone else catch the Golden Globes this last weekend? There's lot to be said about #timesup and all of the actresses who attended the awards show wearing black, but undoubtedly, Oprah's acceptance speech (after receiving the Golden Globe Cecile B. DeMille Award) is the highlight that everyone is talking about. Opinions about Oprah's speech immediately cropped up throughout the Internet. While there was widespread appreciation and support, there was also plenty of know-nothings complaining about Oprah getting political during an awards show, and leftists questioning whether Oprah was the right person to deliver such a potent, important, and timely message. Maybe the presentation was not entirely perfect in messaging and inclusive of all the issues that are important in the social justice realm. But it is a wildly successful moment of cultural intervention. Oprah's reach is unfathomable for many of us. She has influence that many on the left wish we had. She is a cultural icon of our time, and to have her use her platform to further the message of the #metoo and #TimesUp movement is incredibly important. It must have also been a gargantuan undertaking for the activists who organized all the celebrities (including Oprah) to be on message and to make a statement in a high profile awards show. It made the message more culturally visible, and while many may feel like the moment could be co-opted by celebrities who aren't close to the grassroots efforts, the fact that the conversation has now proceeded to be amplified by the likes of Oprah is a big opportunity. Whether you agree or disagree that Oprah was the correct messenger, one thing is for sure: the platform for the conversation around equity for women in our society has just gotten larger, more prominent, and louder. And we think that this is a good thing in the grand scheme of our goals as cultural workers. Kudos and congratulations to the amazing and unmatched Oprah! Artwork by @juliosalgado83. #foodforthought 🤔 #repost @withregram • @culturestrike Now is a time of reflection and empathy. For many of us, the #Coronavirus pandemic has flipped our lives in ways our society’s marginalized communities are familiar with. This is why we must always lean on and center the leadership and experience of undocumented folks, disabled folks, low-income and houseless folks, etc. Our gratitude to artists who are sharing their brilliance, talent, and personal narratives to help us process and overcome this pandemic. #art by @juliosalgado83 ・・・ And after this is over, I hope conversations about family separations continue worldwide. Welcome to another @culturestrike editorial cartoon. Last week, the Trump administration made the move to dismantle Temporary Protected Status (TPS), leaving nearly 300,000 people vulnerable to deportation. TPS is a program that grants a temporary visa to refugees that allow them to live and work in the U.S. while also giving them some protection from being made to return to their home countries. The U.S. has granted TPS to refugees from 10 countries, all which have been devastated by natural disasters or wars: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. It's difficult to look at the termination of this program and not wonder what will become of this nations, especially since many of them have experienced U.S. interference in some way, whether military or bureaucratic. So how can we end the program and begin sending people back to countries where there is still an immense amount of disparity and violence? How do we reconcile this move with the sins of American presence and intervention in these various nations? The U.S. should not remove the program and destabilize the lives of 300k refugees once more. Doing so just adds more unnecessary trauma and anxiety to the lives and complexities of the refugees who have built here. Putting an additional 300k people in the crosshairs of DHS' detention and deportation machinery is as cowardly as it gets. Artwork by @juliosalgado83. Migration Now is a collection of prints dealing with various issues related to migration. Each print is created by a separate artist, listed below. The project was envisioned and collected by Just Seeds and Culture Strike and published in 2012. Despite being five years old, these prints remain extremely relevant today. The artists found creative, unique, and inspiring ways to express the intense issues that face migrants. The portfolio begins with a strong stance, stating "Migration is a phenomenon, not a problem - something that simply is. The freedom to migrate is our human right. When societies restrict or choke off the movements of their citizens, they create a dam which is doomed to fail. It might control the flood for a while, but will destroy both people and nature in the process." Whether you agree or disagree with the sentiments presented here, this is a thought provoking-work and clearly born of passion and personal experience. It is difficult to feel completely involved in the political system, but art remains vital tool for the expression of beliefs and opinions.

In 48 hours I flew out to Bay Area to be with @culturestrike team to have a bunch of meetings, team building sessions, and training ... and now flying back to NYC on red eye to make it home for my artist in residency event +birthday celebration and then fly back to West Coast to be in LA for film festival next week . As I mentioned on my IG stories , I am thrilled to be going into 5+ years with this kick ass of a team as we shift culture and create the necessary structures, resources, and tools for artists and cultural workers specially of color / #qtpoc / #migrant to create , imagine and shift power. CultureStrike is only evolving and growing and headed into a new chapter of its growth. I am actually excited to walk into my 29th birthday on Monday knowing I’m part of this large vision and evolving team. Thank you to staff for adventurous and busy 28th year at CS , thank you to the artists I’ve met along the way who have become my family like @breenache @migrantscribble @lawrencelindellstudios @lupedoesmakeup , and thank you to all the contractors and partner orgs, consultants and new artists in our network that have enabled big vision dreaming and advancing our mission/vision. Our team kicks major ass , summer is filled with super awesome content and programs and planning. This is a fruitful and beautiful time to be artist activists and to be imagining and creating. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to go into my 29th birthday week celebration [ side note: thank you @oratoryglory for the awesome training today and the books!!! ] #art #artist #qtpoc #queer #migrant #latinx #gendernonconforming #femmesofcolorvisibility #culturestrike #pridemonth #art #socialjustice #culturalworker (at CultureStrike)
