A Sailor With Nothing
Vasco x De Sardet
Word Count: 1.4K Warnings: None
Author's Note: Hi, I started playing GF again and I'm back on my Vasco whoring shit. -Thorne
**********************************************************************
Vasco wakes slowly, like the waves that crash against the hull of the ship when they’re docked at port; it does sound unusually quiet on the ship though and something tells him to get up and go see what his men are doing lazing about, but he can’t find it in himself to rise. Sun streams through the window in his cabin as he shifts in the bed, arching his lower back as he digs his face further into the pillow. The warmth bleeds along his back and he lets out a long sigh as he begins to lull deeper into sleep once more. That is until the scent of cinnamon and leather reaches his senses, and he cracks a single golden eye open, taking in the crimson walls and unfamiliar portraits on the walls.
He realizes all at once that he is in fact, not aboard his ship nor is he in his bed in his captain’s quarters, but in an unfamiliar yet very familiar bed. He lifts his head, blinking blearily around the room, then he turns to his side where he sees De Sardet quietly flicking through a few documents that Petrus wanted him to review from the night before.
“You snore like an old dog when you’re completely exhausted,” he says without moving his sharp eyes from the pages. “Did you know that?”
Vasco blinks again, flopping over onto his side to lazily stare at De Sardet. “How long have you been awake?”
“A few hours, give or take a couple minutes.”
“You should’ve woken me,” Vasco mutters, rolling onto his back, though he inconspicuously shifts closer to De Sardet’s side. “I’m sure the others are wondering why we haven’t set out yet.”
“And yet, none have come up here to tell me that they want to, so I think we’re in the clear.” De Sardet absentmindedly curls his arm around Vasco’s head, palm flat along his toned and tan chest, thumb brushing circles in his skin. “How are you feeling?”
“Not as sore as I assumed I would be.”
“I can’t help but wonder if perhaps that is a good thing because I was thorough on preparation or if it is a bad thing because I didn’t perform well. The latter would severely damage my pride.”
Vasco can’t help but snicker and he turns his head, lips brushing against De Sardet’s hand as he replies, “Preparation was good, and you were even better.”
“Well, now I feel like you’re just stroking my ego.”
“I am, but don’t let it go to your head,” he murmurs, turning back to face him. “It’s in fact, quite large.”
De Sardet still hasn’t looked at him, and Vasco hopes that the next words that come from the Legate’s mouth after this aren’t what his worst fears are. Because he’s slept with nobles before but he also knows that this might be the last time he ever does.
He clears his throat quietly, gazing out the window as he repeats aloud, “Those who fear the waters should stay within the shore’s sight. Those who fear the pain that love procures, should shun the flames when love endures. And both shall be safe from founder and blight.” His fingers dig into his ribs in hesitation. “That’s the next part of the poem. De Sardet…are you afraid of sinking?”
“Hmm…”
It’s a quick and clean grunt that severs every muscle in Vasco’s young and fiery heart. A flame so carefully tended suddenly snuffed out, deprived of life. And it hurts. It hurts worse than the first time he’d ever gotten his heart broken.
“I understand,” he murmurs, trying not to let his heart fall out of his throat, tears in his eyes as he slips from the warmth of the noble beside him, feet touching the cold floor that causes the second break in reality as it really comes to life that De Sardet didn’t want him like he did. How could he be so foolish as to offer a noble his heart? Him, a man with nothing to his name, nothing to offer De Sardet in terms of equality. A single sailor with nothing. “I swear I won’t let this affect our work. I’ll see to it that—”
“For if water could quench loves dying embers, your love that burns and pain and severs, I would douse this fire with the sea of all my tears.”
Vasco stops dead in his tracks, staring up at De Sardet in shock, fingers stilling from where he was tying his pant laces. Did he just—
“Such an impatient lover I have,” he notes, finally looking up over the documents; his eyes pierce the very depths of Vasco’s soul as he adds, almost chastising, “You are not the only one who has read that poem more times than he cares to admit in order to one day speak it to the one he loves.”
“You…you feel the same?”
De Sardet merely raises a hand, crooks a finger in a beckoning motion that books no room for any other answer than to obey; and Vasco obeys, crawling back onto the bed as he watches the Legate set the documents on the table followed by the glasses he’d been wearing, and Vasco has half a mind to make a joke about him being hard of sight and that’s why his accuracy is terrible.
He pulls Vasco down atop him, wrapping his arms around the Naut’s bare back, one arm secured tightly around his middle, the other hand firmly at the back of his neck, thumb brushing the base of his skull.
“I thought you didn’t feel the same as I.”
“Now we know to wait before we jump to conclusions, Captain Vasco,” he retorts, tugging at a caramel strand; he sighs wistfully, hugging the sailor impossibly close as he buries his nose in Vasco’s hair, breathing in the scent of gunpowder and sea salt. “I would follow you to the ends of the earth if it meant I would be with you forever, Vasco,” he murmurs, hand shifting from the back of his neck to cup his chin, tilting the sailor’s face to look at him; he gently caresses the cheek of his lover and confesses, “I love you.”
Vasco’s entire body feels as light as the sail catching a breeze and he smiles at De Sardet. “We shall set sail on the bitter seas together, my Tempest.”
The man’s expression softens in a way that Vasco has never seen before and suddenly knows that it is only for him; he lays his head back down on De Sardet’s chest, eyes slipping shut as he breathes in deeply, all negative feelings leaving his body.
And as much as he doesn’t want to say it, he does. “And we should begin to get ready. We can’t waste daylight. We’ve too much to do.”
De Sardet lets out a long and whiney sounding groan, wallowing against the bedsheets as Vasco laughs. “I do not want to move. I want to stay here all day.”
I want to stay here all day with you. Is the unspoken that has goosebumps rising all over Vasco’s body and he rises slightly, shimmying up De Sardet’s body until he can bury his face in the noble’s neck. “We can spend one more hour here.”
“I am the Legate of the Congregation of Merchants. If I so choose to stay in bed all day with my lover then I shall.”
It makes Vasco giddy to hear him be called De Sardet’s lover. “One hour.”
“You’re no fun.”
“Someone has to keep you accountable.”
“Then in turn, someone must also keep me satisfied,” De Sardet purrs, and it takes all of one intake of breath before Vasco is staring dazedly up at the Legate who is wearing a rather hungry look. “Well, well, well, look what we have here. I seem to have found my source of satisfaction.”
Vasco squirms under De Sardet’s heavy grip, suddenly very aware of how close their hips are, practically slotted together. “De Sardet…” he starts. “We don’t have enough time for this.”
“Oh, we have enough,” he replies, dipping down to take the sailor’s lips in a searing kiss that has Vasco panting when they part, body set aflame with desire; De Sardet nudges their noses. “I love you,” he murmurs, fingers tracing at the black-inked tattoos along Vasco’s chest and abdomen.
The Naut swallows thickly, unable to fight the fluttering in his chest as he breathes softly, “I love you, my Tempest.”

Some rambles on the ending and the codependent nature of Constantin and De Sardet's relationships. Spoilers for the whole game under the cut.
When I played Greedfall for the first time, I couldn’t stop thinking about Constantin’s corruption arc. It didn’t really make sense to me. Why would he want absolute power over the island? He has plenty of power and probably lives quite a luxurious life already. He also says he finds politics boring if De Sardet asks him, so the desire to rule over the whole island full of people seemed to me very out of character.
I do understand that he went mad and everything, but my brain deemed it a boring explanation and kept searching for something more logical.
So here: I think his actions make more sense if they're driven not by greed but by jealousy, less hunger for power and more hunger for absolute love (either platonic or romantic).
Let me explain.
His family is all kinds of messed up. He thinks his father doesn’t care about him, and although we don’t know if he’s actually abusive, I can’t think of any good reason why Constantin would lie about this. His mother, if DLC is to be believed, is responsible for the death of his brother Laurent — Constantin being an heir is clearly more important to her than his wellbeing & mental health after the literal murder of his brother. We don’t know much about Laurent and Constantin’s relationship (although he doesn’t ever mention him & he says nobody cared for him but De Sardet, so maybe it wasn’t good? Maybe Laurent was better suited for politics? That would explain Prince d’Orsay’s disappointment. That’s just my theory though).
Anyway, what I’m saying is that a child needs unconditional love, and judging by this family and Constantin’s line “You've always been the only one to care for me. Our friendship is the only thing that matters to me”, he has only ever received love from De Sardet, which sounds like quite a fertile ground for unhealthy overly attached relationship.
Then the game starts, and the thing is… Well, they are not each other’s everything anymore. De Sardet goes to various cities & talks to every person imaginable & makes new friends, maybe even falls in love. Constantin meanwhile is chained to a palace, especially after his sickness is revealed. De Sardet's world grows beyond him, and he can’t follow them there.
So what do you do when the only person who matters to you grows apart from you? What do you do when you are driven mad with pain and may die alone, and they have to leave you?
Naturally, you find a way to bind them to you for all eternity, and in doing so alienate them from everyone but you. Constantin's smart enough to realize that if De Sardet's friends and allies fought against him, they would turn away if De Sardet joined him. But even if they wouldn't, they're mortal. Their death is inevitable. The only one who can keep De Sardet company for eternity is Constantin. Everyone but him will eventually leave.
That’s why “For you, for us”, that’s why “together, forever”. Not power over the island or some people, but power to keep the only person who loves him unconditionally close to him.
(Again, I acknowledge that this is extremely, extremely unhealthy. That’s exactly what makes their relationship so interesting.)
Anyway, as I said, it feels very in character for him to basically give up on humanity in favor of De Sardet. I can't look at him in the beginning or in the middle and say, “This character would do anything for power”. But I can look at him at any point of the game, any cutscene, and say, “This character would do anything for his loved one”.

Knowledge To Be Shared
Vasco X De Sardet
Word Count: 1.1K Warnings: None
Author's Note: But it's about the bi-pirate!!! -Thorne
**********************************************************************
Vasco had to admit that there were plenty of times that De Sardet had proved himself a noble of true and genuine character. The man practically bled a desire to help people, to raise a sword to injustice, and right any and all wrongs. Even as reserved as the noble could be at times, Vasco saw De Sardet for who he truly was—a good person, through and through.
But even if it were all of the times he saw De Sardet proving himself a good person, it was truly the first instance of seeing a noble even associate with a low-born that had made the greatest impact on Vasco.
Vasco had the rare opportunity to brew a cup of coffee and he sat in the corner, nursing his hot cup as he viewed the mess hall. The Coin Guard and the Prince had already finished breakfast, leaving the others to their food as they chittered about fencing on the deck. It was only a few minutes later that their resident Legate had decided to make his appearance, and Vasco expected him to be wearing his entire armor set (as most nobles did to let the Nauts aboard know that they were in the presence of a royal), but the man was wearing a simple black cotton shirt that was tucked into a pair of dark mahogany trousers. His hair, of course, was taken care of and his face washed, so at least he maintained a level of personal hygiene even if his dress stated otherwise.
He watched as De Sardet fixed himself a plate and sat down towards the end of one of the tables where Jonas, Lauro, and Flavia were sitting. He took out a small booklet, no bigger than his palm and cracked it open, quietly reading its contents as he ate. It was only then that Vasco realized that Jonas’ eyes were on the booklet, occasionally shifting to his hands, then to De Sardet’s face, and he heard Flavia encouraging him.
“Um…Lord De Sardet?” Jonas’ voice was quiet, a little unsure and after De Sardet didn’t respond he cleared his throat and asked a little louder, “Lord De Sardet?”
The noble startled, evidently quite absorbed in his book, blinking as he looked to his side, confused expression breaking way to a welcoming smile as he greeted, “Ah, Jonas! Forgive me, I wasn’t paying attention.”
“It’s aright, my Lord.” He fidgeted in his seat. “I was perhaps wondering if…” his eyes met Flavia’s who smiled brightly at him. “If you had the time…would you teach me…how to read?”
De Sardet blinked, his confusion taking hold again as he asked, “Nauts can’t read?”
Flavia spoke this time. “We lot know enough to get by, but only those that are considered for higher rank are taught. That is unless we learn some other way.”
He looked back at Jonas who was still fidgeting slightly in his seat; a calm smile broke across his face, and he nodded. “I’d be honored to teach you, Jonas.”
“R-really? You would teach me?”
“Of course! Knowledge should be shared by everyone. And being able to read? Now that is something that everyone should be taught. What is life without being able to read a good story before bed?”
The three sailors beside him laughed heartily and he waved Jonas to sit beside him. “What is this?”
“A selection of specific poetry. My mother’s favorite little book that held all of her favorites. It was made specially for her.” He smiled fondly if a little heartbroken at the booklet. “There is no other book like it.” De Sardet laid the book in front of him. “Do you know your letters, Jonas?”
“I do…but putting the words together is a bit harder.” He shifted. “Speaking is easier than writing and reading. It’s strange.”
“No, I understand. It is quite a strange phenomena to be able to hear words and emulate others by learning to speak the same way but seeing words on paper and trying to read and write, is much harder.” He waved a hand. “All the same, we will start with this one. It’s short and simple. Easy enough that you’ll be able sound words out.”
Jonas nodded, ready to prove himself, and Vasco couldn’t help but let his heart feel light at the view before him.
***
Vasco had never felt such an overwhelming yet so calming sense of peace unlike that of being wrapped up in De Sardet’s arms. The man was a giant, stood just a couple inches taller than Kurt and was just as fit, if not more so, and he hugged and held like a bear. Vasco couldn’t even move, not that he wanted to, from where his back was pressed up against the Legate’s chest, legs tangled, the noble’s nose buried in caramel strands, relaxing breath puffing over his neck.
“You’re thinking too loud,” De Sardet muttered into tan skin.
Vasco snorted. “How can you even tell such a thing?”
“Hmm…your thigh tenses whenever you’re in deep thought.” He shifted, resting his chin on his shoulder. “What are you thinking about, my love?”
A giddiness fluttered in the Naut’s chest; he let out a wistful sigh and turned his head. “I was just thinking about when I started viewing you differently.”
De Sardet nodded. “I’ve got to assume it was well into our travels on the island. We’ve certainly met our fair share of opportune moments.”
“Actually, the first moment I thought differently of you was when I saw you teaching Jonas how to read.”
The noble paused, looking down. “You saw?”
“Did you not see me in the corner?”
“…No…?”
Vasco laughed, shaking his head. “I can’t believe you didn’t even see me.”
“I mean, in my defense, I was more concerned about getting some breakfast before it was eaten by ravenous sailors.”
“We are not ravenous!”
“Oh, I don’t know, I’ve seen you after a long day of all work. You look like a ulg devouring a deer.”
“I DO NOT!”
“I quite literally saw you tear into a turkey leg the other night with nothing but your teeth. Like a ravenous man.”
“I USED A FORK AND A KNIFE!”
“Are you sure? Because I distinctly remember dinner occurring differently.”
“I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS SLANDER!” Vasco tried to wriggle out of De Sardet’s arms, but the cage he was in was way too tight and he thrashed around before letting out a growl and settling back.
“Done?”
“Yes,” he grunted begrudgingly.
De Sardet grinned and leaned around, pecking around Vasco’s face until the Naut let out a laugh and shoved at him; the noble eased up and stared down at him with a smile. “I love you, Vasco.”
“I love you, my Tempest.”

HELLO Greedfall nation i bring you an absolute mess of headcanons that are kind of out of character but it's more about the possibilities. the potential.
vasco pretends that he doesn't care for kids, but he's always the first one in line to tell them about his adventures to impress them. he wants that clout so bad 😤
he also looks like the kind of guy who enjoys a nice hat? what kind of boat captain would he be if he didn't have a hat.
hat collector vasco who gets a new hat every time he's got a little personal victory… but also he has nowhere to store his hats. his tiny little cabin? all full of hats. send him help.
when siora finds out about his hat hobby, she sometimes gives him cool feathers to put in his hat!! and also to the hat wearers in the team, everyone gets cool feathers
when the gang is taking a little rest while there's still light in the sky, siora sometimes gives fun facts about the plant that surround them :)
kurt tries to do the same but instead of plant facts it's just stories about how his good army pal once tried to eat raw nettles. or how another good pal tried to wipe his ass with a leaf that looked exactly like that one over there. "kurt that's poison ivy" "oh. that explains why he wanted to die"
actually. kurt traumatises everyone with cursed army stories. they're not even about stuff he fought in, it's just stuff he witnessed among his fellow soldiers. "i knew a guy called 3-bean john. named that because on the 4th bean he ate he died of allergies" "kurt what"
ok this is diving more into DS territory (one that doesn't romance kurt) BUT HEAR ME OUT. constantin and DS clinging onto kurt when they're kids bc he's just sooo cool and sooo strong… he's their idol but also they don't like how he bosses them around even though that's literally his job? there's a fun little elder brother/younger siblings dynamic between them :)
which means that even when DS and constantin are older, they still do their best to be little shits around kurt. kurt looks at someone? "oooh kurt's got a little crush!" kurt tries to do something nice with his hair? "why do you have a bird's nest on your head. dumbass" kurt buys a new hat? "that is the ugliest thing we've ever seen. please pretend that you don't know us this is so embarrassing"
it annoys kurt but also he does the same in return. DS is flirting with someone on the team? "haha did you know that DS can't tie their shoelaces? do you really want to be seen kissing someone who doesn't know how to tie their shoelaces." (i have nothing against people who cant tie their shoelaces im just bad at coming up with stuff)
siora loves that dynamic between kurt and DS 😭kurt probably teaches her a thing or two on how to harmlessly clown on DS
wait going back to siora and plants. in my heart she teaches DS how to make little flower rings. bonus points if they're in a romance and DS goes "bro if you give me a ring that means we're married in my culture 😳" "bro😳"

Vasco: "I've been thinking about it though..."
De Sardet: "Oh? How so?"
Vasco: "If your uncle sent you someone with one of those contracts, I'd whisk you away and we'd go to sea. We'd run away together, we'd be free. And he couldn't do anything about it."
Oh my goddddd Vasco, you've got your heart on your sleeve 🥺😭
I didn't expect an extra little piece of conversation between De Sardet and Vasco, where Vasco asks about a fiancé that De Sardet's uncle could send over... and he really didn't like the sound of that
