funny to me how opal in dfz loves her stuff so much she cries at the thought of destantos’ goons breaking it, like she really cares about her stuff
it’s such stereotypical dragon behavior, the very kind of hoarding she chafes so bad with her dad about

I've been on Tumblr a little while now and I gather this is like, "the monsterfucker site"? I was pondering on this today, and realised I consider drow to be on the monstrous end but a regular elf wouldn't be, and I think of an ensouled "good" vampire (like Angel from BtvS) as a non-monster, but Spike would definitely be on the monstrous side.
Please reblog for sample size? This is entirely to fulfil my own curiosity. I expect most people will tap out at level 1 or 2, but who knows!
(edit - I'm still learning Tumblr; definitely meant to say "in notes" - mea culpa)

Hi I’m the guy who wrote the fluffy baby dragons post. Have you read the first book of the DFZ Changeling series?
Not yet! I just INHALED the Heartstriker series, like, 5 books in 3 days and I have neither slept enough nor paid a remotely responsible amount of attention to my day job that whole time. I’m excited to read the sequel series(s) at a somewhat calmer pace!

Nice Dragons Finish Last, book one of Heartstrikers, by Rachel Aaron. Audiobook narrated by Vikas Adam.
--
As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don't cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn't fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience. Now, sealed in his human form and banished to the DFZ--a vertical metropolis built on the ruins of Old Detroit--Julius has one month to prove he can be a ruthless dragon or kiss his true shape goodbye forever. But in a city of modern mages and vengeful spirits where dragons are considered monsters to be exterminated, he's going to need some serious help to survive this test. He only hopes humans are more trustworthy than dragons... (Nice Dragons Finish Last is an urban fantasy set 90 years in the future - featuring a kind protagonist, a kick-ass female mage, and more grumpy dragons than you can shake a stick at.) Winner of the 2015 Audie Audio Book Award in Fantasy! Start the series that won back-to-back RT Magazine Reviewers' Choice Awards!

Last Song: Whiskey on You by Nate Smith
Last Show: Andromeda. Watched s3e4 last night. it's a weird show; it's space battles, and the main character is all "oh we have to solve problems diplomatically to restore the light of civilization and rebuild the commonwealth of nations!" and then runs around blatantly murdering anyone who disagrees with him. Not a lot of attempts at peaceful resolution.
Currently Watching: is this...is this different from 'last show'? Because I don't generally watch a lot of stuff...I suppose I'm part way through s2 of Elementary, part way through s1 of an ATLA rewatch, and still have the second half of Die Hard to get through from Christmas
Currently Reading: books with bookmarks currently in them are Weird on the Outside by Shelley Stoehr, The Elements of Eloquence by Mark Forsyth, and Every Tool's a Hammer by Adam Savage. Yesterday, I started (and finished, but it's less than 300 pgs) Minimum Wage Magic by Rachel Aaron, and I intend to start the sequel to it (Part-Time Gods) either today or tomorrow, depending on how today goes. I also found my library card while typing this out and moving some stuff on my little table, so that's good! No need to keep manually typing in my account number!
Current Obsession: always and forever Artemis Fowl, but also atm the stuff set in the universe Rachel Aaron created for her Heartstriker and The DFZ series (where Minimum Wage Magic take place).
I think i'm gonna tag @fowlblue, @fowl-fox, @witherydithery, and @orangerosebush, plus anyone else who wants to do it

So the Heartstriker/DFZ books are my new favorite thing and I was disappointed in their lack of fandom. This is my attempt at Julius the Peacemaker/Dragon of Detroit but I reeeaaally struggle with drawing feathers so I’m not sure if this one will ever make it past the sketch stage unfortunately...
With the lack of color in this sketch, I also wanna note that I imagine all the Heartstrikers as having black scales with only their feathers being different colors. I realized that apparently most other artists who drew Julius don’t have the same opinion.
ALSO people who like this series, please interact 🥺 I’m so lonely

Having seen about two seconds of Peacemaker in the book and knowing the basic premis of the Heartstriker books had trippled my excitement to read them. I am fully perpared to be in love with him and his acedental world conquering. (Also the dragons of America are based on quetzalcoatl which means their all south american.) (Somebody who actually uses american legends for ameria.).

Re: Asian dragons - that makes one of the plot points in Rachel Aaron's DFZ series more satisfying in context. One of the main characters is the adopted human daughter of a Korean dragon, and due to him having shelled out for the best genes money can buy she has ridiculous levels of magical potential. She's called Opal, and referred to as her father's Precious Jewel (when he's being nice). Heartstrikers and DFZ are good myth/cyberpunk, a little dark at times but wholesome, would recommend! - Xan
Hi, Xan! Thank you for the recommendations ^^
At first glance The Heartstrikers Series will probably make me angry about bad parents, but Detroit Free Zone looks more up my alley! Even if it does turn out to be on the dark side for me "Minimum Wage Magic" is a _fantastic_ title for a first book.
I will take them into consideration for when/if I get my novel reading groove back :P
