Puppet Strings...
Not beta read
Yamato (Izanagi) x Reader
Summary:
You always feel his presences, and hear his voice, yet he never felt real. Until the Twilight came, you were bounded by the Order's puppet strings.
Tags: TW: Implied Stalking, Dark ending, Yamato is evil, ft Luo Yan, mind control.
"You can't hide from me~"
You felt his voice was spinning around you in total darkness. In a heart beat, you looked around trying to locate where his voice was coming from.
Yet, your futile efforts have earned a chuckle that escaped from his lips.
"... I see you~..."
You heard him say.
A faint sound of music began to play gradually getting louder. The tune felt eerie, so eerie, you couldn't help but to feel a goosebumps running along your spine.
You instinctively step backwards even though you know there is no horizon for you to escape in this space. Standing at nothing but a void of emptiness.
The music got even louder, the pitch and rhythm of the music box felt intrusive. Forcing it's way into your head, you covered your ears as your mind swirled. Aching at how the force was vibrating against your skull.
As you stumble back, in agony of the discomfort, you felt something, or someone, wrapped their arms around you. A hand snaking its way up to your thoart. Hitching your breath, you felt fear erupting from your core all the way to your chest. Freezing on the spot, just like an animal would when met with headlights.
A familar voice chuckled against your ear, "Found you~"
The grip on your thoart suddenly held tight.
Immediately you jolted.
Eyes snapped open, you got up from the sofa. Your breath still heaving from the fright of your dream.
You were having the same dream sequence again, only this time the stranger seems to be coming closer.
Your head turned left and right, looking to see where your were. You mind felt ease at the familar sight of the Esper Union Lounge. Currently empty, with the television still turned on.
"You're awake," a deep voice spoke.
Swallowing, you cleared your dry throat and looked up to see Luo Yan, a chief of the Scavengers, looking down at you.
"... Yes, sir," you answered. Your voice shook a little.
Readjusting your position, you stood up and went for the television remote. You can tell, it's getting late by how empty the headquarters were. Everyone would have clocked out by now. All, except for Luo Yan.
"Breaking News, another murder case has been report in Gyrate, amassing at total of..."
You turned off the television before the news anchor could finish her sentence.
"You should head back, it's getting late, and..." Luo Yan said with a rather stern voice, " I would hate for the incident last week repeat itself again."
You can tell the Chief was on edge lately. You couldn't help but to find the the incident just a blur. Your memories a week pior felt muddled and blank, and sometimes your head feels heavy. Yet, you think the Union members were acting a little too serious about it.
Admist the muddling in your memory, all that was remembered were you chasing after someone. Supposedly, stumbling upon a scene, you witnessed something you weren't supposed to. There was a flash of the colour red before having to wake up from the hospital bed.
What exactly happened, seeing how you lost that portion of the memory, the others spared you the details.
"Setting a curfew for me?" you questioned, simply out of curiousity.
However, Luo Yan wasn't in the mood for a light banter. "Go home",he said, "I am staying here for a while, I will wrap this place up."
Without another word, Luo Yan with his usual scowl on his face. He walked away and began to turn off the lights. While you stood on your spot, thinking to yourself. Maybe, you shouldn't have tried to joke around. Maybe that incident is serious.
"Goodbye, sir," you bid your farewell and headed out of the Esper Union Headquarters.
Walking your way through the busy streets, the late afternoon glow basked Gyrate with warmth. Yet, a sudden a chill ran down your spine. The air around you felt cold, there was a sense of uneasiness as you walked along the streets.
You weren't sure if there were a pair of eyes watching you from afar, or a million pairs of eyes watching you up close. This feeling was all too familar, and it stuck with you as you returned home.
The same fear from your dream began to resurface. The musicbox tune replays in your mind.
Tossing and turning, you lay awake in bed. Looking up at the ceiling, your gaze landed at clock on the bedside table. It was hours into the night, and you couldn't fall asleep.
The throbing sensation was vibrating against your skull. The faint sound of tingling made it worse. Sitting up, the tingling sound became apparent.
The tune of its metalic strumming lure your out of bed. You weren't sure if it was your imagination but it felt so real.
Reaching for the door of your room, you turned the knob and went into the living room, only to came face to face with a stranger...
Or more so...
Someone familiar...
He stood in front of your door and smiled at you, "... Found you.~"
It seems something has refreshen your memory. It all came flooding back.
It was like a nightmare replaying itself.
The man in red, whom, you met a week pior. He continued to look at you, anticipating you for a reply. Yet, your face was drained of colour. His sudden appearance amplified your fear, rendered you speechless. Instead of answering him, like he expected you to, you opened your mouth to scream.
The stranger's smile quickly disappeared and immediately grabbed onto you, covering your mouth before you could make a sound.
The box like object in his hand continued to play the music from your dream. Intruding into your head, the agony grew while the tune filled your mind. You tried to wiggle out of the strangers grasp, however, his grip only became tighter, and he looked at you with a sharp gaze.
"Don't fight it," he spoke, his voice sounded so sinister, "You know this by now. The pain will only get worse."
You weren't sure what he's taking about. Everything felt confusing, and you began to grow weak as the second went by, it wasn't long when your protest ceased.
Your mind went blank, eyes void of character. You stood still, like a puppet.
A chuckled escaped Yamato's lips. His sinster voice echo through the room, for he couldn't contain his exictment.
"Finally," he spoke, "The plan can finally set into motion..." He said to himself.
His hand went into his pocket, rummaging for a small trinklet before Yamato grabbed your hand gently. Opening up your fist to place a golden coin, minted in a familar symbol, you saw before; inside the files of Luo Yan's office.
"Let's see if you are a good puppet for me," Yamato said, "A new order is about to take seed in Gyrate~"
His words felt like a breeze. You paid no mind of what he said. The music from the box was still swirling in your head, as you waited for his command.
He closed your palm gently, incasing the minted coin in your hand.
"If that Scavanger haven't been so hot on my trail, I would have left you alone~" Yamato chimed, "you are just the puppet I need, to go through this task~"
He grabbed your chin, pulling your face closed to his. Examining your face, before his grip choked a respond from you, "... Yes, sir.
The grip on your face hurts, you squinted your eyes in pain, despite so, your mind was still in a thick haze, ready to take in his next request.
"That Scavanger Chief would still be in the Union headquarters at this hour. Why not go give him a "warm welcome" from the Twilight Order." Yamato grinned and let go of your hand.
"Kill him," Yamato's voice chanted in your mind.
Like a puppet, his orders were like strings attached to your limbs. Involuntarily moving, as you headed out seeking to do the puppeteer's bidding.

husband yamato headcanons bcs i love him and i'm very normal about him i swear
small warning for hinted posessiveness/controling behavior.
ʚ🫀ɞ the married life with yamato would be no exaggeration of having the perfect husband. even while having such a taxing occupation as running the twilight order (not to mention his other jobs), he fufills his duty of a doting, benevolent spouse with ease.
ʚ🫀ɞ gifting you sweet little offertories that tie to your intrests, showering you with endless affection and adoration as soon as he enters your shared home from working, even taking you out to various restaurants when he's feeling extra loving.
ʚ🫀ɞ but of course, he would much rather indulge in you within the walls of the humble home you both share. everything that he could ever need is there, and no prying eyes to discern his actions of affection.
ʚ🫀ɞ not that he would care if said acts of fondness for you were witnessed by strangers, he almost never leaves the house with you without his hand confining your waist or it being on the small of your back.
ʚ🫀ɞ his love languages? physical touch and acts of service without a doubt. it is almost impossible for yamato to keep his hands off of you.
ʚ🫀ɞ he touches each trace of your face, chin, hips, and thighs with care, a contently warm smile curls upon his lips as he admires every curve, scar, and mark on your body as if you were an irresitible fruit. to him, you were the epitomy of perfection.
ʚ🫀ɞ his acts of service is as equally as displayed as his physical affection. you want food? he'll cook your favorite meals. you want a specific something from a store? consider it already purchased. don't even mention the house chores, he does them before you even notice.
ʚ🫀ɞ now, with as lovely as yamato is, everyone has their pros and cons. yamato is no exception to that.
ʚ🫀ɞ for starters, it is no suprise that he is a posessive and controlling man. after he had been freed from his controlling adoptive father kokuzan after his death, yamato has never felt more than to be in need of power.
ʚ🫀ɞ everything that surrounds him shall be bound to his hand if he so desires. his organization, his younger sister; and you.
ʚ🫀ɞ according to his autonomy, he is only so controlling and posessive to keep you close, and to never allow you to slip through the cracks of having a illusory fling with anyone else. you are his spouse, after all. you two are dedicated to each other until death, just as your vows said.
ʚ🫀ɞ at times, the way you act unruly when it comes to this side of him tempts him to use that music box. despite his thin-threaded patience, he is reluctant to inflict its power on you. sure, he has done it once or twice to brusque your frustration, but the consequential uses of the box hits him beforehand.
ʚ🫀ɞ the last thing yamato ever wants to do is make you suffer, and to tear apart this marriage. he cannot afford to sacrifice the one thing he loves and cherishes because of his selfish, power hungry desire to keep you to himself and in his hands.
ʚ🫀ɞ yamato loves you dearly to the moon and back, and he would be willing to anything you ask of him to prove that fact. but you don't have to; you knew that from the moments you said 'yes' and 'I do'.

I finished a 4.2k fanfiction about freddy and Everett dislyte
It is definitely not beta read and I don't know if I have the energy to spell check or grammar check it
Also it might come off a bit ehh but also I was kind of trying to build up to a cool moment in one of the last scenes
Note to self I don't really think I'm cut out for Freddy writing so don't really expect more from me

A Small piece of writing between Sander and Yu Ran. To say I was grabbed by the collar by this character is an understatement, and I found a really cool little opportunity to get down some thoughts on Sander's characterisation and motivations onto the page.
A short, 2k word Political Thriller/Battle of Wits between Sander and Yu Ran, negotiating for the release of Freddy from Tangton custody.
Of Deer and Wolves
Sander was waved through by the imposing assistant and given leave to enter the office. He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts and remind himself of his strategy going into the meeting.
A Decree Agent had been detained by Tangton authorities, Sander himself had received the frantic call from Freddy’s squad mate and escalated immediately to Hyde. Normally, such a matter would be trivially resolved through whispers in carefully placed ears in Gyrate, but the Decree had no such connections in Tangton. Hyde had insisted that Sander attend to the matter in person, sending him on the first private transport bound for Tangton.
The normally unflappable Hyde had seemed tense briefing Sander before his trip, insinuating that he would have gone himself, but that Sander would be a more agreeable contact for the matter. He had apparently burned many favours to set up a meeting with a Tangton councilman, the highest possible authority to plead their case to. This was all very unusual, both the fear and the insinuation that Hyde would handle the matter personally. Regardless, the fragility and importance of the nature was stated again and again in no uncertain terms.
Steeling himself, Sander reached for the heavy wooden door and let himself in.
The office was resplendent, filled with immaculately kept Tangton native flora. A subtle bamboo motif stretched throughout the room from the woven floor coverings to long stalks diffused through frosted glass behind the ornate wooden desk. A gentle noon light poured into the room through the milky glass, giving every piece of ornate furniture soft shadows that made the entire room seem supernaturally lit with an invisible ambient light. However, the most beautiful thing in the room sat behind the desk.
Sander immediately realised what might have made him more attractive a diplomat, as he caught sight of an inescapably elegant Esper, transformed into a deer-like form.
Yu Ran sat with poise, a perpetually calming expression on his cervine visage, his long white hair falling over his shoulders like waterfalls, perfectly straight and silken smooth. His intricate glowing antlers were decorated modestly and yet richly with gold fixtures to match his white and purple suit. It was perfectly tailored with its tailcoat discarded to allow him to sit comfortably in his waistcoat, his black shirt ending in tightly fitted arm-length hand stockings and impeccably painted black claws.
Sander prepared to announce his entrance but didn’t need to as Yu Ran looked up at the closing door.
“Ah, Mr. Sander, I’ve been expecting you.”
“Hyde sends his regards and apologies, as his second in command I’ve been given the honour of meeting you” Sander replied, courteously.
“Such a shame. Cognac?” Yu Ran unstoppered a gleaming crystal decanter, splashing a small amount of amber liquid into a matching crystal glass.
“Not during business matters” Sander replied, almost immediately regretting it as the mature fruity notes reached his canine sense of smell. It was a VERY good bottle.
“Straight to the point I see, if only some of my peers were so efficient” Yu Ran mused, sifting through some of the many articles of paper on his desk.
“According to the report provided to me…” Yu Ran began, reaching for a thick stack of paper left in readily accessible range, gently lifting the first few pages to find a highlighted passage.
“…Your man stumbled across the border without any paperwork, tried to seduce a border agent, and then resisted with force before being detained.”
If Freddy got out of this in one piece, Sander was going to kill him.
Yu Ran flipped over to another page.
“And then I learn to my surprise that this isn’t an Esper Union Operation Chief making a clumsy mistake in a misguided act of heroism, but rather a wanted criminal, with charges ranging from public indecency to… kidnapping of children?”
“With all due respect…” Sander began, hating every word that came out of his own mouth defending Freddy “…He was later cleared of the kidnapping charges. It just probably hasn’t been reflected in the Esper Union records.”
“Oh, so the kidnapping was recent. Noted.” Yu Ran said, his tone holding neither sarcasm nor surprise. He let the substantial report fall closed in front of him.
“Needless to say, your friend has inadvertently caused a gigantic headache for two major governing entities and clearly at least a handful more organised syndicates, and while I would desperately like to see him removed from Tangton and never seen again, the other 6…pardon, 5 members of the council want to see him hauled into the Nether Gaol as an example, and no official entities in Gyrate are objecting.”
Despite Hyde’s warnings, Sander was suddenly feeling incredibly under briefed for the severity of the situation he found himself in, and yet very understanding of why he had been sent in person.
“Mr. Yu, I can assure you that the Shadow Decree is able to offer you substantial resources and assets in either an official or personal capacity for the safe transfer of this prisoner into our custody.”
Yu Ran clicked his pen, clearly thinking deeply about the proposition. Considering what to ask for, most likely.
“That won’t be necessary, at least I don’t believe it will be.” He said, gently. Sander tensed. It simply couldn’t be that easy.
“I think, instead, I’d like an answer of sorts.”
The deer was inscrutable and perfectly held. His gentle voice had never risen once throughout their conversation.
“Why are you here?” He asked Sander, pointedly.
The deer’s eyes were deep pools, staring right into Sander, fearless and inquisitive.
“For what it appears,” Sander responded stiffly “To entreat-”
“Nono, not about the wolf, I mean why are you HERE.”
Yu Ran reached for a different report, also neatly laid out for him.
“I must admit, when I learnt who the Decree were sending, I was intrigued. Ex-Navy, Ex-Esper Union, now Commander of a cabal of rogue agents, I must say it’s quite the career move for someone with your sense of duty, to be skulking around picking up the scraps of the Esper Union.”
There was a gentle creak of leather as Sander balled his hands into fists at his side. In that moment he realised why he in particular had been sent. He was a living gesture of deference on Hyde’s part, an inescapably visible Esper in one of the most Esper-hostile countries in Grandis. The deer in front of him knew it and was toying with him because of it. Sander hated it, the deference to authority. It was what had driven him from the Military and the Union all those years ago, and now it was expected of him here for this fragile Esper he had never met before in his life.
“The Union was holding me back.” Sander began, trying not to let an instinctual growl enter his tone “They refused to accept the power and responsibilities us Espers were gifted by the Miracles…”
“Please don’t lie to me, Mr. Sander. I’m a politician, I’m far better at it than you are.” Yu Ran retorted gently.
“I hate to disappoint you, but it’s the truth.” Sander replied, forcing a sense of certainty into his voice.
“Mhm.” Yu Ran pondered “And how is that going for you? Accomplished all those things the Union was keeping you from doing?”
The smallest of growls crept into Sander’s breathing. He summoned half a life of drills and procedure to force it down. He couldn’t let this fawn get the better of him. Despite it, his anger roiled deep inside him.
“And I’m sure your attempts to make Tangton safer for Espers has been wildly successful” Sander couldn’t help but release in retaliation. “I’m sure your council loves having a pampered obedient pet to offload their cruelty onto.”
The deer rose sharply from his chair, bringing himself up to full height with Sander. His eyeline was just below Sander’s but his towering antlers made his silhouette much taller. He walked slowly around the table, coming to stand just in front of the jackal. His lithe form was dwarfed in size by Sander’s wiry physique, but his silhouette was impossibly grown by his antlers and his status in the room. His eyes seemed infinite up close, a shining void that let no hint of anger or insult escape.
“You come into my office, from your self-imposed persecution in one of the most powerful Esper enclaves in the world and try to lecture me for not doing enough for people like us.” Yu Ran said, softly. His gentle tone was somehow more unnerving than if he had shouted. “I must admit it’s a bold negotiating strategy.”
Sander tightened his jaw, knowing better than to let his pride make this any worse.
“Tell me…” Yu Ran continued, inches from Sander “What did you have to lose for a belief you no longer hold? Do your spotless ideals keep you warm at night like he did?”
Sander couldn’t say anything. His mind had frozen, his heart stabbed clean through by the words.
“You gave up your power and everything that meant something to you for a misguided attempt at rebuilding it in your image. And look at where that got you. The lord commander of an organisation of cutthroats and misanthropes. Your principles and your theatrics cost you everything. So I ask again: Why are you here?”
“Don't you DARE insult my men you overgrown carrion”.
Sander’s fists were taught and trembling, every piece of finely honed discipline at his disposal keeping him from causing yet more of an international incident. Yu Ran tilted his head back. Instead of anger or shock, a small smile crept to the edges of his beautiful face.
'Ah. There it is. That's why.'
He moved back around and set elegantly back down at his desk. He clicked his pen and notated something on a notepad before tearing it off and folding it over.
“I’m afraid there’s simply nothing I can do to organise the release your friend.” Yu Ran began. Sander went to protest but was cut off with a raised hand.
“However, before you go, be sure to talk to my assistant about her current audit on structural faults in the precinct’s temporary holding cells. I’m sure a man of your experience would have great insight on areas that need reinforcement. The walls are practically crumbling! It's terribly unsafe for your agent to be held in such disrepaired quarters, I'm sure you'd agree.”
Sander took the folded note addressed to Yu Ran’s assistant, still emotionally raw but rapidly coming to terms with the game being played and the coded suggestion in Yu Ran's words.
“I’ve always hated the offices above those cells…” Yu Ran mused to himself “They’re an utter eyesore, no one wants to use them, and yet we never seem to have the budget to convert them to public space. Alas.”
He stood back up, moving around his desk and offered Sander a handshake. It was firm in an incredibly practiced way that wouldn’t have come naturally to the elegant figure.
“It’s been a pleasure, Mr Yu” Sander said, anger steadily seeping away to be replaced with a burning curiosity at the test he had clearly passed.
“No, Mr Sander” Yu Ran said with a smile that lit up his already stunning features “The pleasure was all mine.”

Sugar Crash
Prompt: "wtf Q" (this prompt was taken randomly)
Tags: slight mentions of drugs and addiction
Summary: Sugar, in moderation, can improve one's mood. Of course, anything in excess is bad.
I don't usually write, but content drought has pushed me to pick it up again.
_______________________________________________________
Life has its ups and down. When faced with comfort, there is no reason to worry about tomorrow. Live, laugh, love, they say. Everything becomes some sort of a game. Time tends to pass by so quickly when having fun… that sometimes it becomes too noticeable when things start crashing down.
“Everyone wants to be a critic these days! Nothing is enough for these people!”
When faced with hardships, people had to cope. There are different ways to deal with stress. Some sleep it off, others resort to vices, while some…. consume copious amounts of sugar.
“When I’m sad, I eat candies to make myself better! Or cake… mmm cake.”
Sugar can improve someone’s mood occasionally. There is nothing wrong with eating sweets once in a while. Of course, excess leads to ruin.
“What do you mean you splurged your money on sweets??”
“I’ve had a tough week, let me have this Brynn!”
“Q!!”
Relying on sugar to manage your emotions could cause adverse effects to the body. Like a drug, you get stuck in a loop that your brain and body wouldn’t want.
“Mr. Q, I do not advise too much sugary sweets...”
“It’s my cheat day today, old man! Leave me alone!”
“I’ll prepare you some tea then.”
Sugar as a stress-suppressant makes you overly-dependent on it. You pick it up once, and it was the most exceptional feeling ever. You pick it up a second time, and it wouldn’t be the same as the first one despite still feeling good. In hopes of feeling that same level of happiness again, you’ll keep consuming more sugar to satiate yourself in the short-term.
“Hey, you didn’t tell us you’ll be having cake!”
“Look David, there’s gum drops, chocolates, soda, and gummy worms too!”
“Hey hey! Don’t touch those without asking me!”
“Whoa hey, no need to be snappy…”
At a certain level, there will be a time where sugar can no longer make you happy. You would feel terrible, like you’ve hit rock bottom. But your body has become too reliant on sweets that it crashes along with your mood. Lack of control could lead to disastrous results.
“Goodness, Q, what is all this..?”
“I don’t feel so good…”
“Did you try consuming all of this into your tiny little body?”
Sugar must be consumed in moderation. Like any other coping mechanism, it’s not meant to make problems magically disappear.

“Tell me what’s wrong.”
“I just want to make people happy… but whatever I do, it’s not enough!”
“Calm down, don’t start throwing stuff now!”
Hardships are meant to be shared, and one man can never handle a burden alone. There is no shame in admitting you need help. Humans are not solitary species, after all.
“Ashley, I’m sorry..”
“I can sense that you are having a tough day.”
“My body really feels terrible right now… I can’t move my legs.. urk..”
“No more eating sweets for you for a week or two… Don’t worry, I’ll carry you to the infirmary.”
You may not feel good today, nor even tomorrow. But nothing stays down forever.
_______________________________________________________
Sorry for the chaotic writing, but I need to drag you all into total chaos in the most effective way possible. :D

MHA headcannons for a Esper! S/O
I just realized that nobody was written about Esper! Reader in MHA. Sooooooo Imma be the first (I think)!
The inspo comes from the game Dislyte, the one game that I can't stop playing.
Hi, hello and here are some my hero headcannons on how I think the characters would react to the reader being an Esper. The headcannons will be separate posts cause I have to figure out a lot.
⋆⋅✧⋅⋆⋅✧⋅⋆⋅✧⋅⋆
Character(s): Dabi
In this fic: Fluff
Reader: Gender neutral
⋆⋅✧⋅⋆⋅✧⋅⋆⋅✧⋅⋆
Dabi
"First off, the hell's an Esper?"
I mean, at least he was calm about it?
You're just looking at him in shock but then realized that he probably doesn't believe you.
You basically sit him down and tell him what an Esper is, what they do and more.
"So you basically got a decent quirk? Ok doll."
You roll your eyes and stand up.
Man's looking at you confused and unimpressed so what do you do?
You drag him out of the base and head to sections of the city that were cut off due to 'monsters'
"Why are we here?"
"You'll see."
Dabi looked at you confused until he heard an explosion and the rumbling of the ground. A glowing purple figure rose from the ground. An voice boomed "Flowerunner".
The figure was almost resembling a person however the being glitched once in a while. The flow symbol on it's chest with two circular rings spinning around the central body as two smaller rings and one singular triangle protected the face. A single ring spun around the neck of the glitching being. Four arms on the being moved in a gentle flowing motion.
"The hell is that?"
"A Flowerunner."
"The fuck's a Flowerunner?!"
"That." You pointed to the being in front of the both of you. "Time to get this over with."
Taking a step forward, (Name) revealed their Esper form as their power and weapons came through. Cue Dabi's confused yet awe look.
"What the FUCK?!"
You turn to Dabi and see his face in shock with a faint blush on his face.
"I- what- HOW?!" Dabi stood there, slack jaw as he stares at his s/o. You simply cross your arms and blast the Flowerunner. Luckily the Flowerunner had low energy and the being collapsed into the ground.
"The battle is over and done."
Dabi just stood still as he waited for you. You go next to him, still in your Esper form. The two of you leave and head back, wanting nothing more than just some quality time together, a chance for Dabi to learn more about Espers and some good food.
⋆⋅✧⋅⋆⋅✧⋅⋆⋅✧⋅⋆
I think it did good with this headcannon. Keyword is think but I love how it turned out.

Starting Small...
Li Ling (Nezha) x Reader
Summary:
Li Ling is used to always winning, be it in sparring matches, or videos games in the arcade. Yet, when it comes to you, he's at a lost. How can he ever win the attention of someone like you?
Tags: Canon Divergent, pre Yun Chuan timeline, unrequited (Li Ling), slight Kuudere! Reader, song inspired fic
══════════════════
"Just watch, [Y/n]. One day you will pay attention to me!" he growled.
*****
It was early in the morning.
The Esper Union’s headquarters was quiet, as the first sunlight emerged from the crack of dawn.
The hinges of the door turned, a small rusty squeak ruined the tranquillity of the early hours. You and Li Ling entered the lounge, tired and somewhat dishevelled.
The large Esper, Li Ling, immediately flops down on one of the couches, while you went to the bar area in search for an ice pack, tending to the bruise that began to show on your wrist.
On the couch, Li Ling was gazing at the clock on the wall spacing out a little from the lack of sleep.  Listening to the ticking sound of the clock’s hands, he counted the minutes remaining until he needs to clock in for duty.
"You know, you could give me a thanks for saving you back there," he piped up, a smirk followed inevitably, as he turned his head to look at you. However, you didn’t care to entertain him.
"I thought I already did," you simply replied, refering to the incident last night. Yawning, you took the first aid box from the cupboard. A hiss escaped your lips when you apply the disinfectant on your wounds from a fall that you took.
A frown appeared on his face when he heard your dismissive answer. Li Ling pouted his lips, and returned his gaze to the clock. His brows furrowed slightly, feeling a little frustrated.
There was a moment of silence between you two. The unsettling feeling in Nezha's chest made him enquire, "Are you going to see that Bounty Hunter again?"
He asked without looking at you. His voice was low and half-hearted.
You stopped what you were doing. A little perplexed by the shift of his tone. He, somehow, sounded a little upset.
"Yes, I am." you simply replied.
Li Ling remained quiet as you continued to patch yourself up.
"I'll be heading back home now," you said, and walked over to the Esper. Li Ling was spacing out you waved in front of him to get his attention.
The motion snapped Li Ling out of his thoughts, "Oh, okay," he spoke as he watched you heading towards the door. He was annoyed, and that feeling sat on his chest. This was not post-rescue scene he had imagined it to be. If only you could stop being so uptight about getting that intel from the bounty hunter, he wouldn't have wasted a night's sleep just to follow you, and save you when things went south.
It was the most anti-climactic victory he ever had.
Unsatisfied, he quietly clicked his tongue. "Hey," Li Ling called out to you.
You are just about to push the door open when you hear him, you stop and turned to him.
"When and where are you going for that 'date' with that Bounty hunter?" he asked.
You gave him a questioning look comprehending what he just said. You rolled your eyes at what he was implying.
"Tagging along like last night?" you asked sarcastically.
Li Ling gave a smug toothy grin, his sclera turned back to into white. "Wouldn't want what happened last night to repeat itself, right?"
"It's not a 'date'," you quickly corrected him, "I am just looking into something."
However, Li Ling held a sceptical look. He had noticed you got friendly with that Bounty hunter, maybe too friendly for his taste.
You only shook your head and headed out. Leaving the Esper alone in the lounge, with a feeling of unsatisfactory lingering in his chest.
Soon after, the topic of the bounty hunter ceased for a while between you and Li Ling. He tried to bring it up once, but you return a silent response to his question. Denying him the attention he wanted from you.
As time went on, your attention began to drift away from Li Ling. Too busy, with your intel gathering to even look at him anymore. Li Ling started to become a little more aggressive in his approach to get your attention.
He tried to show off his flaming hot wheels, yet, you were looking at your phone.
He scored the highest score at the arcade, yet, you were looking around the arcade and chatting with Mona.
He even tried to show you videos of his victorious sparring matches, yet, you were disinterested.
"Ack!" Bardon cried.
A smirk plaster on Li Ling's face, he had won the round of arm wrestling. Bardon let go and fixed his robotic arm. "I don't think anyone can beat your arms in any round," he commented.
Grinning wider, Li Ling scoffed, "They always say, I am the strongest of Tangton for good reason."
Lewis shook his head and replied, "It's only your Esper arms that are strong, but let's see if you could win against me?" he challenged with a smile.
"While you guys are at it, please don't break the table," Tang Xuan butted in," I don't want to pay for something I didn't break."
"You're on!" Li Ling said.
On cue, the door of the lounge opened. You walked in. You noticed the boys were at their usual spot doing their own thing, and you simply headed to the bar area.
Seeing you entering the lounge, Li Ling immediately switched his tact. He removed his Esper arm from the table, instead, he placed his arm on it.
"Oh? Changing your mind?" Bardon said.
"I reckon I should play fair," Li Ling replied.
"Ha, since when do you play fair," Lewis laughed.
Arranging their arms and hands, Tang Xuan prepared both parties, "On your marks... Get set..."
Immediately, Xuan releases the hands. Both Espers began their battle.
You were by the fridge looking through the items inside. Completely unaware of how Li Ling's face was scrunched up; making the extra effort to give Lewis a swift defeat.
As seconds went by the tension grew, both Li Ling and Lewis were at their wit's end, trying to bring each other down, but their strength was equal drawing an inconclusion of who was going to win.
You had found what you wanted and swiftly grabbed it off the fridge. Closing the door, you turned to head back out of the lounge. Taking a glance, you saw how the arm wrestling was turning out, but quickly ignored it, for you were never interested in such endeavours.
He can see how you were not paying attention to him. Li Ling gritted his teeth, and with all his strength he pushed Lewis's hand down.
Slam!
The sound from the impact made you jump, dropping the pudding off your hands. The cup fell, messing up the carpeted floor of the lounge.
You cursed and rushed back to the bar to gather paper towels. Li Ling stood up, showing he came out victorious.
His eyes travelled around the room, trying to find you, to see your reaction. However much to his dismay, you were busy picking up the mess on the ground with Bardon; who was kind enough to offer help.
"Hey," Li Ling called for you. Your head went up and gave him, rather, a cold look.
"Did you see that?" he asked, all proud.
"See what? ," You gave him a confused look before returning to the mess.
"What! You didn't see any of that?!" Li Ling exclaimed.
Dragging your head back up you said, "No, I didn't. Why don't you be useful for once and help with cleaning the carpet?" you sighed with annoyance.
Turning to Bardon, with a smile, you thanked him.
"No worries," he replied, "I am glad that I could help."
The look on Li Ling's face was not a pleasant one. He kicked the chair.
"Oi, calm down!" Tang Xuan said, "What's the matter with you?!"
Li Ling clicked his tongue turned to a corner and sulked. Lewis and Tang Xuan could only look at each other, confused at Nezha's sudden behaviour.
You, on the other hand, can see him sulk by the corner. Feeling a little guilty over how you spoke to him.
Remaining quiet, you finished cleaning the floor and went over to the bar to wash your hands. By then Tang Xuan, Lewis and Bardon bid you a goodbye before leaving for their retrospective task. Leaving you alone with Li Ling, who was still sulking by himself.
Letting out a sigh, you decided to approach the Esper and called for him.
"Hey, what's wrong?" you asked.
He turned his head slightly towards you, but the pout was still evitable on his face. Like a child, he turned his cheek the other way.
"Li Ling," you called out his name, this time your patience was running a little thin.
Hearing you call his name he finally turned to look back at you. "What?" he asked.
"What's the matter?" you crossed your arms, "you have been acting brash lately."
"... Why can't you get it through that thick skull of yours?" he said bluntly, "isn't it obvious?"
You let out a defeated sigh. You contemplated for a moment, thinking back at the times Li Ling was acting brash in front of you. It started right after that night with the bounty hunter.
"You are just trying to get under my skin," you replied.
"Is this what you think I am doing! ?" Li Ling said, still frowning.
"What else? You were acting so insufferable in front of me," you stated.
Furrowing his brows, Li Ling spoke up, "That's because you won't pay attention to me!"
Eyeing the Esper with a sceptical gaze, you have no idea what he wanted, and only questioned, "Why should I?"
"Because," Li Ling began, "I am the best. I have a lot of victories under my belt. This proves that I am the strongest, so you have to respond to that, no?"
You remained silent, while he continued with his confession, "I am doing this to win your attention! What must I do to get it? And, I am not going to lose to our bet! " gritting his teeth, Nezha crossed his arms, and let out a huff.
Ah, yes, the bet.
Standing in silence, you weren't too happy with his outburst. You know that Li Ling always has a rather childish tantrum when things don't necessarily work out.
Although, at times, the intent behind such behaviour was an understandable one, a gesture to show he cares about his close friends, and you, deeply, yet, as of late, it became nothing but a source of headache to deal with.
"Well obviously, being all about power and muscles isn't going to work," you spoke in a rather calm tone, for you don't want to trigger Li Ling any further.
"Why don't you start with something small?" you said and crossed your arms. You only say this just to get him off your back, and to stop the boastful acts he has been doing around you.
"Like what?" he asked, genuinely curious.
Shrugging, you walked towards the door, opening it before stopping, "That's for you to figure out."
Suddenly your phone vibrated, you realised the Bounty hunter had sent you the address to meet up, a promise to relay the intel in exchange for a certain price. Without a word, you replied to the text.
Li Ling only looked at you with a sour gaze, "The bounty hunter?" he asked.
You quickly place your phone back in your pocket. Looking at the Esper, your head shook. Telling him to not question any further.
"It's the 'date', isn't it?" he asked once more.
"It's not a date," you sighed, and left the lounge.
***
You weren't sure what to expect when the bounty hunter asked you to meet him in front of a fancy restaurant. However, you weren't expecting yourself to be waiting for an hour and a half on the street.
The sky turned dark by then, and the air grew a little cold from the time of the year. Rubbing your hands together, you asked yourself when the Bounty Hunter was ever going to show up.
"Excuse me," the waiter by the door asked, "Are you going dining in with us?" clearly a little fed up with you standing by the entrance.
"oh no, I am just here waiting," you piped up, "My 'friend' is coming."
"I doubt that," a familiar voice spoke behind you.
Turning around you saw Li Ling with this signature smirk.
"What are you doing here?" you asked, a little annoyed.
"Just tagging along~" the Esper chimed.
"Listen, I am not going to pay for your meal once we get in," you huffed.
"I know," he replied, "Because we're not eating in that fancy place anyway."
You remained quiet. Ignoring Li Ling as he continued to grin like a go-lucky kid. Hoping, he would get bored by the lack of your attention and walk away.
Despite so, Li Ling grabbed you by the arm and began dragging you across the street.
"Hey!" you yanked your arm away, "What's your problem?!"
"You are waiting for that Bounty hunter, right?" he said, "you know, he's never going to show up."
Your expression turned into a surprise.
"I looked into him a while ago, and someone like him is obviously a crook. He doesn't have the intel. You're just wasting your time, [Y/N]."
He showed you a report file on the bounty hunter on his phone.
Your perplexed expression soon turned into a frown, clicking your tongue, you cursed under your breath, "That bastard..."
You had been scammed, and couldn't help but to feel played. An angry scoff left your lips.
"I should have known something was off about him when he asked for a deposit!" you stomped your feet.
Li Ling chucked at you, "Well, ya' got to be careful next time. If you aren't sure about the people you meet then, you can always come find me. I'll help you out."
"Come on, I know a good place we could eat!" he added.
You looked a him smirking a you. Your stomach growled telling you that you were indeed feeling hungry.
"Fine..." you said and followed Li Ling.
He took you to a food truck place and ordered two portions of food, while you ordered one.
As you both sat and ate your meals, you noticed Li Ling was looking at you, feeling all giddy as he ate his burger.
Wiping the sauce from the corner of your lips, you took a glance to see the Esper smiling.
"What?", you said.
"Nothing," he shrugged while smiling, "just feelin' good."
"Huh...", you said.
You both ate in silence, and for once, you seem to enjoy Li Ling's company. Food always taste better with people around.
"... Thanks, by the way..." you said, "If you didn't come to fetch me, I probably still be left in the dark by that bounty hunter."
"Hey, no worries. Just got to do what is right, you know?" Li Ling replied, and he smirked. He kept looking at you as you ate.
You couldn't help but let out a little smile, "Why are you...doing this...", you asked,"...for me?"
You meant to say, he didn't have to accompany you and treat you for a food truck dinner.
"Well...you got to start with something small..." He chuckled.
His words came with a bit of surprise for you.
It was rare for Li Ling to act rather gentle with others, especially with you. He was a 'go full out, or go home' type of guy. Yet, the Esper was being subtle. In all honesty, he wasn't all that bad to hang around.
You let out a chuckle, rolling your eyes at him and shook your head.
"Hey [Y/N], pinch me would ya'?" he said.
You furrowed your eyebrows, confused by Li Ling's request. Nevertheless, your arm reached out and gave his shoulder a little pinch.
"What is that all about?" you asked.
"Oh, nothing..." Li Ling shrugged," just want to make sure I am not dreaming~". He let out a toothy grin.
*****
"In your wildest dreams," you scoffed.

Author's notes:
Li Ling will forever be my baby girl UwU.... But all jokes aside, this fic is a long time coming. I promised that I would edit it, but life in general is just kicking me hard and by the time I get to the fic, I am too tried.
Anyway, this is one of the very first fic I wrote when I started playing Distlye. Not sure has Li Ling's characterisation changed from the countless of in-game retcons, but nevertheless, I enjoy writing his character.

a/n: (how adhd of me to forget the part abt his adhd) HI ANON!! ID LOVE TO TY FOR THE REQ <333
* Born as 'Tang Mei'
* Started asking people to call him 'Tang Xuan' and use he/him when he turned 6.
* Had a rough childhood, since everyone was used to 'Tang Mei and her twin brother, Tang Yun'.
* The twins' parents were extremely transphobic and took away everything Tang Xuan held dear. This is why they are no longer in contact.
* The separation from his parents made him cling to his little brother even more, explaining why he is so desperate to fix their relationship.
* When they were on speaking terms, Yun was his number-one supporter in his transition.
* He doesn't need to wear a binder, but sometimes it's just assuring to have one one!
* Xuan is fine with his body parts, he doesn't want any surgery. It just feels wrong to be referred to as anything other than a man.
* He naturally has a deep voice.
* Every Christmas, Yun sends him some sort of gender affirming gift.
* Xuan is dating Li Ling who is also FTM but on hormones and has had surgery.

With a Heavy Heart - Chapter 2
<- Previous Chapter | Next Chapter ->
Summary:
After a disasterous mission, Raven demotes Li Ling from his rank as Operations Chief. He is placed under the tutelage of Drew, who is tasked with his re-training and assessing when, or if, he is able to earn his title back.
In his brash attempts to regain his lost position and pride, Li Ling stumbles into long-buried pasts, and comes to realise the terrifying depth to his unassuming teacher and the house he served.
CW:
Contains themes of emotional hurt, grief and loss, with mention of canonical character death, and use of organised crime-adjacent tropes.
Chapter 2
Li Ling stepped sideways to get through the small door to the old gym, an instinct from his usually imposing silhouette. He caught himself and squared himself up before crossing the threshold. Damnit. He absentmindedly clawed at the slim cuff on his left arm, trying to work his fingers underneath where it opened at his forearm. He fidgeted on his entire approach to the lone figure of a Jackal at the opposite edge of the room.
Drew was carefully setting out water bottles on an old trestle table, standing them up alongside an expertly curated collection of electrolyte powders. His silhouette was rigid, his motions restrained to the bare minimum required for his task. His pristine appearance was made dingy when lit solely by the cheap Fluro of the room’s blinking overheads. The room was deathly still, not even a wayward fly causing movement to grab onto. Compared to the Union halls Li Ling had just come from, the entire scene was painfully, achingly ordinary.
An ear flicked at Li Ling’s heavy footfalls.
“Ah! Master Li Ling, thank you for joining me.” Drew began. “As you were no doubt made aware, I will be your tutor for your retraining. I do apologise for the poor state of our training arrangements, unfortunately the usual Union training grounds are not built with such a… mundane standard of safety in mind.”
Li Ling took this opportunity to take in the surroundings. Calling it in a poor state was euphemistic at best. The gym was small and stuffy, with raw brick walls half-heartedly covered with sagging crash mats. One wall was dedicated to a grimy floor to ceiling mirror, attached to the wall in several panes with seams every few meters. Li Ling couldn’t escape his own reflection, diminished substantially without his arms. He took a moment to square up his shoulders and push back the slouch that had crept in, desperately trying to close the few centimetres in height between him and Drew. Jigsaw mats roughly colour matched into two sparring rings lined the floor.
It was patronising to even stand in.
“For the foreseeable future your afternoons will be spent here” Drew continued, “I have been asked to take you through combat and sparring basics, with an emphasis on controlled martial arts and meditation. Our course will consist of several forms, including Yoga, Tai Chi, Tae Kwon do…
“Look Drew…” Li Ling interrupted, crossing his only arms, “I don’t know what kids TV lesson Raven’s cooked up with you, but we can skip it. I’m sorry, ok? I’ve learnt my lesson, I won’t do it again, write it in the rulebook and throw it at me. I don’t need any of this crap, and the longer I spend in THIS thing…” He yanked helplessly at the cuff “… the less time Miramon spend dying, which no one wants. So, if you would just get me OUT of this THING.” He threw his arms down by his side. The cuff rather inconsiderately stayed fastened to his forearm.
Drew raised an eyebrow.
“Well, that’s excellent to hear, Master Li Ling.” Drew replied. His tone was perfectly pleasant, but Li Ling couldn’t hear anything but sarcasm drip from the words. “I shall report it to Raven at once. However, before I do so, may I trouble you for a demonstration?”
A demonstration? What was this dog on about? Drew carefully slid his tailcoat off his shoulders, revealing a crisp white dress shirt underneath, his normal bandage wraps carefully rolled into neat cylinders on the table already.
“Fine. Whatever you want.” Li Ling threw back through clenched jaw. “Want me to write a sappy letter? Record a teary apology video and post it to SwiftSpace? Wear a sandwich board with ‘I fucked up’ written on it?”
“None of that will be necessary” Drew responded, not rising to the venom in Li Ling’s voice. “If you do not believe my training is required, I simply wish you to show me.”
Satisfied his coat was out of danger of the water and powders, Drew turned to Li Ling and widened his stance slightly, his black leather shoes sinking into the foam as he lowered his centre of mass, his cane in his hand with its tip held unwavering off the ground.
Li Ling guffawed.
“What, FIGHT you?”
The contrast between the two couldn’t be starker. Li Ling stood shirtless, in flowing and unrestrictive fighting gear. His physique was lean and powerful, with deep lines cut into it from a lifetime of operating at a superhuman level of strength and finesse. Drew, on the other hand, was dressed for a high tea. He hadn’t so much as undone his top button, let alone prepared himself for a fight. Only his canine appearance betrayed any nonhuman ability whatsoever.
“A simple spar” Drew clarified. “If you can land a hit on me, I will go to Raven immediately and relay what you have told me and recommend the immediate reinstatement of your field duties…”
A smile crept onto Li Ling’s face. This was perfect, even without his Esper abilities Drew was literally fighting on Li Ling’s terms.
“…However,” Drew continued “If I can knock you off your feet, our training will continue as planned. Do we have an agreement?”
“Yeah, Whatever.” Li Ling replied gleefully, trying to hide his confidence.
“In that case…” Drew said, his grip on his cane tightening and his stance deepening, “Proceed.”
Li Ling didn’t need to be told twice. He lunged forward with astonishing speed, pulling his fist back for a punch that he hoped would end this charade as soon as it started. Drew hadn’t so much as flinched. He held statue still as the punch raced towards him. Li Ling’s fist flew forward, expecting to find contact with furred jaw. It found nothing but air. Drew had effortlessly sidestepped the lunge, gently tapping the bronze tip of his cane into Li Ling’s back as he sailed inelegantly past.
Li Ling yelped and caught himself, shifting his feet to catch his wild momentum. The tap of the metal cane had been calculated not to damage, but to sting like hell on his bare skin and intensely irritate him. It was working. Li Ling stretched his neck side to side, recentering himself. Drew was standing perfectly upright, his heels touched together and his arms behind his back, cane included. Li Ling surged again, throwing fist after fist at the Jackal, but kept on landing on the empty space the Jackal used to be in. Drew weaved easily around Li Ling’s speed, not even so much ducking, and each time he followed up with another one of those stinging, infuriating taps.
Li Ling roared, he wasn’t holding back his punches for sparring purposes anymore, he was throwing wild, powerful attacks trying desperately to wipe the placid, calm look off that smug canine face. His blows were heavy, and his speed was taking a toll to match. His attempted hits were becoming more and more sluggish as his back stung. One sloppy punch was all it took. Instead of smoothly weaving to the side again, Drew simply dropped his head, allowing the fist to fly into the space where he had been a moment ago. He grabbed Li Ling’s wrist, effortlessly redirecting the momentum to continue forward as he pulled on Li Ling’s arm, adding a substantial amount of force that Li Ling hadn’t anticipated. It was all it took to send Li Ling spiralling off balance and crashing to the floor.
He breathed heavily, sprawled on his back, utterly despondent. Drew hadn’t even darkened his white shirt. A black furred hand was held in front of him, an offering of sportsmanship. Li Ling didn’t take it and scrambled to his feet on his own.
“I believe that’s settled then” Drew said, cheerfully.
“Yeah yeah.” Li Ling growled, letting his anger smoulder in the words. “Real fair fight, Esper against effectively a normal human. If it weren’t for…”
Drew wasn’t listening to him, instead he was turning back towards the trestle table. He unbuttoned one of his sleeves and quickly rolled it up, paying no mind to Li Ling. He pulled a small key-like device from the pocket of his tailcoat and ran it along the slim, metal cuff he revealed underneath his sleeve, a perfect match to the one on Li Ling’s arm. With a click it opened and drew placed it gently on the table. As the cuff left his arm, Drew’s body alighted with energy, plumes of otherworldly black smoke pouring from every opening to his clothing and from a tiny crack at the top of his cane. Drew’s silhouette roiled as the smoke seamlessly ebbed and flowed from his black fur, before calming down into its usual subtle turbulence. Drew’s power returned in force, an illusory violet butterfly coming to rest on his shoulder and casting a gentle purple light into the room as he turned back to face his ward, who could do nothing but stand with his mouth agape.
“We shall be starting today with some meditation exercises…” Drew said, launching into his session as though nothing at all had happened.
The dojo underneath House Ramses was crowded with aspirants. Every Esper in the room had endured gruelling trials to stand where they were, seeing Lateef Ramses in the flesh for the first time. He sat stoically as he gave them their final trial. A simple task, a deceptively simple one, one that he assured them would separate the one here who would be welcomed into the family; Defeat the family butler in one-on-one combat, no holds barred, all powers permitted. The first challenger raced at the opportunity and was dispatched just as quickly. The others weren’t so eager after that. Esper after Esper fell and was dismissed, and as the butler discarded more of his bloody, sweat-laden and elementally damaged garb between fights, it became ever more apparent that he wasn’t just a simple master of the house. Espers either fled or were carried grappling with injuries. Finally, one candidate remained to test his mettle; a young man barely in his twenties with the head of a Jackal and a wicked rapier that burned with black and purple fire.
