Darksiders is a DMC/LoZ hybrid, that takes the best of both games, and runs with it. It also learned that your default sword is the most useful one in the game, and instead had you change between alternate weapons. It integrated all of the different Styles from DMC into a simple and concise interface.

Soulstice takes the best of the various DMC games, and throws in Dark Souls for flavour. They even copy the alternate weapon system from Darksiders.

Devil May Cry 3's greatest weakness is the localization. For whatever reason, they decided that North America wants harder games. So, they made Hard mode the North American Normal Mode. They then rereleased it, fixing this problem and adding Vergil. Assholes. They couldn't just give us DLC. The second biggest problem with DMC3 is that they made the Styles mutually exclusive. While this added replayability to the game, subsequent games decided to force you to switch between styles to get the benefits. While I could beat Normal!Hard, and Hard!Must Die difficulty, but the new Dante Must Die difficulty was insane. This also locked me out of Heaven and Hell mode.

Darksiders 2 is not quite as good as Darksiders, but is different enough to make it well worth the play through. It's biggest problem is Alternate Revenue models. Death uses a pair of sickles that combine into a large scythe in a very unique way. You find a new pair of scythes every couple of minutes, and inventory management really drags the game down. Still a fantastic game though.

Devil May Cry 5 was a savings throw for the series, after the terrible 4 and DMC. They did a good job of ending the series, and tying everything together, but the fixed characters per level, and limited weapons for Dante dramatically lower the replayability.

Devil May Cry 1, the accident that spawned a phenomenon and changed the face of action games for ever.

Notes: Devil May Cry 4 is a terrible DMC game, but does add some wonderful elements to the world, and is worth playing through once. TL;DR the Nero sections are terrible. The Dante sections are dulled by the lack of good weapons, (and lack of weapons in general), and the fact you have to constantly change styles in combat. A trait that would go on to taint DMC5 as well.

There are also a couple of games that need not even be mentioned.

I can understand the leap from Dante to Heisenberg, but I still haven't quite figure how you went from Prim and Proper Ignis... to Hobo Dirty Man Dante.

......I’ve actually thought about this a lot….. Aaaand I may have had some small personality crises over it lol, but really I think it’s just from me getting older and wiser. 

I was 22 when ffxv came out, and I was struggling at the time with my job and just life in general. Ignis is my irl type, and honestly I was just absolutely floored by this sexy, sexy man that seemed to have all of this shit in order. That’s what I was looking for in a ‘fictional’ partner at the time, and then of course I just had endless fic ideas that I wanted to explore.

For some context I was about 14 when I played DMC3 for the first time, and I thought that Dante was hot as fuck. I also played DMC4 when I was probably about 16/17, but I wasn’t really into him then. He was too old and too muscly for me. 

Anyway though I hadn’t really been following DMC5 because I knew that I was going to play it eventually, but didn’t really care that much about it. One day I had this huge craving for fics about Ravus (so embarrassing 😂), read everything on Ao3 and then decided to move on to other white haired men lol.

Reading DMC fic as an adult with kinks is a completely different experience from reading ff.net Dante x Lady fics as a teenager lol. Being with Dante opens up this whole world of dark indulgences, and I knew without a doubt that I was into that stuff at the time. So anyway, after reading through a few fics I figured I better look up his appearance in 5 for reference, and my god I was shooooook. 

That was definitely a point where I could no longer deny that my fictional type was moving from the typical ‘bishie’ protag to tired and jaded old men. But, then again, are they really old men? Adam Cowie was born in 1988 (according to a quick google), and I honestly don’t class that as ‘old’. 

Also, I am just going to sit here and plead insanity, they keep casting these gorgeous models as face refs for these dirty hobos, how the fuck are we supposed to resist?

Well, I gotta say. This combination of mods to DMC 5 was interesting, although I had to bear with the computer causing slowdowns that made timing Royal Guard and dodging worse.

It was like a spectrum of character mods: The Gura mod just replaces the model with no facial movements, the Crimson Weave mod has some facial tracking but is difficult to judge since Vergil already had very little facial movement in most cases, and the Squall mod which was above and beyond VERY well-done and matched everything (although his face and right arm disappear in DT mode in cutscenes and gameplay).

Either way, I'll reiterate that I don't like how DMC 5 is very linear in design, with more focus on action set pieces than the usual exploration stuff. While it's fun to play, and it gives Nero some much-needed boom, it's nowhere near the amount he deserves. I'm really hoping a new game focuses solely on Nero and doesn't keep going for the character swap gimmick which is frustrating to deal with.

Anyways, enough prattling. Here are the best screenshots I got of this run. Now to uninstall the game to make room for something new because god damn this computer sucks at running anything remotely fun.

Fic scenario that popped in my head:

set post twins return from Hell

Patty comes to Devil May Cry and starts screaming (Dante's locked into a hug, he mustn't escape this conversation) about how worried she was and when Dante tries to joke around, she makes him face the fact that he is her chosen father figure and storms out.

Dante has not yet abandoned his ingrained habit of closing himself off to his loved ones, starts shaking and forces his 'everything's fine' smiles.

Vergil, who has heard the entire ordeal, is stunned. He is trying to create a connection with Nero, and his value of relationships is currently based only on their blood relation, and there is Dante who had such an effect on a life of this girl that he Earned himself the title of fatherhood. Vergil confronts (more like comforts) Dante about this, they talk about responsibilities. Vergil tells Dante that he can either own up to his actions towards Patty, and the value she places in him, or that he should stop being cruel towards her.... and himself.

*p.s. I aggressively agree with each and every author who makes Dante give Patty the nickname 'Patty-cakes'

Some things that made me dislike Freelancer Saga so much is it's obsession with making Freelancer looks Cool TM. We're explicitly shown and told that Tex is #1, Carolina is second best, and that Washington is "the rookie". And while I, as a viewer, have absolutely no questions why Tex is the top of the leaderboard, I have A Lot of questions why Wash is the least skilled of all. But I don't really wanna dig into him here, we can assume that Wash trained harder and became much better after being designated as Recovery agent (which is, kinda still hard to believe because how would a freshly traumatised agent train to be Better than he was before said trauma and in highly competitive environment, but let's Assume he became better)

Tex being #1 on the leaderboard is very easy to explain - even before the big reveals of the plot, during Blood Gulch chronicles we see Tex: having mechanic skills, using a sniper rifle, being an infiltration and explosives expert, and good hand-to-hand combat skills. She's good at all of these, which gives her a range of tools which she can utilize to get tactical advantage in pretty much any situation. All the while, she doesn't become a Mary Sue, because everyone in the series has a rifle and grenades which are lethal to every character, Tex in the first episode included.

For the next part I believe, there should be a disclaimer: this is a personal opinion, and Not an analysis. I have seen Freelancer just once, and can't say I want to rewatch it, as I didn't like those seasons. While I understand the shift to more epic animation sequences of super-cool space soldiers, I do not like the plot armor it requires characters to have, and this is not why I fell in love with RvB.

My main problem with the "competition" setting of Freelancer saga is that, well, there Is no competition if the missions are a team effort. Competition requires every character to be on a even ground with others, so they could compare their skills with each other, but this doesn't work if they don't have similar skills to compare. Every Freelancer has their speciality and role in the team (York - security, North - sniper, South and Maine - muscle, etc), so they can't exactly compete with each other. Even Carolina, the supposed leader of the team and 'the best', doesn't show any skills in security or marksmanship, mostly she just does hand-to-hand combat or camouflages herself to have a better position in hand-to-hand, so she couldn't exactly compete with other Freelancers too. She has a rivalry with Tex, but she doesn't have all the skills Tex has to really compete with her, except chasing each other, or close combat. Also, Carolina doesn't really have leadership skills necessary for her position in the group, she just stations everyone according to their main skill so the mission goes on correctly, but she is not responsible for her team, or concerned for them, she uses her position just to show off. (I'm really full of Caroline 'the best' worship)

Freelancers character-wise are actually good, they have easily distinguishable traits, good dynamics and banter, especially some agent-AI combinations are a highlight here (York-Delta and North-Theta). I wish we had more time dedicated to agents themselves, so we could learn more about them, but well, we got what we got.

 The 3 models I made are wearing all black salon uniforms. Dressing in all black takes the focus off of the stylists and puts it onto the clients where it should be.  All of their other outfits are made with their favorite colors in mind and are heavily themed with a 1980's vibe because I'm kind of stuck in that era because the music, fashion, and hair were so cool... still cool. So on with the pack...

By the time these little sponges are ready to move on to Kindergarten at 5 yrs old, many will be able to skip right into 1st grade.

NEW CAREERS

 -Hair Stylist This career is for the sim that believes it's all about the hair. Once a customer has the right hairstyle, anything is possible! Hair Stylists can wash hair, cut hair, color/highlight hair, perm or straighten hair & blow dry hair. Top level Supreme Hair Stylists unlocks hair extensions that come in long, medium, short, & extra short (to add bangs/fringe to most hair styles already in the game) with each length also being in straight, wavy, curly, or braided styles, each available in all colors for both females and males, age teen-elder. Depending on the hairstylist's level will be the outcome of the hairstyle given, so sometimes with lower levels there may be mistakes and corrections needed that result in comedic reactions by sims/hairstylists.  

 *Supreme Hair Stylist Bonus: Becoming a CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST: Once a sim reaches top level as a Supreme Hair Stylist, they will begin to gain notoriety and in time will reach "celebrity" hairstylist status. Once this is achieved they will start to receive celebrities/rockstars as clients, be asked to go on location to music video sets, and backstage at concerts, to work on musicians'/celebs' hair, and they'll hob-nob with the rich and famous. Also, a celebrity hair stylist can be Owner & Creative Director of a very successful hair salon w/ barely any problems. They'll even be given the opportunity to own a chain of hair salons if the first one is successful. 

 -Nail Technician/Artist 

A career for sims that believe a person can't be their very best without well manicured hands and feet. Services provided, how well and how quickly done, depends on the level of Nail Tech/Artist. Lower levels may either take longer or make mistakes such as wrong nail color or spills water on the client.  Once a higher level is reached the Nail Tech adds Artist to their repertoire and unlocks fun nail art & nail accessories. When a sim visits a Nail Artist the prices are higher, appointment is quicker, and you get to choose the color(s) of nail polish used on the sim, along with a paint design (flowers/hearts/holiday themes) and/or nail accessories such as glitter or rhinestones.  

 -Esthetician For the sim that sees other sims as walking Barbie & Ken dolls and helps them reach that status through ridding them of any and all body hair through artful waxing. Starting level can only provide facials, moustache waxing, & eyebrow waxing/shaping. They also provide skin treatments afterwards to sooth the red hot burning newly waxed fresh skin after peeling off a layer with the hot wax. Clients are taken to a private area (behind a curtain or door) for body waxing. Bikini waxing for female/male adult-elder is unlocked once an Esthetician reaches the top level as an Elite Esthetician.  

(Note on how I see the Esthetician career as working in the game... Once an Esthetician reaches "elite" level they can start body waxing clients, so the nude sim laying on the table will have blurred privates, same as when they shower, but we'll know the spot the Esthetician is waxing as the sim will make some kind of horrible scream and/or face due to the wax being ripped off which makes for funny game play. You see it too, right?

 -Hair Salon Owner & Creative Director  This career is the ultimate goal for most Hair Stylists... a dream come true. This career is best suited for the sim who has achieved the top level as Supreme Hair Stylist because they know what they're doing, what the salon needs, and more importantly what their employees and clients need. Even with all of their experience and knowledge in the hair industry, they still hit bumps in the road and make mistakes. Hair Salon Owner & Creative Director may also work well for other salon employees after a sim reaches either the Finest Nail Artist level or the Elite Esthetician level. They will run into a few surprise bumps that the Supreme Hair Stylist knows how to avoid, but they have a better chance of success than a sim that has no salon experience. With that being said a sim without prior salon experience who can afford it, can be a Hair Salon Owner & Creative Director; however, that sim will  have a much more difficult time in being the salon owner & creative director with more mishaps, unhappy employees, angry clients, and more stress than the Supreme Hair Stylist that becomes an owner & creative director. Their chance of failure with the salon closing down is 50% higher than that of a salon employee & 75% higher risk than that of a Supreme Hair Stylist.  Top level for Hair Salon Owner & Creative Director opens up the opportunity for them to expand into a Hair Salon Chain Owner.

-Professional Contemporary Music Artist This career is for the sim that wants to be a Music Idol & Pop Culture Icon. Those that seek after a career as a professional contemporary music artist include sims that have dreamt about success as either a solo pop or hip-hop artist, or as a member of a rock band, or a member in a popular boy or girl band. Their journey begins when they begin to practice singing and/or playing instruments. As their skill increases, they'll gain notoriety performing in venues around town until finally a big music manager contacts them after hearing them perform in a local bar and offers them an audition. If the audition goes well, they'll then be offered a contract with choices such as music genre & solo artist or in a band to begin their musical career. Once the contract is signed, the sim will start receiving dates for live concert gigs that you will be able to follow and play sim through the onstage performances as well as the backstage after parties. At top level the sim will become known as a "King/Queen of Music" which will unlock many new items made for a rock/pop superstar including clothing,  jewelry, big hairstyles, & other rockstar items themed after 1980's musical legends that are known for their music & iconic fashion styles such as George Michael (Wham!), Prince, Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, Cher, Run DMC, Heart, Janet Jackson, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Cyndi Lauper, & Boy George (Culture Club).

 NEW TRAITS: 

 FINICKY - A sim with this trait is extremely hard to please & they change their minds often too. Finicky sims are the customers that businesses, hair stylists, & servers have nightmares about. They want things exactly like they want it, and if it's not to their preferences, they'll throw a hissy fit refusing to pay for services. At the hair salon they're the client that will ask for a certain hair style or nail style, and halfway through they'll change their mind or when finished burst out in tears saying they don't like it. If they place an order over the phone, or in a restaurant, there's a good chance by the time it arrives, they'll no longer want it causing them to pout, complain & refuse to pay for it. If they enjoy an activity one day, they may hate it the next. If they have a romantic interest, they may lose interest faster than other sims. They may even become the runaway bride or groom. Their likes & dislikes change often because they are FINICKY. 

LEECH - A sim with this trait is outgoing, cheerful, & charming so making a new friend, or romantic connection, is easy for them & quicker than other sims, but once another sim befriends them they will become the center of the LEECH sim's world. A LEECH will only want to do things with that one friend or love interest, and they will expect the same from that friend or love interest. They want to do everything with ONLY that 1 person, and can show up at any time, & anywhere, uninvited to be with them. When not with their friend, they're calling them on the phone, even if they're at work. And if they see their 1 friend/love interest being friendly with anyone else, they will act out in sneaky jealous "accidental" actions towards the other sim who is "stealing" their friend's attention away from the LEECH, such as spilling a drink on them, or bumping into them hard enough to knock them out of the way, or causing them to trip, or pulling their chair out from under them. A LEECH will talk to anyone that will listen to them, and when they're really lonely they will visit their favorite hangouts to talk to the employees knowing as a customer they have to talk to them and be nice. The LEECH is often a Rockin Key business' nightmare client because they tend to hang around bothering the employees or other customers looking for attention.   Some leeches even ask for free things like a drink. The LEECH doesn't have the same obsession with their family members, only with that 1 special friend/love interest which may be their spouse. With family members the LEECH is known for inviting themselves to dinner, or on outings (and of course leeches always forget their wallet no matter who they're with); however, when they make that 1 special friend or love interest their family is relieved because they get a break from the LEECH that will now come around much less often, if ever, while in the other relationship. Breaking off a relationship with the LEECH is not pretty either. They will throw huge fits no matter where or how the break up happens. And don't be surprised if the sim that broke it off now finds themselves being watched with a telescope or being followed when they go out as the LEECH has a very hard time letting go & may pop up at any time just to say "hi" w/ a creepy smile as they walk away. They also may find that their mail has been stolen when the electric is suddenly shut off due to non-payment since the LEECH out of anger stole their mail, though they're unable to prove it to the police. 

 WALLFLOWER- This sim is a romantic at heart, creative, super sweet & friendly, but has trouble approaching other sims, especially strangers because they're shy. They long to socialize with other sims & enjoy going out on the town to different venues/events hoping to make a friend, or meet that special someone; however, once they arrive, they will stay seated and will not approach sims becoming a WALLFLOWER while they wait for sims to approach them. Once they become friends with a sim, they're charming, super sweet, & a bit more chatty, but still more quiet & agreeable than most sims. Being shy they are the exact opposite of a leech as they will often pay for others, and wait for their friends, or family, to call them to make plans as they don't want to bother anyone. If a sim they care about takes too long to contact them they become gloomy or will sit at home & cry alone wondering why that sim doesn't like them. When it comes to business owners, the WALLFLOWER is a favorite customer/client as they're so sweet they're always happy/content with the service provided for them. 

 COUCH POTATO - They live to entertain themselves from a chair or a couch whether at home, a friend's house, or a night out. They tire much faster than other sims & have to sit down more often if out and about. One of their favorite things to do is sit and watch tv which they also enjoy blogging about their favorite shows and movies. If sim also has an outgoing trait they can often be found out at venues that have entertainment, or activities that require or encourage sitting such as a bar, movie theater, park bench, laying out by a pool, library, or hair salon. These venues look forward to visits from their COUCH POTATO customers/clients as they tend to stay awhile, spending more money, so they don't have to get up and go back home after coming all this way. The thought, or sight, of physical exercise quickly drains their energy, and they may need to stop for a power nap whether they are at home, a friend's house, or out on the town.

how devil may cry 5 disappoints with its depiction of race, transgenders, and women, and why DmC Devil May Cry does it better

the hottest action game of 2019, devil may cry 5, is a big disappointment for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to: racist depictions of african americans, outing a trans person, and sexualizing women to the point where i mistook them as strippers

in devil may cry, dante and his twin brother vergil are half-demons, their father the dark knight sparda and their mother eva. however, this falls flat on its face when you realize the subtle meaning behind this: dante and vergil are half black. this means that not only did devil may cry pull a “black father abandons their kids” trope, as sparda turns into the sword sparda (i had to look this up!?!?), abandoning his kids, but it also means that dante is suffering guilt over being black. this becomes much more apparent in devil may cry 5, where dante’s theme “subhuman” is obviously dante feeling as if he were a subhuman for having african-american blood in him. worse yet, spoiler warning! vergil is revealed to have used his japanese katana yamato to split his body into 2: v and urizen. v represents the white parts of vergil, the sophistication, the guilt of being black, while urizen is the black half of vergil, more tall and powerful than the rest of the cast. even more appalling, this is implying that black people are demons! this game might as well have had dante wear the confederate outfit on his trenchcoat (also a dogwhistle of white supremacy groups and implying that dante wants to be a school shooter)!

to further strip devil may cry 5 of its undeserved praise, there’s a midgame boss that dante fights known as cavaliere angelo, a “male” knight. however, when dante beats angelo, “trish” is revealed to have been inside of “him”. this is not only outing cavaliere angelo, who is in actuality a female and the game never reveals (or more likely refuses to use) her pronouns, it is an act of violence against transwomen, as dante violently rips angelo apart so that he can simply zoom away on his new bike he stole from her. wacky wahoo pizza man indeed.

speaking of women, devil may cry has terrible representation with its women: nico, lady, and trish are all sexualized! nico wears jorts and a croptop, but she’s a mechanic! she might as well put her welding torch right on her skin! lady (devil may cry 5 did not even give her a real name!?) is naked when we first see her, and the next scene uses her nudity as a punchline to a joke in the next scene! to top it all off, trish is wearing leather that reveals her boobs! and she’s a devil hunter? plus i’m very certain she uses the same model as some random lady in a cutscene. talk about lazy! none of these women use practical clothing to fight devils, unlike nero, dante, or v. it’s insulting how the devil may cry 5 team puts these women in like they’re some decorations for the male-dominated series. they might as well be wearing collars or something demeaning like that.

unlike devil may cry 5, DmC Devil May Cry, the 2013 reboot, has powerful women to progress the story and influences dante in a way that the original could never hope to imagine. kat helps dante throughout the story, and when she’s kidnapped, it drives dante to finally reach out and help out. lilith is also the main driving force behind mundus (yes she gets killed but it’s a powerful motivator!) and is the reason why he finally decides to attack dante and vergil. it also doesn’t have any transphobic content within (it doesn’t have any but better to have none than to have something horrible), and its depiction of race is much better handled (dante is still a half demon but he’s also half angel, alongside vergil), as demons are more obviously representative of white people since many of the demons’ vessels as white.

DmC Devil May Cry may have its fair numbers of issues, but those can be overlooked because of its everlasting image of how capitalism destroys people, is corrupting society, and how despite everything, we have to stand against it. yes vergil did shoot a pregnant woman, yes kat is in danger most of the time, yes the writing is edgy, yes dante doesn’t have white hair, but those are all in the pursuit of something that goes beyond just one person. DmC Devil May cry focuses on the whole picture, rather than devil may cry 5′s message of how friendship prevails.

as a side note, devil may cry 5′s soundtrack is very overrated, and its ending was cheesy enough to make a lactose intolerant person vomit. seriously, grow up, no one wants to hear about friendship or family or whatever anymore.

overall, i’d give this game the same stylish rank that it’s given me every mission:
