Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Monday: Favorite character

DQ is a sea of good characters imo, with many favorite boys and girls such as Alena, Torneko, Harry, Debora, Carver, Milly, Ashlynn, Maribel, Ruff, Kiefer, Red, Medea, Yangus, Erinn, Veronica, Serena, Sylv, Boy Malroth...

But ultimately i chose Maribel from Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten World. Nothing wrong with any of the others i mentioned, but I just love how bold, daring, caring, fun, strong and outspoken she is. Her banter with Kiefer and Ruff is delightful. I started reading the DQVII manga a while ago since it started getting localized here in Spain and hoo boy, what a good manga! Their portrayal of the trio (we’re getting the third book tomorrow!) is incredible, made me like them even more. Auster speaking is such an upgrade! Makes me wish we got a DQ game with a talking protagonist ;p

Anyway, back to Maribel: I like how the game gives subtle and not-so-subtle clues on why she acts the way she does. How we know she envies Auster for being a boy -which means greater freedom., not being the son of the mayor -even greater freedom-, and instead being the son of a great fisherman -thats her dream job, she wants to go fishing with other townsfolk; thats why she tries to infiltrate the ship in the beginning of the game-. Sure, she’s mean to him and Kiefer (similar to Auster, but he does whatever he wants regardless of his responsabilities... which she also ends doing but yeah), but she’s kind to many others through the game, starting with Maeve in the first island the trio visits.

And her growth during the game! Subtle but effective, mostly done through party chat but also through main story dialog. That’s the reason i usually pick Debora in my DQV replays, but Maribel is more enjoyable to me because its longer.

In conclusion: writting this post made me realize i need to replay VII this summer.

Some Stuff About Maribel (DQVII)

So I would like to quickly point out a few things I noticed about Maribel that I find most people either don't acknowledge or don't notice.

Yes, she is pretty sassy and rude. I'm definitely not saying that she isn't. But she's mainly only rude to the main hero and a few others. If you look back on the times that she said something rude that made you roll your eyes, odds are it was directed at Auster. But to people she doesn't know very well, she's actually generally rather polite. She will talk negatively about others to Auster, but not to their face. This shows up in her interactions with Maeve among others.

Basically, either being rude is how she shows her affection (There are definitely those that are that way. Plus she's still young.) or she's just comfortable enough with Auster that she can show her true self when around him. Auster probably knows this, hence why he doesn't seem to mind.

I also feel like Maeve's death was probably the hardest on Maribel. If Maeve had joined the team, she could've very well been like a big sister to Maribel, something that Maribel probably needed more than anyone else. Instead, she had to watch her die. That couldn’t have been easy.

I for one prefer characters with a little attitude, regardless of whether it's positive or negative, but I think that Maribel is a little more complicated than a lot of people give her credit for.
