I'm minutes into this week's Vampire Academy, and I had to stop to appreciate Rose and Lissa's friendship.

Here Rose is grieving a friend, grieving her adolescence, and her mother sends her a notorious email expressing the importance of a "Molnija" but not any interest in the nuance of who Rose had to kill to get that mark. Janine wishes she could be with Rose for the tradition of it all, the significance of it within their society. Not for Rose because "duty comes first."

And I know Janine's role in the Vampire Academy world is complicated, but narratively it's clever to cut to Rose noticing that Lissa is there for her. No matter the restrictions, no matter their separate duties — these two girls will show up for each other through the thickest and thinnest. It's endearing to watch.

I didn't know what to say to that. I was speechless, which he seemed to like.

“It’s what created your bond, too. Her feelings always press out of her, onto others. Most people can't pick up on them unless she's actually directing her thoughts towards them with compulsion. You, however, have a mind sensitive to extrasensory forces— hers in particular.” He signed, almost happily, and I remembered reading that Vladimir had saved Anna from death. That must have made their bond, too.

finally finished vatv and i have SOOOOO many thoughts but whats really shocking is that i only had one major issue/criticism......why didnt rose and lissa spend more time together lmao. i understand that lissa's pov had to carry the court plotlines but in the books every other word in rose's pov was 'lissa' they were so so so so unhealthily obsessed and codependent that when show!rose even CONSIDERED leaving the academy without lissa i was like ???? hello??? theyre DRAGOWAY. i loved all their moments i just think there needed to be twice as much of them
