He just looks so naked with his hair like that.

Daniel’s thought drifted over the pounding music inside the bar and found itself caught in the net of Armand’s mind.

He’d been staring at Armand’s throat all night, ever since they’d stepped out the door and headed to the bar. Daniel’s eyes kept wandering up and down the pale length of it. Armand had hoped for a reaction- in fact, he’d fantasized about how Daniel might gawk at him; had spent his entire time in the barber’s chair trying to imagine how Daniel’s expression would change when he turned up with his hair cropped short. He’d assumed he’d get a lustful look, perhaps an off hand comment. Nothing like this. He hadn’t thought Daniel would stare all night.

If Armand peered into his mind he would be able to see the faint purple line of his carotid artery. Could follow Daniel’s eyes up along it to where his jaw met his throat, the sharp angle of it drawing his attention to the hollow beneath his ear. His earlobes. Daniel so rarely saw his ears unless he tucked his hair back behind him. With it shorn off this short they were completely exposed, and Daniel’s gaze kept lingering on them. An image drifted through his mind of what it would be like to lean in and bite one.

Armand ran his hand up the nape of his neck, mimicking the kind of absent gesture a mortal man might make. He scratched at the short hairs there and listened to Daniel’s pulse race.

He was so easy to distract. So incredibly simple to arouse. It made Armand envious, in a way. It had been ages since he’d been able to let himself fall to pieces in front of another, and here Daniel sat, liable to let himself collapse under the weight of anything Armand said or did. Happy to, in fact. Daniel gave up control so easily. Would let Armand initiate almost anything with him, provided he was the willing victim. He’d never shown the inclination to swap roles and well-

That was alright. Armand would live with that. And besides, as a mortal Daniel could never overpower him and as an immortal- Armand cut that thought off. It would do neither of them any good for him to sit here and picture Daniel as one of his own.

He closed his eyes and tilted his head back. Imitated the way Daniel rolled his head from side to side to crack his neck and listened for Daniel’s thoughts.

Is this what he sees when he looks at me? Is my bare neck like porn to someone like him? Daniel picked at the label on his bottle of beer. I wonder if he sits around and thinks about biting me when sees my throat. If he’d-

Daniel shook his head. He cut his own thought off and turned his gaze back to the wooden bar top.

“If I would what, Daniel?” Armand asked.

Short and sweet. About two years into the chase, Daniel finds himself in a motel, alone and horny and wishing Armand would appear.

This is for Dungeon Anon, who's been such a supportive and amazing presence in this fandom. I don't know if this what you wanted but I hope it doesn't disappoint! 💖💖 And for me because I can't get the chase years out of my head lately.

Excerpt:

He doesn’t know what to make of the kissing. But surely Armand had enjoyed it. He’d threaded his fingers through Daniel’s hair and made a sound… God, that sound. Daniel would never forget it: a primal almost-growl that had set all his nerves on fire. 

Even the memory of it makes him hard and he shifts on the bed, wishing Armand was here now. Wishing he could kiss him again. He wonders what it would have felt like if Armand’s fangs had pierced his throat. He remembers Louis’ fangs in his neck but the memory is hazy, stripped of its sharp detail by time. And anyway, it’s not Louis he wants.

He pictures Armand again, standing in front of him, those soft brown eyes shaded by auburn lashes that match his fiery hair, his red lips. God, they were so soft! And Armand had worked his cool tongue with expert skill. 

Daniel’s erection strains against his pants as he imagines all the ways Armand could use his tongue.

I'm always thinking about the ways other characters describe Armand vs how he describes himself. They all seem to agree on the basics (angelic, ethereal, radiant, Boticelli angel, most beautiful boy alive/among the undead, etc.), but what can I say I love nitpicking 😌My findings are as follows:

Marius: the only one who describes Armand as actually having slavic features, I believe he uses the phrase "sharp" to describe his high cheekbones ("sharp yet delicate" or something along those lines). By the time I read B&G I had already read all of the previous books in the series (up until that point) so this is what stood out to me the most and I rarely see people mentioning it! And it might be one of my favorite descriptions of Armand ever, you can actually feel just how astonishing his beauty is. Had Marius so thoroughly shook.

Lestat: Angel boy, angel mouth, cherub, so beautiful it's stupid, this is SURELY what love/desire must feel like, "I just beat the shit out of him and I should probably kill him but GOD HE'S SO FUCKING PRETTY I CAN'T". PRINCESS AT THE BALL. NOT ONE BUT TWO PRINCESSES. Also calls him a "sad(?) waif" which is fucking hilarious when you consider Armand is later like "I'm not a fucking waif" but Lestat definitely called him one in TVL AND YOU KNOW WHAT. I BELIVE HIM!!!! I do 😌

Louis: Simple yet undeniable beauty, seductive asf, got him horny and in bad parent mode in record time yet ever the gentleman, he only used the most sophisticated adjectives to describe him. I would have LOVED to have gotten more stuff from Louis POV post-IWTV, specially because Anne did a bit of a retcon when it came to Armand's looks (iirc Louis described his hair as being straight??? Though his hair was always auburn). I wanna know what Louis thinks of Armand as we all know and love him pls 🤧

Daniel: hottest bitch alive, can't even think straight because of how horny I am all the time. Even when I'm tryna talk shit about him I CAN'T because he's so fucking hot, dammit (paraphrasing but "he looked normal... if you call looking this fucking hot normal 🥵"). Props for mentioning how cute/dorky/human his laugh is and how pretty he looks when his hair falls on his face AND how effortlessly stunning he looks with long OR short hair. Daniel never recovered from this, obviously.

In summary: he's a teeny tiny pretty baybay 🥲🤏 but will also awaken kinks you didn't even know you had 🥵🥵🥵 15/10 would hit again except Lestat yk

I was stewing on this for an entire (hectic) day because I think about it a lot — almost all of Anne's vampires appear to fall within the conventional range of attractive but she really went overboard with Armand and the sheer amount of prose dedicated to his ethereal, captivating, otherworldly appearance.

Marius really said: 'abandoned angel' while Lestat went, 'Cinderella at the ball'. And you're correct, Lestat does call Armand a waif in TVL in one of my favorite passages:

"Grotesque he seemed, among all the candles and the swimming colors of the flat, this filthy waif of the netherworld, and yet his beauty held sway. He hadn't needed the shadows of Notre Dame or the torchlight of the crypt to flatter him."

I do generally default to waif meaning skinny and unhealthy, but I looked it up and it also means 'a homeless, neglected or abandoned person, especially a child'; which ties into how Lestat thought of Armand as an orphan:

[...] this quiet and forceful one, the one who would survive, no matter how the orphan in him wept.

That's my all-time favorite Armand description btw. 🥹

Since we're talking TVL, I'll refer back to what you said about IWTV, which was published almost an entire decade earlier! Armand was in his 20s in the original IWTV short story, and therefore his appearance isn't described as having all the exceedingly youthful qualities that are later endowed to him in TVL and onwards. Here's a few examples from Louis in IWTV:

"I had a strong sense of him [Armand] then, the separate being that he was, the calm and collected creature with the straight auburn hair and the large, sometimes melancholy eyes [...]."

"I looked at Armand, at his large brown eyes in that taut, timeless face [...].

"[...] Armand was beautiful and simple, and no intimacy with him would ever have been repellent."

So I think the descriptions we're given does a paint a more mature physical image than TVL-era Armand. TVL is also the first time we're given Armand's mortal age as being 17 years old. If you've read CoSB, which Anne wrote in between IWTV and TVL, some of my friends and I have this theory that she based Armand's later physical characteristics off of the character Alexi (a young sex slave). 🫣

Marius's first impression of Armand:

And there I saw beauty, beauty which has always been my downfall, beauty as in Pandora, as in Avicus, as in Zenobia, as in Bianca, beauty in a new and celestial form. Heaven had cast down upon this stone floor an abandoned angel, of auburn curls and perfectly formed limbs, of fair and mysterious face.

I reached down to take him by the arms and I lifted him, and I looked into his halfopened eyes. His soft reddish hair was loose and tangled. His flesh was pale and the bones of his face only faintly sharpened by his Slavic blood.

In universe I attribute this distinction to Armand's Slavic features to the fact that he was a malnourished little thing when Marius saved him from the brothel. It makes sense that the bone structure in his face would be more defined versus after Armand's been living well in Venice for a couple years, becoming in his own words, 'a plump and juicy young man'. Lestat describes Armand's cheeks as going 'apple-perfect' when he smiles in MtD, meaning that they're full and rounded, Armand still has that fat in his face.

I agree with you — I would have loved to see more of Armand from Louis's POV post-IWTV, once Anne had fully settled on what his character would be like! But here's a line from Louis to Armand in TVA that tells us this much:

"And like a dream, you've come back. We all had inklings of it, wild whispers that you'd been seen in New York, as handsome and vigorous as you ever were. But I had to lay eyes on you to believe it."

'Handsome and vigorous' is how post-IWTV and pre-PL (Trinity Gate era) Louis describes Armand!

TVA is definitely not everyone's favorite VC novel, but it is mine, because it's the only one where we get to see inside Armand's head. And it's an excellent example of how differently we see ourselves, even superficially, compared to how others see us.

There's also a concept that I see play out a lot irl that basically dictates that oftentimes our brains tend to freeze people as they were when we first met them and this can be a difficult perception to break. A notion that perhaps can be applied here, for example: Marius first saw Armand as this angelic, broken child and Lestat first saw him as this being that's simultaneously horrifying and beautiful and begging him for his guidance. In contrast, Louis and Daniel meet Armand in a position of power and possibility that doesn't waver until further down the line. Armand is a different person to each one of them (just like how none of us are exactly the same nor seen exactly the same by anyone in our lives).

What is interesting too is the parallel between Lestat and Daniel using words like grotesque, awful, loathsome (in addition to the beautiful, captivating, angel, etc) in TVL and QotD re: Armand. And yet Armand is someone whom they both love and find themselves attracted to (for Lestat it's been an ongoing thing for 200 years and he can't figure out what to do about it - let us never forget 'good to embrace, good to love').

One of the key differences to me here is that Daniel romanticized vampirism and Lestat romanticized humanity and they're at opposite sides of the spectrum at these respective points in time. Lestat was a newborn vampire who was turned against his will and then almost immediately stumbled upon a cult of Satan worshippers advertising the worst that vampirism has to offer. Yes, Daniel did have to run for dear life for a good while there but in comparison he saw a much better side of Armand than Lestat ever did in Paris, no contest.

A final thing that stands out when I think about all this is how alluring all of them find Armand, and yet he spends so much of his life either alone, pinning, or losing whatever connection he might have had to those he loves. And this can be said for Marius and Lestat as well but it's just the juxtaposition of Anne making Armand this insanely bewitching, seductive creature to virtually all he encounters, but things rarely play out in his favor in that regard, and then when they do, they don't last.

(Until PL trilogy, you know what - thank fuck for those three books, it was rough being an Armand girlie back in the day and never knowing what happened to him after the events of B&G and Merrick, just absolutely horrendous).

Daniel definitely has a “side” of the bed and it’s the right one. It doesn’t matter if it’s only him and Armand in bed or if Louis is there or Lestat or all of them at the same time, Daniel’s side is the right side. I have absolutely no way of rationalizing this but it feels right for some reason. As for the untangling process, I think Daniel theoretically has it the easiest when you consider he’s on the right side with Armand just lightly pressed up against him but there are those times when Armand’s whole head is on his forearm and moving his arm might actually alter the entire structure of the bed pile AND cause Armand a slight inconvenience and it’s also like doing it to a cat, and it’s no longer possible to live with yourself after the fact 🥺, if he were human he’d be numb all day if he had to. Lestat is on the left side, firmly holding onto Louis but also with some of his limbs in direct contact with Armand’s, so him attempting to untangle usually means waking everyone else up. Louis is the only one with the inexplicable talent to wake up, untangle himself from both Lestat and Armand and get out of bed without making any sound. Next thing you know he’s in a different room altogether with a book in his hand while everyone else is still in bed. Armand is an early riser but would gladly stay tangled up all night, with his lomls all pressed up against him, so he doesn’t even attempt to untangle himself from anyone unless they do it first xoxo DA 🥰

You know it's funny because I usually put Daniel and Louis on the outside of the bed pile and while I did think Louis was a left side, I didn't so much define it as Daniel being on the right but he would be! I think it's because I think the door is on the left and Louis prefers to be closest to the door though I'm not really sure WHY he prefers that either. It's just an instinct.

I think for untangling, it depends how you see their bedroom too because I think if Daniel is furthest from the door and the bed is gigantic, trying to get away and sneak off when Louis is perhaps the only other person who sleeps later than him is probably extremely funny. I do think Armand likes to feel enveloped when he sleeps, even if it's a post waking doze where he can stay snug and cozy so he absolutely would be so inconvenienced if one of his 'walls' decided to get up before he was ready to let them go. There would be a full on pissy kitty face to deal with.

I love the idea that Lestat had his arm around Louis but has tangled his legs with Armand's to the point that if either of them try to get up, they're going to trip each other up so they can't detangle either. Also living for the idea Louis is the only one with a secret talent to extricate himself from the bed pile and go find a quiet place to read or go and eat.

I wonder if that's what Lestat might sometimes do, go and eat and then climb over everyone just to squirm back into the middle like an oversized hot water bottle.

Maybe that's more of a before bed thing - I do wonder if Louis goes up first because he probably sleeps first but also wants to read in bed (modern luxuries means he can do that without a coffin), though I imagine once someone is there, Armand turns limpet and cannot come unstuck. I think in terms of timing, Daniel probably can't go much later than Louis so possible they end up going up together more and Armand is like WAIT I AM THE SANDWICH FILLING and goes up too. Lestat just comes in, walks onto the bed (probably trodding on them because he wants the attention) and squirming his way between Armand and Louis. Probably steals Daniel's headphones or Louis' book if they still have them and any glaring is just met with a quick kiss and no other acknowledgement.

LOVE your meta about Daniel’s ND-ness having a lot to do with him letting his hunger build but imo it’s also worth considering how his years-long (a whole decade!) pattern of him begging Armand to give him his blood and Armand making him wait/work for it (“not now, lover”, “not here”, “later, first you have to listen to me”) until finally giving in and letting him drink from him might’ve played a role in it, how it turned into a thing where an “immediate” pay off wasn’t enough of a reward for Daniel. He has to let it build for it to actually feel like something he’s earned, and imo it would make sense if he’d also been conditioned by Armand to behave like this post-turning, even if it’s a matter of survival now and even if it’s not Armand’s blood anymore.

Yeah I think it can be both!! Because there is so much potential for anticipation- deciding when to hunt, where to go, how the victim will be chosen. And he's surrounded by various vampires who all have varied methods, so it's the perfect time to let the excitement build and experiment with the art of feeding himself.

But like it also makes me wonder about the mechanism of vampire thirst. Is it like human hunger, where it builds to a crescendo and then the cue just dies, and the brain forgets the body is hungry at all? Does he ever wake up with the thought that's starving, needs to feed, and then gets absorbed in something else and that hunger cue just goes numb?

And like at what point did the 'too many cooks in the kitchen' aspect of Night Island fuck with his relationship to Armand as his maker? Because typically new vampires only have one to learn from, the one who turned them. But suddenly Daniel is thrust into a milleu of much older vampires, all of whom might take him aside and teach him things. And maybe that somehow spoiled the ability to develop a routine with feeding, contributed to his erratic nature, and eroded his ties with Armand.

There's so much to think about and honestly we talk about new vampire Daniel SO LITTLE, I gotta mine this era of his life more.

Dying at the mental image of Daniel knocking on Armand’s bedroom door at Trinity Gate for the fourth night in a row like “WELP 😵‍💫 I have somehow ended up here again 😜😇 boss look I have nowhere else to go 😟 the cellars are dusty and smelly and full of moody immortals 🥺 whats’a a poor horny fledging to do? 😔🍆” and Armand is nodding along very seriously to everything he says because he’s 100% into this being some kind of roleplay for them and it’s fun and it’s been a while since they did this so he lets Daniel in and has his way with him. The following night they wake up like a pair of kittens who fell asleep while they were play fighting, with their fangs still in each other’s throats/body parts. Eventually they come to an unspoken agreement (I mean it’s been weeks!) and Daniel just starts letting himself in and lays in bed with Armand while caressing his hair until they both fall asleep. They think they’re being discreet but absolutely everyone at TG knows they’re fucking again and are definitely gossiping about it xoxo DA

DA!!! This is delightful and I love everything about it. I love the idea of it starting as a bit of a Daniel going "Hey, maybe if I just say good night, he'll let me stay," so he knocks and maybe thanks him for the guest room and compliments Armand's room, and wow, is that a fireplace! Do you use that thing? Bet it's great in the winter! And then oops, he's over the threshold and complimenting the rest of the room and wow, it's gotten so late and--yawn--I guess I could head to my room but that's kind of a long way.

The idea of them making it a game is so perfect and absolutely something they'd do! Just pretending Daniel is only intending to say good night and head off but it never quite happens and he just ends up in Armand's bed every night, and Armand pretends he's exasperated that Daniel can't seem to get to his own room or the cellars or wherever he was set up to stay but really is relieved to have him there.

And yes to them waking up like kittens, curled around each other, limbs tangled together (love the fangs still in throats, oof! That's hot! 🥵🥵) Armand pretending that he accidentally fell back to sleep after sunset woke him up and oops, guess I'm still here in bed with you! Funny how that keeps happening. At some point, Armand will give him a key to his bedroom "just in case." And that's basically when the game stops and Daniel is just sliding into Armand's bed--whether Armand is there yet or not--every single night. And of course Armand caressing him while he falls asleep is perfect. (I headcanon--and I think a lot of us do--that Daniel has a sort of mortal grogginess that makes him fun to snuggle and caress when he's sleepy!)

And LOL of course everyone knows! Lestat pegged it the first time Armand came into the room looking just slightly less tense. Louis was dubious but agreed two nights later when he saw Daniel sitting in the garden watching Armand talking to someone else across the room and looking a little flushed. No one is surprised, and everyone wonders why it matters at all, but they're far too polite to say anything. Except Lestat, who will razz Daniel at the first opportunity, messing up his hair and saying, "It's about time!"

Thank you so much! I do very much look forward to seeing your inspiration sprinkling about my dashboard but my ability with the spicy means that anything remotely so requires several weeks work whereas last night's was written as a fever dream.
