Was it order as such that we disliked, or was it this particular type of order? Perhaps there was something inherently wrong with what was achieved. Is there a possibility that it was not order as such that artists intuitively disliked, but just this particular form of order that the colonial, industrial, capitalistic Europe of the late 19th and early 20th century adopted. Surely, different ideas of order also exist, and may have existed too. Perhaps it is not the reason itself the artists were rejecting – perhaps it was the idea of reason available to them, created by that particular society that they found repulsive and obsolete. The art they stood up against and deemed decadent was not the key – it was the idea of reason and order behind that art that was the true issue, where the true decadence was. What was wrong with this particular idea of reason and this particular take on order? What was wrong with the period today referred to as “la belle époque” (the beautiful era) – by many accounts, the veritable pinnacle of European society, ancient and advanced at the same time, modern and antique; society able to produce the most cutting edge technology, the most daring and functional inventions, yet also able to respect and venerate the works of art and literature thousands of years old? What could have been wrong with the idea of order produced by the society that married these seemingly polar opposites of being firmly rooted in millennia of tradition and being able to change the very face of earth with such easy and efficacy? Was it the industrial power that so resoundingly won over the world that discouraged the artist, and made them feel insignificant? Was it the annulation of importance of (manly) strength and power, brought about by the industrial revolution?
