Why Alan couldn’t cut it-
Tumblr media
I’m not beating the “is obsessed with the 82’ novelization accusations, this is my 5th time reading it. In my defense it’s great and adds a lot of detail, anyways.
Tumblr media
The way it talks about Alan and his morals really struck me. They put him into a great contrast with Dillinger and even Flynn, who ultimately does good but is a bit looser when it comes to following rules. The paragraph says it better than I’m going to but his decision to go along with the break in plan comes simply because he feels what’s happening at ENCOM is wrong. Someone has to do something, Alan waits before acting himself sees if anyone attacks from a legal Avenue. A “someone will” attitude, because he has so much faith in others that he knows it’s not just him who will see a issue and want to do something about it. Not him but someone will… unfortunately we don’t live in a world with many “doers”. His decision to go along with the break in is a spur of the moment, he’s struck with sympathy for Flynn and his already existent frustration and sense of wrong. It’s probably one of the first times he doesn’t talk himself into backing down.
Tumblr media
Alan is a good man. A honest man and a hard worker who’s faith in others is a bit higher than they deserve. He’s a rarity! A honest, rule following businessman. That’s why he could never last at the top of ENCOM, in “the last day” short film and likely the Flynn lives campaign there’s a brief mention of Alan being a Temp CEO while Flynn was missing. This was a very brief period in the 90s that quickly saw him pushed back down onto the board and basically being expected to shut up. Almost a quite firing. He’s not cut out for the cutthroat corporate game - he’s good at deals and explaining what they do but that only gets you so far… I can also see why from a talk perspective. In the Paranoids online mini video he absolutely flounders until Lora swoops in to save him. He’s not exactly Flashy Kevin flynn who could go “woof” into the mic and make the crowd go wild.
Additionally I love how much this puts him into contrast with Tron. For all the things that make Alan weak in the business world are what make Tron the admirable chosen warrior, the noble hero, within the grid. Here all of the best aspects of Alan are commemorated. That honesty, faith and stalwart behavior are better suited for the mythical other world of fairytale endings. Good conquers evil, the MCP explodes and the end. In the real world? Good luck, good guys can’t seem to win anymore.

Since today is International Workers' Day, I thought about what would happen if the ENCOM employees decided to unionize. Dillinger would presumably have none of it, and would use every dirty trick in the book to stop it.
I imagine that Flynn as CEO would go "come one now, that's not necessary, we're all a big family here right? You can just come talk to me about any problems." And then Alan and Lora would very patiently explain to him why that's not enough. I'd like to think he'd eventually come around on the subject.

Who is your User, Program?
Tumblr media
Well… there's no way to make this easy, really.
Several different perspectives on that complex question, "Who is your User?"… as directed toward the MCP himself.
Tumblr media
On the Tron Wiki, both Gibbs and Dillinger are listed.
Looking for evidence of these claims in onscreen canon of the '82 movie, there's clear support for Dillinger:
Tumblr media
I may be missing something, but I don't see any explicit claim of Walter Gibbs as the MCP's User…
...although he IS explicitly stated to be the founder of ENCOM, so it seems likely he would have been involved in writing the MCP when it was a chess program.
(His own program, Dumont, at least confirms he was there at the time.)
Tumblr media
(Interestingly, right after Dumont says he's "old enough to remember the MCP when it was just a chess program," his next words are "He started small, and he'll end small." Someday I'll have to analyze in more depth these alternating he/it pronouns for MCP. Perhaps "it" was the pronoun used back in the Chess Days?)
The prologue of the Tron: Betrayal comic offers another perspective on MCP's creation, but this is narrated by a version of Dumont who…. seems to have vastly distorted memories of what actually happened:
Tumblr media
"FLYNN WAS UNLIKE THE OTHER USERS. HE WAS, AND IS, A CREATOR. HE MADE ORDER FROM THE CHAOS OF ONES AND ZEROES."
…um. I think you transposed the words "chaos" and "order" there, program.
"HIS FINEST CREATION, THE MASTER CONTROL PROGRAM, REBELLED AND TRIED TO DESTROY HIM. THE MCP BROUGHT FLYNN TO THE GRID."
…setting aside the confusion of what exactly "The Grid" refers to here… even IF Kevin Flynn created the MCP, I cannot imagine anyone calling it his "finest" creation.
(Even by Flynn's own evaluation, at the time of the '82 movie, his infiltrator program Clu1 was "the best program ever written." Sorry, MCP, that sweet little User's boy is better'n you.)
Tumblr media
But anyway.
The Tron Wiki acknowledges that Dumont's narration here is incorrect:
Tumblr media
But we do, at least, know that Flynn interacted in some capacity with the MCP when it was a chess program:
Tumblr media
Could he have worked on beta-testing and/or debugging the chess functions?
If not the original programmer, he may at least have been involved in development of the MCP, in some capacity.
But now let's look at the MCP's own viewpoint on its origin.
When Dillinger says "I wrote you!" this is how MCP responds:
Tumblr media
He doesn't contradict Dillinger's claim to have written him, but he dismisses it as unimportant, in light of how far he's come since Dillinger did any of that writing.
Then, when Sark makes a similar admonishment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time, the MCP does contradict him, claiming he doesn't have one singular User. Rather, he considers himself a collaborative project so vast that any individual contributor is unimportant.
So, even if Dillinger and Gibbs-- and maybe Flynn-- were all involved in developing him… from his own hubris-soaked perspective, none of it even matters.
Tumblr media
Is this the face of his original User? Who cares. He started small and he ended small.

(Combining: GUEST :  for one muse to offer the other a place to stay. STORM :  for both muses to find shelter from a severe storm. Same universe as prev Ed and Sam rp?)
Sam had been tucked away in the basement of The Arcade, coding on The Grid’s terminal, so she didn’t hear the sound of the rain right away. When she did however it snapped her out of her trance. A jolt of slight panic coursing through her. The bike!
She raced up the stairs, pushing away the TRON machine she had moved back into place behind her so that Marvin didn’t wander in when she was working, and raced past the other covered, but no longer dusty, cabinet machines in the arcade till she was at the door, swiftly unlocking it. She paused under the covered threshold of the entrance when she saw just how much water was falling out of the sky. That was definitely one hell of a storm.
Well. It’s not like she was going anywhere anytime soon.
She flipped her hood up and walked out to the street towards her Dad’s… well her, Ducati now, kicking up the kickstand and grabbing onto the handlebars to walk it under the covered threshold. She lifted her head up when she heard the shuffling of feet and some splashes nearby. At first she didn’t recognize him through the rain until he got a bit closer. She lifted one of her arms, waving it slightly as she called out to be heard over the pounding of raindrops and howling wind.
“Ed! Hey! Over here!”
She rested the Ducati against the wall, still waving with her hand as she held open the door of the arcade to invite him inside.
@iamnoprogram
It was one of those days where Ed couldn't go home. One of the days where he was afraid of what he might do if he left his thoughts to wander. Usually he would stay at the office and code until he passed out at at the keyboard, but his meeting with Mackey earlier that day had been... it had been a lot of things, but certainly not good. Draining, mostly. And for reasons Ed wasn't quite sure of, it brought up old ghosts that Ed still couldn't put to rest. They were the sort of ghosts that made his office, which was normally a refuge, feel downright oppressive.
He'd hoped that a long walk would exhaust him enough that he could go home and pass out as as soon as he got to bed.
He'd been walking for about an hour and a half when the storm hit. It was one of those rare deluges came so suddenly, and so intensely, that LA's near non-existent storm drainage system quickly overflowed and flooded the streets. The kind he'd only seen a handful of times in the twenty-some-odd years he'd lived there.
Between the dark, and the rain fogging up his glasses, he had pocketed the glasses in hopes of preserving them when he inevitably tripped over his feet, and resigned himself to shuffling blindly back toward the tower and his car.
Not that he had any idea whether it would be better to go home or stay at the office.
He hadn't been walking back long when he heard someone calling his name, though it had still been long enough that he was thoroughly drenched, and shivering mildly from the cold. He froze in place on the sidewalk, having to take a moment to identify her by voice, since he was all but entirely blind.
"...Sam?" he asked, then realizing where he was, and that she was the only person likely to be there. He glanced both directions, and, seeing no lights, nor hearing any vehicles (there rarely were; this part of town had been all but abandoned since he was in middle school), shuffled across the street, navigating toward Sam by voice alone.
"Hi Sam," he said awkwardly, stepping under the eaves. "Uh, thanks," he said awkwardly, hesitantly following her into the Arcade.

/* not specifically one of the prompts from the captured meme, but inspired by it... Hope this works? --@not-that-dillinger */
Coming here turned out to be the worst of Ed's impulsive ideas, to date. Picking the lock on Flynn's arcade to go exploring? Bad impulsive decision number one. Sure, that was technically trespassing, but he was just looking around, no harm there, and that part of town had long since been abandoned, it wasn't like he was going to get caught.
In hindsight, getting caught there might have been the better outcome. Then he wouldn't have found the hidden basement, or The Computer. (And oh, wasn't that creepy. He still remembered his father's disembodied voice coming out of it. He'd had nightmares of it clear through middle school, he did not need that again.) He should have turned around and gone home, or to a bar or somewhere a reasonable person would go after a long day at the office, but no. Bad impulse decision number two: hacking into Flynn's computer. Again, technically illegal, but. Maybe he cold solve the mystery of where Flynn had disappeared to?
...And that had led directly to bad impulse decision number three: shooting himself with a high powered laser.
To his credit, Ed knew what the laser was. His father had ranted and raved about it in what seemed like fits of madness when Ed was young. But. Yeah, could have gone way worse.
Naturally, Ed's first instinct on finding himself in a strange new world was to go explore. He was used to being cautious, aware of his surroundings when he was out, and quickly realized someone was following him. He tried to lose them in the not-so-dark alleys of the glowing city, taking turns at random until--
--he'd turned a corner and came face to face with five others, all wearing masks, and realized he'd walked right into their trap. The last thing he remembered before he passed out was one of the programs throwing something small and round at him, and the thick white smoke it emitted.
...
He awoke in a cell, some time later. At first, he tried to just... sit and observe, figure out where he was, and who had captured him, and why.
Except, there wasn't much beyond the two guards posted at the end of the connecting hallway, and it didn't take long before his claustrophobia made him feel anxious.
"Hey!" he screamed at the guards. "Let me out!!!"
The guard made a gesture that Ed couldn't quite see, but could safely assume was rude.
Ed continued to scream at the guards, because there wasn't much else he could do. He may have been trapped, but they also stuck with him.
Except it turned out, the guards could do something about that, and one of them marched over opened the cell, and--
--Oh. They had staves.
Ed lay in his cell, some time later, out of breath and everything aching. He was certain he had a cracked rib, if not more. And a broken nose from the way it was bleeding.
And broken glasses.
It was some time later that Ed heard footsteps approaching his cell. Everything still hurt, but he hauled himself to his feet anyway. "Come back for round two, asshole?" he asked.
In response, the guard disabled the force field that enabled his cell, and shoved someone else inside.
Then they reactivated the force field, and walked away.
Ed sighed, and sank back down in his corner heavily. He eyed the blur of his fellow prisoner warily.
Rinzler hit the ground hard, barely managing to cover his helmet with his arms to avoid it getting even more damaged. One of the guards had decided to use Rinzler’s helmet as an emotional outlet after he had gotten a nasty hit in on one of them. Any assistive programming in their helmet was completely offline and the glass had multiple cracks with a few bits missing from the back as well.
Usually, Rinzler would have turned and grabbed the guard’s ankle before they could leave. Would have tackled the program and forced them to guide him to the exit or derezzed them with his claws if the guard refused. But it wasn’t just a shattered helmet and pounding head that was keeping Rinzler down. His captors had latched a bizarre mechanism over his disc and dock that made his whole body ache and every move just seemed to make the mechanism dig in even more. It was frustrating and humiliating beyond belief to be thrown into this cell like a helpless beta, they were supposed to be better than this. Not to fall for some poor young program that had been forced to act as bait. They should have seen through it. Rinzler swore to themself that they would derezz every single one of those who had done this.
When the blurry room finally stopped spinning Rinzler was just able to focus enough to hear the sound of ragged breathing above his own broken clicking purr. He wasn’t alone. The Enforcer looked up towards the sound, spying the blurry figure. They couldn’t see any bit of light on the figure that could indicate their alliance, in fact they couldn’t see any circuitry at all.
“Identify, program.” Rinzler shakily pushed himself up into a sitting position, keeping his gaze on the figure in case this was just another trap.

We would’ve made a great team-
Tumblr media
Sark’s borderline obsession with Tron is so interesting. He both admires and fears him, understands him perfectly but misunderstands him on a fundamental level. Both stand on opposite sides of the extreme, similar to each other in strength and ferocity but departed on a base level. The idea of them teaming up brings a interesting au to mind and several things to explore, however It would never happen unless Encom! Rinzler would become a thing. Teaming up with Red Elite would never be done willingly on Tron’s end while for Sark it might begrudgingly work with Tron.
There has to be a way to break him-
Sark has a morbid fascination with finding Tron’s breaking point. He keeps upping the stakes and throwing him into games more often, unwittingly making the weapon that would be his doom.
While he enjoys testing him there’s almost a jealousy to it, Tron hasn’t died yet and he hasn’t given in. Surely he must give in , toss aside his ridiculous beliefs and take what’s offered. Why isn’t he taking the obvious path for survival? How dare Tron be better than him. “I broke, why won’t he?” Holding on so tightly to morality when you tossed aside everything for power… how dare he be a better person.
Sark treats Tron as a plaything while acknowledging how powerful he is as an adversary. (The match we saw him in was 4-1) He battles with wanting to kill him outright and wanting to face him himself. It took most of his resources to capture Tron- going against him would be a actual challenge, as we see in the beginning of the movie he’s getting bored.
While they share combat prowess their thought process could not be more different. Everything that he’s put Tron through has only succeeded in strengthening his beliefs. Where Sark thinks he should break down , he sees confirmation of the User’s power. It’s fascinating (I really recommend the novelization- that’s my thing at this point lol but it adds a lot).
Chosen warriors-
It’s easy to forget that Sark too is a gods chosen warrior. The MCP is a god to him and on the path to literally becoming one in their world with the power it accumulates. He has been bolstered up and admired by his side, though his position is one built more on fear than equal admiration. We see again they’re on the opposite sides of the two extremes.
Tumblr media
The loyalty, drive and sense of justice etc that’s naturally apart of Tron’s code had to be forced into Sark. He had to build upon what was already there, it’s implied that the only reason he’s a command program is the MCP just like Dillinger without it he is nothing. There’s that jealousy when he sees someone else naturally have this sort of power. His belief in the MCP is not inherent , he believed in the Users once and deep down he still does- the new belief comes from where he can gain that power. Like Dillinger he is desperate to get to the top by any means, and he did that. He’d rather die than return to nothingness- a state of unimportance- where as Edward is much more fretful. He doesn’t want to loose what he has but jail still scares him.
He is also physically dependent on the MCP - getting a high from the power and I think now he has to get a constant stream to survive. The amount put into him on a regular basis is far to much for a regular program to take in and keep online… if he stops getting it I can only imagine. He’s being held captive by his god and I think he can resent Tron for that- for still having the “pure” relationship with his.
Power, fear and relevance-
I talked about it above with how Sark has done everything in his want for power tossing away all morality for the sake of being important. It makes me wonder what his original function was, with the way he is I can imagine it being a good position but not enough for him. He relishes in the destruction of User believers and finds crushing them on the game grid entertaining, again to parallel Dillinger taking others work, crushing and absorbing smaller companies into Encom with glee.
Tron is a direct threat to that importance, that position and acclaim he had destroyed so many for. He was loyal! He did all that he was asked and here struts in a program naturally strong and exacting— he knows if Tron ever chose to join them he is done for yet his pride and curiosity keep him from outright killing him to save his own skin (how unlike him in any other circumstance).
This fear doesn’t extend to Alan as Ed is well aware… good guys rarely win in the real world. He’s cocky, he knows a guy like that is a straight shooter, he follows the rules and wouldn’t dare stoop to his level to stop him. What he didn’t count on was Kevin Flynn.

Some specific thoughts about the bizarre relationship between time inside the Encom system and time outside it...
- In the outside world, Alan talks about Tron as a project he's "working on," as if it's not even finished yet
-(though at another point he described it as "almost ready")
- shortly after that, in User-world time, we see Lora's laser, which Yori is definitely involved in:
Tumblr media
-but then, the same day when Kevin Flynn enters the computer world, it seems (in this context) as if a lot of time passes very suddenly:
- Tron has been locked up for "200 microcycles"
- long enough for his fellow warriors to view him as a sort of legend ("he fights for the Users!")
- though in the novel, it's said that he was developing this reputation even before he was captured!
- Yori, when she appears, has clearly changed role; she no longer seems actively involved in the laser... she's now got what seems to be a mindless soul-sucking job on the Solar Sailer dock
- novel also clarified that yes, this is a change from her previous status, and was caused by the MCP's rule.
- also: Tron and Yori clearly had history together, by the time they met up in the movie. They'd been apart a long time, but before that they'd clearly been a couple even longer. ("Knew you'd escape! They haven't built a circuit that could hold you!" Like she's seen them try and fail to keep him captive several times before!)
- and there's more, if you count the Deleted Scene (which has her saying "not like home, is it?") and the novelization (which actually describes the "home" that the two of them used to have together!)
So--l am somewhat at a loss to even try and imagine a timeline for how this all fits together.
Questions that come up for me:
- if Tron wasn't even a finished project when Dillinger and MCP shut access down, when did all this history happen?
- Was Alan hiding something from Dillinger when he talked about "working on" the Tron program? Had he actually let Tron run around as a not-totally-authorized security program before all this?
- Or does time happen in some non-linear way in the Encom system, like... events out of order? Or memories appearing all at once, instead of being the result of experience over time (the way I suspect it sometimes happens in dreams)?
