NaPoWriMo 2.2- For the Birds
(Prompt: English sonnet that runs from high fashion featuring a flashback and an aviary)
A denim tux will make you foam and froth?
That’s fine, stay with your fashion-addled sense.
When I mix several clashing types of cloth
For all your bluster, you’ve no recompense.
You call me ratchet, dumb, uncouth, naïve,
And other more unsav’ry kinds of words
Well, girl, that’s batshit, and I do believe
Your lame restrictive rules aren’t for the birds!
Those DC zoo-birds are a merry sort
I saw them chortling just the other day
Mallards, warblers, cassowaries sport
Their plumage, in cacophonous array
From Eden, then, we must set forth, restore
They’ll save us from this ghastly fashion war.

Sign in In 1886, after meeting the inventor Thomas Edison in New York, Hawaii’s King Kalakaua enthusiastically began electrifying the grounds of his new residence — and within a year, 325 incandescent lights had the Iolani Palace fully aglow. The king wouldn’t be able to pull off the same feat these days on Maui. Much of the island’s outdoor illumination soon could violate a new ordinance intended to help the island’s winged population. Fines could reach $1,000 a day. The measure restricts outdoor lighting in an effort to keep endangered birds — and Maui has some of the world’s rarest — from crashing into spotlighted buildings. But Bill 21, signed into law last week, is ruffling feathers because its provisions also could keep flagpoles, church steeples, swimming pools and even luaus in the dark. “People have told me they’ve seen birds falling on the ground in town, up country, all over the place,” said the bill’s author, Kelly Takaya King, who chairs the Maui County Council’s Climate Action, Resilience and Environment Committee. Maui is a veritable Eden for species such as the wedge-tailed shearwater, white-tailed tropicbird, brown booby, myna, kiwikiu and nene — the state bird and the world’s rarest goose. The island also is home to some 170,000 people, however, and the new law is pitting the avian paradise against the human one. The ordinance imposes a near-total ban on upward-shining outdoor lighting and limits short-wavelength blue-light content. Similar laws are in effect in many jurisdictions nationwide to protect various local interests, including the night skies in Arizona and the wilderness in New Hampshire. Maui has a more complicated set of priorities. The outdoor light restrictions effectively prohibit nighttime hula dances and luau performances — local cultural signatures. Indoor alternatives are impractical. “Customers do not want to be in a ballroom or enclosed facility — they can go to Detroit and do that,” wrote Debbie Weil-Manuma, the president of a local tourism company, in a letter of opposition. At the same time, Maui is grappling with an invasive species arriving in flocks of up to 35,000 a day: tourists. Local officials are considering caps on hotel and vacation rentals. Birds can be disoriented by artificial light, sometimes confusing it for moonlight, and end up slamming into a building’s windows or circling until exhausted. In a single night in May 2017, 398 migrating birds — including warblers, grosbeaks and ovenbirds — flew into the floodlights of an office tower in Galveston, Tex. Only three survived. This danger is why the Empire State Building in New York City, the former John Hancock Center in Chicago and other landmark skyscrapers now go dark overnight during peak bird migration periods. One tall building. One dark and stormy night. 395 dead birds. Yet, most mass bird fatalities occur in urban centers with tall buildings in high density. Maui is rural, and its kalana, or county office building, is only nine stories tall. Jack Curran, a New Jersey lighting consultant who evaluated the science behind the bill, said the council “clearly didn’t do their homework.” The bill also requires that lighted surfaces be nonreflective, with a matte surface if painted. As the island is coated in compliant black paint, Curran joked, “Maui will wind up looking like Halloween.” Even support for the regulation is fractured. “This bill does provide good benefits,” said Jordan Molina, Maui’s public works director, “but it doesn’t have to do so recklessly.” The new law, he added, will make his office the “blue-light police.” Although the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not oppose the bill, it recommended creating a habitat conservation plan unless the county could devise a foolproof lighting policy. According to public records, the council relied on a single, non-peer-reviewed study funded by an Arizona company, C&W Energy Solutions, that lobbied for the bill. (The county’s attorneys issued a memorandum in July warning of the “potentially serious conflict of interest,” which the council ignored.
) And King’s efforts were propelled in part by conservation groups’ lawsuit alleging that a luxury resort’s lights disoriented at least 15 endangered petrels between 2008 and 2021, resulting in at least one petrel’s death. (By contrast, the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project has focused on the continuing “depredation by feral cats,” which number in the thousands on the island.) Still at issue are the measure’s conflicting exemptions. For example, lights at public golf courses, tennis courts and schools’ athletics events are allowed, but not lights at hotel-owned golf courses or tennis courts. Conventional string lights are permitted for holidays and cultural festivals but must be “fully shielded” for all other uses, including weddings. The county fair is also exempt. So are emergency services and emergency road repairs. The law will inhibit TV and film crews’ night lights, such as those used by “Hawaii Five-O,” “NCIS: Hawai‘i” and “The White Lotus.” The latter was honored in October by the Maui County Film Office for giving the island national and international recognition. To guard migratory birds, Philadelphia plans to cut its artificial lighting that can fatally distract flocks King told local media that compliant lights are widely available online. But when asked recently for online links to such bulbs, her office sent just one — for a bedside night light that can double as an outdoor bug light, although it was unclear whether the bulb meets all of the ordinance’s specifications. “Appropriate lighting is not available,” King then conceded. “We’re hoping it will be in the next few years. When you pass a lot of these environmental laws, you kind of have to go in steps to get them passed.” As passed, the bill explicitly removed exemptions for field harvesting, security lighting at beaches run by hotels or condominiums, safety lighting for water features, motion-sensor lighting, and lighting on state or federal property — including Maui’s harbors and even the runway lights at its airports. Council member Shane Sinenci supported the ultimate provisions. “Our unique biodiversity is what makes us appealing to both visitors and to residents alike,” the Maui News quoted him as saying before the final vote. “We are often underestimating the value of a healthy ecosystem and all the benefits that comes with it.” The law takes effect in July for new lighting and requires existing lighting to be in compliance by 2026. Thunderteers: Oak and Ivory
Summary: It’s a Thursday in the summer of 1776, and the USS Thunderbird is docked in port in New England. For Virgil, it brings him the gift of inspiration, starting with a rare morning off and a warbler…
Word count: 6.7K Characters: Mainly Virgil, but all the brothers are a part of this one Genre: Slice of Life
A/N: You should not need to read Voyage of the USS Thunderbird to understand this story, as this is a separate one-shot simply set in the same universe. For this AU, the Tracy brothers are all officers on the USS Thunderbird, a merchant ship that sails the seas in the late 1700s.
If you would like still to take a gander at Voyage of the USS Thunderbird, links are here. just note it is in WIP status  FF | Ao3
Enjoy! Thanks for giving this universe a read!   Thanks to @gumnut-logic for the birthday challenge and read through, and @godsliltippy and @the-original-sineater for listening to me gripe and being ever so kind about it, and finally to my husband who is, as always, my onsite historian and biggest fan (even if he doesn’t get this whole fanfiction thing).  ---

Port of Eden, 1776 – a Thursday
For a town named Eden, the jagged shoreline up New England in what was the Massachusetts Bay territory boasted more mountainous rock than it did verdant gardens. Past the crags and the low hills, dense forest swathed the land in pine, spruce, maple, and ash, all grown thick, unruly, and uncultivated.
Inland, she was still as wild as she was on the shore, even with the splattering of local settlements along the rivers.  Fishing was robust, lumber was in easy supply, and the townsfolk had even started agricultural trading with their allies.
It made Eden and her neighboring villages highly contested among the peoples of this land for her vigorous resources alone. Just half a day’s journey nor’east was the trading post along the Machias river, where last year local patriots had captured the HMS Margaretta, and a few months later their prize landed their homes razed under the incensed, retaliatory fire of four British ships.
Though, to be fair, the HMS Margaretta had been intending to bring supplies to the Loyalist troops under siege in Boston, and Patriot ideals this far North were both passionate and pervasive. The ire may have had more to do with that than the resources of the region. But, if the British ever did manage to overtake some of the land, it would be a huge hit to the Colonies.
The nearby lumber also made the towns ideal as centers of shipbuilding – and ship repair. That was why the Thunderbird was docked in Eden in the first place after a brief run-in with the British along the coast landed one well-placed cannonball to the Thunderbird’s portside.
As a merchant ship, they’d only carried cotton and fruits, but the British didn’t know that.
While Alan, their young gunner, had fired back, likely completely missing the ship at that distance, Scott had them re-route and head to friendly waters where they’d get back up if, for some reason, the ship decided to pursue. It hadn’t – the warning shot had been just that – but it left a hole in their bird’s side that was a glaring safety hazard, even if it wasn’t crippling.
The Thunderbird still had her speed. But they’d learned not to take safety concerns lightly ever again. For weeks before Gordon’s accident, the foremast yard had been tilting. They hadn’t fixed it then because doing so would’ve taken them off course completely, and it had seemed so small. Gordon had paid the price, even as careful as he always was when it came to rope and sails and the oak of her foundations. It was the first time the sea had taken something from him. And in doing so, it took something from them all, a spark that would never quite be the same again.
But Gordon endured, and Virgil was thankful they still had their light-hearted boatswain with their crew, even if the lilt in his song resonated through the sails with just a bit more intensity than it did before.
The subject of his thoughts groaned beside him as frigid water streamed through the bed of rocks under his back. Virgil had settled himself on a large rock nearby for the purposes of keeping his sketchpad dry as he drew the outline of the warbler flittering among the stones a few feet away. The side of Virgil’s palm was smeared with the dark color of the graphite rod in his left hand, and it had managed to spread to his cheeks sometime during the transposition of the small sea bird onto the page.

finite music
The list is long as he can imagine. Longer than the keyboard on a grand piano, white, black and ivory with heavy and soft and pumped pedals. Small brass wheels on the wooden floor. Like his Siamese cat walking across the the the white keys his memory jumps and dives in an aleatory tuneless fashion, just as music moves from here to there and back again, so memory moves from childhood to 1973 and on to a 21st century afternoon sitting in quarantine, listening. This is certain because he is writing whilst a track he does not recognize is playing on the radio, (after it finishes playing the presenters argue over its comparative lack of merit) his day creaks and laughs at him across the days of forgotten tunes and women whose names he has repressed. The list  is interminable and possible indifferent. (There is a blackbird singing in the sweet chestnut tree, a warbler answers in the leylandia tree.) Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Marilyn Crispell, Red Garland, Aldo Ciccolini, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter. The percussive hands of Cecil Taylor, the romantic ones of Michel Petrucciani, the pure ears of Bill Evans, the middle third of the keyboard minimalism of Mal Waldron (listen to the Seagulls of Kristiansund and relive the summer spent in Sweden). The nameless pianist on the street beneath the round tower in Copenhagen in 1996 quoting from Micheal Nyman. Ahmad Jamal, Ruben Gonzalez, Earl Hines, Pepsi Auer (for Hot House) and Misha Mengelberg for Dolphy’s last date. Sun Ra for the space music. Barenboim for Mozart (Piano Concerto 22&23), Tony Eden for Tokyo who should have played piano for torch singers and not written software. Anthony Braxton who played some wonderfully off the wall piano one day in the Knitting factory. The pianist playing in the Paris bar back in the early 70s, beer on lid, cigarette in mouth playing a close to perfect version of epistrophy with his eyes closed, lost in the space and time between the notes. Then he recovers his memory in the Roundhouse where he is sitting listening to the unit play – Jimmy Lyons on alto blowing up a storm whilst the pianist listens transfixed a smile on his face playing drums on the piano. Cecil Taylor. His girlfriend years later listening to Taylor play said “Hey that’s a quote from Chopin” He laughed delighted. Given the chance he thinks that on his death bed he is going to ask for something sung by Celia Cruz, Sun Ra’s ‘On Jupiter the sky is always blue’ (1980 Hat Hut version) and Cecil Taylor’s Streams. What more could he ask for in a finite universe ?

Fic: Communication
Fandom/pairing: Glee, Kurt/Blaine
Event: December Klaine Fanworks Challenge 2023
Words: ~1000 words
Rating: Teen and up
Summary: Elder Nixon games Blaine an opportunity to stay connected with Kurt.
Notes: This is part of my Mormon!Klaine universe. It takes place after Out of Eden, which I am still in the process of posting to AO3. It’s among the likely possibilities for their future. This takes place after yesterday's post, Paper Boats. Elder Nixon is Warbler Trent. Warning for dysfunctional family dynamics.
* * *
On their way back from an appointment on the south end of town, Elder Nixon turned his bike into the parking lot of the Media Markt and came to a stop at the bike rack.
“What are we doing here?” Blaine asked. “You need a new battery?”
“Nope.” Elder Nixon swung off his bike and parked it into the rack in a single practiced move. “We're getting you a new phone.”
“I don't need a new phone. Mine’s working fine.”
“Not a mission phone. Your own phone. So you can call Elder Hummel.”
Blaine's mouth fell open of its own accord. “But... But... That's against the rules.”
“Regeln, schmegeln,” Elder Nixon replied, which translated roughly to rules, schmules—well, assuming that schmegeln wasn't a real German word, and Blaine didn't think it was. “Come on. Let's go. No dilly dallying. We still need to make our next appointment.”
Blaine followed his companion in a daze. He'd heard of missionaries sometimes keeping secret phones, but it had never occurred to Blaine to do that himself. Partly because it was against the rules—not that Blaine abided by every single rule, but this one seemed fairly harmless and maybe even good, because it kept missionaries focused on their companions for emotional support instead of the outside world. And partly because he was terrible at keeping secrets, as evidenced by him blubbering out the entire story of him and Kurt to Elder Nixon after they got back to the apartment from their proselytizing and paper-boat-making in the park.
As they approached the phone department, Blaine's heart filled with hope. He could talk to Kurt again. He could hear his voice. They could send text messages to each other—stupid, silly, mundane messages that said little on their own, but added up to a connection—a real connection across an ocean of distance.
But.
Blaine tugged Elder Nixon’s sleeve. “I can't.”
“You need help paying for it?”
“No. It's not that. It's...” Don't expect anyone to coddle you, Blaine. You're already going to have it so easy. You're going to be in Germany, one of the richest nations in the world. The food will be great and your electricity will always be on and you'll have clean, running water and a bank card that your brother will keep adding money to even though I've told him not to. It will be nothing like my mission. You're not going to lose forty-two pounds just by accident because you're sick half the time and the other half, all you have to eat is gruel. When I was a missionary, we even had to buy our own name tag, and now they just give it to you. And we had to wait until we were 19, live on our own for a bit and prove we were mature before we could go. The prophet's decision to lower the age to 18 was inspired, of course, but it makes it all the more important that you go into the situation with no expectation of anyone taking care of you. You need to be responsible for yourself. You need to give absolute obedience to your leaders. If you keep your focus one-hundred percent on the mission and not on your own petty wants, it will still challenge you enough to make you into the man God intends you to be.
Blaine had made it so long without his father living inside his head. But with Kurt gone, he was back in there, telling Blaine how to live and what to think and how to feel, making Blaine fearfully aware of what a disappointment he was to his family.
“I need to tough it out,” Blaine said.
Elder Nixon looked skeptical. “Says who?”
“Everyone.”
“Not everyone. I'm not telling you to tough it out, and I'm pretty sure Elder Hummel would be delighted if you didn't tough it out, and I personally know at least a dozen missionaries with their own phones—”
“A dozen? You know that ‘a dozen’ literally means ‘twelve,’ right? It's not just another word for ‘a few.’”
“I know what ‘a dozen’ means, Elder Anderson.”
“Wait. Do you have a phone? I mean, your own one?”
“No. But I don't need one. You do. You're sad and you're heartbroken for no good reason, because the guy who you're heartbroken over is totally in love with you and wants to hear from you.”
“I write him,” Blaine said defensively.
“Look. This isn't like popping caffeine pills or getting addicted to chocolate-covered espresso beans. Those things are harmful. But talking with the people you love? That's a good thing. And if you need me to put it in terms of metrics, Elder Anderson, it's distracting you from the work. I think, if you could actually talk to Elder Hummel, it would make you a better missionary.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It makes perfect sense. Remind me, how many people did you two baptize together?”
“Well, it depends how you count—”
“How many?”
“Eight.”
“Sounds like talking with Elder Hummel makes you a better missionary.”
Blaine knew it was true. He had been a better missionary when he'd been with Kurt. He'd been more loving and patient, and he’d truly been able to listen to people—not like lately, when he missed half the things people said to him because their words got all garbled up in his grief over Kurt and flashbacks to painful conversations with his father.
Elder Nixon patted Blaine’s shoulder. “I'm not going to force you to buy a phone today. But I want you to consider it—not just in your mind, but in your prayers, too. I'll pray about it with you every day if that's what you need.”
Prayer. Elder Nixon was right. That’s what Blaine needed. Prayer was the thing that brought clarity to things. It was the beam from a lighthouse cutting through the fog.
So, without waiting, Blaine closed his eyes right in the middle of Media Markt. He prayed silently to God about his grief and his fear and the memories that shouldn't be so upsetting because they were only words, and they weren't even words that his dad had meant hurtfully—they weren't angry or abusive or belittling or any of the things Blaine had learned in health class to tell a trusted adult about—but still they cut into him like knives, peeling back his defenses and leaving him raw and wounded and never able to heal.
Blaine remembered Jesus with the woman at the well and again with the adultress and again with the little children, and he heard—not in his ears, but deep inside where the Holy Ghost spoke to him—That's not the way I love. I love with open arms.
Blaine opened his eyes. “I should get a smartphone, right? The messaging would be cheaper that way.”
Elder Nixon smiled.

SEYCHELLES ISLANDS: 6 GREAT REASONS TO VISIT
Have you been to the Seychelles before? There are numerous reasons why they are such a trip of a lifetime, including their white sand beaches, beautiful sceneries, and filled with the best all-inclusive honeymoon resorts spread across 115 islands.
What Makes The Seychelles So Special?
The Seychelles are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa that are among the most beautiful in the world. The Seychelles' main attractions, which draw nearly 360,000 visitors each year, are listed below.
Seychelles Nature
Nearly half of the Seychelles' landmass is protected as a national park or reserve, home to a diverse range of uncommon species. The eggs of hawksbill turtles can be safely laid during the day in the Seychelles, unlike in many other regions of the world where they can be grabbed by predators. The Seychelles warbler bird and the Red Fody with their colorful plumage should be seen by visitors to the islands.
Seychelles Scuba Diving
The Seychelles' watersports are second to none, and there's plenty of marine life to see whether you're scuba diving or snorkeling. The diversity is astonishing, with six national marine parks strewn among the islands. For plentiful coral and reef fish, go to Baie Ternay, and for humphead parrotfish and hawksbill turtles, go to Curieuse. The temperature can reach 29°C with visibility of nearly 30 meters at times!
After a day of diving, rest, relax and enjoy a refreshing experience at Sesel Spa, one of Seychelles' resorts best spas. In the Seychelles, there are various resorts that offer spa treatments. Their outstanding service, on the other hand, is what sets them apart. Discover the actual essence of being at one with the elements by exploring the healing components found in nature.
Cooking in the Creole Style
The Seychelles are known for their Coco de Mer coconuts, but the Creole cuisine is just as tasty. Fish baked in banana leaves, coconut curries, grilled octopus, and red snapper dishes are all worth trying. Another common element is breadfruit, which can be served savory or sweet. There are various local beers to choose from, or you could try palm wine.
Events in the Seychelles
In the Seychelles, they know how to party, and if you can arrange your visit to coincide with the International Carnival of Victoria, do so. It takes place every year in mid-April. The Festival Kreol, which honors Creole roots, takes place in October, while the Seychelles Ocean Festival takes place in early December. In addition, the Seychelles Sailing Cup takes place in January, while the International Fishing Competition takes place in November.
Visitors can enjoy viewing typical tea plantations and Hindu temples at any time of year, including Victoria's Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple. Whenever you want to visit the island book your Rooms & Suites in Seychelles at the Fishermans Cove Resort, the best beach resort in Mahe, Seychelles.
Guests can retreat to their comfortable rooms and suites in the hotel's main structure, which is located towards the back of the property. Melt into the king-size beds and relax in the cool comfort of the open-plan rooms, which are equipped with all of the necessities. Two people and one infant can be accommodated in each room. all for the game glee au???
this is the best ask i’ve ever gotten and im so sorry its been in my drafts for so long
nothing changes but instead of exy everyone is obsessed with singing?
colleges have elite acapella groups
the foxes are obviously the new directions
the ravens are the warblers (the colours match up too well)
i mean the moriyamas and the wesninskis are still gangs, that doesn’t change, but instead of a world class exy player, neil was supposed to become a renowned musical artist
which brings us to his backstory. his mother still took him and ran, she still died, and neil went to millport and joined their acapella/glee club
hernandez thought neil was too talented to be there, and called wymack about him, almost begging him to take him on, and he so he did even after neil turned him down a total of five times
the first time neil meets andrew, andrew is still wary of him, the way neil looks at kevin and how obviously skittish he is
it annoys him to no end
but instead of taking him to edens twilight, he makes neil sing a duet with him instead, so he can determine what kind of person he is
people quickly realise two things:
neil’s voice is heavenly
he and andrew have a perfect harmony, which disgusts aaron but nicky and renee think it’s a nice addition to the team
of course this makes them the foxes’ secret weapon at competitions
when neil ‘learns who the moriyamas are’ and is forced to sell his half truths to andrew, making promises he know he can’t keep, his world tips a little
all he wants to do is sing, and he knows he should’ve stayed at millport but he can’t bring himself to regret this opportunity
then comes kathy’s show, and riko makes sly little jabs at kevin the entire time, and when neil can’t take it anymore he opens his big mouth and wipes the smile off of riko’s face like he’s just slapped him - sealing seth’s fate
the show also features a live performance from ‘last year’s championship winners’ in which they sing this to mock and relate to kevin that they don’t need him, and their offer to take him back has been revoked
the foxes look disgusted the entire time, dan with her arms across her chest like, really?
andrew looks about ready to straight up riko in the middle of his big solo
but let’s face it, this whole thing is a backdrop so that when riko invites (forces) neil to evermore, neil settles the score once and for all and in an effort to make riko admit to having seth killed and that he organised drake showing up at nicky’s house or thanksgiving, they sing this (neil is santana, obviously), which tells neil all he needs to know

Why The Seychelles are a Dream Destination…
Have you ever been to the Seychelles? Famous for their white sand beaches and natural wonders spread across 115 islands, there are many reasons why they are such a dream destination…
Culinary delights
The Seychelles are renowned for their distinctive Coco de Mer coconuts but the Creole cooking is equally delicious. Try the fish baked in banana leaves, coconut curries, grilled octopus and red snapper dishes. Breadfruit is another popular ingredient, prepared savoury or sweet. Drinks wise, there are several local beers or you might like the palm wine.
Cultural attractions
They know how to party in the Seychelles and if you can possibly time your visit to coincide with the International Carnival of Victoria then definitely do. The next one will be held from 22-24 April 2018. Festival Kreol celebrates Creole heritage and will take place from 23 to 29 October 2017, while the Seychelles Ocean Festival will be held at the beginning of December. There’s also the Seychelles Sailing Cupin January and the International Fishing Competition in November. Visitors at any time of year will enjoy seeing typical tea plantations and Hindu temples including Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple in Victoria.
Luxurious getaway
From secluded private islands to family-friendly villas, Seychelles holidays offer a range of different accommodation options. Honeymooners are spoilt for choice with a range of luxurious hotels and spa fans will appreciate the range of different wellness activities. If you have several weeks, consider a two centre stay and island-hopping from Mahé to La Digue or Praslin.
Nature in abundance
Almost 50% of the landmass in the Seychelles is a national park or reserve, with many rare species. Unlike in many parts of the world where the eggs of hawksbill turtles can be snatched by predators, they can safely lay them during the day in the Seychelles. Visitors to the islands should keep a look out for the Seychelles warbler bird and the Red Fody with its colourful plumage.
Watersports paradise
The diving in the Seychelles is second to none and whether you prefer scuba diving or snorkelling, there’s plenty of marine life to spot. With 6 national marine parks dotted around the islands, the diversity is impressive. Head to Baie Ternay for the abundant coral and reef fish and to Curieuse for the humphead parrotfish and hawksbill turtles. At times, the temperature can reach 29ºC with visibility over 30 metres!
White sand beaches
Of course, we couldn’t finish without mentioning those pristine white sand beaches again! I’m dreaming of being on this one right now. Some of the best beaches can be found on the islands of Praslin and La Digue. It was once thought that the Seychelles were the location of the Garden of Eden, and the shoreline here is certainly heavenly.
Know before you go
Environment – collecting seashells is prohibited in marine parks and nature reserves. A certificate is required for all flora.
Money – credit cards, in particular MasterCard/Access and Visa are widely accepted. There are ATM facilities at some banks as well as at the airport on Mahé and Praslin. The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee.
Plug sockets: 240 volts AC, 50Hz
Tipping – not obligatory as a 5-10% service charge is generally already included by taxis, hotels and restaurants.
Weather – the Seychelles have a tropical climate, so it’s pleasant all year round. If you’re keen on swimming, diving and snorkelling then April to May and October to November are ideal. Those who enjoy sailing will appreciate the light winds from May to September.
We hope that we’ve inspired you to visit the Seychelles and if you have been already, we’d love to hear your tips for first time visitors!

How Beauty Drives Evolution
New Post has been published on http://ourplanetary.com/how-beauty-drives-evolution/
How Beauty Drives Evolution
“Survival of the Fittest.” Although Darwin failed to come up with that word, it has come to define his principle of evolution: that traits that improve a species’ odds of staying alive are particularly favored to be handed on. (Consider the Galápagos finches, whose beaks have changed over time to crack open one of a kind types of seeds.) But in The Evolution of Beauty, ornithologist Richard O. Prum argues that superficial dreams play a role as properly.
Beauty Drives
Take, as an example, the male membership-winged manakin, a hen whose ornate feathers have developed to supply a “song” at the same time as they fly (thanks to a sequence of bumps that vibrate inside the wind) that draws women. Far from making them more fit, those feathers — and the bigger bones required to help them — surely gradual the manakins down, suggesting that, as Prum concludes, animal splendor standards “may be as irrational, unpredictable and dynamic” as our own.
Hello From Ontario – A Driving Tour Along the Niagara Escarpment Although I love the metropolis the summer usually makes me itch to get out into the USA. So I knew as up my friend Karel with whom I had helped organize a convention a few years ago and requested him if he could mind getting together in his neck of the woods close to Burlington for a country using a tour of the Niagara Escarpment. Since we had now not seen every other for more than one years it turned into an extremely good opportunity to trap up and enjoy a stunning power on the same time.
So we met this morning on a car parking zone just off Guelph Line within the north give up of Burlington. I parked my car and off we drove in Karel’s convertible. We drove north into the green nation-state and up a slope to get to our first destination: a nature vicinity called the Mount Nemo Conservation Area. We parked the automobile and walked about 15 minutes eastwards through a woodland till we reached a steep cliff and a lookout factor that supplied a lovely a hundred and eighty diploma view over the rolling farm u. S . That became sprawling some distance beneath us.
The Niagara Escarpment is a geological formation that extends from western New York State through Ontario to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It originated due to unequal erosion wherein a top layer of harder and more resistant dolomitic limestone overlays more without difficulty eroded shale. The slow erosion of the shale leaves at the back of cliffs of resistant cap rock. The limestone itself stems from a historical tropical sea and includes a number of the most amazing fossils of the Ordovician-Silurian geological technology.
Beauty Tips
In Ontario, the Niagara Escarpment functions the Bruce Trail: Canada’s oldest and longest footpath that extends over 800 km (with aspect trails) from Niagara Falls within the South to Tobermory inside the north. The whole vicinity has been unique a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve due to its particular fauna and plant life. The Bruce Trail itself is marked by way of white blazes (white markings about 8 cm excessive and 3 cm wide) and is maintained by the Bruce Trail Association whilst aspect trails are marked with blue blazes.
One of the Niagara Escarpments distinguishing capabilities are the many lookout factors at the rocky outcroppings over an otherwise as an alternative flat location. In addition, the Niagara Escarpment has dozens of waterfalls wherein streams and rivers tumble over the limestone cliffs. The most well-known of those waterfalls is of route Niagara Falls which is also accessible on a facet trail from the Bruce Trail.
The Niagara Escarpment’s particular natural environment consists of many bird species (some of them endangered) along with the Bald Eagle, the Red-Shouldered Hawk, the Black Tern and the Hooded Warbler. Rare reptiles and amphibians also stay in the region, for instance, the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake and the North Dusky Salamander. 37 species of orchids have been observed within the northern components of the Escarpment, along with the Calypso Orchid, the Ram’s-head Lady Slipper and Alaska Rein Orchid. Considering that approximately 7 million people live within close proximity the organic range on this specific location is remarkable.
We started out walking on a trail right at the threshold of a cliff and Karel knowledgeable me that the Niagara Escarpment is extraordinarily popular with rock climbers. I wanted to take a good photo of the cliffs and crevices, however, my fear of heights and the shear vertical drop avoided me from exploring the very edge of the cliff. The many caves also are famous with spelunkers. We walked about 20 minutes northwards and had a beautiful view toward Rattlesnake Point, every other rocky outcrop along the Niagara Escarpment. Then we took an aspect path returned via the forest to the automobile parking space and continued our drive.
About ten mins further north we stopped at the village of Lowville to have a take a look at Lowville Park. The Sixteen Mile Creek slowly meanders via the park and nature trails department off from the parking lot vicinity. Right subsequent to the park is the Lowville Bistro, a lately renovated restaurant that gives upscale informal eating, a licensed out of doors patio, an ice cream parlor and take-out. The city itself dates back to the early 1800s and was advanced after the Mississauga Land Purchase. The descendants of a number of those early settlers nonetheless live in the village today. 36 historical buildings and a Pioneer Cemetery still undergo witness to this as soon as a thriving rural community.
Leaving Lowville behind we headed directly north to any other conservation region inside the Halton Region Conservation System: Crawford Lake features a so-called meromictic lake, a deep frame of water where distinct layers of water do no longer intermix. This creates an oxygen-poor surroundings that aren’t conducive to dwelling organisms. As an end result, archeologists are capable of drill center samples of soil from the lake mattress that date again several centuries. One of those drillings caused the invention of corn pollen and the realization that there has been as soon as an Indian village within the region. Subsequent archeological digs showed the presence of a native settlement.
A fifteenth century pre-touch Iroquoian Village has been reconstructed on its original website and capabilities timber longhouses that comprise sound asleep quarters, a fire pit and garage areas for equipment, animal hides, and meals. Guides offer motives of the lifestyle of the Iroquois tribes that inhabited this area. This conservation vicinity is a famous vacation spot for faculty children and summer season camps and throughout our go to numerous groups of young people have been taking part in themselves inside the grassy regions in front of the lengthy homes.
Evolution vs Creation
The Niagara Escarpment is simply complete of blanketed nature areas, and just 10 mins north of the village of Campbellville is any other nature place: the Hilton Falls Conservation Area features first-rate trekking, mountain cycling, and move-u. S . A . Ski trails in the place. More than 30 km of forest trails weave their manner around the Hilton Falls Reservoir and a 10-metre high waterfall cascade over the Niagara Escarpment. Across the road from Hilton Falls is the Kelso / Glen Eden Conservation Area whose highlights consist of a sandy seashore in addition to 22 kilometers of trails for mountain bikers and 12 slopes for downhill skiers.
We persevered our pressure south to the Town of Milton, which consistent with the 2006 Census, is the quickest growing network in Canada. The population of Milton has grown by means of more than 70% between 2001 and 2006 and stands approximately 56,000 humans now. Milton dates lower back to the 1820s when English settlers Jasper Martin and his spouse Sarah had been granted 100 acres of land from the Crown.
Martin built a grist mill alongside Sixteen Mile Creek and also created a pond, Mill Pond, which continues to be in lifestyles nowadays and has to emerge as a popular pastime place for nearby citizens with its taking walks trails and the gazebo that overlooks the water.
Main Street in downtown Milton still speaks of its Victorian historical past, vintage City Hall, the Post Office Building and numerous other church buildings and secular homes date lower back to the mid to late 1800s. Many restaurants and cafés have sprung up in the downtown center which beckons traffic to sit down and loosen up on a number of their outside patios.
From the quaint town of Milton, we headed northwest in the direction of a small village called Aberfoyle, north of Highway 401. Karel cautioned that we’ve launched at the neighborhood Aberfoyle Mill, an actual mill that becomes converted into a restaurant in 1966. Aberfoyle itself became first settled within the 1840s and is famous for its Aberfoyle Spring Water.
The Aberfoyle Mill itself become constructed with the aid of a Scottish immigrant by means of the call of George McLean in 1859 and even won a gold medal for its oatmeal at the 1867 World’s Fair in Pairs. After stopping operations within the late Twenties the mill became bought with the aid of the Owens own family in 1960 who then spent six years renovating it and turning it into one of the most particular country restaurants in Canada.
Australia’s Great Ocean Road lies in Victoria and changed into constructed among 1919 and 1932. The road is dedicated to the Australian squaddies who died inside the First World War. The development of the 285 km lengthy road gave employment to the squaddies who returned from the war and to the those who have become unemployed during the Great Depression that accompanied.
Stunning perspectives In spite of the closely forested and mountainous place, the Great Ocean Road has been manually dug up alongside the curved coastline between Torquay and Warrnambool, leaving steep cliffs to one side one the street and really slender parts. Fortunately, there are masses of spots where you may stop to experience the beautiful perspectives.
Endless Coastline It’s a beautiful force, particularly wherein the street follows the shoreline through the forests of the Otway National Park, the coastal fringe of Angahook-Lorne State Park and the entire length of Port Campbell National Park. Don’t pass over out on Lake Corangamite and the Princess Margaret Rose Caves.
The Shipwreck Coast The Great Ocean Road runs alongside the coastline for quite a protracted stretch. Port Campbell National Park is a part of this impressive stretch and also referred to as Shipwreck Coast, named after the at least eighty ships which crashed alongside the rugged shoreline.
Twelve Apostles Near Port Campbell, twelve famous sea stacks get up from the ocean: the Twelve Apostles. These dramatic rock formations wherein fashioned via high winds and large waves as a result of violent storms. The Twelve Apostles were once part of the limestone cliffs alongside the coastline. Through millennia of erosion, they now stand proudly on my own in the ocean.
