my supervisor AND my manager both aren't in today so I'm just practicing shit... im boored

#ive done 2 rounds of free fatty acid titration + gonna do a round of dh spectophotometry this afternoon to mix it up... #i was meant to be working more on emc w my supervisor but cant do it without her here so. we wait #i mean its not that boring i like doing the actual work. but theres just so much waiting inbetween stages #and its not a long enough length of time to go do anything else so i just have to stand around and look busy.. #yawwwn. wish i had more to do to distract me from thinking im fighting for my life defending the mental fort against le depression #tis the season innit. its weird bc on some levels im doing far better this year than i have the past few years like im managing it rly well #mainly through heavy control of how im allowing myself to talk + think abt things im trying to nip anything -ve in the bud #prevention is better than having to drag my limp cold body back out of that hole #but also at the same time. there are things im deeply dissatisfied with + cause me a lot of pain to think abt #which im having to shelve bc most of them are beyond my ability to solve. or just take time/alternative environments #and also bc ik that this time of year i dont have the mental tools or energy to dedicate towards solving anything complex #so im just. very detached from how i feel. locking that shit in the back of the freezer until spring. what can u do yknow #at least i have a job to keep me busy and make me too tired to think in the evenings. im surfing this shit fine for now #OKAY five more mins and i can take this stuff out of the incubator and go to lunch woohoo #this rambling is what HAPPENS when i dont have enough to do at work. smfh #.diaries

A not-complete list of wonderful changes, translation and localization I noticed when I went to see Book of Mormon in Madrid!

Hey! So I went to see The Book of Mormon last month in Madrid, and since I had watched (bootlegged) and listened to the original production, I was able to enjoy some changes they made so it could be enjoyed by spanish audiences!

First off, I should say that it wasn’t a replica production (and I think I much prefer this one!). The choreography was amazing, and definitely more elaborate than on broadway ! Here, have a look: https://youtu.be/NZ5UxjN2MPs?si=UErYQUODo5Qs-EMC

Some of the first changes I wondered how they were going to make was the opening number: both Hello and Hola have the same syllables but hola cannot be used, since the accent falls on the first syllable in hola and the second in hello….. so spanish mormons just end up saying how are you (¿qué tal?) 😂

Second change comes during the second number, two by two: one of the jokes is weirdly untranslatable, which is the addendum at the end of the phrase “we are the soldiers of the church of jesus christ (of latter day saints)”. Since in spanish “of la-tter day saints” (5 syllables) would be “de los úl-ti-mos dí-as” (7 syllables), they changed it to “yo-soy-mor-món” (i am a mormon) which fits! There is a joke lost, but mormonism isn’t as widespread as it is on the US, so it’s hardly noticeable.

This one is mostly to update the content, but during two by two when the trip to japan gets announced, the mormons are excited about soy sauce and godzilla (instead of mothra)

Next comes a change i also wondered about: how do you make a joke out of Elder Price’s wish to go to Orlando, of all things? In the English version, Elder Price would like to go to orlando because of Sea World, Disney and putt-putt golfing: spaniards have no cultural knowledge of what Orlando is, so the translated line is “Orlando! Disney me espera, soy fan de Frozen” (Orlando! Disney is waiting for me, I’m a Frozen fan) which really drives home the ridiculousness of choosing that place as your mission trip. Also, if you watch the video i linked, the joke is super amplified through choreography, which is part of why i love this production so much.

Hasa diga eebowai gets one change Very right: instead of saying fuck you god, they say “me cago en dios” (i shit on god) which is a very common way of cursing about things in spain: you can shit on the milk (me cago en la leche), on your mother (me cago en tu madre) and indeed, you can shit on god!

One fun localization comes in at the end of All-American prophet, a song that’s basically a sales pitch or infomercial : the fun little gag at the end where Elder Cunningham says “if you order now, we’ll also throw a seat of steak knives” gets changed to “if you order now, we’ll throw in a thermomix for free” For people who don’t know, a thermomix is The Product everyone gets from infomercials/ through independent sellers: it’s a chopper/blender/cooker/scale/kitchen robot, very convenient! My mother has one :) one of the ugandan ladies asks Cunningham about the thermomix inmediatly after finishing the number and he excitedly begins explaining the whole shtick every middle aged spanish lady has heard before, that got a big laugh :)

In the sequence before spooky mormon hell dream, when Elder Price’s so happy that he finally reaches Orlando, he throws in another elsa joke, saying that he’s blonde like her, so thats why she likes her😂

During Spooky mormon hell dream, one change that got Such a big laugh was seeing the four people that are in hell according to Elder Price: Genghis Khan, Hitler, Jeffrey Dahmer and, instead of Jonnie Cochran (idk even who he is) we got Silvio Berlusconi, politician and founder of communications company Mediaset, which runs a thrash tv channel called Telecinco (and that’s what he’s in hell for, according to the song)

The thing elder cunningham always says “tomorrow’s a latter day” gets changed to a saying a lot of catholic old people say, “mañana dios dirá” which both fits in the metric and localizes it, since mormonism isn’t that well known.

And that’s it! It was such a wonderful performance, and a testament to the beauty of translation: even if i know I understand English fairly well, seeing the jokes on my native language made everything 100x times funnier! Strongly recommend!

Who leads the discussion? Who takes notes? Who brings snacks? Who shit talks everyone at the table? Who keeps everyone on topic? And who ends up the errand boy at the end of the day because of their runty bottom energy?

Abraham - makes it almost impossible for everyone to stay on topic, by repeatedly challenging people around the table to arm wrestle.

Aemond - leads the discussion, but not keen to listen to anyone else's opinion - in his mind, his thoughts are the only ones that are correct, so they're the only ones worth hearing.

Billy Taylor - dutifully smiles and nods and takes minutes. Keeps looking up and getting confused and losing his place though - unsure if he should be jotting down every time Abraham offers an arm wrestle.

Billy Washington - feels thoroughly inferior to everyone else, agrees with everything the person he thinks has most authority says (Aemond)

Ettore - doesn't really understand why he's supposed to be there. Keeps quiet and eats snacks. Pick pockets everyone on his way out.

Genyen - tries and fails to keep the peace with the more problematic people. Is thoroughly enjoying the snacks that he helped Osferth put together and is on tea making duty.

Osferth - made snacks for everyone. Makes immediate friends with Genyen. Has quite a lot to say, but keeps getting interrupted by Aemond. Threatens to "smite" him, but things are quickly deescalated by Genyen.

Poacher - doesn't say much. Has brought venison jerky for everyone, but it smells, so it's been left in a tupperware and put in a corner of the room where it can cause the least offence.

Tom Bennett - argues with everything everyone else says just for the fun of it, and sits there smirking when they get annoyed with him. Continuously derails the discussion with his frequent cigarette breaks.

I want to upgrade my areopress+coffee knowledge…n feelin’ lost ! I have just dipped my toes in the world of coffee, and holy shit. It’s a lot. Pretty much all I know is..how coffee beans are produced. Methods, elevations, ect. I seem to shy away from natural washed?Anyways. i have been using the aero press exclusively for about five years. I’m very much used to whatever the hell flavor profile that creates. I do the inverted method with a cheap grinder and kettle. I feel like the beans I buy, are too quality for my set up. But I could be off with the beans too. Using beans from templecoffee.comWhat do I upgrade first? What the hell flavor does an aero press create? Would I upgrade with an espresso machine? I do have a hand grinder but ya girls arms just can’t keep doing that either. I add a tablespoon or so of cream to my coffee. Enjoying a milky latte once in a while would be amazing, having a milk frother isn’t a must. Thinking about a latte everyday makes my stomach hurt..So far. I’ve read good things about; the df64, prismo, flair 58, nanopresso, Diletta, EMC, Ascaso and quick mill. Are any of these machines good for beginners with the taste of aeropress? So I'm reading dgm fanfics and I find the Timothy and Allen tag and look at it (I'm very sad there are only 14 works they have such a cute sibling bond smh)

But one fic ended with Allen teaching Timothy how to cheat at cards(ending with them both asleep and Link waking up to them at the table with cards scattered)

Nd now I have the cutest image in my mind

During Timothy's time at The Black Order when Allen is still there Timothy asks Allen about e v e r y t h i n g. Someone pointed out that Timothy is really close to Allen judging from the pictures and what not so I just imagine Allen teaching Timothy everything he knows. Especially with cards. (Those two become a terrifying duo with cards)

Timothy and Allen are both parasite types and Allen is only 7 or 8 years older than Timothy so ofc they would get along. (Especially bc Allen can really act like the kid he never got to be at times)

The both have so much in common and Timothy is probably so upset when Allen is called a traitor and disappears from the order. I just want art and fics where the two are just being adorable siblings. Give me modern au with no Akuma but all the bonds are the same, the Noah family just being an annoyance to everyone else or something. Literally I just want fics of Timothy and Allen bonding

How badass was this fight? The voice of the Mobirates was having a hard time keeping up with the transformations, that’s how quickly they were cycling through them. And yet, all 34 prior series did get represented in that sequence.
