“Die Mörder sind unter uns” (”The Murderers Are Among Us”)
After the Second World War physician Dr. Hans Mertens (Ernst Wilhelm Borchert) returns to Berlin. He is traumatized of what he suffered, is unable to return to his job and starts to drink heavily. In a bombed out apartment he meets the former tenant Susanne Wallner (Hildegard Knef), who was imprisoned under the Nazi regime. The young woman gives the emotionally injured man new hope, and a tender love grows between the two of them. But then Mertens learns that his former superior officer Ferdindand Brückner (Arno Paulsen) was not killed in the war, as Mertens thought, but instead is now a buisnessman who runs a successful firm and has not the least sense of guilt. Mertens witnessed how the former Hauptmann Brückner ordered to kill 36 men, 54 women and 31 children as an act of "retaliation" during the war. The massacre took place on Christmas 1942. On Christmas 1945 Mertens is determined to to kill the war criminal ...
"Die Mörder sind unter uns" ("Murderers among us") was the first German movie, that was filmed after the Second World War and it was also the first film of the East German film company DEFA. Director Wolfgang Staudte (1906 - 1984), who is regarded as one of the most important directors in German film history after the Second World War, was not allowed to make his film in the Western sectors of Berlin. Only the Russian administration granted him permission to do so. The film premiered in 1946 and was immediately a huge success both with critics and audience. When it comes to the visual design, Wolfgang Staudte was clearly oriented towards the cinema of the Weimar Republic and thus created a visual contrast to the German film art discredited by the Nazis at that time. "Die Mörder sind unter uns" is a masterpiece of German film art.
Hildegard Knef (1925 - 2002) became a big movie star after this role while her fellow actor Ernst Wilhelm Borchert (1907 - 1990) was one of Germanys most renowned stage actors and voice actors.

DIE MORDER SIND MIT UNS - (Wolfgang Staudte, 1946)
Tumblr media
Die Mörder sind unter uns, a German film known in English as Murderers Among Us in the United States or The Murderers Are Among Us in the United Kingdom) was the first Trümmerfilm (ruins movie). It was produced in 1945 and 1946 in the Althoff-Atelier in Babelsberg and in Jofa-Ateliers in Johannisthal. It was written and directed by Wolfgang Staudte.
Berlin in 1945 after Germany's defeat in the war. The former military surgeon Dr. Hans Mertens (Ernst Wilhelm Borchert) returns home from the battlefield to find his home destroyed. He suffers from the terrible memories of the war and becomes an alcoholic. A photographer and Nazi concentration camp survivor, Susanne Wallner (Hildegard Knef), finds him living in her apartment as she returns home and they become roommates and even friends. Eventually, Mertens meets his former captain Ferdinand Brückner (Arno Paulsen), who had been responsible for the shooting of a hundred civilians on Christmas Eve of 1942 in a Polish village on the Eastern Front. He is now a successful businessman, producing pots out of old Stahlhelme, the German military steel helmet. On Christmas Eve, Mertens plans to kill him, but Wallner stops him at the last minute. They decide to have Brückner put on trial then, and the two start a new life together.
The movie is both a German passionate “conscience examination” concerning its own Nazi past and one of the very first signifying movies of that cinema after the war. The production should face a series of “enormous” logistical difficulties: the great parts of the scenes were shot in some locations of the semi-destroyed ex-studios of UFA (now changed in DEFA by the occupying Soviet forces), and the same Soviets wanted the final of the movie (that should be much more dramatic) changed in an optimistic way. But, despite an excess of pathos and some mechanicalness in the narrative structure, the movie has moments of great intensity, mainly in the sequences filmed among the ruins of a ghostlike Berlin, yet completely destroyed and photographed by a “terrible” B&W that clearly recalls the Expressionism.
Murderers Among Us debuted on October 15, 1946 in the Admiralspalast, which was at the time the home of the Berlin State Opera, in the Soviet sector. The television debut in the German Democratic Republic was on November 1, 1955 and in the Federal Republic on November 18, 1971.
