THEY DON'T KNOW A THING ABOUT THE RAIN CLOUDS daring charming x gn!rebel!reader ➤ summary: Daring is alone, stuck in a place where no one really understands him. Funnily enough, you know how that feels, maybe the two of you can be lonely together.
OR
Daring: I’ve never had a friend before. Reader: It’s okay, I’ll be your friend. Daring: ...I’ve never had a partner before either.
➤ notes: i got an idea and dumped a bunch of baggage on this guy! only gendered term used is daring referring to reader with "partner" (romantically) ➤ warnings: just a bit generally sad in the beginning, daring has troubles with like self worth and no one Genuinely liking him
It's not obvious that Daring is lonely. He's painfully popular, he has friends, he had a girlfriend until a 'mutual' breakup a couple weeks ago — which means he's now got dozens of princes and princesses lining up in the hopes of being the next —, and he's close with his siblings, whom he cares about very much. He should be perfectly not lonely; an ideal person with an ideal life everyone should strive for.
So really, with someone so 'obviously' perfect, who's constantly surrounded by friends and admirers alike, it should be no surprise just how lonely he is.
It shows in the cracks, in the seams of his perfectly stitched clothes, when he stands in front of his bedroom mirror late at night while his roommate is elsewhere, and just stares.
There's nothing wrong with him, he whispers, but something is still not right.
He realises slowly it's because his life is so superficial.
People love him because he's a charming, a dashing prince destined for amazing adventures of legendary heroics, not for the boy who makes jokes he really does think are rather clever, or for the genuinely thoughtful nature hidden just beneath his shining jacket and standoffish demeanour. People only laugh at his jokes because he's Daring Charming, because he's popular.
He asked his friends once what they thought of a certain joke he'd made, and not a single one could say anything genuine, none of them even really understood it, they just laughed because Daring Charming was saying it.
Apple only ever dated him because she was meant to, because it was her destiny. She's sweet, she's kind, but none of it was ever truly real, she never truly — beneath all the responsibilities and feeling like she had to — wanted to be with him.
Daring feels a sort of pit in his stomach when he thinks about Apple. She was his first girlfriend, his first kiss, but none of it was true. If he thinks about it long enough, none of it ever mattered to her like it did to him. And every time he realises this, he quickly buries it. Guilt. Apple is a good person, truly. It's not her fault. Truly.
Daring can't look at all the people tripping over their own feet for him the same anymore, all he sees are people bound by the same thing that brought Apple to him; they think they should be with a Charming. None of them want to be with him for him.
He reminds himself anyone would trade everything they have to be him, to live his life, to have such a 'perfect' fairytale waiting for them, so he's not allowed to feel sad, he's not allowed to hate this life as much as he does. He needs to be grateful, because his life is wonderful, his life is perfect.
Daring has grown to hate perfection, deep down in his stomach during dark sleepless nights and the spaces between breaths, hidden in places where he allows it — just for a moment — because he thinks that there, it can do no harm, there it doesn't make him a bad, ungrateful, person.
It was too late to turn back when he was faced with the fact that his whole life had become solely those moments.
He hadn't even been the one to realise it, to look around and see his growing isolation, to see the dimness in his eyes, the shadow following him around like a miserable storm cloud. It had been you.
You, someone with a destiny that had nothing to do with him, nothing to do with princes or princesses at all.
You, a rebel, who never befriended someone you didn't want to, who made connections with your classmates not out of necessity but genuine curiosity.
You, who didn't always laugh at Daring's jokes like everyone else did, but always smiled. Even if you thought what he said was dumb or unfunny, there would always still be a soft look on your face with your lips upturned, for you recognised the playful glimmer in his eyes and couldn't help but be happy that he was happy.
You, who was the first and only to notice he was no longer okay, and immediately checked on him like he imagines a true friend would.
Daring only just realises he's been rambling, been saying anything that comes to mind, and just telling you everything. He can't decide whether this feels freeing or mortifying.
"...And now I'm here..." Daring mutters, avoiding eye contact with you from where you sit beside him.
You don't say anything for a moment, and he's scared he's lost you, when you tentatively rest your hand on his where it's placed on his knee.
If Daring wasn't so scared of you laughing in his face and telling everyone how pathetic he is, he'd register the slightest uptick in his heartbeat, or the way he inexplicably wants to shuffle closer to you. But for now his face is just the slightest bit warmer for a reason he refuses to acknowledge.
"I don't want to say I understand," You finally speak up, voice soft and thumb tracing comforting circles on the back of Daring's hand, "Because I don't exactly, considering I'm not..." A prince, a princess, or even just royalty.
You see the slightest nod from Daring, telling you he understands, and you take it as a sign to continue.
"But, I get what it's like to... to feel like your life isn't your own, like no one around you is genuine or... Real?... I know what that's like."
Daring feels something deep in his chest, a spark and a murmur, something that draws him to you, and he finally understands that you're like him. You see him for who he is, and he sees you.
You're struggling to say it, words hesitant and unsure, but he understands.
"I don't know if... — before everything with Raven not signing, and then finally feeling like I had a choice — I don't know if I'd had many true friends either. I mean I think I did, sometimes... which isn't the same as you..."
Your voice trails off quietly and you curse yourself internally for messing up your sentiment so badly, but when you go to make some sort of self deprecation for being so bad with words and profusely apologise for what you're sure sounded like kicking Daring while he's down, he surprises you — which you're starting to realise is something you might need to get used to.
"No, you're right."
There's something different when he speaks this time, in the way he doesn't sound as defeated, like there's something there that wasn't there before.
Hope. Trust.
You welcome the change — the light at the end of the tunnel — with open arms.
"What I mean is..." You take another deep breath, turning your gaze to Daring, catching his eyes with something he finds he can't look away from, "I may not have had very many true friends... you may not have had many true friends... So... we could be eachother's friends?"
It's a question more than a statement, your nervousness more than apparent in the fear you may have crossed a boundary, your wish to help Daring — and the more selfish desire to spend time with him for your own sake of just liking being around him — having gone too far and landing you right in creep territory.
Daring surprises you again.
His smile isn't like the boasting ones you're used to, it's happier, more authentic. It's true.
He doesn't realise he's nodding, and you don't notice it either, your attention solely on his joyful expression, internally begging yourself not to be horribly embarrassing and cry happy tears.
It feels sudden — but really it's slow, tentative — when Daring flips his hand for your palms to now touch, your hands clinging onto eachother without a second thought. It never even crosses your mind to pull away.
"Y'know..." Daring begins, his voice still tender but louder — more confident — than before, "I've never had a real partner either..."
You can't stop your eyes from widening, how many times is it that Daring Charming has surprised you in the past ten minutes now!?
You're ready to laugh awkwardly, desperately try to hide how much you do want to be with him like that, maybe even run away and avoid him for the rest on eternity lest this all be a joke — but your mouth has other plans.
"Neither have I—"
The kiss is quick, your lips meet his for just a second, and suddenly you're both ten times the flustered messes than you were before.
"—We could be eachother's partners."
Daring's unmistakable grin reflects your own equally elated one.

I’m going on a cruise so I’m downloading a whole bunch of eah fics
These are the ones I’ve downloaded already. I’ve alr read them but they might have updates so I figured why not download every single one I’ve subscribed to.
Anyways, does anyone have any recommendations for eah fics on the longer side that aren’t on this list? Because I’m betting I’ll only get 2 hours max of reading out of all of these and I’m gone ten days

𝐘𝐎𝐔 had just returned back to your dorm after your short shopping trip with Apple, Briar, Ashlynn, and a few others. As all of you each parted your ways you had noticed just as you were about to open the door a presence remained behind you.
“Can I help you two?” Turning around you were met with cheeky smiles given between Apple and Briar. “We just want to help you unpack everything you bought today!” Briar starts, taking a few bags and striding into your room without a care in the world.
“Let me just take these,” Apple reaches over, removing the last few from your grasp and following Briar. You stand, a little shocked, ‘Okay, that was weird,’ You thought, shaking your head before entering yourself and shutting the door behind you.
“[Name] where should I out these?” Apple pointed at one of the bags, while you showed her where said items she be put. Truth be told though there wasn’t much room where you stayed during school so there weren't many places you could put all of it.
And with that thought, it got you thinking of something else. “Why did you guys buy all this stuff for me?” You asked, placing your hands on your hips and facing the two girls, to which the gave each other a quick glance before they answered you.
“We just felt like it you know? Never hurts to spoil a friend, a great friend at that!” Apple winked, while Briar nodded along with Apple’s statement. “So you buy clothes worth more than what I spend in like a year?” You asked, tone shocked but also concerned.
“Because I’m a ‘great friend?’“ You finished, “Well excuse me for thinking your cool!” Briar held her hands up in mock defense, rolling her eyes playfully. “It’s fine really it is! But, why so sudden?” You scratch the back of your mind trying to figure out a way how your going to repay them back.
“Don’t you dare think of repaying us back!” Apple jabbed her finger atop your chest, as if she had read your mind. “How could I not?” Your eyes glaze over your open wardrobe and how it looks significantly more fuller than the last time you opened it.
“Well, if you did by a small chance wanted to repay us back, there is this tiny little favor you could do for us,” Briar squinted her right along with moved her hands to show just how small of a favor she wanted from you. “Anything!” You replied more than eager, as you felt bad they spent so much on you.
“Do you have feelings for anyone?"
Briar questioned, yet it sounded more like she was interrogating you more than anything.
Your mind went blank.
‘Oh, no.’ You thought all emotion leaving your face for a split second before quickly regaining your composure. You coughed, “Uh, no, not at the moment why?” Briar looked at you, skeptical, she traced over every inch of you, trying to look for some sign that you could be lying to her.
Were you making eye contact? Yes, in fact you tried your hardest to make sure your eyes never left her in fear she might think of something. Were you fidgety? No, your arms were crossed so she couldn’t see your hands, and your feet had remained firmly planted on the ground.
You looked like your breathing steadily, but just to make sure. “What are you doing?” Briar walked over leaning her face towards yours, “Your breathing pretty heavy, are you…”
“Lying to me?”
Your eyes shot open, “Of course not!” Your tone sounded a bit more harsh than you would have liked but it really couldn’t he helped. “What do you think Apple?” Apple puts her hand on her chin.
“Seems like someones not telling the truth!” She exclaimed, before she hurried over and looked at you with an incredibly wide smile. “So, who is it?” Apple clasps her hands together, her eyes sparkly.
“Your really dead set on this, aren’t you?” You breathed out, closing your eyes slowly to while simultaneously collecting your thoughts. “If I…perhaps tell you who this person is…do you promise not to tell anyone?”
You glanced back and forth between their faces, “And I’m serious you can’t tell anyone, okay?” They both looked at you, grins so wide it didn’t even seem possible. “Yes! Just tell us who it is!” Briar pleaded, grabbing your shoulders.
You bit your lip, did you really want to tell them, truly?
‘Better now than later.”
You breathed in heavily, the anticipation had began to kill Apple and Briar, you could tell by their faces they were growing impatient. “Daring,” You replied, “The person I’m dating is Daring,” You finished, while Apple and Briar looked at you bug-eyed and jaws open slightly.
“I knew it!” Apple yelled, before abruptly hugging you. “I could tell by the way you two looked at each other in class!” Briar had started bobbing her head back in forth in agreement, “I knew there was no was you two couldn’t possibly like each other!”
Apple, who was now practically jumping for joy, and you didn’t really know why, had taken your hands in hers, and had begun to spin you around the room. “Oh you and Daring would look so cute together!” She sang, voice filled with nothing but joy.
“Just imagine all the dates and dances you would go on together!” She sat you down, briar putting her arm around your shoulders. “I gotta hand it to you, never thought i’d see the day Daring would fall for someone, especially didn’t think you fall to but, hey all worked out in the end didn’t it.”
Briar laughs, your about to speak up until the sound of shuffling is heard, you both turn to see Apple now going through your wardrobe before she pulls an outfit out, “I knew it be worth buying you all this!”
Apple says in her sing song voice again, shoving an outfit in your face. “Wait, is that why you bought all this stuff for me?” Briar nods, “We knew you liked someone, but we didn’t want to say anything, until you told us!”
“And now, we can start helping you confess to him,” Apple clapped her hands, bobbing on the apples on her feet. “Wait what - confess?” Your eyebrows furrowed and looked back at Briar who had progressively began to more tired by the second.
“You did hear what I said earlier right?” Briar shook her head groggily, “All I know is, you and Daring, got something going on,” She replies, pointing at you before suddenly falling backwards into a deep sleep. Her snores now being the only sound coming from her.
“Did you?” You asked Apple, who was still looking through your closet, “Did I hear what?” She asked nonchalantly, as she looked over a shirt in her hands and bringing it up to your body.
“Apple I said I was dating Daring.”
Apple physically freezes, her eyes slowly turn up to look into yours, before she dropping the article of clothing and grabbing you by the arms, “Did you just say you were ‘dating’ him?” She asked quietly, though her excitement couldn’t be hidden. “Yes?” You drawl out, scared as to why she was acting like this.
Safe to say, practically every one knew you were dating Daring by the end of the week.
Apple and her big mouth.

Cold Nights, Warm Hearts
Pairing: Kitty Chesire x fem reader
Summary: Kitty pays you a visit one cold fall evening
Content warning(s): none, just fluff
××
“You snore so loud, it’s almost deafening, did you know that?”
You blinked a few times as you opened your eyes, trying to get them to adjust properly. The somewhat blurry outline of Kitty could be seen lounging on an armchair that was across the room.
“What are you doing here?” You asked through a yawn, rubbing at your eyes as you turn on a nearby lamp. Kitty hissed quietly in respose, squinting her eyes aggressively at the sudden bright ray of light coming at her.
“I was bored and decided to come bother you. Unfortunately for me, you were already in bed asleep.” She gave you a spiteful glare until you sighed and relented by turning the lamp back off. Kitty flicked her tail lightly in appreciation. “It was cold last night, you know. Cold out tonight, too.”
The sentences that slipped from her lips oh so casually meant a lot more than it might seem, and you knew that. Kitty wasn’t great with addressing her feelings, whether that be to other people or herself.
The few times that she was feeling sentimental she refused to be upfront about it, instead dropping sly offhand comments that were left up to you to interpret. This time around, it was her using the excuse of being cold as a way to (not so) subtly get closer to you, without having to say it outright.
“Really? I didn’t notice, I had the heater on all night.” You chuckle softly when you see Kitty’s frown, a clear sign that she knew you were on to her and wasn’t very happy about it.
“Well, goody for you,” she grumbled while rolling her eyes.
There was no way she was going to say her feelings out loud- not yet, anyway. If you wanted to move forward in this little flirtatious dance of yours, you’d have to be the one to make the first move.
You scootched over on the bed, making a spot for Kitty to lay down. “Alright then, come here.” You patted the spot beside you, gesturing for her to get closer.
“Oh, yeah? And why should I?” She taunted playfully.
“Well, I just thought you’d like to get warm, since you were just complaining out it being cold outside. But if you’d rather freeze…”
She let out an obnoxiously loud sigh. “Okay, whatever.”
With a large and cheeky grin, she disappeared from the chair she was on and reappeared next to you in a flash. Kitty pattycaked the blankets a few times before curling up and laying down next to you, almost like a normal cat would.
You smiled softly to yourself, more so when you hear faint purring sounds coming from her. “Goodnight, Kitty. Hope you’re able to get warm this way.”
With that, you pulled the covers up to your chin and sighed comfortably before drifting off to sleep yourself.

Request #1
Word Count - 1,140
Date Posted - 01/16/2024
Pairing - Lizzie Hearts x Daring Charming
Prom Problems
While Prom wasn't as celebrated by the students of Ever After High as Throne Coming was, it still was a big event, and this year it was being hosted by none other than Pyr Ignus, the son of Prometheus, and Melody Piper, the daughter of the Pied Piper. With a fire theme, thanks to none other than Pyr, everyone was dressed to the nines in various shades of red, gold and orange. Daring Charming was no exception to this. With a suit the color of crimson, accented by beautiful golden details and a golden crown adorned with fire opals, he was the talk of the dance.
Daring was used to this, used to the attention he always got, and all the other students throwing themselves at him for a dance. It made him glow with delight. He adored the spotlight, and as long as the attention was on him, he had no reason to be upset, and yet there he was, standing away from the crowd, brooding.
Daring was so lost in his own thoughts that he didn't notice when a Cheshire grin appeared next to him, and Kitty Cheshire showed from thin air. “Y'know, I never thought I'd see Daring Charming of all princes fumble this fairy bad.” The girl practically purred, causing Daring to turn to face her. He looked her up and down, eyes narrowed but he said nothing, knowing Kitty had more to say.
“You couldn't ask your own girlfriend to this stupid dance? Doesn't seem very charming to me.” She laughed when Daring's face turned the color of his suit, turning away from him and beginning to walk away. “She's fairy upset, Charming, you might want to do something about it, before this kitty uses her claws.” Kitty flashed her hand up, showing off dagger sharp nails that seemingly appeared - and then disappeared, turning back into beautifully manicured fingernails - in an instant.
Daring didn't have time to rebuttal, he knew he had been in the wrong. It was more than obvious that he had hexed up. He hadn't thought it necessary to ask Lizzie to the dance, he just figured they'd be going together anyway. They were dating after all? But. . .then again no one knew but Kitty, which was something Daring had been opposed to. He had told Lizzie no one should know, he was destined to be Apple's prince charming after all, he couldn't risk messing up their destinies by letting anyone know he was in love with a different princess. Lizzie had agreed to this, but it seemed a bit reluctsntly. Kitty’s knowledge of the situation just made him worried about it getting out. But now? He was starting to realize he had messed up.
The prince quickly gathered himself, disappearing out the doors of the large Grimmnasium they were using to host the dance, he felt eyes burning the back of his head, knowing at least someone, likely Kitty, was watching him go. He had no idea where Lizzie could have been, but checking her dorm seemed like the most likely place. He rushed down the walkway, his tailcoat billowing behind him as he made his way towards the dormitories. His walk was brisk, and with a purpose, and many of the students still making their way to the dance, or taking a break and cooling off watched him go with curiosity, his younger brother, Dexter Charming, among them.
“Daring where are you going?” Dexter called after his brother, running to catch up with the blond.
“I hexed up, and I'm going to fix it.” Daring said, not slowing his pace. Dexter would just have to catch up with him later. He sped up when he couldn't hear Dexter's footsteps beside his, only stopping when he reached the school's dormitory.
That's when he saw her, Lizzie Hearts was standing on the balcony of the common area every tower had, in a beautiful red dress. He couldn't help but blush as he saw how pretty she was, his footsteps halted and he stared up at her, eyes wide and filled with what one could only describe as true love. After what seemed like an eternity passed, Daring shook his head, snapping himself out of his trance.
He rushed up the stairs and pushed through the front doors of the dormitory, his shoes hitting the floor hard as he rushed up the many flights of stairs to get to the floor Lizzie's dorm was on. He slowed once he reached the doors to the balcony, hesitating a bit before pushing them open. Lizzie turned her head when she heard the creak of the large wooden doors, and that's when Daring saw tears in her eyes. Though for some reason, she seemed to be smiling.
Confusion crossed his face, and Lizzie didn't offer an explanation, she just beckoned him closer. Daring obliged, moving to stand next to her. “I'm fairy sorry Lizzie -” He began, but she cut him off.
“Your fairy fairy funny, Daring Charming. Thinking you can come up here and make everything right with a smile and a half-baked apology.”
Daring knew she was right, his apology wasn't going to be the best ever after, he never had been good at apologizing, and besides, why should he expect her to just accept his apology and act like nothing had happened? He had royally hexed up by not asking her to Prom and he knew it.
“I know I hexed up Lizzie, I just-”
“You didn't think? You never think, Daring.” Her hands gripped the railing, and it took everything for Daring not to place a gentle hand over hers, “I don't think this is meant to be.”
Her words cut through Daring like a knife. He quickly grabbed her hand, causing her to look at him with wide eyes. “Come with me. . .please?”
She didn't say anything, but didn't resist as he tugged her back through the large, wooden doors and down the stairs and out of the dormitory. The two walked in silence, as Daring made his way towards the school's expansive library, the one place he knew would be empty on a night like this. Once they entered, Daring stood to face Lizzie, holding out his hand for her to take.
“May I have this dance?” He asked softly, and though a bit reluctantly, Lizzie nodded her head. As slowly as ever, Daring began to dance with her, a smile forming on his lips, one that seemed contagious as Lizzie was soon smiling as well. Once she seemed a bit relaxed, Daring took the chance and leaned in, placing a kiss on her lips.
Not all was fixed of course, but Daring hoped he was taking the first step in the right direction, one that would lead to his happily ever after by Lizzie's side.

Two Queens In a King-Sized Bed: a Dappling Mini
Point of view: Darling Charming
Ship: Dappling (DarlingxApple)
Tumblr media
Her golden locks and forehead laid upon my shoulder, her breaths drawn out, lightly snoring. The light was obstructed by an oak tree, our oak tree. We'd meet by it every afternoon. I'd been too busy catching up on reading that I had forgotten, and as an apology, I planned an impromptu picnic. She had an exhausting day and fell asleep. By now, all that was left of lunch were the crumbs of apple pie. I didn't want to wake apple up, but she'd been asleep for an hour.
With a few light taps, she awoke, a bit of drool on her face. I grabbed a small cloth and wiped it off gently. She blushed and looked away, and I combed her hair with my fingers. "Shouldn't we leave soon?- I mean, it's like 5 already-" before I could get up, she pulled me into a tight hug, and I couldn't help but hug back. "Wait, don't move...not yet."
After a while, she let go, and we packed up our basket. "Did you like the pie...be honest, you don't have to lie! It just that it took some time and I wanted to make sure-" she grabbed my hand and replied, "it was hexcelent, don't worry about it!" And with that, we left.
We walked back to her dorm, baskets in hand, and laid down. Her bed was soft as silk, and had plenty of pillows. She said that it would just be the two of us, and I just wanted to lay down. I sat on her bed, and continued reading. She was sitting next to me, scrolling on her phone. After a bit, she put her head on my shoulder, so close I could feel her heartbeat. It felt so personal.
"Apple, can I kiss your forehead?" I whispered, looking away. Twirling a lock of hair, she replied, "Oh, uh-yea." She moved a bit closer, and I tenderly kissed her forehead. When we were both exhausted, we set our things aside, and curled up together, and fell asleep.

They fight over the use of the bathroom, dirty tricks allowed, even though most nights they end up sharing it anyway.
Apple stays in there longer, following her skincare routine meticulously and without compromise.
When Raven leaves the room, she rolls her eyes, pretending like she’s not about to smile, just as Apple pretends not to see it.
It works for them and she’s not about to threaten this peace between them.
Once under her covers, Apple calls out “Good night, Ravie”, just because she can. Because Raven no longer throws curses her way when she says it. Because they are friends. And Apple has fought so hard for this, so by the Book of Destiny, she’s gonna enjoy it.
Raven sighs but she still throws a “Good night, Apple-nova” her way.
If Apple has to pinpoint her favorite part of the day, this would be it.
She always falls asleep with a smile.
Raven skeptically tilts her head at her reflection. “Don’t you think this crown makes me look too evil?”
Apple had been about to pin up her own hair. She lets it fall back down on her shoulders. She struts over to her friend—  who is she kidding?, her best friend— and takes a look at what she’s wearing.
“If anything, you don’t look evil enough”, she says with a confidence she’s not quite sure she’s feeling.
Sure, she’s confident. And yes, she trusts that today will turn out well. But still, she compensates with a determination that Raven lacks on this day. Apple understands but still, she feels like she needs to be strong for the both of them today. Put on that extra bit of confidence and determination. Remind her that it’ll all be okay. That they’ll be okay.
Raven sighs sadly but proceeds to put on her earrings.
Apple puts her arm around Raven’s waist, careful not to impede her movement or make a crease into Raven’s carefully shaped dress during the hug.
“You can do it!” She reassures her cheerfully. “It will feel a lot shorter than you remember it!”
Apple can see Raven’s lips quirking up for a short second but she’s quick to be back to her former glum expression.
Perfect, Apple thinks, and let the Legacy Day begin anew.
They’re sitting together at this year’s Legacy Day, as it should be. Apple finds, after all, their destinies are very much intertwined.
In front of them are two rows of students that participate in the Legacy Day for the first time this year and Apple can tell that they are nervous too. Some of them look to her as if to confirm that they’re making the right choice in signing their name. She holds her head extra high. Some others are looking to Raven, hesitantly of course. They are all aware of what it means if Raven signs in the book today. Raven set a powerful precedent that needs to be rectified.
Not if Raven signs, Apple reminds herself, when Raven signs.
She looks beside her to the girl in question who is staring blankly to the front where their principal is just about to take the stage.
Gently, she nudges her with her elbow and presents her with an encouraging smile.
Raven doesn’t smile back but her shoulders unclench and when she turns back to the front her stare is no longer blank but filled with a determination that would make most of the student body of Ever After High tremble.
But not Apple White. Because this stare means her destiny is safe.
She is safe. Both of them are.
And she’s waited a year for this.
When Headmaster Grimm announces Raven as the first one to go up, Apple grabs Raven’s hand, effectively stopping her mid-motion.
“I know that you’re nervous”, she explains, “but you’re making the right choice.”
Raven nods. “I know I am.”
Apple lets her hand fall down. She sits back as Raven walks down the aisle.
Raven’s heels click on the stairs up to the stage and Apple holds her breath in anticipation.
Raven’s eyes wander over the audience, lingering for a little longer on Apple, but her gaze doesn’t stay there, not yet. “I’m standing here another year,” she addresses the audience.  “Last year, I made a decision out of my gut. This time I’ve had a whole year to think about it. And think about it, I did.”
“Last year, I destroyed Apple White’s destiny. This year I plan to give it back to her.”
A pleased smile takes hold of Apple’s face.
“Nevertheless, this year again” Raven continues, “My decision is not the one you expect me to take.”
Now her eyes find Apple’s. There’s a sense of foreboding in the air, and a sense of déjà-vu, but Apple is an optimist with unwavering trust in the ones she holds dear and as such, the determination that Raven’s been sporting still feels comforting to her.
“I know you won’t understand” Raven pleads, and there’s no doubt that this address is meant for one person in this room full of people, and one person only. “Last year I had my selfish reasons but let there be no doubt that this year I’m doing it for you.”
And with these words, Raven leaves the stage.
It’s nothing extraordinary, no thunder or lightning, no evil laughing as Raven walks towards the exit; just a room full of people murmuring and chattering, too afraid of Raven’s powers to stop her, and in their midst, Apple: her face even whiter than usual, frozen on the spot at this repeat of events.
“Not again!” she cries once she’s composed herself, her heels clicking on the tile floor as she runs after her roommate, best friend, supposed enemy, and now apparently traitorous witch. Though those aren’t words Apple herself would use.
She curses her choice of footwear that she had been so very proud of just mere minutes ago. She wishes she had at least reacted sooner, so Raven would have less of a lead on her.
Halfway across the way back to the castle Apple finally strips off her shoes, running the rest of the way barefoot.
She arrives in their room, out of breath, but Raven is nowhere to be found. Apple’s eyes fall on the windows that they’ve left wide open earlier and in the distance, Apple can see a dark point moving in between the apple trees of the orchard. Apple has no doubt it’s Raven. She takes a deep breath, lifts up her skirt, and returns to running.
The hallways of the school are mostly empty but the few people that cross her furrow their brows at her sight. It is a funny picture she paints, Apple assumes: Apple White, future queen, fully dressed up on Legacy Day, running through the castle like she’s crazy. It seems like she has been, believing Raven could leave her selfish ideals behind to secure her future.
Apple slows down her speed once the orchard is in her sight and she realizes Raven sat down in between the apple trees.
“Raven!”, she accuses as soon as she’s close enough to be heard, “what was that?”
“I couldn’t do it” Raven replies softly, looking up into Apple’s eyes.
“We’re friends!” Tears start to stream down Apple’s face. “How could you do this to me? Build my hopes up like that? I thought that if we were friends you would see how important this was to me and finally accept your destiny.”
“Is that really what you thought would happen?” Raven replies, sounding sad.
What does Raven have to be sad over? It’s me who just lost her destiny. Again, Apple thinks.
“Taking up my mother’s legacy entails hurting you,” Raven reminds her. “There’s no way in hell I’d let that happen. Let alone do it myself.”
“But you know it won’t be forever,” Apple pleads. “You know that Daring will save me and then we’ll marry and I’ll become queen. You won’t really hurt me. Only temporarily.”
“But do you really want that? Do you even want to marry Daring?”
Apple sinks down next to her.
“It doesn’t matter.” Raven shrugs dejectedly. “It wouldn’t work anyway. I’ve tried poisoning apples but I can’t. You realize that part of the incantation is wanting to hurt the person you plan to give them to?”
Apple swallows.
“I couldn’t do it.”
Raven sighs, brushing dust off her skirt and standing up. “You’re better off without that destiny anyway.”
“And who gave you the right to make that choice for me? I can very much make my own decisions!” Apple cries after her.
Raven nods. “Now you can.”
She leaves and Apple finds herself sitting alone and overdressed in an apple field. How ironic.
This is not how she expected today to go. Raven didn’t live up to the trust Apple put in her for the second time in a row. Apple wonders why she even bothers to be surprised. It’s Raven Queen in all her evil glory. She’s only been showing her true nature that Apple had been aware of since the very first day they met, foiling Apple’s plans and following in her mother’s footsteps by not stepping into her mother’s footsteps. Again, ironic.
Except it’s not. Raven is Apple’s friend. Apple has spent twelve full months making sure that’s what she’d be. And as such Apple knows Raven. Raven dislikes her mother. Raven dislikes doing evil for evil’s sake. Raven dislikes hurting people she cares about. And Apple spent the last twelve months making sure that would apply to her.
So, in all honesty, when it comes to Raven finally signing in the book, is that really what she thought would happen?
Raven was right about what she said. But Apple is a future queen in her own right and as such, she has her pride. It keeps her from going up to their room and talking it out. And it also keeps her from going back to the Legacy Day festivities. She could not live with the pitying looks. Apple White is not to be pitied.
Instead, she stays beneath the apple trees, leaning back and splaying out on the grass. When she extends her arms, her right-hand brushes against a fallen apple. Apple picks it up and contemplates it. Deciding it’s good to eat, she bites into it and imagines the poison getting into her body and spreading through her veins. It’s the closest she’ll ever get to feeling that. She’s got no doubts that Raven will never participate in another Legacy Day ever again.
When she finally makes her way back to their bedroom after wandering barefoot through the by now abandoned hallways of the school, Raven is already lying in bed. Apple knows the signs, she’s not sleeping. And Apple wants to say something, doesn’t want to lose their friendship, even though she knows they’ll never want the same thing, that they are meant to be enemies even.
So she trudges off to the bathroom alone. Stays in there for way longer than needed, follows her skincare routine meticulously and without compromise. It’s the one thing she still has control of. Then she tapers back into the room. Once under the covers, she calls out “Good night, Ravie,” hesitantly and less cheerfully than normal.
Raven sighs, but she still mumbles a “Good night, Apple-nova.”
Despite the events of the day, Apple falls asleep with a smile.
---
“Bring them all!” Apple screams out of the window, just as Raven enters their bedroom. “We’re not excluding anyone!”
Somebody screams back from down below but Raven can’t make out what they’re saying. Apple, on the other hand, is sporting her face of concentration and laughing at the reply.
“Don’t worry about it!” She yells back. “Raven can’t hurt a fly!”
“Am I right in assuming you’re inviting the whole school to ‘our’ dorm party?” Raven asks, lifting her eyebrows.
Apple turns towards her and smiles. “Yes, but most of them still don’t believe me that you’re harmless.”
“I’m not harmless!” Raven disagrees. “I choose to do no harm. That’s different.”
Apple laughs.
“For that, I’ll show you.” Raven smirks. "I’m not harmless." She picks up an apple from the basket she’s carrying and throws it in Apple’s direction, aiming for it to closely pass her and sail out the window. Except it doesn’t, because Apple catches it.
“Oh, apples!” She notices delightedly, biting into it.
Raven shakes her head, chuckling. “I picked up a few. Thought you might enjoy having them for tonight.” She picks up one herself, biting into it.
“Thank you,” Apple says as she strides over to her roommate, enveloping her in a short hug around the waist before going off into another corner of the room. When she comes back to Raven she’s carrying a letter.
Raven notices that Apple looks apologetic and hesitates before explaining: “You received mail from your mother.”
Rage forms in the pit of Raven’s stomach and quickly rises up to form a cloud around her thoughts and vision. Her hands clench, her grip around the apple and the handle of the basket quickly becoming painful.
Don’t let the rage control you, Raven reminds herself, taking a deep breath, slowly putting down the fruit basket. Once her vision is clear again, she also lets go of the apple, cautiously unclenching her hand before putting it down softly on her dressing table.
Then, she straightens her spine again, taking another deep breath to regain her composure.
“Leave it on my bed.” Raven manages to say. “I’ll read it after afternoon classes.”
Apple nods and does as told, gauging her friend’s reaction in the process.
“I’m okay,” Raven reassures her. “Let’s just go to class for now.”
Apple doesn’t dare to object.
There’s a commotion around their dorm room that got the alarm bells in Raven’s brain ringing. She hurries to get inside, just as the nurse that’s standing next to Apple’s bed proclaims: “She was poisoned!”
Freezing on the spot, Raven repeats absentmindedly: “Poisoned?”
Raven sees the looks of the people in the room shift to look at her and she knows what’s coming. She squares her shoulder and tries not to let it get to her. She’s had some practice with that over the last few years. She can ignore it. What matters now is Apple’s well-being and nothing else.
“Did you finally decide to follow your mom and poison her?” she hears someone say across the room. She doesn’t want to know who it is.
She steps towards where Apple is lying across her bed, even more pale than usual. “Can you heal her?” Raven asks the nurse.
“That depends”, the nurse replies. “Does somebody know what the last thing was that she ate?”
Raven looks up to see Briar on the other side of Apple’s bed, her face contorted in the same worry that Raven herself is feeling right now.
“You were here with Apple to decorate for our party, right?” Raven asks her. “Do you remember if she ate anything?”
Briar looks up at the sound, first at Raven, then to the side. Raven follows her line of sight, cataloging her own dressing table and everything that’s on display there. She also takes note that the apple she bit off earlier is no longer there. Wait. Her eyes flit back to Briar.
“You don’t think I could have...?”
The guilty look on Briar’s face is telling enough and Raven gets it. Even if Briar wants to believe Raven is innocent, the combination of her destiny, the last thing that Apple ate being an apple, and her having been poisoned— it makes her look suspicious.
“I can look into a healing charm”, the nurse says, addressing both Briar and Raven, “But a true love’s kiss would be needed if it’s a curse.”
She levels Raven with a serious look. “And considering her destiny, that’s the likeliest option.”
“It wasn’t me, I swear.” Raven tries again, frustration coloring her voice. “I didn’t refuse to take on my legacy twice, only to then poison Apple anyway.”
“Just get her a true love’s kiss,” the nurse orders and then leaves the room.
The other students who surround them start mumbling and scrambling to get Daring to take care of it. Even Raven can’t help but let her eyes wander towards him. He’s destined to save her after all. And he did sign in the Storybook of Legends.
But Raven knows that Apple doesn’t love him. At least not the way she’s supposed to for this to work. And she doesn’t think Daring loves Apple, either. Raven knows enough about him that he’s going to try to fulfill his duty anyway, that he’ll want to fulfill his duty, even if he knows he can’t. And while he doesn’t love her, he still cares for Apple.
Daring is hesitant, but eager to fulfill his destiny and save Apple and so he lets the crowd guide him to her. Briar, Raven, as well as the rest of the students in the room, watch him raptly as he leans over the sleeping girl and presses his lips down on hers.
He leans back, but nothing happens. Apple still lies unconscious and motionless among the covers on her king-size bed.
Raven looks down on the ground, pinching her nose. She didn’t expect anything else, but still, this turn of events will fall back on her.
Across from her, Daring is panicking. “Why is she not waking up?” He’s turning his eyes away from Apple and once he perceives Raven, he accuses her: “This is your fault. By not taking on your legacy you’ve also messed with ours. Apple is lost now.” He lets himself fall back into the cushions of the armchair in the corner of the room.
Raven would be tempted to agree with him if she didn’t know that it wouldn’t have worked either way. And to a certain degree, messing with Apple’s legacy was even the point. The point was for Apple not to have to go through what she’s currently going through. And if it spared both Apple and Daring the misfortune of being stuck in a marriage they’ve long been less enthusiastic about than they should be? Then that’s good too, they both deserve better than that. She just hopes that Daring comes around to see that one day as well. Just as she hopes Apple does.
If she wakes up.
When she wakes up?
Raven goes to sit down on her own bed, watching and observing the other people in her room. They may have put out the option of this situation being her fault but are paying her no mind now. It’s calming to realize that her being evil is just an option now, and no longer the only considered option.
Raven continues to look over at Apple, and so do the others, but Apple still doesn’t budge a centimeter. Slowly, people start to leave: first the people that don’t know her that well, and at last Daring and Briar.
Some of them even say goodbye to Raven.
“Take care of her,” Briar tells her, and Daring nods in her direction. They’re okay.
But once the two of them leave, Raven is alone in their bedroom with the unconscious Apple.
It’s weird.
The party is called off, obviously, so Raven goes to bed early.
No fight over the bathroom.
No good-natured eye-rolling over Apple’s antics.
And Apple is quiet. Oh so quiet.
Raven already misses it.
She throws a “Goodnight, Apple-nova” her way anyway.
The morning is quiet in a way that is unsettling.
Raven gets up and checks on Apple before she enters the bathroom to get ready.
Still pale. Still unmoving.
She still has some time before classes start and so she drags the armchair over to Apple’s bed, sitting down next to her for the few minutes that she still has remaining.
“I’m sorry,” Raven says, “I thought if I didn’t sign I could prevent this from happening. Seems like all of my efforts were moot after all. Your signing might have been enough to seal both of our fates.”
“And isn’t that ironic?” Raven cautiously grabs Apple’s hand that is closest to her and engulfs it in her own. “That after over a year of you berating me for deciding both of our fates, it is actually your decision that takes away our agency in the matter.”
Raven sighs but takes up Apple’s hand to rest her forehead against it.
“I’m sorry, Apple” she moves her head to press her lips on the back of Apple’s hand for a second. “I really wish I could’ve spared you this.”
She guides Apple’s hand back to the bed but keeps it in her palm for a second longer while getting up and getting ready to leave. Finally, she lets go of Apple’s hand.
But there’s pressure around it now and Raven finds herself unable to let go. Then Apple starts coughing and Raven can’t help but fall back into the armchair.
Then she thinks better of it and gets up again. “If you let me go I’ll get you a cup of water.”
“No,” Apple says, gripping her tighter. “Stay.”
Once Apple stops coughing she leans back into her pillows. “This is not how I imagined this to happen.”
“I didn’t imagine this to happen at all,” Raven admits, then smirks sadly. “But at least you got your poisoned apple.”
Apple lets out a chuckle which quickly devolves into a cough. Before Raven can rush to get her a nurse, she finds her footing again.
“You’re not the one supposed to wake me up.” Apple says.
“I’m also not supposed to poison you on accident and look how that turned out.”
Apple smiles at that and draws Raven’s hand closer to her, intertwining their fingers. Raven is quiet.
Then: “It’s kind of fitting, looking at the last year as a whole.”
Apple chuckles, this time more softly and without falling into a coughing fit: “After all the time I stressed about me not getting my destiny it turns out you’re still my destiny, just not the way I expected.”
Raven laughs at that. “I’m still your destiny. Just not your enemy.”
Apple smiles and lifts Raven’s hand to her lips.

❝𝐈'𝐌 serious Daring! You really gotta cut it down on the staring if you really wanna keep this relationship a secret!” You scolded the blonde, who then looked at you with wide eyes. “I do not have a staring problem!”
He yelled back, pouting like a little boy. “Oh really! Then how come for the last 48 hours I have been bombarded by not only Apple and Ashlynn but Briar too!” Daring looks at you, confused to the point where he squinted his eyes, “What?” He says lowly.
“For the past two days the only words to come of those gossipers mouthes have been teasing, it’s ‘Oh [Name] I think someone has a little crush on you!’ Or ‘Oh [Name] someone seems to like you!’” You groan, raking your nails across your face.
“It’s so annoying! I’m so tired of having to explain that you ‘don’t like me like that’ and we’re ‘just friends’ because we’re obviously not.” Now Daring is just looking at you with an angry expression eyes never leaving yours.
As much as he would want to argue with you, that it wasn’t his fault, or the situation wasn’t as bad as you thought, he knew deep down that he could never win an fight with because of how persistent you were, as well as how you always managed to make points he would never even think of.
“Okay, okay, fine you win!” Daring holds up his hands in mock defense, “I will try and cool it with the staring,” He smiles, to which you follow suit. “Good, now c’mon we still have classes to go to,” You turn to walk but stop when you notice the absence of Daring’s footsteps behind you.
“Well? Are you coming?” You ask, to which Daring just stands there expectedly. “If and when we go back there and I’m basically supposed to pretend your are nonexistent, then can I have just one more kiss?”
He asked, holding up a singular finger. You sigh dramatically, “Ugh, okay, c’mere you big baby,” You extended your arms out, prompting Daring to immediately rush and cup your fave with his hands, “You’re so needy.”
You giggled, while Daring just gazed at you lovingly, “Only for you,” He responded, coming in closer. Your arms are now securely wrapped around his torso while he leans in, slightly brushing his lips against yours.
“[Name]!”
A voice suddenly calls out, and in the shock you aggressively push Daring off of you. “Ah!” He yelps, falling back into the shrub behind him, his body now completely covered by leaves and other foliage. You winced when the sound of something hard thumped against the ground.
“There you are!” Turning you come face to face with a brightly smiling Apple. “Hi Apple, what…what are you, uh doing here?” You questioned nervously, hoping that she didn’t just hear your boyfriend slap into the ground.
“Looking for you!” She smiles, “I was wondering where you were, I wanted to ask if you felt like coming with me and some others to hang out in Book End,” Apple told you, as you silently kept praying in your head that Daring wouldn’t make a peep.
“Yeah! Sure, sure I’ll go, just give me a few to get ready and I’ll hext you okay?” The bubbly girl nodded, before saying goodbye with a quick wave of her hand.
When she’s out of sight you quickly make way to the bush Daring had fallen over in and move aside anything blocking your vision. “Daring! You alright?” Daring looks up at you, his eyes squinted once more but he now glares at you.
“Physically, or emotionally?” He states in a bored voice. You smile sheepishly, “I’m sorry I panicked, I didn’t know what to do!” You try to explain, Daring just stands while dusting his pants off. “You could’ve just told me to hide.”
“Daring either way you probably would’ve just jumped into the bushes anyway,” You know how Daring’s mind works and when he panics, it’s like his entire body goes into some kind of auto pilot, “No!” He tries to deny your claims.
You give him a ‘oh really’ look, “…Yes, yes I would have,” You cross your arms over your chest before walking away towards the building. “Wait where you going?!” You shout back, “To go get ready to hang out with friends!”
“[Name] you never gave me my kiss!” He yells, though it sounds incredibly whiney. “Well then you better wait, because your not getting any for a while!” You smirked, before picking up pace to jog to your dorm building.
“Oh, come on [Name]!”

Some fanart for @royalrebelpropaganda ‘s “I place my head between my knees (do you ever have nights like these)” on Ao3! It was such a good piece of work, quite possibly my favorite eah fanfic I’ve read so far that I had to draw a little piece based on it😭💓
It didn’t exactly come out how I wanted it to, specifically the windows. They’re supposed to be enchanted windows so you can see landscape (or whatever you want to see really) despite the fact that the dorm’s bathroom has no way to see the outside world. She likes to look out above the trees to blue skies above, and finds it a great source of natural light and vitamin D (whether or not she’ll admit it, she prefers sunny says to stormy skies despite anything she says).
Everyone go read their fic it’s so good, you won’t regret it‼️‼️‼️‼️
