New bike week. I had six failed back procedures this past year (the last one actually made things worse). I decided to cross over to the dark side of the force.
My new Catrike 700 recumbent trike arrived Monday. They’re shipped by freight (18wheelers) on a pallet in a box big enough to hold two adult coffins. The bike was complete and ready to ride. They asked for my measurements ahead of time so it was already dialed in and I didn’t have to cut the chain or anything else.
I took off the stock pedals and put my own on first. Next I put my Garmin Edge on and the Garmin radar and an extra light, my road bike bag, plus a water bottle and was off. You need that radar, those lights, and that ugly flag because you are on 6 inches off the ground and hard to see without them.
No back pain, no bottom pain, no chamois cream, or any aches and pains. There’s an easy learning curve especially if you’ve already been riding regular upright bikes. No sharp turns at speed and keep the front right wheel from going off the road.
They are fast on the flats and downhills. On the former you can cruise in the 20’s easily if you’re already fit. On the latter you can reach frightening speeds if you’re in traffic.
Downside is climbing. The smallest rollers are like deploying a parachute behind you. You can’t stand up to put your weight on the pedals so you either grind or tediously spin a low gear at low speed. Most people won’t be taking them over mountains.
I looked into two wheeled recumbents but there’s a steep learning curve and cornering or u-turns on public roads can be problematic. Hills aren’t much better than a trike either. The two wheelers aren’t as nimble as a regular bike so traffic, dodging potholes, and the aforementioned climbing doesn’t make them appealing. Two wheeled recumbents also have hard stiff seats that don’t breathe like the mesh on trikes. Sales of 2 wheel bents have been declining for years while trike sales are steadily rising.
I’ll be splitting my riding time between this and my traditional road bikes. They use different muscle groups so you have to stay accustomed to uprights. I still plan on doing races, fondos, and group rides so the traditional bikes will still see some mileage.
I only have three short rides in but so far I’ve noticed that the power related numbers are down when on the trike. Heart rate is lower, power is lower, calories burned is lower etc. you’re basically not using your upper body much just your legs and different muscle combinations to boot.
Recumbents are fun but at this time they’re still mainly for those unfortunate enough to have muscular skeletal issues. Here in the states there are virtually no races or events for recumbents. You can ride a two wheeler on some local group road rides but mixing isn’t always practical on rolling or hilly courses.

Big stupid eurobike summary
So, it was eurobike again, second biggest bike tradeshow in the world, on paper. This year at like, half size at best. Last year in Friedrichshafen, let's see if Frankfurt next year revitalizes things. Anyways, half the stands as usual, I still felt a certain obligation to head down (4 hours by train each way) and see what's new and all that. Highly limited, selective and opinionated.
Tumblr media
We've seen the TranzX YSI15 dropper before but this was my first time seeing it in the flesh. Cool piece of kit that managed to snag a eurobike award on top. EU Distro is not in the cards til 2023 by the looks. Sad days.
Tumblr media
Kindernay from Norway showed off a 7s version of their hydraulically actuated 14s IGH.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Scandinavia, Black Iron Horse left me thoroughly impressed. Their Cargo Trike is front driven with a differential and rear end steering. Incredibly sound spec with a Shimano Steps Cargoline Motor, the frame is welded in Copenhagen, the Box is from Denmark as well, made from recycled plastic. For a cargotrike without tilt this rode remarkably well, not too dissimilar from a frogleg recumbent trike, surprisingly agile. Tight cornering needs some caution without load upfront, it's easy to tip over. Thumbs up from me regardless.
Tumblr media
Vello has come a long way from when I first saw them in 2015. Their bikes fold fast, are light and ride well. Unfortunately they already have a dealer in my town so stocking them ourselves does not seem to be in the cards.
Tumblr media
Magura is saving our asses with regards to brake supplies right now so the first thing I did when I was at their stand was drop a big fat thank you, local manufacturing saves the day. In terms of new stuff, they debuted their integrated cockpit which mostly scared me from a maintenance aspect, the actually interesting stuff was the CT Line. (The 4 Piston CT5 is not pictured). Standout feature of the CTs is the comically large reservoir which should make them incredibly resilient to air in the brake lines.
Tumblr media
Familiar sight for pinkbike readers at Trickstuff. Not pictured: Dangerholms red Scott Spark.
Tumblr media
Portus cycles showing off their custom trailbuilding bike to spice up the Gates Carbondrives stand.
Tumblr media
New 100 Lux StVZO compliant light from Sigma, knowing Sigma this will be a value banger. Furthermore, in a move surprising everyone, Sigma has entered the E-Bike market with displays and control units for both Aftermarket and OEM. Compatible with basically any big name motor manu except for Bosch.
Tumblr media
SKS is showing off their new floor pump lineup. In the past year SKS's usual MO of importing the steel tubes for their pumps from Asia has come back to bite them as supplychains have collapsed. So the decision was made to procure them domestically and while they're at it they've decided to start fresh with the pumps because you might as well. I am particularly hyped about the new pump heads which solve a long standing niggle I have with what is otherwise the best pump head on the market.

Damn dog
First - and I hope only - crash of my new machine.  Tried to outrun two dogs and they turned and ran right in front of me.  I thought 20 mph was fast enough to stay ahead of them.  Wrong.
I ran directly into the black blur of one and the other went flying, too.  Next thing I knew I was splattered all over the road with the recumbent trike on top of me.  Fortunately there were several bystanders willing to scrape me off the pavement. And, fortunately I only suffered a bit of road rash and some bruises. Unfortunately my go cart-like cycle is a mess.  Bent almost everything bendable and trashed the electronic controller.  $$$. Worst part is that it is very difficult to get parts.  My Catrike model is back-ordered 18 months!
No word on condition of the black dog.  The owner and dog disappeared.  I assume liability was the reason.  The owner of the goldie did stay and was most helpful.  Fortunately her dog was not hurt.
So, me blue beauty is on the work stand at Lancaster Recumbent, battered but not totaled.  Scott,, the owner of the shop tells me he can cobble it back together but will need to replace cranks and gears later in the season.  When he hopes he can get them.  They are currently back-ordered two months.   w

I use a bicycle as a mobility aid. The joints in my feet lock up because of my chronic inflammation, which makes it feel like they’re both sprained; walking ranges from mildly painful to excruciating. But a bicycle allows me to travel without pain. I can also use short bursts of pedaling and coast a lot, which conserves my limited energy. I’ve adapted my bike with a cushy seat and large handlebars to keep the weight off my bad shoulders. Bikes are cheap, easy to repair, and well understood by mechanics and the public. And a side benefit is the gentle low-impact exercise I get.
Unlike some disabled cyclists, I can walk for short distances, and I can lift my bike. I can’t go fast enough to feel safe around traffic, however, and my city lacks dedicated bike paths. I’m just waiting for a cop to tell me to stop riding my bike on the sidewalk - I ride at a walking pace around pedestrians, or idle along with my feet, but rules are rules. It’s just another aspect of my invisible illness that makes me braced for conflict all the time.
Sidewalks are also part of the reason I’m on a two-wheeler. They’re narrow, and in some places barely wide enough to navigate a wheelchair (or not even that). My balance is excellent, but I worry about falls: my inflamed joints take a lot of damage from impacts. I do have a recumbent for wet weather when pavement may be slippery, so that I wouldn’t fall more than a foot, but it’s so long it can be difficult to maneuver, and the tires are suitable only for pavement. If I had access to more dedicated bike paths, not just an incomplete and circuitous network of quiet streets designated “bicycle boulevards”, I might get a trike. For now, though, my trusty upright will have to do. At least it mounts on my car easily.
Disability doesn’t always look like a cane or a wheelchair. Sometimes it looks like someone slowly riding an old bicycle.

WICHITAADULT TRICYCLE ASSEMBLY
Adult Tricycle Assembly Service In Wichita KS
Adult Tricycle Assembly Service near Wichita KS: Tricycles aren't just for kids. Maybe you want to carry larger loads than are safe on a bicycle or the casual feet-forward style of recumbent cruising appeals to you. Maybe you don't have quite the balance you once did. An adult tricycle is the solution and a great way to get around.
If you're looking for an adult tricycle, check out our buying guide, which includes reviews of some of our favorites at the end. Our top pick, the Schwinn Meridian Adult Tricycle, offers the all-around quality, safety, and convenience that has made the brand famous.
Considerations when choosing adult tricycles
●      Tricycle styles
You basically have two types of tricycles: the classic sit-up model or the recumbent, where you're lower down with your feet out in front of you. The latter with its chair-like seat can be more comfortable but getting down onto it and up again is not for those with restricted mobility. The other consideration with recumbents is that because your weight is low and very much at the back, rear-tire wear rates are higher.
●      Tricycle construction
Steel is frequently used for frames. It's strong and relatively inexpensive but rusts if the finish gets damaged. Aluminum is lighter, doesn't rust, and is typically used on better quality trikes. It isn't quite as tough as steel, which may reduce maximum carrying capacity (though it can still be 250 pounds). Titanium is occasionally used. It's as light as aluminum and as strong as steel but extremely expensive.
●      Riding
Note that riders who are used to two-wheeled cycling can take a while to adapt to a tricycle, as there's a difference in technique. It's a good idea to get comfortable in a low traffic area before heading for city streets.
Features
Adult Tricycle Assembly Service near Wichita KS:
●      Speeds
Tricycles are often single-speed. They're made for relaxed riding rather than great physical effort. Three-speed and seven-speed models are the alternatives and worth looking at if you have a few hills in your area. Brakes are usually the caliper/horseshoe type -- basic but efficient.
●      Comfort
Comfort is a big issue and most seats are wide with good padding. Additional springing may also be used. Some have a backrest for lumbar support. Seat and handlebar height adjustment also have an impact, though the latter may be minimal.
●      Basket
If load carrying is important, check the size of the basket and if it can lie flat, allowing more load flexibility.
●      Price
Inexpensive adult tricycles cost from $180 to $200. They tend to be built tough, but quite heavy. Lighter and generally better quality models from well-known brands are $280 to $400. There are several in the $600 range, but it can be difficult to see what extra they offer.
What You Need To Know About Adult Tricycles
A few things I want to talk about. Obviously, a lot of people choose tricycles for many different reasons. One of them may be balance concerns. Another issue is for hauling things around. Or they're also kind of fun. I like it if I just want to get out not having to worry about being up on two wheels. You can really just not have to worry about holding the handlebars too much other than to steer a little bit here and there. So, they are super fun. Now, a couple things I want to point out. One of the great things of a tricycle is the mounting and dismounting is quite a bit easier. Obviously, on a bicycle you need to be able to get your feet to the ground while you're on the seat.
The one thing about a tricycle is, while you do want to be able to get your feet on the ground, when you stop, as an example, if I'm here, and I stop, and I can't get my feet down, you still cannot have to balance. So, on a normal bicycle you've got to be able to get your feet down to the ground to really be safe. In this case, the bike's not going anywhere. So long as you've pushed the brake down, you're good to go. And then you could just sort of slide forward and get off the seat. So, the other thing to look for is if mounting and dismounting is challenging for you, you obviously want to look for a really low step-through height. So we actually have two models, the Body Ease Tricycle, and the EVRYjourney Tricycle. The Body Ease Tricycle actually has a little bit lower of a step-over height. So that's going to be better for shorter riders or people, again, that maybe have some more balance concerns. On this particular bike I would say about 4'11, 4'10. As low as 4'10, 4'11 is okay to ride this bike.
If you are shorter, if you are 4'10, 4'11, I would just want to make sure that you are comfortable mounting and dismounting. One tactic is you can step onto the pedal and sort of push yourself over. Another option, again, is you can step through, then when you're here, you put your foot on the pedal and then you can get up to the seat. So, I would say even somebody 4'9 would probably be okay, but again, I'd want to make sure that you're comfortable getting on and off. And for Sixth three zero tricycles definitely the Body Ease Tricycle's going to be better for shorter riders. So other than that, the only other thing you need to be sort of careful on with a tricycle is taking turns. On tricycles sometimes if you take a turn too fast, you can actually pop up on two wheels.
So tricycles really are not meant for fast-paced riding. If you have some need for speed, please, I think two wheels actually would be safer. I've taken this up to about 15 miles an hour, but on turns you need to slow down to definitely about four or five miles an hour. And it also helps to just lean into the turn a little bit. So you keep the weight coming in so the wheels don't pop off the ground. Again, which is why I say this, if you're riding a tricycle you just want to be safe on it. And you don't want to have to be cruising around turns and really going fast. Now, if you're going to go on a dead straight away, it's okay to go 15, but make sure you slow into the turns. Again, on a normal bicycle, you don't have to slow down quite as much into the turns.
 TIPS
Adult Tricycle Assembly Service near Wichita KS:
●      Check tire pressure: Overinflated tires are as much to blame for pinch flats as under inflated ones. A floor standing pump allows you to pump large volumes of air with ease, making them quicker, easier and more efficient than a hand pump. Some bike shops will let you borrow theirs. Look on the side of your tire for a number.
●      Check brake pads: Worn brake pads reduce braking efficiency. If you feel your tricycle is no longer braking with ease, please get a qualified bike mechanic to repair or replace it as this is a vital part of road safety.
●      Clean your chain: Regularly cleaning your trike’s drive train, including the chain, means it will perform better and last longer. You don’t need to remove the chain; all you need is hot water, a toothbrush, rags, brushes and sponges, a degreaser and chain lube. For a quicker job, you can use a handheld chain cleaner. Just wash and degrease, rinse, dry and then lubricate.
●      Silence squeaky brakes: Screeching brakes are often dirty brakes, or at least dirty wheel rims. Clean and dry both properly, and 50% of the time you’ve solved the problem. If that doesn’t work, they might need adjusting.
●      Lubricate: Buy some bike-specific lubricant and use it sparingly on any parts of your bike where metal touches metal, such as the chain, brake and derailleur levers, cables and bearing systems. Don’t oil your chain unless you’ve cleaned it properly first, as this will create an abrasive paste that will grind away at the chain. Use a lube appropriate to the weather conditions you ride in.
●      True wheels: Turn your bike upside down and spin your wheels. Do they wobble a little from side to side? If so, they need truing, which involves adjusting the length of some of the spokes using a spoke key. Anyone can true a wheel but there’s a knack to it. If it’s your first time, best not to do it on your swanky racer! A bike shop will do this for a small fee. True wheels are stronger, roll better and don’t rub brake pads unevenly.
●      Sitting comfortably: If you are prone to sore bum syndrome, experiment a little with your saddle, raising or tilting it slightly to suit your riding style. If you get sore knees while cycling, you might have your saddle too low. When you pedal, your legs should be almost straight on the downwards revolution.
●      Storing your ride: Storing your bike somewhere dry, away from rain, dampness, dust and direct sunlight will improve your trike’s upkeep and reduce the amount of maintenance required.
●      Service your bike: Servicing your bike once a year is usually adequate, ideally at the start of spring if you’ve been brave enough to cycle through winter. However, there is no shame in getting an expert to take a look– think of it as your tricycle MOT.
 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do adult tricycles need much maintenance?
No. As with two-wheeled bikes, it's a question of occasional adjustment and lubrication. Manufacturers should provide instructions, but they aren't always as good as they can be.
Can I store my tricycle outdoors?
It's nice to keep it in a shed if you can, but we know that's not always practical. If storing it outside, treat yourself to a weatherproof tricycle cover. Most are only $15 to $20 and do a lot to keep your tricycle looking good and working properly.
How much does it cost to assemble a bicycle?
it definitely depends on how many parts the bike is in. My shop charges usually $70-100 for bike assembly (if you didn't buy the bike there).
What is the best tricycle for adults?
Our top pick, the Adult Tricycle, offers the all-around quality, safety, and convenience that has made the brand famous. You basically have two types of tricycles: the classic sit-up model or the recumbent, where you're lower down with your feet out in front of you.

What is an Electric Trike?
Electric trikes are a type of three-wheeled automobile that utilizes an electric engine for propulsion. A trike is a reduced form of the word tricycle and also generally describes a three-wheel cycle. There are three primary variants of trike layout on the planet. These three kinds are Upright, Recumbent Delta, and the Recumbent Tadpole. An upright trike is the layout that some grown-up trikes and also many child-sized trikes are developed around. The recumbent tadpole trikes are similar in layout to the recumbent delta. The motorization of these trikes is quite popular with many varied styles based on each main style. The most typical kind of electric trike is recumbent in style. There are two fundamental sorts of battery style for electric trikes — these kinds fast swap as well as non-quick swap. A fast swap trike allows for batteries to be exchanged out swiftly to make sure that they can consistently utilize a fresh battery as the old one runs down. In this vein a weak electric trike that can go upwards of 10 miles on a single fee without peddling would certainly be able to increase its range merely by lugging a second charged battery. A non-quick swap battery style means that it takes a little effort and time to swap batteries. The ability to transform batteries will still exist, but it is not almost as swift in procedure as the fast swap range.
Tumblr media
The kinds of electric trike differ from manufacturer to maker. Some of the lower end electric trikes (such as the Gomer Electric Tike) will set you back around a thousand dollars American and have a general taking a trip capacity of eight to 10 miles per fee. The prices and also designs vary wildly, however completion result is an automobile that does not require to use fossil fuels and also is fun to ride. Better, if an owner of such a lorry does not want to expend their battery they can simply pedal by themselves. This makes it the ideal car if you are not in a thrill, as battery life can be prolonged quite a bit as well as you never need to bother with the engine passing away on you as long as you have the will to pedal.

Tips On How To Pick The Perfect Recumbent Trike For Sale http://bit.ly/30WvbQv
By Kevin Turner
Most people are taken back to their juvenile bike riding days when they think about trikes. Three-legged bikes were the norm when a child started learning to ride. Moving on to a two-legged bike was seen as an amazing achievement, which is why going back to a trike seems strange for many people. However, trikes have gained a lot of popularity over the past few years, and riding them is a favorite recreational activity. If you want to enjoy the massive health and entertainment benefits which come from riding a recumbent trike for sale, you have to choose the perfect model. Here are tips and guidelines to help you make an informed decision. The first thing you need to think about is the type of bicycle that will be best suited for your needs. Here, you have to options, the delta bike, and the tadpole. The delta trikes have a wheel in front which helps with the steering. On the other hand, the tadpole trike kind of looks like the opposite of the delta bicycle in that it has two wheels in front and one wheel at the back. The second thing that you need to think about is your bike riding abilities. Note that the delta trike is best for people that have been riding trikes for a while and are able to control the ride through sharp corners and turns. The tadpole bicycle is best when you need a bike that can stably negotiate corners, even when speeding. The other consideration to make is the mobility of the rider. The good thing about the delta trikes is that you can get on and off it with ease. The simplicity of the design makes it low enough to hop on to and uncomplicated to get off. On the other hand, tadpole bicycle is a little challenging, especially for elderly people and people with disabilities. Next, think about what you mainly want to use the bicycle for. If you need a bike that is fast enough to participate in activities such as road races, recumbent trikes may not have the speed that two-legged bikes have. However, if you need something to help with the regular ride around the neighborhood while having some fun and exercising your muscles, there is no better option than the recumbent trikes for sale. Then, think about the type of steering that you are comfortable with. Trikes come with two types of steering. There those that have an over the seat steering while others feature the under the seat steering. When choosing the steering type, think about the amount of traffic on the roads that you use often. OSS steering is best for busy roads because you can steer without looking. USS will need you to turn to look beforehand. The suspension system is another consideration to make. If you have back problems, or you are going to be steering through rough roads, think about a bicycle with a great suspension. The excellent suspension takes the pressure off your back when riding. Those are the most important tips and guidelines to follow when buying a recumbent bicycle. There are different trike brands at different prices. Compare and contrast before picking the one that gives you the best value for your money.

Why Using 3 Wheel Recumbent Bike Is The Best Option For You
By Joshua Adams
If you have been using the conventional cycles, you need to learn about trikes. There is a lot that may change your experience of riding. Most people prefer the new models because they have a lot of advantages as compared to others. These cycles are easy to ride and they are also safe and comfortable. The 3 wheel Recumbent Bike has the following benefits. The seat is extremely comfortable because it has a cushion that makes it so perfect for comfort. At the same time, they have a feature that supports then back enhancing the comfort and also safety. That means many people can use it including the elderly. When you are riding it unlike the traditional bikes, there is no pressure on your knees. Another essential feature is the steering system. They are made in a way that it makes it easy for the user to turn and maneuver on the way without struggling. That means even people who have special needs can also use the device without experiencing any shortcomings. People with cerebral palsy can still use it without facing challenges while operating it. Also, the device has durable steel frames that require little or no maintenance at all. It also has powerful caliper brakes to help improve the safety and the longevity of the machine. With the durable and adjustable frames, the trikes can serve you for a long time without failing. With all the comfort that the bike offers to the user, it is also fast. The seats are comfortable and therefore better for anyone who wants to move faster. Without the fear that the rider can fall at any time, then speeding is not an issue. Also, there is less or little wind resistance because the device is not raised. Being closer to the ground and being sure you will not easily fall. You can then speed without fear. These devices offer safety that cannot be compared to anything else. The possibility of falling off is not high and even when you fall it is not easy to hurt yourself. The legs reach the ground and will be able to support you. That will ensure that you do not fall on your head like it is the case with many other cycles. Another hood thin about these devices is that they can climb hills without much effort. If you meet a mountain, you do not have to panic because it is possible to climb it with your recumbent device. If you know how to apply different gears, then you can climb the hill without trouble. Although the speed is not the same, you will still get to the top. It is also important to note that it is not easy to steal these models. It is not easy to cycle if you do not know where to touch. Although you do not need training for that, you also must get some instructions. The thieves may, therefore, have a hard time climbing the device and even selling it. That makes the tool the best and more advantageous than the others.

The Ideal in Big Dog Walking - A Recumbent Trike
Tumblr media
Problem: Most big dogs need long walks for exercise and stimulation. Is dog walking more than we can handle? We are minding Aki, a Malamut Kelpie cross, for our son. She is four years old and 27 kilograms (55 lbs) light. For her, it takes 12km (8 miles) with many sniff stops to make her day. That's a lot of walking, and we humans don't always walk fast enough to suit our canine friends. Solution: Ride a recumbent trike.
Recumbent Trike Configuration
Tumblr media
Greenspeed Magnum BW Side View I can only think of three items on my trike that help - none of them critical. I have Big Apple tires from Schwalbe. As balloon tires, they need only 30psi, giving both a smoother ride and less pain if I accidentally run over Aki's foot. I have soft panniers on the back that keep her away from the rear wheel. This is a precaution only, and I have not had a problem. An offside mirror allows me to see what she is doing when she is no longer beside me. I like a mirror on each side anyway to help with blind spots. I use a standard length leash that I loop through its handle around the bar behind my seat. That way, she is most comfortable trotting beside me in my peripheral vision.
Leaving Home
Meet Aki. She is a four-year-old Kelpie Malamute cross. While her size and shape are reminiscent of Kelpie, her personality is all Malamute. She is strong-willed and talks rather than barks. She is definitely a companion - taking offence if treated as a pet. This makes for interesting, if challenging, dog walking. It is pleasant to be at the same height as our dogs when dog walking. We get to learn things about their behaviour that is lost when we tower over them. Mind you, Aki is a well-behaved companion as long as there is no other dog in sight.
Pet the Pooch
The one time I can pet Aki is when we are starting out. Once we move, whether fast or show, she is so focused that she does not have time for such niceties. I think that is why she is tired on return as much as from the exercise.
Grass or Path
An excellent discussion topic. Should a dog walk on the grass or the path? I asked a vet recently, but she did not have a definitive answer. Indeed, the track is more manageable, and it keeps her nails nicely in check. On the other hand, it is boring if there is nothing to smell. Dog walking is about staving off boredom as well as exercise. I have had to pull prickles from her paws occasionally. I try to ride about half the length of her lead from the edge. In that way, she can choose. She prefers paved surfaces when we move quickly, while she wants to be nearer the smells at a slower pace.
Stop for a Good Sniff
I believe that the walk is as much about variety for a dog as it is about exercise. I put on an audiobook or podcast, and when Aki wants to learn about a location, I am happy to relax in my easy chair and let her. It this dog walking or dog entertaining?
A Wide Berth
I keep Aki on the offside. Most people and traffic pass on the other, but there is always someone who doesn't. In this case, it was a culdesac, so I could pass widely enough for the leash to provide distance. When that is not possible - mainly when a dog is involved - I will hold her leash tight close to her collar.
Beware Other Dogs
Tumblr media
Aki behaves differently, and sometimes indifferently, to other dogs. The one here is about half her size and doesn't bark - but Aki wants to run past as quickly as possible. She can drag the trike if I don't change up and pedal faster. I wonder if that is the Malamute in her? Perhaps a few dogs a mushing harness and a recumbent trike would make a good mode of transport. Here the dog is just a black dot in the distance but Aki is ready to leave.
Dead Possum Alert
Other dogs are the biggest distraction by far. Roadkill doesn't always attract her interest, but this dead possum was an exception. Mind you, she considers possums her natural prey. She is faster and more intelligent than the average possum - particularly when they are dead.
The Backwards Glance
Tumblr media
When we have passed something of interest, Aki will look backwards while still walking forward. I have to be careful of power poles and the like as she can walk right into them.
Pole Sniffing
I think most dogs would stop at every pole given an opportunity. They never have to meet a dog to know all about them. It is hard to tell in the video, but I am slowed by the hill. The slower I ride, the more likely Aki will find a scent too fascinating to ignore. This is where the offside mirror is useful. I can stop if I feel like giving her a break. At this speed, a tug at her collar is enough to have her following again. Sometimes the desire is strong, and she will dig in - going as far as lying on her stomach. Here I am generous and giving her time. With a good audiobook or podcast, the time is for relaxing in a recumbent seat.
Sharing
For me, road etiquette includes making space for those on two wheels. Due to stability, a trike takes no more room on a track than an approaching bike. Unfortunately, that is not obvious, and approaching riders become nervous. On the other hand, the same goes for cars overtaking - making trike riding safer than the two-wheelers. Where possible, I pull to the side, so Aki is furthest from passing traffic. She is not the type of dog to leap at them unless they are leading a pooch. As usual, stopping allows Aki to find something interesting to smell.
Road Crossing
Aki has been trained to sit at road crossings. Her logic is impeccable. She sits if the trike is still but stands if the wheels move. At an intersection with lights, she recognises the green walk signal. The short leash is a comfort too. She can't make a mistake as long as I don't.
Guard Dog
Tumblr media
Even a mild-mannered girl like Aki will deter most people from approaching without permission. I still lock my trike to a rail and take my belongings with me.
Scared Possum
No possums were injured in the making of this video. Even if Aki had dug out the bottom of the pipe, the possum would have just climbed further up. There are times when the situation is challenging to resolve. Possums are nocturnal marsupials who do not see well in daylight. This once decided that a long black channel was the perfect bedroom. They did not account for the power of Aki's olfactory senses. You can hear the poor possum panicking. Aki loves possums - preferably fresh. She could not have got the possum even if she had exposed the bottom of the pipe. It would have just climbed higher - unless the space was full of possums - a not impossible situation. I once had them sleeping in the gap above my office. The last one had its bum sticking out and spent the day trying to get further in. The problem was how to get Aki to leave. I could not pull her away. Malamutes are stubborn like that. Eventually, I heaved her up on my lap and rode blind as she insisted on standing on me. Not comfortable with 26kg pushed through four paws. Once we were away, she accepted continuing with the walk. Such is the lot of dog walking.
Evacuations
Dogs almost always wait for their walk to empty their bowels. I assume it is due to the exercise rather than a desire to irritate their owners/servants. It is easy to miss the signs. We are often moving quite quickly. For Aki, she will put her nose down and start trailing. Within a second, she has stopped and assumed the position. If I did not notice, I could pull her head off. I try to keep observant and monitor her situation with my peripheral vision. If she trails, I use the off-site mirror to see why then slam on the brakes if needed. I get lots of practice since she marks an "Aki was here" pee at least a dozen times a ride.
Gearing Down
Changing down gears on anything with derailleur gears can be problematic - more so when walking a dog. Here is a classic example. As I turn from the flat road to the path, it becomes pretty steep immediately. As we slow down for the corner, Aki will likely find something fascinating and refuse to continue. Consequently, I need to be in an even lower gear to account for a standing start. One downside of a recumbent trike is the difficulty of getting off and walking/pushing. To counter that, with low gearing, you can ride at a speed that would be impossible on two wheels.
Home Again
I like to gear right down on the grass - although it is hardly necessary when the grass is this short. We are home again. Aki has had a 7.5km (4-1/2 miles) walk. I try to do this every weekday to keep her fit and happy. Sometimes we do a 12km (7-1/2 miles) one instead that involves some steeper hills. They don't bother her, but I get a better workout.
One Final Word or Two
If you have a dog and struggle with walks, consider acquiring a recumbent tricycle. If you have a recumbent and no dog, enjoy the freedom. I would love to hear on your experiences riding with dogs (or cats). Read the full article

You can ride it comfortably without exerting a lot of pressure on your knees because they are low and close to the ground.
