Almost all Sonic characters have cultural shock. They just cope differently

Knuckles gets frustrated at what he doesn't know and is expected of him by 'society'

Shadow is silent, wallflower and tries to read everything around him so he doesn't end up acting out of the norm. He also autistic so it makes it even harder

Sonic tries to fit in in every single situation and is overly cheerful with everybody

Tails gets anxious or nervous at times when not surrounded by people who understand him

Amy tries to offer everything and all she has, whether it be gifts or treats. It's also part of who she is, she genuinely loves spreading positivity. She also misses certain social cues and reacts by blowing up

But they'll get through. They'll get there. Or they'll remain themselves and come out stronger for it.

knuckles, the very last of the knuckles clan, has been alone for all of his life, tasked with guarding one of the most powerful forces in the world: the master emerald, which can neutralize the energy of the chaos emeralds. it is constantly subject to danger, whether that be shattering or being stolen and having its power used by those with malicious intentions.

he can never be free for as long as the chaos emeralds and the master emerald continue to exist. his ancestors attempted to abuse the power of the chaos emeralds for their own megalomaniacal desires, and because of that, the master emerald must be protected by him, and only him; the sole surviving member of his clan, an innocent descendant who had no part in such medieval acts, so that history can never be repeated.

knuckles has adapted to his lonely lifestyle quite well: developing a lax attitude, learning martial arts, and concerning himself with his duty above everything else. he's fine with being alone, because to him, it is necessary. without his protection, several things are at stake, and he can't afford to let that happen.

but....things changed a bit after he met sonic.

sonic, a carefree hedgehog who can run and run, and keep on running. the world and its safety rely on him, but he still has a simple and free life. something knuckles never had a chance at.

knuckles thought of the hedgehog as obnoxious and disapproved of him at first, but over time, he warmed up to him. sonic has always had something that knuckles doesn't: freedom. the echidna admired sonic for his free life, and fighting by his side when he could gave him an exhilirating taste of the freedom he dreamed of. not only that, but it gave him the chance to be more than just the guardian of the master emerald.

his identity, prior to meeting sonic, was shaped solely by the master emerald. he was just the guy protecting it from anything and anyone that could threaten it. but after meeting sonic, and realizing that he longed for freedom, he became more than that. he became a reliable friend and a formidable opponent. a caring, gentle soul who would do anything to protect his friends and the flora and fauna on angel island that depended on him, and a force to be reckoned with, one that deserved the utmost respect.

knuckles' job as the guardian of the master emerald is both a grim reminder of his ancestors' actions in a corrupt quest for absolute power over the world, as well as the subsequent retribution for their many sins. a retribution he never deserved to be given, and a weight he never deserved to carry on his young shoulders. despite this, he has learned to be at peace with all of it, because to him, he must see to it that his duty is fulfilled no matter what.

freedom is something he longs for, but he knows he will never get to have it. and he has come to be at peace with it....because there's just no point in feeling any kind of objection. there would be too much at risk.

knuckles, despite his true desires, has accepted his fate. this is how he will always live, and this is how he will eventually die.

alone. trapped, with no way out.

but with sonic and friends, at least he has something to smile about.
