Fave ML Fics of 2020

Inspired by @anna-scribbles tagging me for the 8 favorite things I’ve done this year, I decided to make it 8 favorite fics other people have written instead :) 

White Lies Over White Nights by meirencollector Teen/Oneshot/8,806 words There’s so much going on here—roommates AU, snowed in, drinking and truth-telling games, post-reveal pre-relationship and the pining! Absolutely delicious. It explores each side of the lovesquare so seamlessly and effectively, using flashbacks to contextualize their truth-or-drink game so you get this little peak into what their relationship is like based on how they answer (or don’t answer) questions, and then get the explanation via flashback. It’s a really interesting way of telling this story and it takes you through all the facets of their relationship really eloquently.

Kiss shy by emsylcatac @emsylcatac Teen/Oneshot/3,031 There’s something so incredibly compelling about idiots in love and nothing portrays that idea better than this fic. Marinette is ready and prepared to finally kiss her boyfriend of three weeks right on the mouth. A little confused as to why they haven’t kissed yet, she has a plan, she’s built up the confidence, and she’s going to follow through. This piece is engaging and lively, sparking interest immediately and keeping that interest with quippy dialogue and our favorite duo being cute and dumb :) What’s more fun than post-reveal misunderstandings?

leonard bernstein by Reiaji Teen/Oneshot/10,445 Realistically, I could talk about everything Reiaji has written at length because  every single piece is brilliant and beautiful and fills me with so many emotions. If I could live in someone’s writing, it would be theirs. This piece is special in so many ways; Adrien is adorably head-over-heels, Marinette moonlights as her own wingwoman, they leave each other sweet little presents and notes, Adrien’s relationship with every character is so deep (there are some lovely Adrino friendship moments that are truly perfect), and the romance of it all is so natural and beautiful, it’s impossible not to love. It’s one of those fics that you keep going back to because the writing is so devastatingly beautiful you don’t want to leave.

Graine de Toi by komorebirei @komorebirei Teen/Incomplete/5-11Chapters/21,961 This fic, taking inspiration from Kimi no Na wa (which is reason in itself to give it a read) is really elegantly done. Getting to see Adrien and Marinette’s lives through the lens of the other is a really interesting twist on how we’ve been introduced to these characters in canon. It encourages the reader to view the characters in a different kind of way and the explanation for why they swap bodies is different from any other body swap AU I’ve seen and lends itself more to the plot in a very compelling way. The author does a perfect job keeping Marinette and Adrien’s individual voices very recognizable and their reactions to situations are so distinctly them it’s a joy to watch them try and blend into the other’s life.

Old Wounds by PlaPla @amiraculousplatypus @aplayfulplatypus Teen/Incomplete/4-?Chapters/7,124 This fic has such an interesting premise: No one remembers anything about superheroes or villains or the miraculous except for Marinette, so she has to work through a lot of emotions and traumas on her own. You get a vision of two realities, the one Marinette remembers from before and the one she’s living through now, and the way scenes are sometimes shown side-by-side perfectly demonstrates the kind of inner turmoil she’s working through. There’s a lot of angst and some parts are written so heart wrenchingly, it’s impossible to not ache alongside her. 

Eventually by ominousunflower @ominousunflower Gen/Oneshot/7,093 Such a wonderful encapsulation of the Ladynoir dynamic in a single conversation. It really explores the depths of the emotions Ladybug and Chat Noir feel and the complexities of their lives. The “eventually” of the fic is so well done and sweet and I think really captures the beauty of pre-relationship Ladynoir. They’re written with such care for each other—both of them doing their best in a rough situation and their interactions are so sweet. It’s a wonderfully crafted piece, their dialogue is honest and believable and you leave the fic feeling refreshed and light.

hey cutea by emilieee @e-milieeee Not rated/Oneshot/6,238 An incredibly fluffy and fun reveal fic, the connection is made by Adrien and Chat Noir’s unique boba preferences. There are puns, shenanigans, a seriously amusing setup that follows through with just the right balance of sweet and stupid—it’s everything you could want in a oneshot. Ladybug and Chat Noir have such a good dynamic and I love the way Adrien’s written when first ordering—he’s overwhelmed and a bit panicky and thinking through things too much and not enough and that’s incredibly relatable.

like poles of a magnet by maketea @rosekasa Teen/Complete/8Chapters/12,074 I’m horrendously picky with enemies AUs because while they have the potential to be amazing and complex and gorgeous pieces of writing, I’m always a bit wary of how Ladybug and Chat Noir’s personalities are portrayed. Worry not. This AU (tagged as enemies to friends to lovers) is just so stunning in every way. It’s gorgeously written, each sentence is beautiful (like insanely so, you have to wonder how someone could write so many perfect lines back-to-back) and some are just hauntingly brilliant. If you’re looking, there are so many motifs and examples of symmetry that make this fic so satisfying to read. It’s a work of art.

Fanfic Year in Review 2020

thanks for the tag @2manyfandoms2count! This took me a while to get to but here we are!

Ok I feel like this is just gonna end up being a post where I just gush about Phantoms in the Dark but like...c'mon

This is gonna get long so i've put it under the cut:

1) List of fics completed this year in the order they were finished:

Most of my stories are one shots of varying lengths, but I did actually finish quite a few so we have:

A Chance Encounter and So it Goes- both zenmaster fics for That 70s Show

Touch the Rain: I honestly forget I wrote this last year, it feels like I wrote it years ago but it's just a standard identity reveal in the heat of an argument type thing.

Ladybug Luck? What's That? The fic that really started my spiral into writing for the ML fandom, and the birth of the Bollywood Playlist series.

Post reveal, where they didn't know each other irl, Marinette sees Adrien at a Gabriel party, realises who he is, and does some property damage in the process.

our eyes speak (but on our lips is silence) At a wedding where Adrien is best man and Marinette is a guest they immediately recognise the other as their partner. Pure fluff and giddiness ensue

The Seduction of Marinette Dupain-Cheng Post reveal-Chat bets Ladybug that he can woo her as a civilian, employing good old fashioned tactics like flowers and poetry

Pink Snapshots of an Adrinette relationship. I just wanted to see if I could write an entire fic with no dialogue whatsoever, and this one got a huge surge in popularity recently so...guess I can!

Exposed Another fic where they don't know each other as civilians. When their identities are revealed in the worst possible way, Ladybug and Chat Noir hide out in a hotel room as they try to process the situation.

This Red Love My first enemies au! In which Adrien joins Hawkmoth from the beginning, but still goes to school and ends up dating Marinette. When he realises who she is, he has to re-examine everything he thought he ever wanted.

i have found someone (like a nomad finds a home) In the last one, Adrien willingly sided with Gabriel, but in this one, he is forced to after Stoneheart. Years later, he meets Marinette, who makes him feel like he isn't a monster.

Memory Chat Blanc in the aftermath when there is nothing left.

Phantoms in the Dark My biggest accomplishment last year! And the longest story I've ever written at 30k words. A historical marichat story based off my favourite poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I'm currently working on the sequel.

I only bow down to worship (but I come to a stop when I see you) In which Adrien knows Marinette is Ladybug, and she knows he knows. However, he hasn't told her he's Chat Noir. This is just cute relationship stuff in the same vein as Pink

Collect your Courage, Loyalty, I'll never be the thief (to bring in hot scattered hell) Thought I'd branch out to other fandoms and landed on ATLA. This is a series (eventual zutara) where Zuko realises almost immediately post banishment that he can't follow in his father's footsteps and rebels.

Dancing Lessons Chat Noir and Ladybug decided to reveal their identities at age 20, and now Chat has chosen the venue as well. The only problem is he needs to teach Ladybug how to dance first.

Wish Ok I hurt a lot of people with this one but it's one where in the final fight, Adrien is mortally wounded and Marinette uses the miraculous to save his life, forfeiting her life in the process.Flashes back and forth between her death and how Adrien is coping in the aftermath.

2) Number of words written: 79663. I actually wanted to hit 100k by the end of the year but as those in the guild know, I spent most of December doing kitchen renovations and being pissed about my lack of free time lmao

3) Your most popular fic: Phantoms in the Dark. it has yet to surpass my all time most popular fic it's all a game of chance (they say in wonderland), but it's catching up

4) Your personal fav: Dancing Lessons I wrote this way back in July last year but only posted it in December and I just, it's so sweet I really like it with the flirty banter and just the two of them being SO CUTE

5) Your fav scene: The scene at the end of ch6 of Phantoms where Marinette and Chat talk after their kiss and realise they both are very much into each other.

6) A fic or scene that challenged you:

I am really bad at action sequences, and even though in Phantoms Adrien was out fighting people on the regular, I just sort of...glossed over them. Except for in chapter 8, where I wrote a proper duel between Chat and someone he was robbing.

What I struggled with was describing the movements, not wanting to make it too complicated whilst not having it be 'he feinted and stabbed' or something really simplistic. There was a lot of pen acting involved, but I think the end result is quite good, if I do say so myself.

7) A line of writing you’re proud of: From Phantoms (of course)

In every lifetime, in every land, we shall find each other.

8) A comment that touched you:

I love every single comment that I get, but someone left this on my musketeers fic Going Through the Motions (posted as a series on ao3 to motivate me to finish the fic but when it was done I compiled all the parts and posted it on ffnet as a oneshot lol and one of my absolute fave fics I've written-no surprise that it's historical 😅) on ffnet, which was a HUGE compliment:

"I like the way you wove dialogue from the series with your fiction. Your story gives us a more complete picture of Bonacieux and explains why Constance rejected D'Artagnan, which we did not get from the series. Your version is better. Well done!"

9) Something that inspired your writing:

I mean...I have an entire series on ao3 that is just fics inspired by bollywood songs/scenes-and those were my main inspiration for so many things. (I actually realised the other day that a scene from the movie Kalank is what inspired me to write Wonderland lmao)

10) Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc):

Honestly, just writing consistently! I graduated in 2019 and in the past, I've started and abandoned so many projects and ideas, and even the first fic I posted on ao3-it took me a year to get the second chapter up and then I only finished it because I wanted to post other stuff but didn't feel like I could until I finished that one lol.

So yeah, that, and of course, actually writing and finishing Phantoms instead of abandoning it like so many of my other ambitious projects. I'm really proud of the 30k I wrote for that story because it's the most I've ever written for a single thing

11) Do you have any writing goals for the next year?

I want to finish Forgotten Promises, and the third story in the series. I have the vague plot for that one, and know what's going in the epilogue to end the series but I just need to get there.

Oh! and see 100 ways to say I love you to the end.

every morning, she’d climb up that sycamore tree (an AU of the book Flipped) has the most hits.

4 Your personal fave

My personal favorite has to be i’d love to go on a date with you, but I also want to put every morning, she’d climb up that sycamore tree up here as well.

I’ll talk about the first fic later (I also talked about why it’s one of my faves in this post), but the second is because it’s based off of a book I used to read as a child called Flipped. This fic has a special place in my heart bc it’s an Adrienette fic, one of my fave ships in ML, in the universe of my favorite book when I was young.

5 Your favorite scene

The scene in uncharted territory when Ladybug realizes that she’s in love with Chat Noir. She’s on a date with him in this one, convincing herself that it isn’t actually a date, but she’s still enjoying the time she has with him. Until Andre the ice cream maker slaps her silly with realization and makes her overcome the truth that she’s in love with him.

The yearning and the pining, Chat respecting her feelings, all of that is just… aaahhh I’m a sucker for it 🥺

6 A fic or scene that challenged you

Starting the fic i’d love to go on a date with you really challenged me. I was really going through a tough time writing it. I explained it on this post, but I got a lot of help, and it’s one of my proudest works bc of how I overcame the struggle to write it. Plus, Ladrien rights, and Ladybug in a tux, so for all these reasons, this one has to be one of my favorites.

7 A line of writing you’re proud of

Okay, I’m picking two because HECK.

This line from silly notions:

Adrien gently shut the double door, bringing with him the moonlight that still rested in his frame, and rested upon his lips was the kiss that could’ve been.

I think this was my first time writing something like this, like.. yearning, but not quite getting there yet, ya know? Ladybug yearning to be with Adrien, despite the fact that she shouldn’t, but she wants it, wants him. Aahh, Ladrien 💞

Also this in my Chat Blanc fic, drown in your green:

Ladybug could soak herself in [the] green [of his eyes] if she could. She would swim in it, would drown it in, beg for it if it meant it could never turn blue. Never turn dull.

When I first wrote that line, I was only just.. writing it to write. But then when I reread it, and saw the word blue, I was like.. “omg. It has a double meaning. Folks, it has ~double meaning~. Ladybug is desperate to go back to the times before she ever fought Chat Blanc, but also desperate to return to the days when she had only witnessed Chat Noir happy.

But overall, I really like the color symbolism in this fic aaahhh, proud of it.

8 A comment that touched you

Ahhh there’s a lot of comments, but I think there’s one comment that wins this one. I received a really touching comment for my Flipped AU from BurnDaBreadGetDaGirl on AO3, when I was really struggling to continue writing it. I asked on the A/N how to overcome the writer’s block, and she wrote by far one of the most inspiring comments I’ve ever read. Ever. She told me to just kind of.. bask myself in the character’s POVs, think how they think, and even go about my daily living just thinking about how the characters would react or think about certain things. I’m only paraphrasing, so my words can’t do justice to her comment, but it was so beautiful. I ended up getting in touch with her on Discord. 

Burn, idk if you’re ever going to read this, but your comment really touched me, even to this day, and I want to thank you for your support <3

9 Something that inspired you to write

Music inspires me a lot, I can’t even list all the songs I’ve listened to, but I know Taylor Swift’s songs is up there for sure. I wrote a fic for one of her songs, It’s Nice to Have a Friend. Also folklore and evermore inspired me a lot to write a couple WIPs I have.

Other people’s pieces of writing, fanfics from this fandom, but also fanfics from other fandoms, particularly The Umbrella Academy fanfiction. I read a lot of TUA fics in 2020 as well.

The lack of specific narratives, tropes for specific ships, certain dynamics, and all that. You know, when you have that thought where you go “Welp, if no one will write this, I guess I will!” Yeah, that’s me most of the time 😆 I wrote this fic, Little Red Riding Hood with the Blond Hair, because of that kind of thought. It’s a Misternoire/Adrinoire Folklore AU fic, and I hadn’t read anything like that so I decided, hey, why not. I love Misternoire/Adrinoire because Lady Noire is just a little shit, and I love her. I feel like there needs to be more of her in fanfiction.

And of course, everyone on the Miraculous Fanworks server on Discord really inspired me. They made me feel more confident in my writing. But not only that, they made me feel like I have a place in the ML fandom. Feeling a sense of belonging really made me have more confident with the things I post online for the ML fandom in general. I feel like I had a voice, and since joining, I’m much more eager to express myself and my ideas. I can’t thank this server enough, I’ve grown a lot bc of them <3

10 Your proudest accomplishment

Overall, just realizing that my writing has worth, and that I should write for me. This took a really long time for me to learn bc I felt really insecure about my writing. But then I realized that I write because I have a specific and unique narrative that I want to tell. My works aren’t comparative to other people’s bc each of one us has something amazing and beautiful to share.

11 Do you have any goals for next year

Mmm it would be nice to reach a certain word count? Maybe publish at least 25k words? Idk, I’m not too strict with writing goals. I just like writing whenever I want to.

Fave ML Fics of 2020 (part 1)

Below you will find some incredible fics written by insanely talented individuals in which some (if not all) of the fic was written in 2020. Rather than give a summary of each piece, I basically just gush about why I love them and why you’ll love them too.

new marinette by maketea @rosekasa Complete-3 Chapters/Teen/12,323 words This is a story for people who are okay with having their hearts torn apart and then stitched back together. It will hurt you—but in the best possible way—and you will thank the author when you’re done. Marinette has amnesia and doesn’t remember her relationship with Adrien, but it doesn’t stop her from loving him. What really makes this fic so special is all the tiny details that make it come alive. It had so many sweet and soft domestic moments and the way it portrays characters falling in love is so heartbreakingly beautiful, you can’t turn away once you’ve started.

Those Benevolent Stars by peachcitt @peachcitt Incomplete-2/3 Chapters/Gen/14,012 words I would probably sell my soul for the final chapter of this fic (coming soon!) It follows soulmate-less Adrien who sees the world in various shades of grey finally seeing color when his house is being robbed by a thief who calls herself Ladybug. The relationship developing between them is so push-and-pull, Ladybug tries to keep the distance between them but even she can’t stay away. Seeing the world through Adrien’s eyes—getting to experience color for the first time with him—is incredible. Adrien is an artist who’s always been told which colors to paint where, but seeing him finally having the knowledge and freedom to express himself with color in a way he’s always been denied is stunning. The writing is absolutely gorgeous, each emotion described so viscerally it’s impossible to not fall in love alongside him.

comfort food by Reiaji Oneshot/Gen/9,715 words Marinette and Adrien cooking together has never been expressed so beautifully. Once you start reading, you are basically incapable of stopping, each scene flows so easily into the next (and there’s some lovely art interspersed throughout!) Every one of Marinette and Adrien’s interactions is written so truthfully and lovingly, the relationship that develops over 9.7k words is so natural you feel like you’re falling with them. This piece showcases Adrien so excited to learn while also incorporating some failures and not shying away from the emotions cooking side-by-side brings out in both of them. The writing is like poetry, so evocative and imbued with details that make it impossible to not fall as deeply into the story as possible—you just melt into it. It’s the kind of story where reading certain lines will make you actually tingle and you wonder if the writer can see inside your mind.

Chapter 3 of A Series of Meets : A Collection of One-Shots - Love Square: Reach (LadyNoir/Adrienette) - February 14, 2020 by damagectrl @damagectrlwrites Oneshot/Teen/12,674 words This is a series of oneshots (as the title suggests) and they’re all long enough to be full stories in their own right. I would honestly recommend reading all of them, but this one in particular is my favorite from this year. Ladybug and Chat Noir are both the saviors of Paris, but they have a serious rivalry between them due to how Paris recognizes their good deeds and their styles of heroing. Marinette and Adrien meet at the grocery store when he helps her reach a bag of chips from the top shelf. So I’m just...such trash for good meet-cute. And this is definitely one of the cutest. The romantic relationship that builds between Marinette and Adrien is so playful and fun and beautiful and the way it contrasts the competitive edge in Ladybug and Chat Noir’s relationship is incredibly well-written. It straddles the line of ugh-I-hate-my-coworker and begrudging-respect really perfectly. And the ending is just ahhh, magnificent.

Come Roses, Come Thorns by emilieee @e-milieeee Incomplete-9/? Chapters/Not Rated/30,904 words I really adore fairytale AUs and there have been some Beauty and the Beast ones in the past, but they never really felt true to character to me. They often have Chat Noir be cruel or harsh and that’s just not a characterization I jive with. This story takes a completely different approach. Chat Noir is still under a curse and Marinette still takes her father’s place in the castle, but he’s never vindictive or rude to her. Everyone in the castle except for Marinette is inflicted with the curse and it strips them of their memories, so rather than feel like everyone is hiding information from Marinette, it feels more like a mystery we get to solve alongside her. She also meets a beautiful golden-haired boy in the night and we’re left to wonder about his connection to the rest of the castle. The story is anchored by some of the most beautiful descriptions you will ever read (seriously, I want the author to narrate my life, it’s gorgeous) and a page-turning plot. 

Margins of Error by merridiem Oneshot/Teen/2,238 words Told through Adrien’s perspective, we get to see a conversation about love between Chat Noir and Ladybug. The way Adrien’s structured life and his predictable studies of physics and calculus contrast the anomaly that is Ladybug and the impossibly deep feelings he has for her is brilliant. Their conversation feels hauntingly honest, and when Ladybug finally asks the question “Do you want me to show you how I think they should write our kiss?” you’re blushing and sputtering just about as much as Chat Noir is.

state of grace by dragonsinparis @dragonsinparis Incomplete-10/? Chapters/Teen/42,964 words For those of you who are fandom grandparents like I am, you might remember this fic from when it began way back in 2016. After not being updated since 2017, another brilliant chapter came out this past April. And I completely flipped my shit for it. Chat Noir is fatally wounded during battle and Ladybug risks everything by going into the underworld to save him. This story has some of the most incredible world building you will ever find, and a Ladynoir dynamic that is so ride-or-die you can’t help becoming emotionally invested. 

the way you said “i love you” by bakerblake Incomplete-8/? Chapters/Gen/9,484 words A lovely collection of the Lovesquare confessing their love to each other. Literally, just the first chapter/prompt absolutely wrecked me, I have to consciously space out my readings of this fic because otherwise I will die of how breathtakingly perfect it is.

i'm out of my head and i know that you're scared (because hearts get broken) by serendiptitty @multibug Incomplete-18/? Chapters/Teen/49,629 words This is a streamer/long distance friendship AU and while I have literally 0 experience in the gaming/streaming community, it definitely rings true for my long-distance friendships. The buildup in Chat Noir/Ladybug’s relationship is so realistic (and BOY the amount of times Adrien tries to convince himself he doesn’t have romantic feelings for Ladybug absolutely killed me, rip, I was too young to die.) I can be really picky about chat fics, but what I love about this one is how it combines chat text (over discord) to standard prose/dialogue. The transition is effortless and gives us the most complete view of the story, with all the messy emotions and real-life difficulties that make Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction great.

We Break Down, To Make Up by BreG21 Oneshot/Teen/10,796 words An alternate ending to Chat Blanc, when Marinette is threatened to break up with Adrien by Gabriel Agreste, she confides in her partner. They work together to beat Gabriel at his own game and it’s a joy to watch. I love that this fic has all the fluff and goodness I crave in a fic without hesitating to explore the implications of their plan. It focuses on Marinette and Adrien’s relationship, but it still portrays very in-character interactions with their friends and family and the way Marinette and Adrien manipulate the media to their advantage is extremely fun to watch. It’s a really lovely telling of “what if?” that I too had been craving since Chat Blanc aired and the perfect to reread after a long day.
