Month 10 - Leafbare
“Yarrowshade?” Nightfrost asked softly. Yarrowshade immediately lifted his head from where he had been sleeping, the two of them curled around to rest on each others’ flanks.
“Yes?” he asked, ready to do whatever she wanted. The snow had prevented anyone from harvesting horsetail. A storm had rolled in again after Sagetooth had returned, delaying Branchbark’s expedition to try and find any. Luckily, today had lots of sun and no new snow, thawing the drifts enough that sometimes grass was visible between them again. Branchbark had left earlier that day to go looking. The others had agreed to handle the border patrols and Goldenstar was taking care of Barleypaw’s training for the time being, which he was grateful for.
As much as he hated to think about it, everyone seemed to think that Nightfrost wasn’t long for the world and he wanted to spend as much time with her as he could. He wanted to believe she would get better but if she didn’t he couldn’t bear the thought of her being alone.
Nightfrost smacked her lips a bit, wincing at the taste of her nap, and asked, “Are you also feeling really warm?” Her voice was faint and woozy which worried him.
“No, I’m not,” he shook his head, “are you feeling really warm?”
“Yeah,” she mumbled, laying her head back down on his side.
“Maybe I should get Sagetooth,” he said, shifting to get up and she whimpered.
“No, don’t,” she moaned. “Please stay.”
Guilt weighing down his gut, Yarrowshade settled back down. “Okay, I’ll stay.” He sat there for a long moment, watched her shut her eyes and grimace in discomfort, and felt her heartbeat thumping quickly against him. Something was wrong.
“Sagetooth!” he called, disliking the worry that wobbled in his voice.
“What is it?” she asked, sounding cranky as ever. She limped around the corner of the burrow from where she had been resting in her nest. Like Nightfrost, her paws had been bound with cobwebs to keep them clean.
“Nightfrost says she’s feeling very warm,” he said.
“Fever,” she grunted, expression darkening. Carefully, she made her way over and sniffed at Nightfrost’s paws. She stepped back, nodding solemnly. “Definitely infected.” Nightfrost whimpered and shifted uncomfortably in the nest. Somewhere deeper in the den, Oddstripe coughed. Yarrowshade hated how much the situation reminded him of the time that cats were sick with the Red Gut plague.
“What can we do?” he asked.
“We can cool her down with snow,” Sagetooth shrugged. “I can give her some borage, maybe poppy seeds. Other than that… there’s not much to be done until Branchbark returns with the horsetail.”
“Okay,” he nodded. “You get her some borage, I’ll grab some snow.”
“Here,” she said, limping over to the herb stores. “Take a pumpkin leaf and fill it.” Very carefully, he pulled himself out from underneath Nightfrost and she whined again.
“No, don’t go,” she pleaded.
“I’ll be right back, my love,” he said, pressing a few licks to her forehead. Stars, she was burning up. He moved to join Sagetooth and take the pumpkin leaf she was offering. As he took it, he whispered, “How long does she have if he doesn’t show?”
Sagetooth sighed. “Hours. You should prepare to surrender her to StarClan.”
Yarrowshade’s stomach twisted sickly. He nodded and took the leaf outside to fill it with snow. His mind was far away and his eyes refused to focus. He felt like he was floating out of his body and out of time.
You should prepare to surrender her to StarClan.
The word surrender made him feel ill. How could she ask that of him? He had only recently been able to call Nightfrost his and now he was being forced to let her go. He had never been one to give up. He had never been one to stop fighting. If there was something worth saving he would always fight for it until he couldn’t physically move. But this was an illness. What was there to do? He had no way to fight.
He thought back to something he had told Goldenstar when Toadpaw had been taken. I’m just tired of losing cats and being powerless to stop it.
Feeling that tiredness in a foggy haze around his mind, he bunched the leaf up in his teeth and brought the snow back into the den. Sagetooth showed him how to close the leaf shut with a bit of cobwebs and then handed him the borage and instructed him how to feed them to her. He did so then gently returned to the position they had been in before, curled close so he could feel her heart beating against him. He carefully placed the leaf of snow onto her forehead and she sighed in relief, the most beautiful noise he had ever heard.
Please, StarClan, he begged wordlessly, let Branchbark return in time.
He let her rest. Words passed through his brain, a thousand different ways to start a conversation with her, but none of them felt important enough to disturb her. They would all be for his benefit and none of them would be as satisfying as he might hope. Eventually the snow melted and he very carefully groomed the water from her fur and tossed the leaf to the side. At one point he hummed a tune for her and she smiled.
It was hard to tell how much time had passed. He started to doze unintentionally but was woken when she suddenly twisted and whimpered.
“Nightfrost?” he asked. She was breathing hard and her heart was hammering against her ribs.
“So cold,” she breathed, trying to pull him closer. He licked her fur the wrong way, trying to warm her up the only way he knew how.
“It’ll be alright,” he said. “Branchbark should be here soon, just hold on.”
Nightfrost whined and pressed herself close against his flank. “Yarrowshade?” she asked.
“Yes?”
“Can you sing again?”
“Of course, my love,” he said, starting humming the tune from before. He nuzzled close to her, tried to press his weight comfortingly against her. Her breath was shaky now, starting to falter. Her hammering heart beat began to slow. His whole chest tightened in anticipation. She could pull through this, he told himself, she was the strongest of all of them.
She twitched sharply, eyes opening, and stared blankly at the ceiling. She twitched again. Her heart beat slowed to a crawl and faded. He held his breath, searching for it, for the sound of her breath rasping in her throat. She laid silent and still against his side.
He choked down a sob. “Nightfrost?” he asked. Silence. He wasn’t brave enough to ask again. Closing his eyes, he pressed his chin against her, held her close. He didn’t cry very often but now the grief shook his whole chest and constricted his throat. Tears rolled down his nose and into her fur. Distantly, he registered Sagetooth peering around the corner of the den and was somewhat relieved when she disappeared again. He grit his teeth and wept.
Tumblr media
That night, Branchbark returned with the horsetail.
UPDATES: - Nightfrost's frostbite becomes infected. She does not survive.

Warrior Cats Prefixes - B - Part 6 [Borage - Branch]
the names listed here are my own personal headcanon names that I use when in reference to the canon Clans. Others are free to use them and you're free to disagree with the ones I use, but in the end they're the ones I personally like to use.
this list is liable to change as time goes on and my ideas change.
there will be around 5-8 prefixes per list. Some may have more, some may have less, but the general range is about 5-8.
/ / / / /
Borage
Borage- as a name comes from the borage herb, which is an herb used in the Clans to help queens produce milk, bring down fevers, and sooth belly aches and tightness of chest. Borage, as it is an herb, is known to all five Clans. It is considered an uncommon name, though it is common in its favored Clan - WindClan.
Type: nature // subclass: plant [this name denotes that it is based off of a plant or something that is considered plant-like]
Requirements*: with the borage being a plant, it has many parts. Many parents choose to name kits after the sky blue flower, meaning they lean towards gray kits.
Others choose brown or gray, to fit better with the stem and leaves.
Canon Examples: None
Random Examples [non canon]: Borageclaw // Borageslip // Boragewater // Boragewish
/ / / / /
Boulder
Boulder- as a name refers to massive rock fragment, which aren't often found in the Clan territories - but are familiar with locations like mothermouth and the mountains. These massive stones are known to all five Clans and is considered an uncommon name.
Type: nature // subclass: earth [this name denotes something related to the earth/ground]
Requirements*: Most cats agree that Boulder- cats need to be big. When it comes to fur color, however, some believe gray cats are fitting for Boulder-.
However, there are those who wish to use brown. Even a rare few give the name to ginger cats!
Canon Examples: Boulder [warrior of ShadowClan] // Boulderfur [warrior of WindClan]
Random Examples [non canon]: Boulderfern // Boulderhawk // Boulderstripe // Bouldertooth
/ / / / /
Bounce
Bounce- as a name comes from the movement, where one gives hop in place. Bounce-, when it comes to kits, is often given to kits who are notably squirmy or restless. If a parent waits long enough, they may give the prefix to their most active kit. With this being a movement name, it is known in all five Clans and used uncommonly without preference.
Type: movement [this name denotes movement/activity and is often given to kits who aren't named the day they're born]
Requirements*: Bounce- is given to excitable, squirmy, and/or active kits.
Canon Examples: Bouncefire [warrior of SkyClan]
Random Examples [non canon]: Bouncefeather // Bounceleaf // Bouncerun // Bouncestep
/ / / / /
Bracken
Bracken- as a name comes from the bracken plant, which is a tall fern with course lobed fronds. These plants cover large areas and in the UK they thrive best in woodlands. That being said, this is quite the common plant, in fact being one of the most common plants. It is also a common name used in all five Clans, with ThunderClan, ShadowClan, and SkyClan using this name the most
Type: nature // subclass: plant [this name denotes that it is based off of a plant or something that is considered plant-like]
Requirements*: with plant names, gray and brown tend to be the most common colors - golden-brown especially due to the golden-green leaves. Some say that cats with course fur or cats with scruffy pelts embody the perfect Bracken- cats.
Canon Examples: Brackenfoot [warrior of ShadowClan] // Brackenfur [warrior of ThunderClan] // Brackenheart [warrior of SkyClan] // Brackenpelt [warrior of RiverClan] // Brackenwing [warrior of WindClan]
Random Examples [non canon]: Brackenbloom // Brackenlight // Brackenpatch // Brackenseed
/ / / / /
Bramble
Bramble- as a name comes from the bramble plant - which is a wild vine or shrub that is part of the rose family. It most famously includes blackberries and raspberries. Brambles grow abundantly all throughout the British Isles and as such is a plant that all five Clans know well. It is a common name that isn't favored by any Clan.
Type: nature // subclass: plant [this name denotes that it is based off of a plant or something that is considered plant-like]
Requirements*: Bramble- cats are commonly brown, black, or ginger - brown matching the bark and both black and ginger matching blackberries and raspberries. Very rarely is white used to resymbol the small white flowers.
Canon Examples: Brambleberry [medic of RiverClan] // Bramblestar/Brambleclaw [leader of ThunderClan]
Random Examples [non canon]: Bramblebelly // Brambleglow // Bramblestone // Brambletoe
/ / / / /
Brambling
Brambling- as a name comes from the brambling bird, a member of the finch family. They are widespread birds who are often found in large flocks. The males are notable in their black heads and orange chests while females look similar to other chaffinches. They are common prey for Clan cats and are known in all four Clans. That being said, all Clans except RiverClan favor this uncommon name - in fact it's almost considered rare in RiverClan.
Type: bird [this name denotes a type of bird]
Requirements*: Brambling- cats tend to be brown, though tortoiseshells with the name aren't unheard of. Funny enough, these cats tend to be the reverse of the coloring of actual bramblings - with tortoiseshell mollies being named after male birds and brown toms being named after the females.
Canon Examples: None
Random Examples [non canon]: Bramblingcoat // Bramblingleap // Bramblingscreech // Bramblingwing
/ / / / /
Branch
Branch- as a name comes from the 'arms' of the trees in which leaves grow, birds make their nests and rest, and cats climb. Not just trees have branches, though the word often invokes the thought of trees in most. Branches are, of course, known in all five Clans. However, the name itself is surprisingly considered uncommon - though it is just over the fine line between common and uncommon names and it tends to fluctuate because of this.
Type: nature // subclass: plant [this name denotes that it is based off of a plant or something that is considered plant-like]
Requirements*: Branches, like trees, come in all sorts of colors. Still, brown is considered fairly common for Branch- cats. Even then, some say that Branch- works better for cats who will grow to be tall or cats with long tails. This is considered 'up for debate'.
Canon Examples: there are two rogues named Branch, but they are not listed as Clan cats
Random Examples [non canon]: Branchcloud // Branchleap // Branchswipe // Branchtail
*requirements are not actually required, but simply the most common attributes associated with the name. Often honor naming ignores these requirements, but these are still more like loose suggestions than any hard-set rules

Note
I absolutely love the 10% left AU idea, so I decided to make my own. Obviously though, I went a bit above the 10% with my initial randomized cats. After plugging every name from TLH into one of those spinning wheel things, I came back with the following cats:
Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, Foxleap, Nightcloud, Robinwing, Grasspelt, Sunstrike, Redwillow, Tawnypelt, Tigerheart, Starlingwing, Toadfoot, Thistleheart, Birchfall, Mallownose, Mintfur, Ivytail, Cherrykit, and Mistkit.
The first moon is tumultuous. With only so few cats remaining out of over 100, the first few days after the battle are spent preoccupied with nursing wounds and identifying & burying Clanmates. Because there’s so few of them left, they’re left with cracked and bleeding claws from the hours they’ve spent digging countless graves. When the sun reaches it’s peak, they’re forced to watch carnivorous birds take turns picking at the corpses of family, friends, and former mentors. When they sleep (if they can), they often wake to find the bodies of some of their Clanmates gone, with only a few feathers littered on the ground for any indication of where they went. Those who remain aren’t sure whether to thank or curse the predatory birds. The smell of blood hangs heavy in the air for almost a half-moon after the battle. The survivors find each other, and with Tawnypelt being the eldest, she naturally assumes leadership. Hollyleaf hunts down and kills Redwillow without hesitation.
Tawnypelt’s reasons for not going to the Moonpool are simple: she knows the four Clans must return. It wouldn’t be right for her as a ShadowClan warrior to govern the last remaining souls of four Clans. Doing so felt too close to what her murderous father tried to do seasons ago. She appoints Hollyleaf as her deputy. The black warrior has been the only one to remain stoic and level-headed in the face of catastrophe, and she’d come to rely on the younger cat’s strength in the moons to come. Her and Hollyleaf’s views are very different. Where Tawnypelt wants to see a return of the four Clans, Hollyleaf prefers to approach the situation from a more realistic perspective. Splitting their already small and tattered group into four would only hasten their deaths, especially with leaf-bare on the horizon. And with no medicine cats, the cats are scraping by with the most basic herbal knowledge. If there was hope for four Clans to return, they’d have to be content living as one Clan for a time.
Begrudgingly, they ultimately decide that settling in RiverClan’s former camp was the best choice. Not only did RiverClan have sparse woodland, but the river would be their greatest ally when land prey fled into their nests and burrows. With Mintfur, Mallownose, Robinwing, and Grasspelt leading the way, the Remaining begin to rebuild the dens that’d been shredded by shadowy claws. Ivytail shields Cherrykit and Mistkit from the dried blood spattered on the inside of the nursery wall, and makes sure their tender paws don’t step on the shattered shells that’d once lined RiverClan’s nests.
Hollyleaf tries to balance her grief with deputy duties and teaching her new Clanmates about herbs. She too has limited knowledge, but they need to be prepared to survive the winter. Catmint for greencough. Marigold for infected wounds/infection prevention. Cobweb for hemostasis. Bindweed for bone fixation. Blackberries for bee stings. Borage for milk and fevers. Burdock root for rat bites.
With access to Jayfeather’s herb garden, Hollyleaf is able to take some of his herbs, replanting them near where Mothwing had grown her own herbs by the riverside. Leaf-bare comes, but the cats’ herbal knowledge fails when nearly all the catmint is too frostbitten to serve as a reliable remedy. And with their lack of herbal knowledge, they don’t know of any other alternatives. By the time the greencough outbreak sweeps through the Clan, Tawnypelt, Robinwing, Ivytail, Birchfall, Mintfur, and Mistkit are all dead.
Hollyleaf is quick to ascend to leadership, and travels to the Moonpool herself. She receives her nine lives from Firestar, Sandstorm, Brackenfur, Leafpool, Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw, Jayfeather, Willowshine, and Cinderheart. She notices that with the exception of Willowshine, every cat who gave her a life was ThunderClan. Being renamed Hollystar, she chooses Toadfoot to serve as her deputy after Lionblaze reveals that he intends to serve the Clan as their medicine cat.
Hollystar is initially shocked, as she was blind to the warning signs. Since losing Cinderheart in particular, Lionblaze’s love for hunting and patrolling had diminished significantly. He spent his days hanging around the garden where Jayfeather and Mothwing’s herb store laid. He was gentler with his words and softer with his paws. Not to mention that his power had disappeared mysteriously after the battle’s conclusion. Of course- Lionblaze no longer had a reason to be a warrior. Lionblaze chooses to announce his intentions to the Clan, and after he receives training and counseling from the spirits of Leafpool and Jayfeather, he becomes a full medicine cat. He even abandons his warrior name, and renames himself Lionflower.
The Clan stabilizes under Hollystar’s steadfast and confident leadership. Cherrykit becomes a warrior named Cherryheart, and Foxleap and Thistleheart have become mates. Unexpectedly, Nightcloud and Toadfoot have kits together, though they only do so to ensure the future of their Clan. They’re good friends, but romance was never really in the cards for either of them. One of the NightToad kits, Breezepaw, becomes Lionflower’s apprentice. About two years into LionClan’s existence, Toadfoot announces that the time of four Clans must return. After a majority of the Clan agrees, LionClan breaks back into the original four Clans.
Hollystar remains leader of ThunderClan, with Toadfoot becoming ShadowClan’s leader, Mallownose becoming RiverClan’s leader, and Nightcloud becoming WindClan’s leader. They all earn their nine lives and names. Hollystar names Tigerheart as her deputy, Mallowstar names Grasspelt, Toadstar names Starlingwing, and Nightstar names Sunstrike.
Although life is at first considerably difficult, the years following become easier on all the Clans. Lionflower and Breezesong, his former apprentice, go on to properly train apprentices to take up the mantle of medicine cats in ShadowClan and RiverClan, while Breezesong leaves ThunderClan to join his mother in WindClan. Foxleap and Thistleheart have since raised four kits in WindClan, named Dustflight, Meadowshine, Sedgeflower, and Fernfeather. Hollystar visits the Moonpool often to visit her StarClan mate, Willowshine, and Lionflower does the same with Cinderheart.
This is so, so good

12 Flowers to Plant for Bees & Pollinators
The bee population is more at risk than ever. You may have seen recommendations that you save dandelions for bees in spring, but what else can you plant that bees will love? Planting for our pollinators is so important for not only them, but us too! Here's a few ideas to get you started, but tailor your planting to your location and your native pollinators. All the plants in this list also provide for us with food and medicine.
1. Bee Balm: An excellent flower for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Bee balm is also edible and medicinal and can be used in a tea to alleviate cold symptoms.
2. Borage: Great for companion planting since it repels bad bugs while attracting pollinators like bees. Borage flowers are edible and are used medicinally for the respiratory and cardiovascular system in moderation. Borage contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which can be harmful to the liver over time when ingested internally. Avoiding using borage for those pregnant or nursing, children under 12, and those with liver disease/damage/problems.
3. Calendula: Bees love calendula! Super easy to grow and readily self seeds. In mild climates calendula can grow right through the winter and in cold climates they’re one of the first flowers in the spring, making them a super important forage for bees! The flowers are edible and highly medicinal. It’s great for the skin and makes a great salve.
4. Chives: Easy to grow, come back year after year, and bees love their pink blossoms. Chives are a great culinary herb that grows through the spring and summer.
5. Lavender: An important staple for bees and other pollinators thanks to it’s long blooming season. Lavender is a tasty edible flower that’s also highly aromatic and wonderfully calming.
6. Mint: Bees and other beneficial insects love mint flowers. Peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, wild mint, lemon balm, the bees love it all! Mint is also of course a great culinary herb and has many medicinal uses, mainly for the digestive system.
7. Oregano: Bees and hummingbirds love oregano and marjoram (a close relative). It’s a perennial herb, great for culinary uses, and also highly medicinal! It has strong antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and is a powerful immune system booster.
8. Rosemary: There are many varieties of rosemary, but all have flowers that bees appreciate. It explodes with blossoms in the spring. It’s a great herb to use in the kitchen and has some health benefits as well, like being great for the hair and scalp.
9. Sage: Garden sage and wild varieties have purple and blue flower spikes that attract all sorts of pollinators. It’s easy to grow and will live for years without much input. It’s a popular culinary herb with medicinal benefits of being anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-fungal, and helps heal colds and sore throats.
10. Sunflower: Big and beautiful! Their bright flowers create a landing pad for bees. They’re full of pollen that the bees love and also provide us with yummy sunflower seeds. Sunflower petals are also edible and have some medicinal uses.
11. Thyme: The tiny blossoms of thyme are highly regarded by bees and other pollinators. It’s also a kitchen herb that comes in many varieties and also a powerful medicinal plant that's great for the immune system.
12. Yarrow: The broad and semi-flat flowers are easy for bees to rest on while gathering pollen. It comes in multiple colors and will readily self seed, but it does have a bit of spreading habit so keep this in mind! Yarrow is edible but bitter so most use it medicinally for it’s wound healing and blood clotting abilities, reducing fevers, and helping heal urinary tract infections.

Panic! Lyrics & Flowers
About a year ago I finished an art project where I took a lyric from every Fall Out Boy album and paired those with flowers that have a similar meaning (link to post below), and around the same time I started the same type of project but with Panic! at the Disco. Each piece is done with ink on a 2.5x2.5 inch canvas.
First, let’s talk about what I did differently. With the FOB pieces and filled in a lot of the petals, or at least added some detail, but with these pieces I decided against that and kept the flowers as simple as possible. Doing this made the text much easier to focus on and read.
Tumblr media
“Stop‌ ‌stalling,‌ ‌make‌ ‌a‌ ‌name‌ ‌for‌ ‌yourself‌”, ‌London‌ ‌Beckoned‌ ‌Songs‌ ‌About‌ ‌Money‌ ‌Written‌ ‌by‌ ‌Machines, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Paired with laurel which represents accomplishment, glory, and success.
While I am happy with how this piece turned out I wish I had left more negative space around the text so it wasn’t so symmetrical.
Tumblr media
“I wasn't born to be a skeleton”, She's a Handsome Woman, Pretty. Odd. Paired with lilacs which represent confidence.
As much as I love lilacs, I really am not fond of painting them. Especially at this size. I have the same problem with this piece as the last one, I wish I had left a bit more negative space around the text. I find it to be a bit too symmetrical and I probably could have put a bit more planning into the placement of the flowers.
Tumblr media
“Show them all you're not the ordinary type”, Let's Kill Tonight, Vices and Virtues. Paired with borage which represents speaking your mind, and courage.
This one I would for sure redo. I was using a different brush for this piece and I had a lot of trouble getting used to it which resulted in inconsistent line size, and a majority of the lines just being too thick in general.
Tumblr media
“I won't give up without a fight”, This is Gospel, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! Paired with columbine which represent the resolve to win.
This one I actually had to redo! A few months after completing all of these pieces I noticed I had painted the wrong flower for this lyric. Having to redo this one made me quite sad because I was really happy with how the original turned out. Because I redid this one several months later, I had already started some other pieces and changed my composition method regarding the flowers, so this one doesn’t quite fit in with the other Panic! Pieces. Despite that I’m still really happy with how this one came out.
Tumblr media
“All the memories that we make will never change”, Golden Days, Death of a Bachelor. Paired with forget-me-not to represent memories.
While I’m not super happy with how the text turned out on this piece I am really happy with the flowers. There are some petals where the lines could be cleaner but overall I’m really proud of this one.
Tumblr media
“Some only live to die, I'm alive to fly higher”, King of the Clouds, Pray for the Wicked. Paired with scarlet lilies which represent high souled aspirations.
This piece suffers from the same problem as the final FOB piece, I got too impatient and wanted to finally finish the project so I’m not super proud of the flowers on this one. I think I could have done better. Though the text on this piece is probably the one I’m most proud of out of all of them.
_________________
In my post with the FOB pieces I mentioned that I was also working on the same project but with TOP and MCR albums as well, and I’ve completed the TOP pieces and just need to post them. The MCR pieces have not been started yet as I need to give my back a break and will be starting on them next week.
If you want to see the FOB pieces I did you can check it out here
If you want to see the TOP and MCR pieces when I post them but don’t want to follow me here I have an instagram you can check out here
Finally, when I posted the FOB pieces @another-emo-blog (hopefully it’s the same emo blog) sent me an ask requesting I tag them the next time I post a project like this. Well I didn’t forget, I just took forever to finish them because life.

Chapter Seventeen
When the last scraps of prey had been picked over, the rest of the SkyClan cats drifted away. Only one of them—a young orange she-cat—stayed close to their leader; she was coughing so hard that she could barely stay on her paws.
Alderpaw watched in shock as Darktail swung one huge paw and thumped the young she-cat hard on her back.
“Stop that racket now!” he snarled, his blue eyes blazing with fury.
The she-cat gave him a frightened look. She wasn’t coughing anymore, though Alderpaw didn’t think that the swat on her back had down her any good. She was obviously struggling to suppress her coughs.
Alderpaw padded up and dipped his head politely to Darktail. “It sounds as though she’s suffering from a common cold,” he mewed, indicating the she-cat with a wave of his tail. “But it might be whitecough. She should see your medicine cat.”
Both SkyClan cats gave him a blank look. Alderpaw felt as though he missed his footing in the dark and plunged into icy water.
Struggling to control his shock, he continued. “If it is whitecough, it’s not that big of a deal, but it could easily turn to greencough. Some tansy should help her out.”
Darktail continued to stare at him with a blank expression, as if he didn’t even know what tansy was. Alderpaw’s confusion deepened. Sandstorm mentioned that they had a medicine cat—Echosong. So what happened to her? And why has their leader never heard of a basic herb like tansy?
Meanwhile, the young she-cat started coughing again, backing away from her till leader as if she was afraid he’d hit her once more.
“I’ll be back soon,” Alderpaw mewed, nodding to the two cats. “I’m going to find some tansy.”
He headed for the path that would take him to the cliff top, meaning to search for herbs among the rough grass and bushes there. But before he reached it, he heard his name being called. He glanced down and spotted Jayflight near a den low in the cliff wall. Because of the jutting line of the rocks, it was very close to the water, and a few wilting plants grew close beside it. Jayflight was sitting near the entrance of the den, his paws brushing against some plants that grew close by the den.
Alderpaw bounded down and sat next to Jayflight, sniffing at the herbs. “Tansy, sorrel, yarrow, and chervil,” he meowed, looking up at Jayflight. “But they don’t look like they’ve been touched for a couple moons. And it didn’t seem like Darktail even knew what a medicine cat was.”
Jayflight shrugged. “These cats are strange, Alderpaw,” he meowed. “Be wary about Darktail.”
Maybe Echosong died without training an apprentice. His heart was pounding, and half of him hoped that was true, even though it seemed terrible to hope something like that happened.
“Well, one of the cats here needs tansy,” he meowed, leaning over and tearing off a few stems. “I’ll bring her some. You can check out this den while I’m at it.” Jayflight nodded and stepped into the den as Alderpaw padded back toward the rock pile.
When he returned, he discovered the orange she-cat on her side, revealing a shock of white belly fur. The other SkyClan cats were keeping their distance, going about their business without even glancing a their sick Clanmate, who was rasping and spluttering. It’s whitecough for sure. And her cough is even worse than I thought it was. Anxiety made Alderpaw’s belly churn.
Alderpaw dropped the tansy in front of the orange cat. “Here, eat this,” he mewed softly, remembering Leafpool’s silky voice when she helped suffering cats.
The she-cat looked up at him, her green eyes widening in confusion and a trace of fear. “I will get better, won’t I?” she wheezed, her voice raspy from coughing. “I don’t want to be exiled.”
Horror touched Alderpaw like a frozen claw. Gently he laid his forepaw on the she-cat’s flank. “What’s your name?” he asked.
“Flame,” the she-cat choked out, before getting cut off by another spasm of coughing.
“My name is Alderpaw. I’m learning to be a medicine cat in my own Clan. I promise you, the tansy will help.”
As Flame began to chew the tansy leaves, Alderpaw stepped back to give her some breathing space.
“Will that work?” a rough voice rasped in his ear.
Alderpaw’s fur fluffed out and he whipped around to see Darktail’s stern eyes glaring at him. Once more eyes, his ice blue gaze shook him to the core. “Tansy usually clears up whitecough quite quickly,” he replied, trying to sound reassuring. “But as I said earlier, if whitecough is left untreated for too long, she would catch greencough—then Flame would be in real trouble. She’s lucky I was able to find tansy so quick.”
Darktail began to look interested; Alderpaw guessed he had never heard the names of these illnesses before. Maybe in SkyClan they’re called something different.
“So what cures greencough?” the white-and-black tom asked, not sounding as if he was at all concerned for his Clanmates.
“You can still use tansy,” Alderpaw told him, “but catmint is much more useful, if you can get your paws on it.”
“Hmm . . .” Darktail twitched his whiskers. “And what about wounds? Will this ‘catmint’ cure wounds too?”
“No.” Alderpaw tried not to show that he was getting frustrated. He’s like a kit who crawled into the medicine den for the first time. Doesn’t this cat know anything? “For wounds you use cobwebs to stop the bleeding, and comfrey root for the pain. Marigold or horsetail if the wound gets infected.”
Darktail nodded. “And for fever?”
“Er . . .” For a moment Alderpaw couldn’t remember. This is worse than being tested by Leafpool. I wish Jayflight were here right now so he could help me out! “Borage leaves,” he mewed at last. “And poppy seeds can help the feverish cat sleep. But Darktail . . .” He couldn’t resist asking the question: “Don’t you treat your sick cats?”
For a heartbeat Darktail looked confused. Then he straightened himself. “Of course we do,” he replied with a flick of his tail. “We just do it . . . differently. Why should all Clans behave the same?”
Because we all come from the same place, Alderpaw thought, but he couldn’t bring himself to say the words aloud. He hadn’t mentioned anything to Darktail about how the SkyClan cats had been driven from the forest, and he was reluctant to say anything now.
Bramblestar told me how terrible it was for SkyClan. The other Clans were not wrong to share their territory. SkyClan might blame us for it, even though it was so long ago.
But Alderpaw still couldn’t understand why Darktail seemed so unfamiliar with the way Clans lived and worked. Have they really wandered so far away from the warrior code?
Then understanding started to grow inside Alderpaw, like a flower unfolding from a bud. Perhaps the prophecy meant something different from what he had thought at first. Maybe SkyClan was “in shadow” not just because they lived in a distant and forgotten place, far away from any other Clan life, but because they had lost their connection to the warrior code, and everything that made Clan cats different from rogues.
So it must be my task to guide them back again, and clear the sky!
Alderpaw’s whiskers twitched as happiness and understanding flooded through him. “If you like,” he meowed to Darktail, “I’ll take some of your cats on a tour of your territory to see what herbs we can find, and show them what they’re used for. Of course,” he added, sounding modest, “I’m only an apprentice.”
Darktail seemed unconcerned by Alderpaw’s inexperience. He gave a nod of approval. “Rain and Raven!” he yowled.
The two long-furred cats sprang up from where they were sitting: Raven was laying with a couple other she-cats and Rain was at the edge of the river, where she was talking to Needlepaw. They bounded over to their leader. “What is it, Darktail,” Raven asked, with a respectful dip of her head.
“Go with this cat,” Darktail ordered, indicating Alderpaw with a flick of his tail. “He’s going to look for herbs and tell you what to do with them. Listen to him carefully—he’s an apprentice.”
“Yes, Darktail,” Rain responded, though she looked as confused as Alderpaw felt. Darktail said “apprentice” as if it was . . . important.
“I’ll come too!” Needlepaw added, sidling up to them, and giving Rain a smile. “I’d like to get a better look at the gorge.”
Alderpaw couldn’t imagine why Needlepaw would want to see more of such a barren, dirty place, but there was no point in objecting. Needlepaw is weird anyway. Nothing she does makes sense! His smiled as he thought of the mischievous apprentice’s strange personality.
Raven took the lead as the four cats headed downstream, passing the den that Alderpaw was sure must have been Echosong’s at one time.
With every paw step Alderpaw began to feel more optimistic. If he could teach these cats how to treat illness, they might start to show more compassion for one another, instead of heartlessly ignoring sick cats like Flame. And Ember. He shuddered as he thought of what might have happened to the queen if Lionblaze hadn't helped her. They would start to feel and behave more like a real Clan. And then they could return to the forest as real allies.
This is the first stage of completing the quest—to help SkyClan find the way back to Clan life.
Alderpaw shifted restlessly in his den, unable to sleep. He kept thinking about the tour of the territory he had taken with Needlepaw, Rain, and Raven, and how much Raven needed to be taught. They had found yarrow and more tansy, and Raven seemed to think that those two herbs could cure everything. At least Rain seemed to learn a lot about the herbs while on the journey here.
“You’ll need to search for herbs on either side of the gorge,” Alderpaw had pointed out. “And maybe even travel farther than your usually hunting territory. There are lots of different diseases that can strike a cat, and they need different herbs and different kinds of treatment.”
Raven had shrugged, seeming okay with that. “It might make more sense for Darktail to lead us to new territory soon,” she had meowed, and Rain nodded in agreement.
Now Alderpaw had curled up more tightly and tried to will himself into sleep. He was desperate for another vision, perhaps a visit from Sandstorm or Ravenpaw to reassure him that everything was happening how it was supposed to. He knew deep within himself that there was something not right about SkyClan. However hard he tried to tell himself that it was only because they had lived apart from the other Clans so long, he couldn’t shake the feeling that all this was somehow wrong. Was there a reason he hadn’t had any visions since they arrived in the gorge.
Then a reason occurred to him, and he shivered all over, wanting to mewl in terror like a tiny, lost kit. What if StarClan can’t reach me in this place?
As Alderpaw’s shuddering died away, he was distracted by the sound of voices. He had already discovered how the walls of the gorge trapped sound, so it was useless trying to have a quiet conversation, or say anything they didn’t want the SkyClan cats to hear. He wrapped his paws over his ears to blot out the sound, only to raise his head in alert as he heard Darktail’s voice.
“It will be easy.”
As silently as he could, Alderpaw edged toward the entrance of the den and peered out into the darkness. There was just enough light from the moon for him to make out Darktail and Rain, and Raven a few tail-lengths away.
“I don’t know . . .,” Raven mewed doubtfully. “The journey will be long and hard. I’ve heard stories about huge Thunderpaths out there, and how many cats lose their lives on them.”
“Thunderpaths hold no fear for us,” Darktail responded with a dismissive wave of his tail.
Rain looked as if she was about to say something, but she kept her mouth shut.
Hope thrilled through Alderpaw. Maybe the SkyClan cats are deciding to leave tomorrow, to journey with us to the lake and reunite with the other Clans.
He rose to his paws intending to join them and tell him how happy he was about their plan, but before he could even leave the den, the SkyClan cats split up, padding off in three different directions.
Movement in the shadows caught Alderpaw’s eyes, and to his astonishment he spotted Needlepaw, emerging from the shelter of a boulder and padding up to Rain. Until then he hadn’t realized that she wasn’t asleep in the den with him and his Clanmates.
“It sounds like you’re close to making up your minds,” Needlepaw purred to Rain.
The big gray she-cat looked down at her, and Alderpaw saw a flash of amusement in her green eyes. “It’s rude to eavesdrop,” she meowed. It was one of the few times that Alderpaw heard emotion in the she-cat’s usually monotone meow.
“I hardly had a choice,” Needlepaw was not at all intimidated; her voice was even playful. “You’re not exactly subtle in how you go about your plotting.”
Rain murmured something in reply, but because she turned to walk away, Alderpaw couldn’t make out the words.
Needlepaw pattered alongside the SkyClan, Alderpaw emerged from the den and followed them as they headed upstream toward the rock pile. He held his breath, trying to keep as silent as possible. Although he kept his distance, he could still hear Needlepaw’s teasing purr.
“Life in other Clans are different, Rain. There are . . . rules.”
“You told me about them on the journey,” Rain told her, nodding her head.
Needlepaw laughed. “There are much more rules than what we told you,” she purred. “You, Darktail, and the others will have to learn them if you want to fit in.”
“Everything will work out, Needle,” Rain responded, a hint of affection to her meow. “Just the way it’s meant to.”
Alderpaw couldn’t decide whether the long-furred she-cat’s voice was hopeful or amused, but either way, he wasn’t sure he liked it. I’ve heard enough, he thought, turning back toward the den.
But as he turned, his paw dislodged a pebble that clinked against the hard rock ground of the gorge. Needlepaw and Rain both whipped their heads to stare in his direction.
“Who’s there?” Rain asked, her voice sharp.
“Only me,” Alderpaw squeaked, startled. He turned to them and nodded to them. Rain seemed to relax when she saw them. “I . . . er . . . I just came out to make dirt.”
Not waiting for any comment, he scampered off into the darkness, panting hard as he reached the den where his Clanmates still slept peacefully. His hopeful feelings had evaporated, the flutter in his chest replaced by a heavy weight that seemed to be pushing from the inside, trying to force him to the ground.
Sup I’m still anxious but I decided to upload today since I don’t want to be a baby oh well. Anyway, sorry for the late chapter

"Plant life is rather nice, useful too~ I've lived for a very long time, long before medicinal drugs were common, so when healing magic wasn't an option using plants was pretty normal. And even though I use modern medicine now, I still will use some of the old ways every so often."
"Things like Burdock Roots. The pulp of the root can be pretty effective for halting and even curing infections from bites, especially rat bites. Juniper berries are great for soothing a stomach ache, can even help with shortness of breath. Lavender is a good cure for fevers, same with Borage leaves and Watermint. And then you have Goldenrod and Dock that are great for soothing and healing wounds."
"But on the flip side, you have Yewberries, also known as deathberries. Eating a few can kill you in minutes. Foxglove seeds can cause paralysis, heart failure and can even cause a coma and death. Holly berries cause vomiting, and can lead to death if too many are eaten... oh and Water hemlock, which causes pain and foaming at the mouth."
"Truly amazing things... Not the mention that plants can also be carnivorous. The venus flytrap or the pitcher plant, they eat insects! Guess they grew tired of sunbathing and wanted to chew. Roses have their thorns, cactus with their spines... and fungus is a whole other beast all together... Sorry I think I rambled on enough. Point being, I love and respect nature and all it has to give. And I will gladly put it to good use if I can~"

A decoction of fenugreek seed is a strong stimulant. Simmer 1 1/2 tsp (8ml) seed in 1 cup (225 ml) water for 10 minutes and drink three times a day. A tsp (5 ml) aniseed or honey will improve the taste. Another powerful stimulant is found in the flowering top of goat's rue (Galega officinalis): increases in milk flow of up to 50 percent have been recorded. Infuse 1 tsp (5 ml) dried leaves in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water for 10 minutes and drink twice a day.
Bruises and Sprains
Apply distilled witch hazel (purchased from a chemist) with sterile cotton wool as soon as possible to small bumps and bruises. This will halt the swelling. Comfrey oil or ointment is good for messy scrapes, bruises, and sprains. A poultice of comfrey leaves (Symphytum officinale) will reduce bruising and speed healing of sprains and fractures. It's best not used on deep wounds, as comfrey is such a powerful tissue healer that the surface skin may heal before the wound has healed deeper down. Comfrey also encourages the good formation of scar tissue. Both a lotion of St John's wort (Hypericum perforalum) and arnica (Arnica montana) ointment is excellent for sprains and bruises, especially if there is any pain or inflammation of the skin. Caution: Do not use arnica where the skin is broken. An ointment of calendula petals, agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) or elder leaves (Sombucus nigra) is soothing and healing for bruises, sprains and other minor wounds.
Burns, Minor
Immediately apply the cool inside surface of an aloe vera leaf to reduce pain, speed healing and leave a protective seal against infection. Later, apply calendula as a cool compress or ointment to soothe and heal. Major burns are an emergency: summon professional help at once. Cool the burn with cool (not ice-cold) water while waiting, and give the patient 6 drops Bach Flower Rescue Remedy and reassure him.
Chilblains and cold limbs
To warm hands and feet, massage gently with warmed macerated oil of honeysuckle flowers (Lonicera caprifolium). This will bring an increased flow of blood to the surface skin. For a foot, bath to improve the circulation of cold feet and help chilblains, which are caused by poor circulation, use an infusion of 1 tbsp (15 ml) freshly ground mustard seed to 4 pints (2 liters) water. Cayenne seed powder is also a powerful stimulant to the circulatory system and helps blood flow to the extremities. In an ointment, it can be used in moderation for unbroken chilblains. Elder leaf (Sambucus nigra) ointment is useful for chilblains. Heat 1 part fresh leaves with 2 parts of petroleum jelly until the leaves are crisp. Strain and label for storage. To improve bad circulation, drink rosehip or horsetail (Equisetum arvense) or buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) tea daily to strengthen small capillaries. Some spices and strongly flavored herbs, such as black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, freshly grated root ginger, garlic, marjoram, rosemary, and thyme, improve circulation. Include them frequently in your diet, especially in the winter months.
Colds and fevers
To protect against colds, eat or take the juice of a raw clove of garlic three times a day. Essential oils are very efficient at destroying harmful bacteria and viruses. They can also be used in steam inhalants or as a room spray. Rosehip tea, said to be high in vitamin C, can be used to build resistance to colds and other infections. Cayenne powder is also excellent at warding off colds as it strengthens and stimulates the circulatory and digestive system. Infuse 1/2 - 1 tsp (3 —5 ml) cayenne powder in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain and take 1 tbsp (15 ml) of this mixture topped up with hot water when needed or before each meal. At the first sign of a cold, take a mixture of elderflower (Sambucus nigra), peppermint (Mentha piperita) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Infuse 1/2 tsp (3 ml) of each together in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water for 20 minutes. Strain, add 1 tsp (5 ml) honey and 1/4 tsp (2ml) cayenne pepper. This should decrease the intensity and the discomfort of a cold or flu. If the mixture benefits you, the herbs are worth storing as a dried blend for winter use. Another remedy to take at the earliest possible moment is 9 small horehound leaves (Marrubium vulgare) chopped finely and eaten raw with 1 tbsp (15 ml) honey. Repeat as necessary. To fight colds and flu, take hot lemon and honey as often as desired as lemon has antibacterial properties. Take frequent hot drinks of elderflower (Sambucus nigra), peppermint (Mentha piperita) or yarrow (Achillea millefolium) tea to promote perspiration and to reduce the temperature. Elderflower is also useful for reducing any nasal inflammation from catarrh. If this is accompanied by a penetrating chill, add grated root ginger or cayenne. Black pepper sprinkled over food also has a restorative effect, or you could take an infusion of mustard seed, 1/4 tsp (2ml) powder infused for 5 minutes in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water, three times a day, or add 4 pints (2 litres) of mustard infusion to bathwater. For catarrh and flu, goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) is good because it is antiseptic, expels catarrh and soothes inflammation. Infuse 2 tsp (10ml) dried flowering stalks in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water for 10 minutes and drink a cup (225 ml) three times a day. Goldenseal root (Hydrastis canadensis) is also excellent for its healing and tonic powers on the mucous membranes. Drink an infusion of 1/5 - 1 tsp (3—5ml) of powdered root in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water three times a day. Do not take this during pregnancy. You can also try a hot infusion of borage (Borago officinalis), coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), comfrey (Symphytum officinale), or ground ivy (Glecoma hederacea) to relieve catarrh. Relieve stuffiness by inhaling the vapors from a steam bath of chamomile flowers (Matricaria recutita) or eucalyptus leaves (Eucalyptus globulus). A pinch of basil taken as snuff can bring back your sense of smell. When your temperature has returned to normal, drink a warm infusion of clivers (Galium aparine) three times a day to continue a mild perspiration action, help prevent gastric disturbance and promote restful sleep. Begin taking vegetable juices and progress to homemade vegetable soup, fresh fruit, and salads. Reintroduce heavier foods slowly to avoid overloading the digestive system when it is still vulnerable. Horehound tea restores an appetite that may need stimulating after flu. If lethargy or depression follows, take lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) or vervain (Verbena Officinalis) tea. If this persists after a few days, seek professional advice.
Colic
First choice for children is dill water. If you anticipate digestive discomfort, try giving the baby a teaspoonful before she or he feeds. Otherwise, give a teaspoonful as required.
Constipation
Long-term constipation, or any unusual changes in bowel habits, should be discussed with a medical herbalist or doctor. Roughage in the diet and regular exercise are important for healthy functioning bowels, while tension and emotional worries can contribute to constipation. Herbs can be used for short-term relief but underlying causes should be addressed. Syrup of figs is a valuable remedy, taken as required. An infusion of crushed flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) has a purgative action which brings relief: drink 1 cup (225 ml) morning and evening. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a mild and pleasant laxative. Chew root as desired or make a decoction of 1 tsp (5 ml) root in 1 cup (225 ml) water and take three times a day. Stewed rhubarb in moderate doses is a gentle laxative for children; large doses cause a more powerful reaction. Rosehip tea is also a mild laxative. Use a decoction or infusion with halved hips, but strain through filter paper to remove the seeds and tiny hairs which are an irritant to the body. Drink whenever necessary.
Coughs
To fight bronchial infections, eat raw garlic cloves for their strong antibiotic content. To help dispel fluid and mucus from the lungs and air passages, horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is the first choice. Drink a hot standard infusion three times a day. Another important herb in the treatment of lung problems, coughs and colds, and asthma is coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara). An infusion of the leaves and flowers will soothe the bronchi, encourage tissue healing and protect the delicate mucous membranes from further irritations. To ease cough spasms and help expel mucus, make cowslip flower (Primula veris) syrup or decoct cowslip root, simmering for 5 minutes, and drink 1 cup (225 ml) three times a day. It can be combined with coltsfoot and aniseed (Pimpinella anisum). Aniseed has an expectorant action and can also help make cough mixture more palatable. For an irritating bronchial cough with a great deal of catarrh, the expectorant, antiseptic action of elecampane root (Inula helenium) along with the soothing effect of its mucilage makes it an excellent remedy, especially for children. Infuse 1 tsp (5 ml) shredded root in 1 cup (225 ml) cold water for 9 hours. Drink it hot three times a day. An irritating cough can also be soothed by an infusion of powdered marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis). It combines well with horehound (Marrubium vulgare) and liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). For dry coughs, combine coltsfoot with horehound and mullein (Verbascum thapsus). To reduce catarrh in the lungs, apply a poultice of freshly ground mustard seed. Mix 4oz (110 g) seeds with warm water to make a thick paste. Apply the paste between two pieces of gauze with the bottom piece dampened so that it does not stick to the skin. Leave for one minute only. If skin is reddened, massage with an appropriate aromatherapy oil or any vegetable oil. Flax seed can be used with mustard to help reduce lung catarrh. A tea of plantain leaves (Plantago major) is a gentle expectorant and the herb is widely cultivated by Russian pharmaceutical companies. A standard infusion of star anise (Illicium verum) has expectorant and antibacterial properties. It mixes well with other cough remedies.
Cuts and abrasions
First clean the cut by soaking in witch hazel diluted with 4 parts, water or an antiseptic herbal infusion; elder leaves (Sombucus nigra) are excellent. A speedy alternative is to add 3 drops thyme or rosemary oil or 1 tsp (3 ml) tincture of calendula to 1 cup (225 ml) hand-hot, boiled water. The antiseptic wash can also be gently swabbed on with a series of sterile cotton wool balls. A dose of 4 drops Bach Flower Rescue Remedy has a calming effect, while an infusion of lady's mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) can be applied as a compress to arrest bleeding. For slow-healing wounds, apply a compress or poultice of comfrey (Symphytum offidnale), self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) or yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Add plantain leaves (Plantago major) for their antibiotic properties. If applying a poultice to an open wound, dip leaves briefly in boiling water to sterilize them. To continue treatment, a soft ointment of comfrey, calendula or agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) is soothing and healing. Cystitis Drink a standard infusion of silver birch leaves (Betula pendula) against cystitis and other infections of the urinary tract, and to remove excess water from the system. It can be combined with bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). A decoction of sweet Joe Pye root (Eupatorium purpureum), drunk three times a day, is helpful for urinary infections including cystitis. A standard infusion of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is antiseptic to the urinary tract and assists recovery from cystitis.
Depression
A lavender flower infusion, taken three times a day, can be effective in clearing depression especially combined with rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) or skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora). Rosemary is useful if your depression results from psychological tension or if you are feeling rundown after an illness. Drink a standard infusion. It also combines well with a skullcap. Take a standard infusion of vervain (Verbena officinalis) to ease depression and melancholy which may follow flu. It also combines well with a skullcap.
Diarrhea (adult)
Sudden, painful diarrhea and chronic diarrhea needs expert medical attention. Other cases are often the body's way of attempting to dump toxic material as fast as possible. Most herbal remedies attempt to assist this action while soothing the bowel and reducing inflammation. Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) has a gentle action that soothes inflamed mucous membranes. Drink an infusion three times daily. The same dose can be taken of agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) and coriander seed infusion.
Diarrhea (children)
Always seek the advice of a trained medical practitioner for persistent children's diarrhea. A standard agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) infusion is a specific herbal remedy for childhood diarrhea, as is a decoction of bistort root (Polygonum bistorta). Either can be drunk, 1 cup (225 ml) three times a day. An infusion of coriander also eases diarrhea safely for children. Use 1 tsp (5 ml) bruised seed infused for 5 minutes and drink before meals or three times a day.
Digestion
Most flavoring and seasoning herbs stimulate the flow of digestive juices in the stomach and intestine, and this increases the efficiency with which fats are broken down into fatty acids and nutrients are absorbed by the body. Classic herb partnerships reflect this benevolent fact: rosemary helps the digestion of fatty lamb, fennel assists the digestion of oily fish and horseradish aids the digestion of beef. Many of the aromatic seeds are useful digestives. Take 1 tbsp (15 ml) ground aniseed boiled in 1 cup (225 ml) milk and drink this twice a day to improve the digestive system. Cardamom increases the flow of saliva and adds a pleasing aroma to digestive mixtures. Take 1 cup (225 ml) of infusion half an hour before each meal. Hot peppermint tea can be taken after a meal. A dish of digestive herbs including aniseed, caraway, dill and fennel seed is sometimes offered at the end of an Indian meal and greatly assists the body to digest rich foods. If there is persistent or severe pain with digestion, consult a medical herbalist or doctor; if there are regular difficulties with indigestion not caused by disease, then rushed eating, an unbalanced diet or tension may be the cause, and it is sensible to consider solutions to these while taking herbs to alleviate the problem.
Earache
Eardrops made from a weak infusion of golden-seal (Hydrastis canadensis) soothe earache. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) can be added to the infusion. Where catarrh of the middle ear is causing tinnitus, an infusion of ground ivy (Glecomu hederacea) flowering stems is helpful.
Eczema, rashes and itchy skin
Make a weak infusion of golden-seal root (Hydrastis canadensis) and use externally as a wash or compress for eczema and itchy skin. The expressed juice of chickweed (Stellaria media) will soothe sores or itchy patches from eczema or psoriasis and will tone and invigorate the skin, while a poultice of crushed flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) brings relief to shingles and psoriasis. For children's eczema and nervous eczema, nettle (Urtica dioica) is specifically recommended by herbalists. Drink an infusion three times a day. For weeping eczema, drink an infusion of the flowering tops of the heartsease (Viola tricolor) three times a day. It combines well with nettle and red clover (Trifolium pretense). Comfrey oil often brings relief from patches of itchy rough skin and evening primrose oil can help.
Flatulence
Seeds of aniseed, caraway or fennel are all effective at expelling wind but even more so in combination. Infuse crushed mixed seed and drink a cup (225 ml) slowly 30 minutes before each meal. Many spice seeds help disperse wind; cloves or allspice can be chewed or infused as often as desired. Black pepper sprinkled on food removes wind. Infusions of root ginger, cardamom and coriander have pleasant aromas and relieve griping pains of wind. Star anise (Illicium verum) dispels wind and is often included with dill and fennel seed in colic preparations for young babies. Take a standard infusion three times a day. Lemon balm (Melissa offidnalis) relieves flatulent spasms, and a dose of 1/4 - 1/2 tsp (1—3 ml) powdered angelica root (Angelica archangelica) will quickly expel gas from the stomach and bowel with a gentle action that is safe for children.
Headlice
Combine 25 drops of rosemary oil, 25 drops of lavender oil, 13 drops of geranium (Pelargonium) oil and 12 drops of eucalyptus oil in 3 fl oz (75 ml) vegetable oil. Divide the hair into small sections and saturate each section with the mixture down to the roots. Pile long hair on top of the head ensuring that every bit is oiled. Wrap plastic around the head and behind the ears to stop the oils from evaporating. Make sure that small children cannot move the plastic anywhere near the nose or mouth and restrict breathing. Leave it on for 2 hours. Remove the plastic, add shampoo and rub in well, rinse thoroughly and comb through with a fine nit-comb. Repeat three days later.
Hemorrhoids
The first choice for mild hemorrhoids is pilewort or lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria). It shrinks and soothes the swollen veins around the anus. Drink a standard infusion of the root or apply an ointment made with a strong infusion. For bleeding hemorrhoids, apply an ointment of self-heal (Prunella vulgaris). An infusion of horse chestnut fruits (Aesculus hippocastanum) drunk three times a day or applied as a compress will tone and strengthen veins and help heal hemorrhoids.
Hangover
Lemon in water or in orange juice for extra vitamin C, hot peppermint or wild thyme tea can alleviate the discomfort. A drink of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and elderflower (Sambucus nigra) tea will help the body to eliminate toxins.
Hay fever
Sufferers of hay fever and other allergies may benefit from an infusion of goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea). Take half a cup (125 ml) four times a day. The irritated mucous membranes are relieved and soothed by drinking a warm infusion of hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), lavender (Lavandula species), marjoram (Origanum marjorana) or thyme (Thymus vulgaris). Apply cold compresses of witch hazel diluted in 4 parts boiled water to soothe the eyes. Hot mullein flower (Verbascum thapsus) tea and eyebright (Euphrasia rostkoviana) tea will help eliminate excess mucus, and eyebright will reduce redness around the eyes. Drink three times a day. Red and sore eyelids may result from other conditions, if symptoms persist, consult a qualified herbalist.
Headaches and migraines
Herbs may bring relief though they will not remove the cause. Feverfew leaf (Tanacetum parthenium) has justifiably become the primary remedy for migraines. A small to medium, fresh or frozen, the leaf is eaten between slices of bread (it can cause mouth ulcers in very sensitive people) three times a day has been found to reduce the intensity or frequency of 70 percent of migraines (usually in sufferers who gain relief from warmth applied to the head). Its action is cumulative and can take up to six months to show results. Do not take during pregnancy as it can stimulate the uterus. Alternatively, take half a cup (125 ml) of leaf tea twice a day to reduce the pain of migraines. Lavender (Lavandula species) is useful for stress-related headaches and combines well with valerian (Valeriana officinalis). Drink an infusion of lavender flowers three times a day. A standard infusion of valerian is useful in tension headaches when it combines well with skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora).
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is a serious condition that must be monitored by a qualified medical person. Ripe hawthorn berries (Crataegus monogyna) are a gentle yet powerful tonic for the heart and circulation, bringing both low and high blood pressure back to normal when used over a long period. Infuse 2 tsp (10ml) berries for 20 minutes in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water and drink three times a day for an extended period. For high blood pressure, hawthorn combines well in an infusion with lime blossom (Tilia cordata) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Yarrow reduces high blood pressure by dilating peripheral blood vessels. Chronic hypertension responds well to 1 cup (225 ml) dandelion leaves (Taraxacum officinale) infusion taken three times a day. Garlic is reliable, but it will take four weeks for any drop in blood pressure. Eat raw cloves up to six times a day. Insomnia A cup (225ml) of hop (Humulus lupulus) tea taken before retiring to bed is a useful sedative for insomnia except for anyone suffering from depression. It combines well with valerian (Valeriana officinalis) which reduces tension and anxiety, and passionflower leaves (Passiflora incarnata). Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) tea and catnip (Nepeta cataria) tea are traditional relaxing bedtime drinks that will reduce anxiety and promote restful sleep. Passionflower tea and orange blossom tea can also help insomniacs.
Kidney and Liver Complaints
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is the ideal balanced diuretic as it supplies potassium, a substance lost during diuretic action. Decoct 1 tbsp (15 ml) root in 1 cup (225 ml) water and drink three times a day.
Menstrual Cycle
The best remedy for the dull headache, irritability, mild depression, fluid retention or breast discomfort experienced by many women just before their period is evening primrose oil. Tests at a London hospital indicated that 85 percent of those in the trial experienced improvement. The herb (Oenothera biennis) is easy to grow but extracting the oil from the seed is complex, so purchase capsules from a health shop. Those that also contains marine oil are particularly recommended. Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and lime blossom (Tilia cordata) is safe teas to soothe and reduce the discomfort of PMT (premenstrual tension). Take an infusion three times a day to relieve the symptoms. For menstrual cramps drink an infusion of chamomile or valerian (valeriana officinalis) three times a day, or half a cup (125 ml) of feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) tea taken twice a day. For cramps with a feeling of heaviness, a hot infusion of raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus) tea is recommended. To help reduce period pains and excessive bleeding, try lady's mantle leaves (Alchemilla vulgaris), taken in a double-strength infusion three times a day. This also eases changes of the menopause. To help relieve menopausal symptoms, try dried berries of the chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus), which normalize the activity of sex hormones. They are also of benefit in PMT and help to normalize the body's natural balance after taking contraceptive pills. Infuse 1 tsp (5 ml) berries for 15 minutes; drink 1 cup (225 ml) three times a day. Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) reduces the discomfort of menopause. When symptoms include irritability and anxiety, St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is recommended. Drink a standard infusion of flowering tops three times a day.
Muscles and Joints
The Essential oil of fennel is one of several oils which, used in massage oil, will ease muscular pains. The moist inside surface of fresh silver birch bark (Betula pendula) applied over the area will ease painful muscles, while a poultice of mustard seed stimulates circulation and relieves muscular and skeletal pain. An ointment or poultice of wintergreen leaves (Gaultheria procumbens) has painkilling and anti-inflammatory properties that are excellent for chronic muscular problems. If you suffer from muscular cramps, a standard infusion of valerian (Valeriana officinalis) will bring relief.
Nappy Rash
If practicable, expose the baby's bottom to fresh air frequently. A cool compress of calendula or chamomile (Matricaria recutita) can be laid on sore areas for short periods. Use a lotion or ointment made with calendula, comfrey (Symphytum offincinale) or marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) to soothe the skin and promote rapid healing. Nausea Freshly grated ginger or powdered cinnamon bark infused on their own or sprinkled in other teas can be taken whenever necessary to relieve nausea and vomiting. Cloves, as a flavoring in food or drunk as an infusion, will allay nausea and vomiting while stimulating the digestive system. Infuse about 10 cloves in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water for 10 minutes and take as required.
Nervous Tension
Unlike tranquilizers, herbs that work to relax nervous tension also counter stress by reviving and toning the central nervous system. The two finest treatments are skullcap flowering top (Scutellaria lateriflora), which is suitable for a wide range of nervous complaints and valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), which is suitable for nervous spasms and tremors, phobias, insomnia, and restlessness. Fortunately, they work well together. Take an infusion individually or in combination. Take 1 cup (225 ml) infusion up to three times a day or half a cup (125 ml) every three hours in times of great stress, but not for long periods of time. A standard infusion of borage leaves (Borago officinalis) is a restorative tonic to the adrenal glands, which are increasingly exposed to stress. Borage flowers and leaves in wine have a traditional reputation for bolstering courage. The combination seems to cause a significant rise in the blood-adrenalin level, and a wine-glassful (150ml) will relieve nervous tension during times of stress. After a hectic day, try drinking a tea of ginseng (Panax ginseng), lime blossom (Tilia cordata) or lavender (Lavandula species) to calm and tone the nervous system. Lime and lavender combine well to combat nervous exhaustion, while lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) relieves tension and stressful states with mild antidepressant action. It combines well with lavender flowers and lime blossom. Take a cup (225 ml) of mixed teas morning, evening and when required. Wood betony (Stachys officinalis) strengthens the central nervous system and is mildly sedative, being especially good for headaches and neuralgia of a nervous origin. Take 1 cup (225 ml) tea three times a day or combine it with a skullcap. For relaxants, try chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) which can be drunk as desired, and cowslip (Primula veris), which is a relaxing sedative for stress-related tension. Make an infusion of the petals and drink 1 cup (225 ml) three times a day. It can be combined with lime blossom or skullcap. To ease the tension a standard infusion of St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) has pain-reducing and sedative properties, making it useful for anxiety-related conditions unless there is also depression. Rosemary, on the other hand, is a stimulant to the nervous system and useful for psychological tension which is causing depression.
Rheumatism and Arthritis
The causes of these ailments are complex, and a qualified herbalist should be consulted to discover which aspects of diet or lifestyle may be contributing to the problem. Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) has been found to be effective in many cases: it appears to detoxify the body and to stimulate the body's immune system. So far, no harmful side-effects have been discovered but it can be nauseous. Decoct I —1 tsp (3 —5 ml) root in 1 cup (225 ml) water and boil for 15 minutes. Drink three times a day for at least a month to assess its effect. To treat rheumatoid arthritis, try an infusion of celery seed, which helps to counter the acid in the blood. Take 1 cup (225 ml) three times a day. It works well combined with dandelion root (Taraxacum offidnale) or devil's claw. A standard infusion of valerian (Valeriana officinalis) will relieve the pain of rheumatism, and a double-strength infusion of chickweed (Stellaria media) steeped for 5 minutes has brought relief to some. One of the beneficial side-effects noticed by a significant number of patients using feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) to treat migraine was a reduction in their pain from arthritis. Try a dose of 1 leaf in a sandwich three times a day for up to six months (but not during pregnancy). Essential oils such as rosemary, applied in massage oil, can bring relief to rheumatic and arthritic pains (see p. 231). Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) ointment contains useful painkilling and anti-inflammatory ingredients, arnica (Arnica montana) ointment reduces discomfort, and a compress of cayenne pepper infusion eases pain by increasing circulation.
Skin Ulcers
The fruit of the fig tree has strong antiseptic and disinfectant properties. Apply a poultice of dried figs to chronic leg ulcers. A poultice of comfrey leaves (Symphytum officinale) has given remarkable results in many cases of chronic varicose ulcers and is more beneficial if combined with the soothing properties of marshmallow (Althaea offidnalis). Calendula petals, applied either as a compress of the infusion or as an ointment, reduce inflammation and speed healing.
Sleep Problems (children)
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) tea is a safe and gentle sedative for children and traditionally recommended for those having nightmares. Give 1 cup (225 ml) of warm infusion half an hour before bedtime and remember to take the child to the toilet again just before bed. For small babies, put 1 tbsp (15 ml) in a sterilized feeding bottle. For older babies, use up to half a cup (125 ml).
Stings and Insect Bites
Wasp stings are alkaline: apply inside surface of a houseleek leaf (Sempervivum tectorum), onion slices, or dab on vinegar (if possible thyme vinegar). Bee stings and ant bites are acid: apply sodium bicarbonate dissolved in ice-cold water. Remember to remove the bee sting. Reduce painful swelling with a drop of neat lavender or eucalyptus oil. To soothe lingering irritation, apply a cold compress of tincture of calendula or calendula ointment. To soothe nettle stings, rub on crushed dock leaves (Rumex obtusifolius).
Stomach Ache
Sharp or prolonged pain in the stomach needs a professional medical diagnosis. For those who already know what is causing their ailment, herbs can be helpful as long as the condition is monitored. To soothe and heal the delicate mucous membranes in the stomach, drink chamomile (Matricaria recutita) tea for its anti-inflammatory effect or marshmallow (Althaea offidnalis) as desired. For digestive disorders, slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) (purchased as a powder) is both a soothing remedy as well as a wholesome food for those unable to face solid food, and it is safe for children over 12 months. Make a paste with 1/2 — 1 tbsp (8-15 ml) powdered bark and a little cold water. Stir in 1 cup (225 ml) of hot milk or water and sweeten with honey if desired. For stomach cramps caused by indigestion, drink an infusion of antiseptic catnip (Nepeta cataria). For stomach ulcers, chew liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) as desired or take a dose of 1/4 tsp (1 ml) powdered root daily (strong doses are laxative). A calendula petal infusion, drunk three times a day, especially combined with marshmallow root, soothes and aids the healing of stomach ulcers. For gastric and duodenal ulcers, lime blossom (Tilia cordata) tea has useful anti-inflammatory properties and the softening mucilage of comfrey (Symphytum officinale) makes it a soothing and healing treatment. Boil 1 tsp (5 ml) dried root in 1 cup (225 ml) water for 10 minutes. For stomach ulcers and colitis: Half to 1 tsp (3—5ml) powdered goldenseal root (Hydrastis canadensis) infused in 1 cup (225 ml) boiling water for 10 minutes is a powerful tonic for all parts of the digestive tract.
Sunburn
Aloe vera leaf juice is cooling and healing for sunburn and minor burns. Apply directly to the area of sunburn. A compress of sorrel (Rumex acetosa) also has a cooling effect. Sorrel tea is said to nullify the effects of sunstroke and exhaustion: take one cup (225ml) three times a day. A macerated oil of St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is excellent for minor burns once they have cooled.
Teething
Chamomile tea calms some fractious children as do homeopathic granules of chamomile (sold as chamomilla). Babies can be given a clean piece of marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) root to chew on. Make sure that the baby cannot choke on the root.
Throat, sore
Purple sage (Salvia offidnalis 'Purpurea') is an excellent treatment for sore throats. It is antiseptic and healing for inflammation of the mouth, throat, and tonsils. Drink half a cup (125 ml) infusion four times a day, and gargle with it as often as required. Do not drink it during pregnancy: it may cause abortion. The bacterial qualities of lemon, another popular remedy, are increased if you take it in an infusion with a natural antiseptic such as eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and honey. Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a powerful disinfectant and excellent gargle for sore throats, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. Gargle with a standard tea of fenugreek seed, agrimony (Agrimonia eupatorium) or self-heal (Prunella vulgaris), or a decoction of bistort root (Polygonum bistorta) for relief of sore throats, inflammation of the mouth or tongue and laryngitis, or a cayenne infusion for laryngitis. The anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of chamomile (Matricaria recutita) make it a useful gargle for sore throats and mouth infections such as gingivitis. Use a double-strength infusion of the flowers. The menthol in peppermint (Mentha piperita) makes it a pleasant antiseptic. Soothe a sore throat by wrapping around a hot compress of sage (Salvia officinalis) or thyme (Thymus vulgaris), kept warm and in place with a scarf. Chew licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) as desired.
Toothache
Cloves are a powerful local antiseptic and mild pain reliever. Put a drop of oil of cloves (available from chemists and essential-oil suppliers) on the end of a cottonwool bud and dab on or near the tooth; alternatively, place a clove in the mouth near the tooth for as long as it is effective.
Travel Sickness
Recent research confirms that the best treatment to settle the stomach and help prevent nausea is an infusion of root ginger. Take a bottle of tincture of ginger when traveling, and give 10 drops in half a cup (125ml) of water for adults or 2-3 drops mixed in a little warm water for children. Pick large leaves of fresh angelica (Angelica archangelica) and crush them on the journey; the scent allays nausea and refreshes stale air.
Varicose Veins
Much can be done to prevent varicose veins. Tackle constipation, improve your diet, adding vitamins B, C, and E, take more exercise, stop smoking, avoid hot baths and standing for hours. Take spices that stimulate the circulation, such as ginger and cayenne, and an infusion of herbs that contain rutin, such as buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), hawthorn berries (Crataegus monogyna) and horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum). Drink no more than three times a day, or use as a compressor lotion. If your veins are inflamed or ache, a compress of calendula tincture or witch hazel will relieve the pain.
Worms
As garlic kills intestinal parasites, make a garlic ointment and apply it around the anus nightly for two weeks. Pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita maxima) are among the most efficient remedies for killing intestinal parasites, including tapeworms, but a routine of fasting, cleansing the bowels and precise dosage must be followed, so it is wise to carry out the treatment under the supervision of a qualified medical herbalist. 7 Secret Weapons to Win the War of Arthritis Inflammation and Pain
creator
Joint inflammation is the #1 reason for handicap in America today, affecting around seven million individuals. It is currently a standout amongst the most predominant endless medical issues.
The assessed yearly expenses of joint inflammation to Americans are $15 billion in coordinate medicinal expenses and $49 billion in roundabout costs, for example, lost wages. About 40 million Americans have joint pain, with 24 million of them being under 65 years of age. Anticipated increment of joint pain by 2020 is 60 million in the U.S. alone. More about after tattoo care.
With over a hundred varieties of joint pain, the most widely recognized one is osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative joint malady which is identified with maturing. The crumbled ligament that secured the closures of the bone in the joint cause's loss of development as the bone rubs against bone. It makes the bones change shape, the muscles to debilitate and the reflexes to moderate.
Osteoarthritis most normally happens in the weight-bearing joints. Extreme injury to a joint can hasten joint inflammation, once in a while years after the underlying damage. Painkillers are successful for some time, however when the medications never again facilitate the torment a few doctors suggest surgery. Americans experience bring down back surgery, and knee and hip substitution surgery generally in light of osteoarthritis.
Another basic joint inflammation known as rheumatoid joint pain is an immune system infection. In immune system illness, the body's safe framework really assaults its own tissue. The joints and ligament are typically encompassed by defensive tissue called synovium which creates a liquid that supports and greases up the bones and ligament.
A rheumatoid ligament patient's invulnerable framework produces white platelets that assault the synovium. This is the thing that causes the aggravation, and excruciating swollen joints. At the point when the kindled synovium assaults the joint, bone, and ligament it makes the muscles around the joint turn out to be excessively frail, making it impossible to help it appropriately. Hence ceaseless aggravation is the offender that may in the long run make harm the ligament and bone.
Rheumatoid joint pain is a standout amongst the most genuine and crippling sorts of joint inflammation. Serious joint agony, exhaustion fever, and aggravation are the main manifestations the vast majority take note. In more genuine cases, the immune system reaction includes different ranges of the body, for example, the heart, lungs, kidney or liver.
Gout is described by monosodium uric gems in the joints or tissue. It by and large happens in patients 30 to 50 years of age after numerous times of eating an over rich eating routine of purine nourishments. At the point when the kidneys can not take out the over generation of uric corrosive from the body, levels develop making the needle like precious stones frame on the joints.
This difficult illness generally assaults little joints. The recurrence of resulting intense assaults of gout for the most part increments after some time. An eating routine of greasy protein rich sustenances, extreme liquor utilization, and stoutness are contributing elements of gout assaults.
It is essential that you play a dynamic part in the aversion and treatment of joint harm. There are many strides you can go out on a limb for creating joint inflammation, and in addition normal solutions for help diminish aggravation, and different side effects.
The regular treatment incorporates the utilization of painkillers, and mitigating drugs. While these medications are regularly useful in easing the agony, they may quicken the degeneration of articular surfaces in this way decimating the body's capacity to repair ligament. A few thousand patients are admitted to doctor's facilities consistently for inconveniences related with mitigating meds.
Since you comprehend that controlling irritation is the greatest stride in fighting joint pain here are my mystery joint inflammation weapons:
1. Nourishments to maintain a strategic distance from eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, wheat, corn, hamburger, pork, eggs, dairy, seared sustenances, sugar items, refined starches and sustenances high in gluten which has a tendency to strengthen irritation.
2. Sustenances to eat-nourishments high in sulfur, for example, asparagus, cabbage, garlic, and onions which may help repair ligament and bone. Likewise incorporate fish, flax (omega-3 unsaturated fats), and borage oil (omega-6 unsaturated fats) which can help diminish irritation.
3. Multivitamin-including cancer prevention agents, for example, vitamin E, C, A, selenium, and zinc since we never again get ideal sums from our day by day eating regimen to battle free radical assaults on the joints.
4. Exercise-gainful in decreasing firmness, and keep up an ideal weight to help facilitate the weight on those weight bearing joints.
5. Celery seed-this great characteristic flavor contains about two dozen calming mixes known for diminishing irritation.
6. Glucosamine supplement-the joints quit creating this fundamental substance that eases solidness.
7. Chondroitin supplement-the body quits creating chrondocytes which help keep up solid joints.
Fuse these 7 non-biochemical (regular) weapons into the war zone, and the war against joint inflammation will be a great deal more feasible normally.

Dangers in the Ghouls of the Clans series
The lake territory became a lot safer for the Clans in the years before the Ghouls of the Clans series began.  Warriors are living to greater ages than ever before, to the point that the medicine cats are focusing a lot on elderly cat care.  The deaths of the local Twolegs have eliminated several risks such as manhandling by Twolegs or being hit by monsters.
However, it is not a completely safe world.  The Dark Forest is stirring.  Even without paranormal forces taken into account, there are many natural threats that may take a cat’s life.  Accidents may happen at any time.  Here is an index of dangerous illnesses, animals, and accidents that Clan cats are keeping an eye out for.
Note that some of the dangerous animals are listed just because the Clans see them as competition for food, and that some of these creatures may end up as prey for a Clan cat in the right circumstances even if they can cause the cats severe harm.
Illnesses
Blood Dirt Fever - Described more in depth in its own section.  The blood dirt fever is feline distemper; it causes affected cats to fit, experience major stomach pain, to spike up their body temperature into a fever, and expel blood-laced ‘dirt’ in the dirtplace.  It is very contagious.  This disease battered all of the Clans in the backstory, with SkyClan and ShadowClan hit the worst.
The survival rate is low, but not impossible.  Patients are given a combination of willow leaves, borage, feverfew, chervil root, juniper berries, mallow leaves, parsley, watermint, and sorrel to ride the disease out.  The Clans have worked very hard to make sure it does not come back.
Cancer - The Clans do not know the formal name for this illness.  They notice that affected cats frequently have lumps where they should not, may have sores that do not heal, lose weight quickly, have poor appetites, are very tired, have difficulty making dirt, and are often in pain.  It has become more common with warrior cat life expectancies rising.  There are multiple types of cancer.  And, sadly, many of them are one-way tickets to StarClan.
Small external tumors and the like may be removed by medicine cats biting them off while the patient is sedated with poppy seeds.  The resulting wounds will be treated with herbs to prevent infection.  Terminal cats will eventually either focus on in-camp duties or retire once their illness hits a certain point.  Their pain is relieved with poppy seeds. The survival time with each cancer varies.
Coughs: Whitecough, Greencough, Yellowcough, Redcough, Blackcough - Any of these diseases can take out frail cats, and once a cat’s cough progresses to greencough or blackcough, they are in serious trouble.  Blackcough in particular is fatal to any cat that contracts it.  Whitecough, greencough, and redcough may be soothed by catmint and/or chickweed, while yellowcough requires lungwort.
Feline Chronic Renal Failure - The Clans simply know this illness as a wasting disease.  It has become more common with the life expectancy of the warrior cats rising.  The cat’s kidneys have been reduced to one-fourth or less of their normal function.  This leaves the cat unable to filter toxins out of their blood.
This condition shares several symptoms with diabetes; affected cats feel more thirsty, will pay more visits to the dirtplace, and will lose weight.  They also feel nauseous.  They grow more reluctant to eat anything as the disease progresses.  Their pelts grow less glossy.  Cats may lapse into a coma at the end-stage
Chronic renal failure is a condition that nearly always kills the cat affected if something else does not take them first.  They may live for years after depending on several factors.  Medicine cats provide CRF patients with unlimited access to water.
They will be encouraged to avoid eating fish, as the medicine cats noticed that cats ill with CRF do worse on an aquatic diet.  That is because fish has higher phosphorus than say squirrel or duck.  CRF cats have trouble processing high amounts of phosphorus.
This can be very difficult for a RiverClan cat to adjust to; such a cat will detest having to eat different food from the rest of their Clanmates and avoiding what has been a staple food for them all of their life.  A RiverClan CRF cat might transfer to a land-based Clan or perhaps even commit the unthinkable.   Affected cats will eventually grow weak enough where they will either perform in-camp duties most of the time or will willingly retire to the elders’ den if they have not retired beforehand.
Feline Diabetes - The Clan cats do not know this disease by name, but it has become more common with warriors living longer.  The cat’s pancreas no longer produces enough insulin, or their cells have become resistant to insulin.  Affected cats will drink more water than normal; they will pay more visits to the dirtplace as a result.  Their appetite can either increase or decrease.  They lose a lot of weight either way.
Medicine cats have noticed that these cats should no longer receive honey or other sweet things as treats unless they have gone too long without food or need it for medical treatment of a different condition, but their ability to treat diabetes is limited.  All they can really do is give diabetic cats several small meals a day, make them comfortable, and maybe encourage them to never go out alone in case of a ‘crash’.
Heartworms/Mosquito Cough - This disease is transmitted by mosquitos in ShadowClan territory.  Larval parasites nestle in the infected cat’s heart when a mosquito bites them for blood.   Most are killed while inside of the cat’s lungs, but those that make it to the heart and survive to adulthood can leave a cat in big trouble.  It is thankfully a rare occurrence.
Should the mosquito cough make it to that stage, there is nothing a medicine cat can do but make the patient comfortable on their journey to StarClan.  Survival would be iffy even if treated by a Cutter - the only effective drugs to treat heartworm contain arsenic.  The affected cat would have to remain on bed rest during treatment until all of the worms are gone.  Cats are advised to stay away from where mosquitoes most commonly swarm as a result.
Poisonings - Poisonings can no longer occur through Twolegs tainting prey, but there are always deathberries around the corner.  Adders hide in crevices waiting to strike prospective prey.   Cats check their fresh-kill and water thoroughly for signs of it being tainted.  They discard any tainted food.  Even so, several cats still die from being poisoned.
Poisonings from food or drink are treated by making the cat vomit with yarrow, and soothing their stomach with juniper berries or watermint.  Cats that have survived adder bites are administered burdock, dandelion, daisy, juniper berries, and basil to purge them of the venom.
Hostile Animals
Adders - Adders are venomous snakes that are nearly three foot long at maximum length.  They are mainly found around ThunderClan and WindClan territory during newleaf, greenleaf, and early leaffall.  Their bites are dangerous to cats.  Warriors have an iffy chance of survival if injected with venom.
Ways of warding against them vary by Clan, as adders have different preferred areas on each Clan’s territory.  The one thing that remains constant is that warriors check out for them.  WindClan warriors report to their Clan if they have found a shed adder’s skin on patrol.  Warriors around that patch of territory will keep alert.  ThunderClan cats frequently check the stone quarry that is part of their camp.  They leave mice baited with deathberries to kill scaly intruders before they can harm a Clanmate.
Badgers - Badgers are stocky black and white mammals with a short tail and short limbs.  They may be found on any of the Clan’s territories, with RiverClan having the least encounters.  They can kill with just one bite or a strike with their paw.  They have thankfully grown less common around the lake with SkyClan joining the others.
Part of why badgers attack cats is that they see felines as competition; the two species share some of the same diet.  They will even steal and kill kits from a Clan’s nursery if given a chance.  A warrior can survive a badger attack as long as they act sensibly.  They should never try attacking a badger alone.  Clans will put their members on lockdown if a badger is in the area.  They will then send patrols to chase it out.
Bees - Bees are black and yellow striped stinging insects that live in large groups called colonies.  They are not the worst of a cat’s enemies, but they come into conflict when cats (frequently the medicine cat of a Clan) come to extract honey from their hives.  As honey is needed to treat several ailments, cats cannot just avoid beehives.  Cats out honey harvesting do so at night when the bees are sleeping.  They are quiet while doing so as to not wake them.
Should the bees awaken and express their displeasure, cats run in the opposite direction of the hive.  They attempt to find shelter in a bush or shrub if at all possible.  Cats should not kill any of the bees if possible; the dead bee wil secret a scent that will attract more bees and a few predators, including badgers.  Cats should return to camp after verifying that the bees have abandoned chase.
Dark Forest Cats (Regular) - Covered in their own section.  Dark Forest cats are the spirits of Clan cats that have been refused access to StarClan because they committed heinous actions while alive.  They have grown more active in recent moons.  They may appear in any territory.  The normal course of action is to inflict a fatal wound on them so their spirits fade away.
Dark Forest Shadow Demons - Covered in their own section.  Dark Forest shadow demons are what result when three Dark Forest cats fuse their spirits together through a vile ritual.  They are large black cats with tendrils extending out of their bodies, and glowing eyes that are frequently amber in color.  They may show up in most territories, with RiverClan being the main exception.  They are a major threat to all other creatures in the area, including Twolegs; they mustn’t be taken lightly.
Taking on one of these spirits is risky because of their large size.  Warriors attempt to run away if possible.  An even better move is to lure the shadow demon to a body of water.  Even those with RiverClan component spirits drown easily.  Warriors are to avoid being wounded by this creature’s claws at all costs; wounds from a shadow demon are easily infected.  Such a warrior will be treated for infection with dock and be remanded to in-camp duties for a week to ensure no harm was done.
Dogs - Domestic dogs are used by humans/Twolegs for various purposes.  They come in a variety of sizes, colors, and body builds.  They are predators and scavengers.  They are found in many areas, especially with many of their owners killed by the Dark Forest.
Conflicts with dogs have decreased over the years thanks to various factors.  The Twolegs around the lake are dead for the most part, no other Twolegs with dogs have visited the lake since, and the Clan cats even made peace with herding dogs from the Horseplace that tend to the local sheep.  But, stray dogs from other areas do pose a threat to the Clans.
If a dog that has terrorized cats has made their nest on Clan territory, the Clan will send a large patrol to pinpoint their location.  The dog will then be chased out.  As none of the Clans want vicious dogs around their homes, the patrols will try to chase the intruder clear of all lake territory.  The dogs most likely to pose a threat are those with high prey-drive, like huskies, large hounds, terriers, and gundogs/sporting breeds.
Eagles - The lake Clans mainly encounter the golden eagle, which is a very large dark brown raptor with broad wings.  They are an odd case where the cats are a threat to them as much as they are a threat to the cats.  Cats may hunt eagles down for food while in large hunting patrols.  They are mainly found on WindClan territory.
Local eagles have grown wise to this, and try to avoid hunting down Clan cats.  They only go after cats that are alone.  If one does so, a patrol will be sent out to hunt the eagle down.  The Clan will feed very well that night.
Foxes - Foxes are medium-sized ginger and white canines with pointed muzzles and large ears.  They are omnivores.  They are very territorial.  They can be found on any Clan’s territory, and are very adaptable.
A single strong cat can chase one off, but it is preferable for a patrol to do so as a group.  Clan cats check for fox scent and dung on any patrol.  Warriors are wary of this creature, as they can kill a cat if the cat is not careful.
Hawks -  Hawks are diurnal birds of prey with broad rounded wings and a long tail.  They are smaller than eagles.  They are most commonly found around WindClan territory, though there are occasional sightings around ThunderClan territory as well.
Like with eagles, hawks are dangerous to cats, but cats are also dangerous to them.  The local hawks only go for Clan cats as a last resort.  Clan cats will hunt down intruding hawks if they find hawk feathers and the like around.  They pursue the raptor in a large patrol.  The patrol’s Clan will eat well that evening.
Hornets - Hornets are brown and yellow-striped stinging insects that are carnivores.  They like fashioning paper nests in dark places like hollow tree trunks.  They can become problematic during leaffall when they scavenge for food from leftover fresh-kill.
Clan cats try to leave hornets alone for the most part.  If a nest of hornets is becoming a problem, cats will plant mint and other strong-scented herbs around their nest.  The hornets will hate the strong smelling herbs, and will take their business elsewhere.  If hornets pursue a cat, the procedures are the same as escaping from a bee.
Opossum - Opossums are small grayish marsupials with a long flat nose and rat-like tails.  They are omnivores, eating anything from fruits and insects to small animals.  They only venture out at night most of the year; leafbare is an exception.  They are found on all of the territories, with RiverClan having the most frequent visitors.
Clan cats do not tolerate opossums well as they are competition for fresh-kill and devour needed herbs.  They have grown wise to the fact that opossums play dead to escape harm.  They will take advantage of that to kill the creature while it’s helpless.  Unfortunate given the opossum’s docile nature, but the Clans are defensive of their resources.  They are not going to turn down a chance for some fresh-kill.
Owls - Owls are birds of prey that generally hunt at night.  Clan cats mostly encounter the barn owl, the tawny owl, the long-eared owl, and the short-eared owl.  They are all primarily brown.  They are frequently found in ThunderClan, SkyClan, and ShadowClan territory.  WindClan receives a few visits from short-eared owls and barn owls, but they do not encounter the others on their lands.
These raptors are a double-edged sword to the cats; their pellets provide clues on where the best prey may be found, but they can easily snatch up kits.  Cats never go out alone at night to avoid becoming prey of an owl.  The Clans will send patrols to scout out owl nests so the Clan avoids those areas.  If a very dangerous owl must be dealt with, a large patrol will first chase them away from the territory.  They will then destroy the owl’s nest if possible so they do not come back.  This is considered an option of last resort.
Raccoons - Raccoons are gray medium-sized mammals with pointed muzzles and cat-like ears.  They are mainly nocturnal.  They do not usually congregate in large groups; smaller groups often socialize together around a common feeding ground.  They are mainly found around ThunderClan, ShadowClan, and SkyClan territory with a few sightings in RiverClan.
These creatures were part of why SkyClan had to move to the lake; several individuals the Twolegs kept as pets had escaped into the wild and attacked SkyClan’s camp.  Their numbers have sadly become more numerous since most Twolegs have died around the lake territory and surrounding areas.  They have managed to settle around the lake.
The Clan cats do not like raccoons because of their involvement in SkyClan’s banishment from the gorge.  A patrol that discovers tufts of raccoon fur or scat will report so to the Clan leader right away.  The Clan’s camp will go into lockdown while a patrol organizes an attack on the raccoon’s den.
Skunks - Skunks are small striped stout mammals that are usually black and white.  They can secrete a foul-smelling odor from scent glands around their anus.  They are most active around dawn and dusk.  They are mainly insectivores, but supplement their diets with small animals and plants.  They are found in all territories but RiverClan.
These creatures are actually quite docile, but the Clans see them as intruders because they eat some of the cats’ prey.  They also do not want to be sprayed.  The usual method of driving out a skunk if it is needed is locating the skunk’s den, blocking it off, and then marking the area.
If a cat gets sprayed by a skunk, their eyes are soothed with celandine.  They will have to bathe in a body of water and then smother their pelt with lavender. Chances are that their Clanmates will not want to be near them until the scent has faded, and that they will be excluded from duties until then as well as their scent will frighten away prey.
Stoats - Stoats are small carnivorous mammals of the weasel family that have chestnut fur, white underparts, and a black-tipped tail.  They are active during both the day and night, though they will switch to becoming nocturnal during leaf-bare.  They eat rabbits, rodents, hares, and birds.  They are found in ShadowClan, WindClan, and RiverClan territory.
Clan cats do not tolerate stoats in their territory as they share the same diet, which makes stoats competitors.  Warriors will locate all possible dens.  They will then pursue the stoat to chase it out.  It has a high chance of ending up on the Clan’s fresh-kill pile if it doesn’t put up a large fight.
Wasps - Wasps are yellow and black striped stinging insects that are related to hornets.  They are most active in the early morning.  They eat insects, fruit, wood pulp, and nectar.  They are found in all of the territories.
Clan cats try to leave wasps alone for the most part.  If a nest of wasps is becoming a problem, cats will plant mint and other strong-scented herbs around their nest.  The wasps will hate the strong smelling herbs, and will take their business elsewhere.  If wasps pursue a cat, the procedures are the same as escaping from a bee.
Weasels - Weasels are small thin brown mammals with a white underside and short legs.  They are active at all hours of the day.  They eat small rodents, rabbits, birds, bird eggs, small fish, and other small prey.  They are found in all territories, with RiverClan having the least to worry about.
These small fierce predators are competition for Clan cats as they eat much of the same diet as they do.  They are also of a small enough size where a Clan cat could kill them for prey, though that is a rare occurrence.  Clan cats will attempt to chase the weasel out.  This will prove difficult because of the weasel’s nimbleness; the cat might end up badly injured by a bite to their neck.  If they do kill the weasel, the creature will end up on the fresh-kill pile.
Accidents and Natural Disasters
Blizzards - Blizzards are severe snowstorms with low visibility and high winds.  They can be major hazards for cats in leafbare.  They drive prey to their nests if they are not already hiding, increase the chances of a cat freezing to death, erase scents, cause tree branches to break off, and can prevent cats from heading home to their Clan.
If cats detect that a blizzard is on the way, only needed cats will be allowed out of the camp.  Elders, queens, kits, younger apprentices, medicine cats, and Clan leaders will stay where it is warm unless an emergency forces them out.  Border patrols will be limited until the weather eases up.  If cats are caught in a blizzard, they are to make a temporary den where they have been stranded until the weather passes through.  Clans will search for missing Clanmates after the blizzard has passed.
Drowning - Drowning is to die while submerged underwater.  This can happen to any cat near the lakeshore.  RiverClan in particular is always cautious about this happening to one of their cats.
Cats act cautiously while around any significant body of water.  Mentors will not lay their eyes off their apprentices for a second.  RiverClan teaches their kits how to swim from a tender age so drownings are minimized.  Should a cat fall into the water, the members of their patrol will attempt to retrieve them.  Cats are advised to keep their noses above water in such conditions so they have a better chance at survival.
Falls - To fall is to move downward freely without control of one’s locomotion at a rapid pace.  Cats have a risk of falling from any high object, including trees and tall rocks.  Broken bones, internal organ damage, and blunt force trauma can occur if a cat is not careful.
Young apprentices are not allowed anywhere that looks too steep to minimize accidents.  Fully grown cats focus on their task at paw at all times if they are on an area where falling could occur.  The treatment for injuries from falls vary with each individual wound.
Fires - Fires happen when substances chemically combine with oxygen, which creates combustion with bright lights, smoke, and heat.  Fires happen either because an area has grown too dry, or because an individual is messing with flammable objects.  The second scenario is unlikely with Twolegs no longer around the lake.
Fires are dangerous.  They can destroy camps, kill cats unable to escape the flames, leave burns on those that did not evacuate in time, and leave smoke that can suffocate every creature in the area.  Smoke inhalation can lead to cats either developing asthma or losing their sense of smell.  A warrior of WindClan named Squirrelfoot is famous because he lost his sense of smell in the fire that destroyed his former Twolegnest.
Older kits, apprentices, and other cats are frequently quizzed on what to do if a fire hits.  Should a fire develop on Clan territory, the Clan will evacuate their camp.  They will run low to the ground in the opposite direction of the flames.  The Clan will attempt to lead out their most vulnerable cats first.  The cats will either set up a temporary camp elsewhere or ask for asylum from a rival Clan.
Treatment for trauma from a fire will vary with the condition.  A cat with burns will have their wounds cleaned and treated with infection-preventing herbs.  They will also be given poppy seeds to deal with the pain.  A cat with smoke inhalation will be given honey, tansy, juniper, and coltsfoot to ease their breathing.
Flooding - Flooding is when an area is covered with or submerged in water.  This is mainly RiverClan’s problem, but as shown by the Great Flood in Bramblestar’s Storm, it can happen to any of the five Clans if it has rained too much in one period of time.  Some of the risks of flooding include drowning, destruction of a Clan’s camp and territory, and loss of prey.
A Clan will evacuate their camp for higher ground if they see signs of flooding nearby.  They cannot do much about loss of territory or their camp except for rebuilding the camp when they deem if safe to return.  Cats’ meals will probably be rationed for a while until prey becomes more plentiful again.  Cats will assist any struggling Clanmates in the watery conditions.
Heat Waves - A heat period is a prolonged period of abnormally hot weather.  Heat waves are not as dangerous to cats as other animals, for cats were originally domesticated in the desert.  They can withstand warmer temperatures and receive most of their water from their food.  However, the heat can end up a killer for the most vulnerable cats in the Clan: the kits, the frail, and the elders.
Cats will confine most of their activities to dawn, morning, dusk, and night.  They will nap during midday.  They stay in the shade if at all possible.  Warriors ensure that the most needy have water.   Any cat exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion will be moved to the shade with plenty of water in moss to drink.  Cats that end up with heat exhaustion are moved to a shady airy nest in the medicine den and soaked with water-filled moss to lower their temperature.
Thunderstorms - Thunderstorms are storms with lightning, thunder, heavy rain, and occasionally hail.  They increase the chances of a wildfire spreading or of a tornado forming, pelt down large balls of hail, produce dangerous winds, and can lead to flooding.  There is also the chance of being struck by lightning.
Cats will continue their normal duties if the storm is not severe, but will confine themselves to camp if the thunderstorm proves too violent.  Patrols out in severe thunderstorms or hail conditions will shelter in place until the weather has passed.  Cats stay as far away from trees as they can manage while the storm brews.  Clans will evacuate their members to higher ground if flooding occurs.  There is little the Clans can do about dangerous wind, however.
