Fans seeing Remakes as a linear art where all changes come from going down a checklist where every plot point is a simple "yes" or "no" box is going to be the death of me. When you frame a narrative that's intentionally made to remix and fuck with the original narrative concepts and themes to say something DIFFERENT or expand on the themes as "Kept this element from the OG" vs "Removed" you typically miss out on what the story is even trying to say. You see a lot of "what they kept/cut" vs "WHY they kept/cut it". The writers/producers could literally look the audience in the face and say "This is the theme, it's not the same theme as the original but this is why we rewrote the narrative." and people would intentionally ignore what the current narrative is trying to say to replace it with the narrative of the original. Even if the two themes contradict or actively critique each other/are in conversation.

In the case of IWTV, we got an amazing story about how race connects to power imbalance and the cycle of abuse that WASN'T present in the original. To take that away from the narrative is to misunderstand WHY it exists.

To remove the Fear of the Future and Death from FF7 Remake/Rebirth is to lose a fundamental part of the narrative.

Consume media in the moment, and understand themes from both past AND present. Getting told that a story that is explicitly about a major concept is secretly about [something that isn't even present in the current adaptation] is driving me up the wall.

The constant need to disrespect emergent themes and narratives as falsehoods and abnormal structures that don't deserve analysis or critical thought floor me. The writers of adaptations and remakes are not absentminded when writing, they are not despots and lazy artists. They write just as much as the original writers, if not more. It is so bizarre seeing a narrative that turns the source material into an inside-out art piece get watered down into a list of either "fanservice" or "accidents". Any change is indulgent and useless, anything you dislike is a mistake or pandering, and so on and so forth. Because there's just no way the writers have anything to say of value, that would simply be ridiculous! /s

How often do we misread the emotions of people just by the way they behave? I would say a lot, that’s why we have a whole branch of psychological study on body language and behaviors. Some people are very good at masking their emotions, some are bad at it. But that’s where the problem comes from, facing a person that is so good at hiding their emotions means to be tricked to believe they are behaving one way while they aren’t. And most of the time, the masked emotions tend to be the negative ones, sadness, anger, frustration, etc. One of the simplest method to cause deception on emotion is to make yourself look dramatic, since people will look at you and think you are fussing, exaggerating, that will nail in their perception of how your emotion seem to be. And this method was used very common in theatre plays, especially Shakespeare’s works (Hamlet, King Lear, etc) to represent the way a character hides their emotions and plans.

In this part, I’m going to talk about that kind of writing in Crisis Core, and the deeper layer of what that writing aimed to, the Five Stages of Grief.

5. Acceptance

It’s been a long while till I touch this series, but I think this is an important and very impressive writing technique used in Crisis Core so I will talk about it. Please take a look at the exhibits above, I will work them out in the next parts.

Their Voices brought some of my favorite Characters to life by lending them a voice. 🩷 So now I'll be theirs. I'm really hoping that Square Enix will consider a DLC for the Final Fantasy VII Remake Games and include both Voice casts.

That way all fans could experience the wonderful talent of both the new Voice Cast & The Original Cast. It would be a dream come true for me and I'm sure a lot of other fans too. Also, I'm sure it'd be a dream come true for all of the Original Cast to come back and reprise their roles as these characters as well.

For anyone who was a fan of Crisis Core, Advent Children, or Dirge Of Cerberus and would love to see a DLC happen in the near-future, please take a look at our petition to try and make this happen!

I have many thoughts about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and things I would love to see in the game. But the MAIN thing I want is to see my boy Roche again. Please bring him back, let him be a racer in the chocobo minigame or something. Give me a whole sidequest chain where each time you return to Gold Saucer he has a new racing challenge for you. Let the man defect from SOLDIER just to live out his dream of finding a "worthy opponent." Let him kickflip a chocobo. These are my only demands Square I'm begging you.

Huh.

I always thought Cloud is anti-social because of all the mountain of trauma that piled up on him but I am reading Traces of Two Pasts and apparently... that's just his personality?

He was like that since he was a kid.

It breaks my heart to think that Zack was just so aggressively friendly and hyperactively cheerful that he broke through to him. Cloud didn't make any friends and then Zack comes along "You're from a small village? I'm from a small village. Best friends forever!"

And there's no stopping Zack. He invites Cloud out for dinner. While. Cloud. Is. Barfing. He made him elbow bump! He even figured out why Cloud is hiding under his helmet and told him Tifa is alright. He made him open up about wanting to be a SOLDIER within 5 minutes they met, something Cloud didn't even tell his mom.

I'm just internally screaming how close poor Cloud was to being pulled out of his shell. Zack would have done it. I bet Zack would have even convinced him to tell Tifa he was there. Instead it turned into one of the most traumatic experiences for Cloud (and us) and made him pull inward even more.

Where was I going with this? I had a point.

Right. I guess I just wanted to say I was surprised he had pretty much the same quiet friendless personality when he was a child before all of *motions to endless Compilation of Final Fantasy VII trauma* happened. And that he was so close to being happy.
