First Reading BNHA 14-24
I’m very confused by the pacing of this manga so far. Was it meant to be an anime right away, so the manga was expected to just be bare bones and filler and more characterization would be added in episodes?
After my complaints about how inconsistent Izuku’s characterization was, I guess that’s smoothed out now--by glossing over the extremes. Looks like this is going to be another one where a main character gets a difficult backstory with discrimination and horrible treatment only long enough to get sympathy points, and then completely forgets about it and acts mostly well-adjusted protagonist from then on. Izuku is vaguely curious that All Might wants him to announce himself at the Sports Festival at first--no desperation to get AM’s approval, none of the reckless and thoughtless need to be the best and prove he’s earned his place (fighting against internalized anti-quirkless bias), no tearful gratitude for what he’s overcome to get this far when he used to watch the festival on TV: no, it sounded like Izuku would have been comfortable and taking for granting participating in the middle of the pack b/c he’s a hero and that’s enough for him.
I’m a little disappointed that it seems like UA is just a backdrop, and actually learning isn’t going to be part of the story, which doesn’t imply good things about character development either. No build up about consider all the applications your quirk could have in unusual situations; it’s your first day, show Aizawa your creativity in using quirks you were never allowed to before. No build up to how to fight with quirks or strategize inside buildings or historical examples of teamwork to inspire you; first day of class, pair up and fight. You might have to think clearly in disasters despite the stress, we’re actually going to train for thi--no, real homicidal villains showed up, and obviously you don’t need any lessons or growth about how to handle attacks, everyone handles it pretty well. Two professional heroes are beaten bloody in front of students trying to protect them, no worries, the kids are almost on pro levels already. Mineta is the only one who actually reacts with fear and panic, and even he is fine afterward with no one reacting at all to the first time their lives were directly threatened or if they’re willing to be heroes now they know it’s about injury and overwhelming forces and ambushes, not celebrity and clean showy fights when expecting it on patrols.
Bakugou’s smart and has been surprisingly calm and in control of himself.
Shigaraki was a lot less childish than I was expecting from other things I’ve seen. He was observant, read Eraserhead and the battles well, could even keep up to notice what All Might did when he was moving too fast to see, wasn’t afraid to take a punch and get in close with EH, and he grasped his group’s limits well and expected to retreat soon after knowing Iida was bringing backup. He didn’t rave about his personal grudge or monologue about his own greatness or quirk, and admitted with a smile when All Might called him out on not really believing the party line he gave about wanting to send a greater message about the lack of difference in villains and heroes. He did react badly to the Nomu’s defeat, but it was brief, and he adapted well in his next attack to use Kurogiri’s mist. For someone I’d heard a lot about whining and throwing tantrums, he wasn’t nearly as self-centered as I expected about pain. After EH punched him away he just picked himself up off the ground, he stayed still to assess everything after Snipe shot his hand, and far from coddling him, I thought his discussion with Sensei while he was lying on the floor with bullets in every limb was chilling in the lack of concern for his pain showed by everyone in the room including him. Bleeding there, Shigaraki was still thinking about how the plan went and giving a report. He might not be an idealist devoted to a cause, but he was focused when it came to his own goal and unafraid to risk himself in it.
I really don’t get why Izuku was able to not hurt himself for that one punch against Nomu? What was the audience supposed to take away from that? The first time he tried to punch a living thing, he didn’t injure himself, so he subconsciously was able to control it. Are we supposed to applaud Izuku’s inherent compassion that held him back from wanting to hurt the villain trying to kill Tsu even as he attacked to stop it? Are we supposed to think it sad he can automatically control it if it’s to protect his target but can’t to protect himself? He broke his legs jumping later so it wasn’t about the violence. Was the key he stopped thinking about his weak body, didn’t weigh the damage and decide it was worth it? Thoughtlessness is being rewarded now? I guess that matches AM’s brilliant strategy that he can’t hit hard enough against Nomu so he’ll just hit harder than he possibly can.
What is this pacing? No room to think about the USJ attack or process any feelings from that or life-and-death situations, now showing off for the Sports Festival is so important! And again, no teaching or new stuff, they’re already expected to be hero material and this is just a showcase. But I guess Izuku isn’t worried about how far behind he is compared to the others, he’s ignoring reality and aiming for the top, without planning how to not use or safely use the quirk that breaks his bones to get there. Seriously, All Might, it’s his first month of school, the public isn’t anxiously awaiting the proof that a hero as mighty as AM is rising that Izuku has to send a message right now. No one outside the school even knows AM is planning to retire soon, and it’s not like there’s a shortage of powerhouses around. Why are the bragging rights of being able to be top of the class from your first month so much more important than learning to use OfA properly and rising up in the next year’s Festival? Unless this is a message about how the unreasonable celebrity demands to be perfect and capture the public’s fickle interest right away are taking time away from Izuku learning to be an effective hero, and the system shouldn’t be catering to the popularity contest so much?

Tarot Reading for @hellboundwitch
I used the Celtic Cross spread for this, mainly because it’s one I don’t get to use much so I wanted to practice it. I want to make a quick disclaimer that I am still a beginner so take this reading with a pinch of salt because I’m still learning.
Tumblr media
Okay, now here’s the post:
Tumblr media
The first thing I noticed about this is that there’s a rather unusually large amount of 9s. There are only four in the entire deck and there are three in this spread.
Going by numerology, nine is a pretty good number: it represents universal compassion and tolerance for the differences among people. In a reading, it shows you have established your life priorities. It’s the last single digit number and so represents the end of a cycle and the feeling of satisfaction that comes from that.
The second thing is that there are very few Major Arcana cards. The cards in the Major Arcana represent forces beyond yourself and the limits of earthly existence—typically, things that are out of your control. But, here, there’s only two in this spread so I would take that to mean that you generally have control over your life and you have more choice about how things turn out.
With all that in mind, lets get into the spread.
The first card is a significator card which is meant to bring you into the reading. This card is the 5 of Cups which… admittedly isn’t such a great card… It’s upright which suggests disappointment and difficulty. Maybe your life hasn’t gone so well for you in the past, maybe you’ve had someone close to you betray you or been unable to move on from a previous hurt.
Card number 1 represents you and your immediate concerns.
This is the Nine of Pentacles/Coins (reversed). Pentacles, as a suit, corresponds to money and resources. As it is reversed, this suggests that your current biggest concern is financial. Perhaps you’re having to rely on someone else for financial security or maybe you’ve recently taken a big risk and are worried it might fall through. This card urges you to take a deep breath and to not give up hope.
Card 2 crosses you and describes obstacles facing you.
This is the Page of Cups and, since its sideways, I’ll just read it as upright. The Page often suggests naïveté or vulnerability, especially in terms of emotions. This card suggest the obstacles that face you are more matters of the heart. Perhaps you have taken an emotional risk and are worried it won’t pay off. This card asks you embrace and nurture your feelings to release your inner child.
Card 3 sits at the top and describes what is known to you objectively.
Card 3 is the Nine of Wands (a personal favourite of mine because I think it’s real pretty. Anyways). This card says that you are nearing your goal. You need to stand strong and remain determined because you know the end is in sight, despite whatever setbacks you’ve faced along the way.
Card 4 is beneath you and describes the foundation of the concern or past influences affecting it. It can also show what is unknown about the situation.
This is the Queen of Pentacles/Coins (reversed). This card may signify someone who may try to block your efforts. This card often relates to a relative or another key feminine figure in your life, but not always. If it doesn’t describe a person, perhaps it relates to a situation where caution is required. Perhaps you have been hurt by another in the past or have had plans fall through.
Card 5 is behind you and describes past influences now fading away.
This is the Nine of Swords, which represents self doubt and inner torment. Perhaps you have been plagued by anxiety or depression in the past but both this card and its position in the spread indicate that this period will soon be over.
Card 6 is before you and describes new circumstances coming into being in the near future.
Card 6 is the Hanged Man. This card represents relaxation and readjustment. You may need to change your perspective going forwards but there is no hurry. A new direction for your life is in the making but, before then, you will have a time of relaxation.
Card 7 is your self and describes your current state of mind.
This card is the Three of Pentacles/Coins. This card is about turning your skills to profit or cooperating in a business venture. However, it cautions against hasty action and suggests making sure to thoroughly research whatever you’re planning before you do it. This could suggest you feel you don’t have all the facts yet to make an informed decision. This card urges you to look into it and find the facts you’re lacking.
Card 8 is your house and describes the circumstances surrounding the situation.
Card 8 is the King of Swords (reversed). This card suggests that your worries stem from the people around you being fickle and inconsistent in their support of you and your ideas, or perhaps you are the victim of the leader who abuses his authority.
Card 9 is what your hope or fear, or perhaps both.
This is the Knight of Cups (reversed). This card suggests that this has been an emotional time for you. Perhaps you have thrown yourself so deeply into a relationship or a project that you are only just beginning to come back to reality. This card suggests that you fear what you hope for may never arrive.
Card 10 is what will come and describes the likely future outcome.
Last, but certainly not least, card 10 is Judgement (reversed). Forces outside your control are at work. You might be considering making some changes in your life but are afraid of the consequences. Judgement warns against being held back from moving things along, lest your life become stagnant. This card suggests you should reach within for the motivation to make difficult choices. If you have been hesitating to make a choice, this card urges you to make it.
So there you go. That’s my reading for you!
Enjoy the rest of your day!

7, 8, 10 for Judgment, Secrecy, Vanity, Inconsistency and Beginning?
7. something they do that hurts themself
Judgement’s ego really does her no favors. She’s so arrogant that she never thinks she can be wrong– and that’s honestly her biggest weakness. She underestimates the people around her, and is so convinced that she’s untouchable that she lets things slip in ways that come back to bite her. On top of that, her ego and god complex are what pushes people away from her the most, and considering that what she wants more than anything is people who won’t leave her side, she’s really only making things worse for herself.
In Secrecy’s case, she’s too lazy to do much of anything for herself. She pretends to be a know-it-all who’s above the rest of the world, but in reality, she’s just a passive recluse who never does anything to help herself. She keeps up a distant facade, acting like she knows things that everyone else doesn’t, even when she’s really no better than any of the others. She convinces herself that she’s better than everyone so she doesn’t have the chance to be hurt.
Vanity downright refuses to improve herself in any way. She insists that she’s perfect in every possible aspect, and never allows herself to admit that she’s wrong long enough to get any better. Deep down, she knows she’s ugly on the inside, so she invests all of her time and effort into keeping herself externally perfect and untouchable… instead of doing anything to fix the real problem.
Inconsistency’s biggest weakness is her lack of self. She has no way to stand on her own, and relies on changing herself constantly as her only way of being unique. She’s an empty person deep down, and modeling herself after the people around her is the only way she knows how to make herself important. Instead of reaching out to people, she hurts herself for attention, copying people’s features in a twisted hope of stealing their happiness itself.
Beginning is something of a pushover. She gets nervous easily, and is bad at standing up for herself in moments of conflict. The same traits that make her adaptable mean that she bends to other people’s will much too easily. She has a hard time standing her ground, and tends to be taken advantage of because of it. She’s also so trusting that she often lets herself get hurt, choosing to assume the best of people instead of keeping herself safe. She wants to believe that people are good, and it often comes back to bite her.
8. something they do that hurts others
Honestly, nearly everything Judgement does hurts people. In particular, she’s a control freak who can’t stand not being in charge of every situation, and she pushes people around because she’s convinced they’ll leave her behind if she doesn’t. She has a hair-trigger temper, and acts violently whenever people don’t comply with her idea of how they should be. She’s so intolerant of others having free will that she’d sooner kill her followers than let them think for themselves, and she’s definitely not above hurting those who don’t obey.
Secrecy just plain doesn’t bother with anyone other than herself. She lacks all forms of empathy, and just plain doesn’t care what happens with anything that doesn’t directly affect her. She likes to hold her knowledge over other people’s heads, and actively gains satisfaction from feeling like she has an active advantage over the people around her, no matter how small.
Vanity has a dark side that she actively avoids showing the world. She can be extremely cruel when she puts her mind to it, and when her emotions slip, she almost becomes a different person. She’ll deny it viciously, but she’s on the same level as the rest of the Girls, and can be just as violent, hateful, and ugly as all of them. She’s so focused on making herself appear beautiful and perfect that she does nothing to improve her actual flaws.
Inconsistency’s fickle nature makes her impossible to get close to. Anyone who tries to reach out to her is going to have to face vicious mood swings, a violent temper, and dangerous levels of envy for any bit of happiness that they have. Inconsistency is out to steal the happiness of others, and she’s so empty inside that she has nothing to lose by breaking people to do it.
Beginning tends to be so nice that she enables people. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone, and in attempt to be kind of forgiving, she lets people who’ve hurt her get away with things that do no one any good. She’s bad at standing up for herself, and forgives so easily that she often lets people do the same things to her all over again. She does lose her temper rather easily, but even then, she’s back to being overly-forgiving as soon as she calms down again.
10. a way that they are improving on any of the above!
(Honestly, this is going to be more like “how is Beginning forcing them to improve on the above -3- Slight spoilers for story stuff, so it’s going under a cut)
Judgement isn’t doing much of anything to help herself… but Beginning is dragging her to something better whether she likes it or not. As the story progresses, Judgement is due to get her ego crushed, and that’s exactly what she needs in order to make her see how arrogant she’s truly been. On her own, she doesn’t see any reason why she needs to improve herself. After all, she’s the god of the World of Fog, and she’s convinced that nothing will stop her.
What gets to Secrecy is Beginning facing her down and refusing to let her escape. Secrecy tends to go off in her own little world and ignore the things that that she dislikes, but when she’s faced with someone who won’t let her keep her secrets, who genuinely wants to understand her, she freezes up bad. Everyone has always let her block out the world, so being forced to see someone who cares too much to let her go is what triggers her change.
Vanity has never met anyone who’s willing to bother to see her for who she truly is, and not just hate her for being ugly on the inside when they see it. But Beginning sees genuine beauty in her, worth that runs deeper than her pretty face. Beginning is the first person to draw a true smile out of Vanity, and that’s the moment when she has her feelings truly slip out of her control.
Non one has ever bother to call Inconsistency out for her lack of self. No one has ever pushed past the stolen pieces she wears like trophies to see what kind of empty person lurks beyond the flashy exterior. Beginning sees Inconsistency for the person she really is, and forces her to face the fact that she has no happiness of her own to fall back on. Inconsistency is truly reliant on other people to live, and this is the first time she has to admit it.
Beginning herself goes through a lot of change. She fights with everything she has to become a person that can do any measure of good in the world she’s been thrown into, examining her own flaws piece by piece and forcing herself to face the things that scare her. She’s legitimately trying to become a stronger person, and that’s more than can be said for anyone else in the World of Fog. It takes her a while to get it all right, but she’s a force to be reckoned with once she starts to find herself.

The year was 2010. Emo was just starting to die out (long live the scene). I was studying to become a secondary school teacher, and Katy Perry was shooting whipped cream out of her boobs...
Second albums, more often than not, fail to live up to the hype. And yet, Teenage Dream has somehow endured.
While Perry’s 2008 debut, One of the Boys, launched her into the mainstream, it really hasn’t aged all that well. On tracks like ‘Self Inflicted’ and ‘Fingerprints,’ she tries way too hard to emulate Paramore’s bold pop punk. On others, she attempts to rebel against her gospel roots by turning the bawdiness up to 10.
It can also come off pretty juvenile at times. The singer was almost 25 when she sang on the title track: ‘So over the summer, something changed/I started reading Seventeen and shaving my legs/And I studied Lolita religiously/And I walked right in to school and caught you staring at me.’
But let’s be honest: Even though it’s been declared ~problematic~, you still jam out to ‘I Kissed A Girl’ when you hear it, don’t you? I hadn’t listened to ‘Ur So Gay’ before this, either, but its slinky, jazz-infused vibe absolutely slaps.
Like Teenage Dream is also a product of its time, presenting pop at its most sugary, hook-laden and bombastic. It managed to spawn 5 No.1 singles, the second album in history to do so after Michael Jackson’s Bad, as well as a documentary, Part of Me. There’s even a deluxe edition, cleverly titled The Complete Confection. It was Perry at her peak.
You know the title track, of course. Evoking images of cherry red lipstick, tight denim and driving down an empty highway in summer, Perry desperately clings to the memory of young love, breathlessly pleading ‘don’t ever look back, don’t ever look back.’
‘The One That Got Away,’ meanwhile, is its bittersweet sequel, Perry's lovesick nostalgia now tinged with regret. Yet, the only thing I really remember about the song is the video starring Cassian Andor himself, Diego Luna, as Perry’s past love, the beautifully dishevelled and tortured artist of my dreams (Dear God, that penetrating stare...) He’s also the only reason why anyone bothered to watch Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, if it wasn’t already obvious.
First single ‘California Gurls,’ on the other hand, is pure pop exuberance at its most campy and carefree, indicative of a more innocent time when it wasn’t driven by algorithms or social media. ‘Firework’ is still a go-to empowerment anthem for just about every kind of montage imaginable. ‘ET’ (featuring a pre-’presidential’ Kanye) is heavily-synthesised cyber pop that doesn’t get nearly enough love.
But Teenage Dream, in retrospect, has quite a few misses. ‘Peacock’ is just one big, long, glitchy dick joke. ‘Not Like The Movies’ is big ballad schmaltz. The brassy soft rock of ‘Hummingbird Heartbeat,’ meanwhile, opens with a hell of a line: ‘You make me feel like I'm losing my virginity/The first time, every time when you're touching me.’ And I’m pretty sure ‘What Am I Living For?’ is partly plagiarised from Justin Timberlake’s ‘My Love.’ Even Pitchfork awarded Teenage Dream a rather tame 6.8 in their recent retrospective review.
By the time Perry released Prism in 2013 – her ‘darker, moodier’ record - she had shifted further into ‘inspirational anthems.’ There was the inescapable mega-hit ‘Roar,’ the saccharine power ballad ‘Unconditionally’ and the Eastern-tinged ‘Legendary Lovers,’ complete with wellness and spiritual motifs.
But it wasn’t without its bangers: ‘Dark Horse’ (featuring Juicy J) jumped onto the trap pop bandwagon just in time with its subterranean bass and eerie, otherworldly synths. Even the slick, 90s-indebted ‘This Is How We Do’ has a certain charm.
Prism also marked the point where Perry’s invincibility began to wear off. Where the masses once lapped up her candy-coated antics, they were now calling her out for wearing braids in the video for ‘This Is How We Do’ and dressing up as a geisha during a performance at the American Music Awards.
And they would only get louder during her era of ‘purposeful pop.’ Released in the aftermath of the 2016 US election, Witness was meant to cement Perry as ‘Artist. Activist. Conscious’ - as her Twitter bio read at the time. She had joined Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail. On Instagram, she was quoting the likes of Socrates and Plato. She was Woke now, and she was telling anyone who’d listen.
Yet you’d be hard pressed to find much trace of this ‘purposeful pop’ on Witness, bar the first single, ‘Chained to the Rhythm.’ Written with Sia and Max Martin, the singer implores listeners to ‘put your rose-coloured glasses on and party on’ amid whirling, colourful synths.
The rest of the record, however, is made up of either soppy, overly sentimental ballads (‘Save As Draft,’ ‘Pendulum,’ ‘Into Me You See’), awkward lyrical turns and CHVRCHES/Purity Ring knock-offs (‘Hey Hey Hey,’ ‘Roulette,’ ‘Deja Vu’).
Funnily enough, Purity Ring’s Corin Roddick produced some of Witness’ better tracks: ‘Mind Maze’ and the soaring ballad ‘Miss You More, along with ‘Bigger Than Me.’
Final track ‘Act My Age,’ meanwhile, feels like a pre-emptive strike against the criticism Witness would inevitably receive (‘They say that I might lose my Midas touch/They also say I may become irrelevant/But who the fuck are they anyway?’).
Then there’s the godawful ‘Bon Appetit’ (featuring Migos) with its food-related double entendres. It was ‘Yummy’ before ‘Yummy’ existed. Seriously, I just wanna see Orlando Bloom say he likes this song with a straight face...
But I will still defend ‘Swish Swish’ to the death. Do the lyrics suck? Yeah, but Perry’s never been the strongest lyricist. But its pulsing 90s house beat does a lot of the heavy lifting, along with Nicki Minaj’s spitfire verse.
The promotional rollout for Witness, meanwhile, proved just as messy. Among the most infamous was a 72-hour livestream, where voyeurs got to witness Perry sleep, meditate, do yoga and welcome a random assortment of guests, including Gordon Ramsey and activist DeRay McKesson. Then there was the meme-laden video for ‘Swish Swish. She literally served herself up on a platter in the clip for ‘Bon Appetit.’ She tried reigniting her feud with Taylor Swift on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Needless to say, it reeked of desperation.
Looking back, though, you can’t help but feel a little bad for Perry, trying so hard to please only for it to blow up spectacularly in her face. So devastated, it sent her to the Hoffman Institute, which offers an abridged version of therapy. As she later told the Guardian:
‘I think the universe was like, ‘OK, all right, let’s have some humble pie here […] My negative thoughts were not great. They didn’t want to plan for a future. I also felt like I could control it by saying, ‘I’ll have the last word if I hurt myself or do something stupid and I’ll show you’ — but really, who was I showing?’
But although Witness lacked the perkiness of Teenage Dream or the cartoonish charm of One of the Boys, it shines best on its darker moments.
‘Dance With The Devil’ has the kind of smoky allure that wouldn’t look too out of place on a BANKS album, while ‘Power’ is a revelation. Produced by Jack Garrett, what could’ve been yet another dull empowerment ballad is turned into a gritty, groaning slab of vaporwave pop, with sultry sax riffs that sample, of all things, Smokey Robinson’s ‘Being With You.’ It’s electric as fuck. You believe it when Perry sings: ‘’Cause I'm a goddess and you know it/Some respect, you better show it/I'm done with you siphoning my power.’
If the singer had just done away with the whole ‘purposeful pop’ concept and stuck with Garrett, Roddick and Terror Jr’s Felix Snow as her core producing group, Witness probably wouldn’t have been half the failure it was. It could’ve had a chance to grow on people, the kind of slow burn Perry could’ve gotten away with at this point in her career. The cyberpop dystopian feel also could’ve gone hand in hand with her newfound wokeness, echoing people’s fear and anger in the aftermath of Trump’s win. But alas, we’ll never know...
While the rollout for Witness over the top, Smile’s was lacklustre and wildly inconsistent.
First single ‘Never Really Over’ came out a whole 15 months before the release of Smile to little fanfare, along with a hippie-inspired video to match. ‘Harleys in Hawaii’ later followed, which also stuck with the flower power aesthetic. Other singles - ‘Daisies’ and the title track – seemingly came and went without a trace.
So how did Katy Perry get to this point? And is there any chance of coming back?
It’s hard to say. A lot of artists go through a rough patch or two:   Miley's twerking antics divided audiences when she released 2013’s Bangerz. Taylor Swift’s reputation divided audiences. Only in recent years has Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP been vindicated. Such is the nature of music and pop culture in general. It’s fickle, just one vicious cycle after another; an endless quest for trend-bait that'll never end.
Right now, disco pop is going through a renaissance, while hyperpop reigns supreme. Dua Lip and Charli XCX are basically untouchable at the moment. TikTok has taken over from Top 40 radio when it comes to breaking hits, while the gap between album releases has also grown shorter and shorter. Even the nature of fandom has changed, shifting from old-school elitism to the bloodsport that is ‘stanning,’ along with an unhealthy amount of ‘endless simping’ (to quote a close friend of mine).
Perry, meanwhile, has failed to keep up, choosing to play it safe in order to avoid further scrutiny. But in doing so, she strips away the humour, the mischief and other idiosyncrasies that fans fell in love with in the first place.
But what choice did she have? As Junkee’s Sam Murphy notes in his own piece about Perry’s rise and fall:
‘At that point, you have two choices as a popstar — hunt for relevancy or make what comes naturally to you. Perry chose the former and came unstuck. She inserted vague wokeness into her songs as cancel culture infiltrated pop, tacked on rap features as hip-hop became the dominant commercial genre, and worked with producers who may have been able to find her credibility.’
(Full disclosure: I started writing my piece on Perry back in December 2020, so the timing of Murphy’s piece and mine is purely coincidental).
Even if you don’t believe in cancel culture, no one actually wants to be cancelled. It’s just not good for PR, especially for someone with an image as glossy and as carefully put-together as Perry’s. Even now, she continues to atone for Witness, telling the LA Times: ‘Having more awareness and consciousness, I no longer can just be a blissful, ignorant idealist who sings about love and relationships […] Even my travels have afforded me a new perspective on cultures, class systems and the inequality around the world, not just in the United States,’ though she carefully avoids the subject of politics on Smile.
But redemption is possible. Swift – Perry's one-time nemesis - was a total pariah back in 2016, mocked for her Girl Squad, for diddling the Hiddles while on the rebound from Calvin Harris and criticised for remaining coy on her political leanings. Now she’s earning indie cred with two of 2020’s biggest albums, folklore and evermore, and has thrown her support behind a number of social causes.
The devil works hard, but Swift’s PR team work harder. I might not be her biggest fan, but Taylor works Kris Jenner levels of mastery when it comes to rebuilding public sentiment. Thanks to her newfound indie cred, you’ve almost forgotten about the pastel atrocity ‘Me!,’ her 2019 duet with that insufferable drama kid cliché, Brendon Urie. Shifting her songs away from petty grievances to more original storytelling was also a smart move.
But while Swift has managed to move on, Perry seems to have fallen into the same adult contemporary trap as Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera and Pink, one that ensnares many female artists over 30 (Though many have also managed to escape – Gaga, Taylor, Beyonce, Rihanna, Kesha, Robyn...)
As ‘woke’ as the industry and fans at large might think themselves to be, they’re still pretty ageist. There's still an expectation to ‘mature’ your sound as you age, to become more ‘serious.’ No more fun, no more experimenting, boomer. But when you do end up filing away the edges, you’re called dull, generic and past your prime. Perry said as much on the aforementioned ‘Act My Age. You just. can't. win.
And yet, many female artists over 30 have created some of their best work yet in just the past year or so: Hayley Williams made the dramatic shift from pop rock to low-key, Radiohead-inspired tunes on her solo debut, Petals For Armor. Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters was hailed by critics as her most bold, urgent and visceral. Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? was a cut of understated disco pop elegance. Carly Rae Jepsen, meanwhile, released an equally stellar companion to 2019’s Dedicated.
At this point in her career, Perry could afford to follow a similar path to that of the Canadian singer. Once the meme value of ‘Call Me Maybe’ wore off, along with her mainstream appeal, Jepsen finally had a chance to discover real creative freedom, pushing her sound to greater heights and earning critical acclaim, all without having to compromise her love for catchy hooks and bold synth pop arrangements.
A couple of years ago, a Reddit user made a post about participating in a focus group held by Perry’s label to discuss why she’s ‘no longer one of the[ir] most notable female pop artists,’ and ‘what can [they] do with her image or marketing to make you care about her again?’
It’s depressing to think that an artist as accomplished as her needs a focus group to help solve her identity crisis. There really is no easy answer. Hopefully, Perry will be able to return more vibrant and assured than ever, on her own terms...
