Dozens of Ukrainian children from a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine were taken to Belarus and sent to “emergency survival training” with the Belarusian military, according to local media.

The Belarus 4 Mogilev state television channel reported on Wednesday that 35 children from the city of Antratsyt in eastern Ukraine, which Russia has occupied since 2014, were sent to the eastern Belarusian city of Mogilev, where they were taught “how to behave in extreme situations” in exercises with the Belarusian military.

In the report, the children — some of whom are wearing tracksuits with Russian flags printed on their sleeves — are shown holding on to each other and covering their faces during a fire drill.

Thousands of Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia and Belarus from Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. In July 2023, Russian Children’s Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova put the figure of Ukrainian children “received” by Russia at 700,000, claiming most were accompanied by their parents or other relatives.

A study by Yale University found that between September 2022 and May 2023, over 2,400 Ukrainian children aged 6 to 17 were deported to Belarus from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine, which are occupied by Russian forces.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko met with a group of deported Ukrainian kids last month, promising to “embrace these children, bring them to our home, keep them warm and make their childhood happier.”

In March 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lvova-Belova, accusing them of overseeing the “unlawful deportation” of Ukrainian children.

Four-year-old girl Alisa from Mariupol was hiding in the bombshelters of Azovstal within last 2 months. Alisa’s mother's name is Victoria Obidina and she is a doctor. From the first days of the siege of the city, the child was in a shelter, where a temporary hospital was located and where her mother assisted the wounded soldiers, while Alisa was helping her mom as much as she could: she was bringing the medicines and cheering the wounded. She saw so many dreadful scenes, as no child should see! 

During the last evacuation from the territory of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, led by the United Nations and the Red Cross, the Russian invaders separated both mother and daughter. Alisa arrived in Zaporizhia on May, 8th, but her mother was taken to so-called “filtration camp”, organized by the Russian invaders. No one knows where exactly Victoria is and what horrors she survives now.

We, undersigned activists, celebrities, politicians and non-governmental organizations representatives, call on the United Nations and the Red Cross to rescue Victoria Obidina, Alisa's mother from the filtration camp and to bring Victoria Obidina back to her daughter on the territory, controlled by Ukraine! 

The United Nations and the Red Cross took the responsibility to evacuate ALL the civilians from the territory of Azovstal plant, and they FAILED to do it. As long as Alisa’s mother Victoria and other citizens of Mariupol remain in the filtration camp on the occupied territory, as long as many more prisoners-of-war remain from Azovstal remain in the filtration camp, the evacuation is not completed!

The exact same things are going on right now but we ignore them. We watch from a safe distance of decades. But the same kind of drama and heroes are right now in the occupied areas. We cannot see much of t but it is still evident. We have clues of what goes on there. How evil the occupying powers are. But people ignore this--why? Because it's too distressing? Because it doesn't interest us if it's real? Because it doesn't fit into our political worldview?

We tell these stories because it was so momentous. And now these stories will be told fully... but we should still see it now if we are interested at all in such things.

It matters more now because it's going on now and real people now are dying. Being tortured.

Thousands of Ukrainian children forcibly relocated to Russia are at risk of losing their cultural heritage, a new report from The Guardian claims.

Somewhere between 20,000 and 700,000 Ukrainian children have been relocated from their homes to Russia or Russian-occupied territories, often involuntarily, and put under a program aimed at erasing their emotional and psychological ties to Ukraine. “Every day they said to me that I would be staying here for ever and would never leave Russia,” one Ukrainian child told The Guardian, recounting more than a year in Russian custody. “They told me that Ukraine doesn’t exist, that it never existed, that we’re all Russians” …

“At times the other kids would beat me for being pro-Ukrainian.”

Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Andriy Kostin, claimed that Russia’s action constituted the largest mass deportation of children in Europe since World War II. He said Russia was trying to destroy Ukraine by “severing familial bonds and erasing the Ukrainian identity of the deported children.” Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s first lady, has called for international help to bring them home.

During the last 24 hours, the Commissioner's psychological helpline was contacted by persons from Oleksandrivka, Kherson Oblast, who gave permission to publish information on the facts of sexual violence.

Two girls aged 12 and 15 were raped by russians.

A 6-month-old girl was raped by a russian with a teaspoon.

Two two-year-old twin boys and their mother were at home. Five russians broke in, one held the mother, the other two raped the children orally and anal. The children died from ruptures and blood loss.

A three-year-old boy was raped in front of his mother by two russians, and the child died of his injuries.

Sexual violence is strictly prohibited by Article 27 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949.

Rape as a war crime is the most serious crime and one of the components of genocide.

I ask the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sexual Violence in Conflict Pramila Patten, to initiate an investigation into these facts and bring the perpetrators to justice, as well as take measures to prevent sexual violence by russian troops.

I call on the world community to ensure the imposition of personal sanctions against political leaders, russian military commanders and perpetrators of these terrible crimes!

The filtration camps appear to serve purposes similar to Russian and Soviet camps in earlier conflicts, from World War II to the Chechen wars of the 1990s: to identify civilians who they believe can assimilate into Russian culture and Russian rule, and punish or remove those who won’t.

“Filtration camps are rooted in Soviet and Russian history,” said Khrystyna Holynska, a defense and policy researcher at the Rand Corporation. “It was a way to, first, get rid of those who could pose a threat to the regime by resisting it. And secondly, it is a way to spread fear and sow distrust among the rest to prevent them from even thinking about resisting.”
