Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Ohhhh what's three times the size of an elephant, over 500 years old, and lives under the sea? Big Momma! She is a massive protites coral that's 6.4 m (21 ft) high and 41.8 m (135 ft) around at the base; her age was estimated based on samples of her skeletal core and the fact that porites corals only grow about 1 cm (0.39 in) per year.

FOTD #040 : fairy fingers! (clavaria fragilis)

fairy fingers (also called white worm coral & white spindle) is a saprotrophic fungus in the family clavariaceae. it is usually found across the northern hemisphere, but has also been found in australia & south africa :-)

the big question : can i bite it?? yeah !! though it is nonpoisonous, it is too fragile to be of substantial worth in cooking, but it is edible nonetheless.

c. fragilis description :

"the fruit bodies of c. fragilis are irregularly tubular, smooth to furrowed, sometimes compressed, very fragile, white, up to 15 cm (6 in) tall by 5 mm (0.2 in) thick, & typically grow in dense clusters. the tip of the fruit body tapers to a point, & may yellow & curve with age. there is no distinct stalk, although it is evident as a short, semitransparent zone of tissue at the base of the club. microscopically, the hyphae of the flesh are swollen up to 12 µm wide & lack clamp connections. the spores are smooth, colourless, ellipsoid to oblong, measuring 5–7 by 3–4 µm. the spores are white in deposit. the basidia (spore bearing cells) measure 40–50 by 6–8 µm, & lack clamps at their bases."

For this weeks Fungus Friday I decided to take inspo from Feefals Funguary challenge and sort of combine some of the fungi from both the Celestial and Demonic week themes, Resulting in this sapphic mushroom pair that I think are quite cute.

For the celestial character I chose to incorporate both Lilac Coral fungus and Angel Wing mushrooms. For the demonic character I selected Birds Nest fungus, Dead Man's Fingers, and Bleeding Tooth mushrooms.

i am a career defender for life, and that includes the “career pack” from the 10th games (coral, mizzen, treech, and tanner)! i literally just found out mizzen was 13 and the thought of coral, who is seen as the “villain” in the 10th games, keeping him around in her pack just because he was from 4 too, not because he was big and strong or particularly powerful, makes me SICK. i am SICK. i read I’ll Meet You On The Beach by redrasberries and sobbed. they were just kids, man.

Coral and Finger Mushrooms

Don't have a lot of photos of these, but they're neat. Photos mine, unedited.

Artomyces pyxidatus, the crown-tipped coral mushroom, is edible and a neat texture in soup.

Clavaria fragilis, fairy fingers, are also edible but I didn't know what it was at the time of the photos and so haven't used them yet.

Clavaria zollingeri, violet coral, is edible as well, but I didn't know what this was at the time either and haven't seen it since.

Xylaria polymorpha, dead man's fingers, are great in frittata! This is the stage you want them in. I really should photos of a full flush, but I always get excited when they come up and start picking. lol You can see the stumps of some I grabbed.

Word of caution: cook all wild edible mushrooms before eating. Even if they don't poison you immediately they can have longterm effects.

Word of ethics: leave a third of the young ones you find in the wild and only if there are a lot of them.

He normally comes and goes, this being a rare moment where the spy known of 'Coral Blue' is present enough to answer such inquires. He's not sure what the other man wants him to say, if anything specific. His eyes slide from the beret down to perfectly polished boots, buffed to a near mirror shine.

It's always the eyes. They were like his own; and not. Everyone had their own badge of distinction chiseled into their thousand-mile stare. From the countless loyalists, it was a flat and cold hardness- an animal glint that wasn't the perfect emptiness that others had.

Jae's was unreadable. This was by design. Jae was a man who didn't even exist. Sure, Jae-hyo Yoon had a passport in his name, there was a SNILS number, and even a brief life that had been lived in the snowy streets of Moscow that was little more than a collection of banalities.

Aside from the esteemed favor of the Colonel, he was on his own. He had his mission, he had his long con, and that was it.

And that was great .

It sure as Hell wasn't sucking up to grimly suited penguins (his 'superiors')and having sleazy pols in the KGB expect him to, ah, entertain- clap their grimy paws on his hips and smugly mention that they had the best position for him.

"Ah, Raidenovitch? A sleek winter mink of a man, soft to the touch, but there are needle-sharp teeth honed to deadly precision you shouldn't ignore," he replies evenly, smirking slightly at the mental image of dearest Vanya with his petal-pink lips curled into a feral snarl of pleasure as he ripped a traitor's fingernails straight out of their fleshy beds with little more than a pair of pliers and sheer enthusiasm.

"It would be wise not to underestimate him. The Colonel's overwhelming presence is certainly appreciated, but he doesn't need Volgin to protect him at all hours. He's perfectly capable of handling himself, if there was ever any doubt. You'd be hard pressed to find a more loyal soul than he, whatever he lacks in sheer bulk and muscle, he makes up for with tenacity and no small amount of inspiring madness."

Smiling to himself as though fondly reminiscing the actions of a favored child or quirky pet, Yoon places a palm over his heart in endearment.

"I find myself quite fond of our little mascot, don't you?"

I've got a random question!! how do you think our fave tako texts? perfect punctuation perfect grammar capitalizes every letter? yes or no to emojis? abbreviations? does he pick up on slang? does he text more casually with the tweels because they're close? I'm dying to know tbh!!

I feel like with the other Housewardens and students he’s stiffer, more polite, and grammatically and punctually correct. He has an image to uphold, after all, and naturally this extends to texting. He can’t look foolish through messages, so he’ll be sure his texts are thought out before he sends them. Plus, since he’s attending NRC on the surface he’s had to learn about how to text properly and not look silly while doing so just so no one will poke fun. Phones and other technologies can’t exist in the sea, so texting is a completely new world for him and the twins.

It’s a different story for Jade and Floyd. I like to think there are times when he uses perfect grammar and punctuation, usually when informing them of important matters (i.e. the lounge is understaffed and he needs them to pick up a shift or he sends a list of ingredients he needs them to procure for a new potion he’s brewing; sometimes these messages are terse because they’re demands, not suggestions). Azul and the twins probably have their own lingo for certain things so it won’t look suspicious if anyone stumbles across their messages. He won’t text Jade or Floyd to beat the life out of someone. He has class! He’ll tell them that they need to pay a dear friend a visit to collect some payment they owe. If he’s in a hurry, he’ll just order Floyd to have his fun squeezing their dear friend.

But I also think that when he’s particularly excited or panicked he’ll send multiple messages at once without much thought. He’s the type who adjusts to the other person’s texting style, so if he’s messaging Idia he might throw in some slang or abbreviations just to keep a common connection.

The trio definitely have a group chat and they share so much gossip amongst each other about the other students. It’s so fun. The twins also like to tease Azul plenty of times in the group chat by sending emoticons he might not immediately understand the meaning of (and images of human creations they think are interesting but would definitely make Azul cringe (i.e. all things octopus (plushies, erotic toys, decor, etc etc)). They like the ocean emoji set the most because they’re sea creatures. Floyd likes to send the most random emoji combinations (as well as the ones for sexual jokes like the eggplant).

They also have a group text with you and the twins make it their mission to clown on Azul whenever he’s (attempting to) flirt with you. :)

Floyd and Azul over text are like Soraru and Mafumafu on twt. Azul blocks his contact whenever he’s irritated or when Floyd’s being annoying, much like how Soraru would block Mafu whenever he tweeted goofy stuff at him. OTL you’d think Jade would play peacekeeper, but he loves to watch the both of them bicker because it’s just so entertaining.
