Fighting for Strength

The monotonous beeping of the heart monitor and the hiss of the respirator are the only sounds in the hospital room. A man sits vigilant at the bedside of his daughter who has just turned eleven today and she isn’t awake to even know it. He holds her small frail hand in his much larger one and presses a kiss to her forehead. With a rough voice he begins to sing. “Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy b-birthday dear Liliowy. H-Happy birthday to…” He chokes back a sob. “...you.”

Three years ago, Liliowy was a happy, healthy and perfect child. Her green eyes were always bright and full of childlike wonder. Then, in an instant, everything changed, and the man’s world came crashing down around him.

A stretch of wet pavement, a dark mile or two of road, frost in the air and a deer was all it took to take away everything that made his life worth living. His little Lili has shown no signs of improvement and something inside him dies a little more each day that her bright green eyes don’t open.

Two years ago, they tried to wake her up but had to immediately sedate her again when she had a mild stroke. She was barely nine when it happened. All the extra wires and tubes seemed like something out of a horror movie. He just wanted to see those beautiful bright green eyes framed by curly chocolate curls looking at him with love.

A year and a half ago, he lost his closest friend after they had a heated argument. He knows that his daughter is still there. She’s a fighter just like him and he refuses to give up on her. His friend tried to make him see sense and suggested other options.

They got into a verbal altercation that would’ve become physical if…if someone hadn’t stepped in. The last thing his friend said to him was how he was living in denial and that he wasn’t the good father he liked to think and that if he truly loves his daughter, he’ll let her go.

Since then, his little Lili has only had two visitors aside from himself. Her Uncle Mikolaj and Allison. The latter still manages to surprise him. After all, they’d only been dating a little less than a year when the accident occurred. He’d half expected her to cut and run but the immense relief he feels when she shows up every single day and has done so for the past three and a half years keeps him going. She’ll bring him home cooked meals and she’ll read Lili’s favorite books, The Hardy Boys.

He admires this woman and loves her with all of his heart. He hopes that when Lili wakes up—because he knows with every fiber of his being that she will wake up—that he can finally tell Allison he loves her. He’d been too scared to do so before, uncertain if she would stay. He also had to think about his daughter first and foremost.

Four years since the accident, it’s Lili’s twelfth birthday and once again, he sings to her. Allison comes in the evening with a bundle in her arms. He bursts into tears when he sees the handmade quilt. It’s made up of shades of purple—Lili’s favorite color—and squares full of butterflies, violets, lilacs and of course lilies.

He could have kissed her or dropped to one knee right then, but the tears clouded his vision even as he wrapped the quilt around his daughter, tucking her in. He’s so tired and as his eyes flutter shut, a pair of lips caress his forehead, easing him into a peaceful sleep.

He’s awoken by a soft squeezing of his hand six months shy of five years after the accident. It takes him a few minutes to form a coherent thought but then his eyes flick up to his daughter’s face. The green eyes he hadn’t seen since the night of the accident when she screamed: “Daddy!” are peering at him.

He flails and presses the call button even as he stands up and cups her face. The tears slip down his cheeks as he kisses her forehead over and over again. “Jestem tutaj, mój mały fiołek.”

She blinks at him a couple tears slipping down her cheeks.

He dries her tears with his thumbs and smiles through his own tears. “Tatuś jest tutaj. Kocham cię. Tak bardzo cię kocham.”

It takes a week for his daughter to move more than her eyes and hand, but she doesn’t speak until a month later. “Kocham Cię tato. Tęskniłem za tobą.”

He cries and he doesn’t care who knows, hears or sees. She shivers a little and he tucks the quilt tighter around her. He knows Ally is making her another quilt now that she’s growing.

Lili quirks a brow at the quilt and he can’t help the fond smile that forms on his face. “Allison made it,” he whispers like he’s imparting a secret.

A smile forms on his daughter’s face as if the news is the best thing in the world. He sends a text to Allison asking her to come by again. With a job change, Allison hasn’t been able to make it every day, but she did call out of work the day Lili woke up.

Lili doesn’t remember her mother at all. He doesn’t like to think about her too much himself. It hurts too much to do so. Allison doesn’t actively try to take her place, but it ends up happening anyway. Both father and daughter have no objections.

Seven years after the accident, the small family of three gets to go home. Lili breathes in the scent of fresh air greedily as she clings to her dad’s hand. The fingers of his other hand are laced with Allison’s who’s left hand sports an amethyst engagement ring. Lili helped him pick it out. They’ll get married six months from now and he can’t wait.

Nine years after the accident, Lili graduates high school at the top of her class and waves to her mother. Allison, who is now seven months pregnant, has more than earned and deserves the title. She beams at her father who is holding one of her siblings in each arm, another little one clamped onto each of his pant legs.

Both of them watch her, their eyes brimming with tears as she gives her speech. In it she talks about what it means to never give up on the things and the people you love. She talks about her dad and how he never gave up on her. She knows how to fight, how to survive and how to thrive because he taught her how and showed her how. At this she meets her dad’s gaze who smiles proudly at her with his heart nearly bursting with happiness. He knew she would fight, survive and he knew she would live and thrive.

Ten years after the accident, he drops Lili off at Willow Arbor University of the Arts, for her freshman year of college. It’s the first time in over a decade that he won’t have her in his line of sight. It’s okay though because she’s a Gajos and a Gajos won’t let anything, or anyone stand in their way.

Thirteen years after the accident, Lili graduates college. She is again at the top of her class and that night; she calls her father to tell him that Nikolaj proposed. He knew the young man would be doing so as said young man had asked for his blessing and permission. Their house is always so full of life with nine children aside from Lili, all of them at various stages of their lives. Freya is their second oldest and she’s eight years old. Fioletowy (Fio) and Leofitowy (Leo), a daughter and son respectively, are now seven years old. Evie and Ivy are now five years old. Mika is now three years old. Jaylin and Jayme are two years old. Then the last but not least—though probably Allison’s last pregnancy—is due in three months.

Fifteen years after the accident, he walks Lili down the aisle and with a deep breath places her hand in Nikolaj’s hand before stepping back. It’s hard but the day is perfect. The love in his daughter’s eyes when she looks at her new husband is the same as how he himself looks at Allison. There are no more kiddos on the way for them anymore, but every day is still a new adventure.

At the reception, Lili tears up as her father gives a speech. “I always knew my daughter was strong. When people said give up, I kept going. When people said she was gone, I dismissed it. When people said she’d never wake up, I put them in their place. I didn’t give up and as you can see…neither did she.

“Over twenty years ago my daughter was critically injured and for years she was in a coma. Every birthday I sang to her. Every Christmas, Thanksgiving and holiday I played music, decorated her room and told her stories. I never left her side.

“The day her eyes opened all the weight on my shoulders vanished because my baby was awake. She fought and she survived and every day since she’s thrived. So today we celebrate the union of strength and compassion, of love and commitment, of happiness, joy and hope. Today I see her strength and love. I see the way she looks at Niko and I’ve only seen that look once before. It’s the look in my eyes when I look at my wife. So, I know that this is forever and every single day I am grateful that my little Lili has a forever when so many said it was impossible. I love you always, my little violet. Love, Daddy.”

He watches Lili’s first dance as a married woman as he cradles child number twelve in his arms as he slowly sways back and forth. His eyes scan the sea of faces: his wife, Allison, who is still just as beautiful as the first time he saw her, his children Lili, Freya, Fio, Leo, Evie, Ivy, Mika, Jaylin, Jayme, Rhys, Ryder and little Mariska. Life is...Well, life is perfect.

Seventeen years after the accident, Lili has her first child, a girl that she names Philomena—Mena for short—and he becomes a grandfather for the first time. He always knew his daughter was strong and would wake up again. When she places her baby in his arms, he tears up and kisses little Mena’s forehead. His daughter has tears in her eyes too. When he meets her gaze he whispers, “You’re going to be an amazing mother.”

Lili smiles and chuckles wetly. “Well, I have the best examples to emulate. I’ll be an amazing parent because I have an amazing father. I love you, Daddy.”

He chokes back a sob and wraps an arm around his daughter, Mena yawning softly in his arms. “I love you too, mój mały fiołek.”
