Ghostemane en El Teatrito: horror, trap y oscuridad en envase pequeño

En medio del descontrol del público, e introducido por un explosivo DJ set que puso a punto la pista, Eric Whitney se presentó como Ghostemane por primera vez en Argentina. Energía animal, oscuridad y una muestra de cómo se debe manejar al público.

Con su cara enfundada en una máscara con detalles luminosos y su torso completamente desnudo, Parv0, DJ de Ghostemane, salió a escena y cumplió con su rol de encargado de dejar al público listo para el comienzo del show. Con lo último que le quedaba de voz, comenzó su presentación pidiendo mucho ruido al público, que respondió con un rugido y una avalancha, representando ambas acciones la ansiedad de la espera por Eric Whitney.

El set estuvo en línea con lo que más tarde sería el show: trap oscuro de bajos bien gordos, un contraste constante entre graves y agudos y un sonido siempre chorreante de una energía espesa y casi ectoplásmica. El público seguía respondiendo a cada track con saltos, gritos y mucho agite. Faltaba para que la estrella de la noche estuviera sobre el escenario, pero la entrada ya estaba valiendo cada centavo.

Cuando el DJ hizo sonar “Beamer Boy”, del fallecido Lil Peep, una gran parte del público emitió un emotivo grito y acompañó la letra del tema. Otro homenaje fue “Smack My Bitch Up”, de The Prodigy, cuyo líder Keith Flint, fue encontrado muerto en su casa hace muy pocos días. 21 Savage y Lil Pump, entre otros, fueron llenando la lista de temas mezclados por el dueño de las bandejas. Para cerrar el set, pidió que abran un mosh pit —uno que nunca se había cerrado ni habría de hacerlo a lo largo de la presentación— y dio fin a su set con “(SIC)” de Slipknot.

Momentos después se presentó un asistente, pidiendo que no usen los teléfonos celulares durante el primer tema. Sin momentos de por medio, el rapero oriundo de Florida se hizo presente en las tablas y la gente se comprimió, pasando a ocupar un tercio del espacio que ocupaba hasta el momento. El primer tema fue “Desolation” que sirvió para liberar de una vez por todas las energías acumuladas por la espera.

Un detalle sin dudas significativo fue la forma de agradecer en un castellano más que correcto al final de cada tema. La contracara relajada de un Whitney salvaje y desatado que no paró de moverse un momento y que no dejó de cantar en ningún momento. Un flow que destaca y un timbre que contrasta con los graves bajos de los beats son dos armas infalibles de las que Ghostemane hizo gala la noche del domingo.

El músico norteamericano libera contínuamente un caudal de energía que parece que no va a agotarse nunca, aunque siempre y cuando tenga como elementos sonoros a una pista sobre la cual cantar, gritar y rapear y a un público que esté ávido de todo lo que él tiene para ofrecer.

La constante debajo del escenario fue el clásico “olé olé olé, Ghostemane, Ghostemane”, que en varias ocasiones fue emulado por un músico que se mostró muy divertido con las formas de cariño que le ofrecía el público argentino. El recinto situado en la zona del Congreso fue una fiesta oscura durante poco más de una hora, donde todos los detalles aportaban un poco más a la estética del artista y donde todos querían más y más de todo lo que estaban teniendo.

Para “Ballgag”, el rapero pidió que se siente todo el mundo, así como antes había pedido que se separen en dos columnas y que se insulten unos con otros, así como también pidió constantemente que abrieran el famoso mosh pit; ese que seguía abierto desde el pesadísimo set de Parv0. Todas las actitudes del público fueron una muestra del carisma y el dominio de la audiencia que tiene el músico estadounidense.

La tríada final estuvo compuesta por “Mercury Retrograde”, “Venom” y “Euronymous”. Fue entre estos últimos temas donde Ghostemane ofreció un gesto clásico: tomó una guitarra y con tres certeros golpes la destruyó por completo para el goce de todos los presentes. Ghostemane no pide: Ghostemane ordena. Y tiene el derecho a hacerlo. En el show, él puede ser amo y señor porque cumple. Porque le ofrece a su público una propuesta determinada y termina por brindarles una que siempre termina siendo increíblemente mejor.

A new grandchild and the tragic events unfolding in Houston have me feeling overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude.

Meanwhile I have been re-reading novels by Eve Babitz, one of my favorite writers who in the 1960s and ’70s wrote about the cultural milieu of Los Angeles and touched on the topics of social unrest, wildfires and earthquakes. An entertaining and poetic acknowledgments section precedes her classic 1974 novel Eve’s Hollywood.

Babitz’s lyrical structure and this collision of thoughts and events inspired me to write about a few of my favorite things (and characters) gracing our whacky industry.

Let’s call this my 2017 Acknowledgements Unlist.

To Mary & Peter homebuyer

But also to the bank that made them a loan and to the escrow company that recorded their sale
