TLDR on Fanworks legality
Fanworks are under Fair Use laws, these vary in countries. (Hint: It is your job to acquaint yourself with your Country’s variation of Fair Use laws.)
Fanworks are not Public Domain. A piece must be within the Public Domain (have no active license holder due to ineligibility of copyrite protection or copyrite has expired) to be classified as such. The IP (Intellectual Property) is, usually, not in Public Domain. (Hint: it is your job to acquaint yourself with your Country’s variation of IP laws) Here’s a website that has Resources for Public Domain Materials.
Creational spin offs of Public Domain media can become new IP. However, would still need to be registered Copyrite to become Formal Intellectual Property protected under Copyrite laws. (Hint: It is your job to acquaint yourself with your Country’s variation of Copyrite laws.)  Example: Just because Beethoven’s songs are in Public Domain, does not mean I can go and use TSO’s ( Trans-Siberian Orchestra ) variations of Beethoven’s songs. TSO’s Beethoven creational spin offs are under Copyright © – Atlantic Recording Corporation & Copyright © – WEA International Inc.
Fans hold ownership to non IP elements in their Fanworks. This is under Fair Use laws and IP laws.
The Licensed IP Owner does not have ownership of Fanworks. They only hold ownership over their IP such as Character Designs, Character Names, Location Appearances, Location names, and (sometimes) Plot. All is dependent on what the IP license Protects. Restrictions do apply. (Hint: It is your job to acquaint yourself with the IP restrictions of the Media you create Fan pieces of.)
It is theft of both informal and formal IP to use Fanworks to train AI without permission from both IP holders. (Hint: Copyrite Laws, Fair Use Laws, IP Laws.)

♥ Pairing: Lucia von Obsidian x Nokto Klein
♥ Event: Kinktober
♥ Day 2: Friends with Benefits
♥ Warnings: misuse of a desk; smut
♥ wc: 1.2k
Tumblr media
Getting permission to visit Rhodolite with her elder brother was hard earned. Her father didn't approve of her leaving the castle unless absolutely necessary. Lucia wandered much like a ghost haunting the halls of the palace, driven to a crazed state by being caged.
This was a rare occasion indeed. An entire year had passed since her last trip to Rhodolite. Although the countries were enemies, there was still a bit of cordiality, usually in the form of negotiations or a simple party in which the princes of the surrounding countries gathered.
Only the castle henchman, Sariel, was there to greet the Obsidian siblings. Gilbert had his own agenda for visiting Rhodolite, and it hardly concerned his sister. The state of her country wasn't something that she was allowed to be concerned about. It certainly wasn't the reason she'd begged to come along.
Lucia parted ways with her brother without a word, steps as quiet as though she were simply floating away. These halls were so bright, sunlight pouring in from the windows and balconies. A stark contrast to her home that seemed to be shrouded in only darkness.
A bit uncomfortable.
"Well, isn't this a surprise."
He always seemed to appear out of thin air. A part of his charm, in her opinion.
A dazzling smile blossomed across her face, crimson irises alight with delight. Lucia practically threw herself into his arms, all gracefulness and poise that a princess should uphold completely gone. "I found you!"
Nokto chuckled, catching the dainty woman with ease. "I believe I was the one who found you, albeit without intent." Work had been draining, boring. Paperwork and the stench of other men was fully replaced by her sweet fragrance, a special blend of herbs that was utterly her. "It's lovely to see you again, Princess Lucia."
"Formality doesn't suit you," Lucia replied, rising up on her tiptoes to steal the first of many kisses to be exchanged. Calling her princess when they were about to engage in such indecent behavior for royalty. Princesses were meant to be virtuous.
Lucia so hated to be pinned down by such labels and expectations.
No one batted an eye at a prince's behavior with women, but god forbid a princess have dirty desires and wish to indulge in physical pleasure.
"Then I'll dispense with it." Nokto caught her chin with the crook of his finger, a dashing smile on his lips. He loved all women and their soft skin, sweet voices. But Lucia was a kindred soul, and it was otherworldly in bed with her... or wherever else they found themselves alone.
The nearest room gave the two privacy enough. Lips mashing together in heated kisses. Clothes removed only as necessary. Nokto lifted her onto the desk of the unused guest quarters, slender fingers already picking her corset loose to free her breasts.
"Still as exquisite as the first time I saw them. You truly are a marvel to behold," he said, hands occupied with the soft mounds.
Lucia licked her lips, withholding her voice from slipping out too loudly. "Do you speak to all your lovers with such honeyed words?" Her own hands occupied by the stubborn belt that took some effort to undo. When she succeeded, her gaze rose to his. "I'm well aware of how beautiful I am. The princess of Obsidian can't be anything less than ethereal."
Her family had a history of being as exquisitely beautiful as they were cruel.
"Is the Princess of Obsidian also meant to be so unchaste?"
It wasn't an insult. Nokto teased with his words as much as he did with his body. Lucia had been the one to approach him, to start their little arrangement.
"I can do as I please. And that includes this." Her eyes never left his as her dainty fingers wrapped around his hard cock, gently working her hand up and down his shaft.
Nokto let out a sexy, breathy moan at her touch. Ah, women could truly bring all men to their knees without needing a weapon. He scrunched her dress up with haste, removing all the obstacles in his way to bare her pussy.
A battle, almost. His fingers finding her wet pussy and pumping into her with skilled motion. Her hand caressing his cock. Heat building up within both. Their lips meeting again and again between deep breaths and shaky moans.
Lucia was the first to break. Her body desperately needed more than his fingers were giving her. She could certainly have reached that heavenly orgasm from his menstruation. Nokto was incredibly skilled with his hands.
"I need you inside me-"
It hardly needed saying. The seventh prince wanted to bury himself deep in her waiting pussy just as badly. Nokto obliged without wasting a moment. His tip rubbed up her slit to gather her juices before pushing into her warm walls.
Her head hit the desk with a dull thud, eyes rolling back as he stretched her open. This was it. This was the feeling that she fiercely needed. Being a captive in her own home left her with little to no access to a man willing to defile a princess in such a way. Far too much time had passed since her sexual desires had been fulfilled.
"You're truly a goddess, Lucia." Nokto thrust into her, hard enough to be pleasurable with how needy they both were, but not so rapid that he'd reach his end before he'd thoroughly had her.
There was no other sound quite as lovely as her voice. It was a melody that no one else could come close to replicating. He slept with plenty of women, but none the beautiful songbird that the Princess of Obsidian was.
Her fingers interlaced with his, and Nokto brought her dainty hand up to his lips to pepper kisses across her knuckles. Even halfway clad in her expensive dress, she was a sight to behold. Breasts bouncing with every thrust.
Lucia could finally let go. Nothing felt quite as good as giving herself over to him to bring her immense pleasure. Her legs quivered. Body sticky with sweat. Lips parted to allow out the most sinful moans when he rubbed her clit to send her spiraling over the edge.
They were careful when it came to Nokto's high. It was possible an entire war could break out over a pregnancy between her and him.
His seed coated her thighs, hand rubbing it out when he couldn't hold it anymore.
Nokto dipped his head into the crook of her neck, tongue tasting her salty skin. He would love to leave a mark but resisted. It would be quite noticeable on her pale skin.
"I'm not sure how many days that Gilbert intends to stay, but it won't be enough." Lucia sighed, still reeling from her orgasm. His gentle touch only prolonged her state. Returning home meant nights alone and no one to share in such pleasure.
"Perhaps I'll look into a way to extend your visit."
The princess let out a soft laugh, fingers running through his velvety silver locks. It wasn't as though she held any true affection for him. It was purely sexual, physical.
Except in these final moments.
Once the high had ceased, and there was no reason to hold onto the other. The exchange of their bodies complete. Normally, a pair would have separated, perhaps teased a little kiss before going their own way.
Lucia and Nokto grasping at every second to touch each other a little longer. As two lovers deeply in love would.
The seconds passed painfully quick. Soon, they would part as though it hadn't happened. Intent on forgetting all but the pleasure that they gave each other.
As it had to be between warring kingdoms.

hi! i was thinking about some things a lot of english speakers i know do, sometimes me, and wondering if there were similar -- but not equivalent -- things in spanish. like, how when a lot of us speak aloud, we drop the "g" on words that end with "-ing" ("talkin," "thinkin," etc.). or how when we say "kitten" or "rotten" a lot of us say it like "kih-in" or "rah-in", dropping the t. do those make you think of anything similar in spanish? (could be dropping letters, could be common ways of casual speaking that if u're just learning spanish from formal sources u might not learn, etc. ik it's kind of a broad question -- just wondering about an example or two that come to mind, ik a full answer could and probably has taken up books. and i'm sure it probably varies by country and/or region, too)
Oh it's super common in Spanish in different ways
There are syllables that get "swallowed" all the time
Some examples:
estar in present tense turning to ta; like ta llorando is está llorando "he/she is crying"... practically any time you see the -ing in English replaced as -in' you see toy/tás/tá/tán/tamos + verb in progressive as a kind of approximation
dónde turning into on; combining with estar you get onta or ontas like "where is it?" or "where are you?" [¿dónde estás? -> ¿ontas? in other words]
todo el día "all day" -> tol día
para -> pa [sometimes pa' to let you know it was para] para nada "not at all" -> pa ná
There's a joke in Spanish about pa él "for him" and pa'ella "for her" OR "paella"
And practically any word ending in -ado or -ada can have the D suddenly disappear
So like está muy callado "he is very soft-spoken" or "he is very quiet" can come out as tá muy callao
The feminine form tends to omit the D sound and collapse or conflate the A sounds together, so está muy callada can kind of sound like tá muy callá
That's why para nada sometimes comes out like pa ná because without the D you have two A sounds together which just kind of become one A sound
I have also heard clarostá which is claro está so it comes out like "fo sho" or "fursure" or something instead of "for sure"
I know that in South America you sometimes hear eres "you are" come out more like eri. And there are times when es "it is" or "he/she is" comes out like é which is similar to Italian
And por is often shortened to po'. In Chile the expression po comes out like the Canadian "eh"... like you can just end a sentence with po for emphasis. I'm not totally sure if it's an abbreviated version of por supuesto "of course" or por cierto "by the way" or some other por expression, but po is very common
...
There is also baby talk which is a little different but a friend of mine likes to say pobue tigüe or pobre/pobue tigüecito which is "poor tiger"... kind of like "poow widdle tiger"?
R sounds in baby talk end up as ü or W-ish sounds; like if I were trying to baby talk grande I would write it as "guande"
Same friend also says aícara instead of ay caramba/ay carajo which I enjoy
...
Somewhat related but BUE- or GUE- or HUE- is often spoken as if it were W
I have heard/said/seen people say weno/a instead of bueno/a, or hearing abuelo/a as something closer to awelo/a, or el vuelo "flight" sounding like el welo
There is also a linguistic link to huevón "dumbass" to Chile's use of weón and its verb expressions with wear or wea
-
I'm sure there are linguists who study this kind of thing, especially with the internet there's all kinds of abbreviations and approximations and contractions of words
If anyone like native-speakers/linguists/whoever want to add anything or their own favorite examples please do I'm curious

Adrien's Fashion
WTF is he wearing?
You got the lab-coat-looking texture-less white jacket; the black T-shirt with 50 million color stripes on it (okay, his t shirt only has 5 color stripes on it, 3 random colors and two off black color stripes that are impossible to see); BLUE JEANS (to fair, I commit the same crime); and worst of all... RED-ORANGE SHOES!!! Adrian is supposed to be a fashion model, but he is dressed like a generic "teen boy" that is really into science kits, and he has the colir coordination of a clown.
Now, Adrien isn't the only fashion victim in this show (Dishonorable mentions: Marinette's ugly pink pants that make her outfit look like a worse version of her 2D outfit, Gabriel's candycane neck tie) but I think it really stands out for him as a problem.
Just like all the worst outfits in fiction, Adrien's design gives the view incorrect information about his characterization. Adrien is an abused rich kid that is so oppresed that he only recently stepped out his house... so why does he look like every other "teen boy" down the street?
Not only that, but Adrien's design weirdly dosen't fit in with the rest of his family members, which is strange because his abusive and controlling father should be picking his hand picking his outfit. Felix is wearing a vest, dress pants, and dress shoes. Nathile and the unnamed bodyguard are weaing formal business outfits. Adrien's dead momma is weaing a business outfit! It's like the character designers really wanted Adrien's family to all look the same EXCEPT Adrien?! If Adrien was walking around with them on the street, I don't think anyone would be able to tell that they are all supposed to be togather.
How I would fix it: Give Adrien a color inverted version of Felix's outfit, just like their mothers have a color swapped version of their own outfits. That way, Adrien actually fits in with the rest of his family, looks like the character he is supposed to be, and dosen't have to wear RED-ORANGE SHOES.

Reflection in Shadow Pond: Even Footing
Chapter 4 of my Boris POV story. This one is heading back in time to Marisa’s and Boris’ first meeting. Enjoy!
Havana, August 2003
Boris sipped his lemon water and wondered if his suit had been a mistake. He'd hoped to present himself formally as a possible to Dr. Casseras. Typically creating the impression of a formidable businessman was no problem, but doing so while sweat dripped down his face could be a challenge. The air conditioning would have to fail today of all days. Still it was too late to change now. As he wiped his brow with his handkerchief, he heard the sound of high heels approaching. He quickly stuffed the square back in his pocket.
Moments later a dark-haired woman was led out onto the shaded patio.
"Bienvenidas, Dr. Casseras." He extended his hand to his guest, relieved that it at least remained dry. The last thing he wanted was for this stunning woman's first impression of him to be sweaty palms. Not of course that he cared for personal reasons. He appreciated the woman's aesthetics, but from an amorous perspective she was as off limits as they came.
"English is fine, Mr. Kuester von Jurgens-Ratenicz. Sofern Sie es nicht bevorzugen, unterhalten wir uns auf Deutsch?" Boris blinked, momentarily nonplussed. It wasn't often people offered to switch to his birth language.
"No, English is a fair compromise. It puts us on a more even footing, no?" His smile, which various women had in the past called charming, didn't seem to have any effect on Dr. Casseras. Instead she raised a sardonic eyebrow.
"We are currently standing in your remote multi-million dollar mansion, which I presume is solely occupied by you and your servants. I'd say that stilts things slightly in your favor, wouldn't you?"
Again Boris felt himself somewhat at a loss. It wasn't that he hadn't intended to use his property to awe the doctor. It was a tactic he employed semi-regularly. He just wasn't used to being called on it.
"My apologies. I desired a private interview and this location was best suited to that purpose. You are, of course, under no obligation to stay." He was quite pleased by the nonchalance in his voice, as though this wasn't a critically important meeting for him. Dr. Casseras smiled thinly.
"I'll bear that in mind. Now, if you'd be so good as to tell me why I'm here?" She gracefully lowered herself into the chair across from him, causing Boris to mentally slapped himself. He hadn't offered her a seat. His mother would be rolling in her grave for such a lapse in manners.
He sat himself and gestured to the lemon iced water he'd had brought out for her. Dr. Casseras' smile became a fraction less sharp and she sipped her drink politely.
"I understand you plan to establish a genetic research facility. I wish to invest. Significantly." His words had the opposite effect than he'd hoped. Her lovely face didn't brighten in excitement. Instead it clouded with suspicion. She set her glass down on the table with a noticeable clink.
"How would you know that? I haven't even been able to gain a permit for the structure." Boris was well aware of the current obstacles in Dr. Casseras' path. Bureaucracies were universal entities. They flourished across the developed world, their red tape snaring every attempt at progress. Fortunately green (or whatever shade the native currency was) trumped red every time.
"You will, shortly. As for donors, you'll find they work a bit like lemmings. Once one jumps, the rest tend to follow." Every nation's upper echelon seem to share a universal fear of being first or last to the party. God forbid one of them struck out on their own and thought for themselves.
"And you would be the first lemming in this scenario?" Boris fought the urge to grimace. It was his own fault. He had introduced the metaphor after all.
"Officially, no. My donorship would be completely anonymous. I can, however, help you find an appropriate benefactor that will cause others to open their wallets." There were always ways to influence the wealthy. Boris would be only too happy to lend his powers of persuasion to this enterprise.
"Why would you do that?"
A fair question. Many men in his position would consider her too young and inexperienced for such an undertaking. Others might be hesitant because of her beauty. Males less enlightened than he frequently had trouble crediting gorgeous women with a surfeit of intelligence. There was a pervasive belief that they had somehow used their attractiveness to attain their credentials.
That wasn't to say some women hadn't learned to turn to those assumptions to their own advantage, but it didn't appear Dr. Casseras was one of them. The way she was interacting with him demonstrated that all too clearly. Her attitude from the beginning of this conversation had been far from flirtatious. Rather it had been suspicious, almost adversarial. An intriguing demeanor to take, given that he had the power to make her professional dreams a reality.
"Your work is the most promising I've come across, or so that experts I've consulted tell me. Your paper on quantitative genetic inheritance was particularly inspired."
Dr. Casseras eyes narrowed at him, as Boris had expected them to. That last sentence had been intended to rile her a bit further. He couldn't quite put his finger on why, but there was something about this woman that made him want to poke the bear.
"I was only a research assistant for that study, Mr. Kuester von Jurgens-Ratenicz."
Her voice had gone colder than the ice in her glass. She was not at all pleased he'd uncovered her true role. Her ire, for some perverse reason, made him want to chuckle. He didn't of course, but it was a near thing.
"Boris, please. I appreciate your loyalty to your former employer, but we both know you were the assistant in title only. I'm compelled to ask: Doesn't it chafe to have him take the credit for your hard work?"
In this matter he was truly curious. The custodial staff member his investigators had found had only been able to report on who had truly been working around the clock for 6 months and who had been out spending his days drinking in local bars. They hadn't been able to offer much insight on the interpersonal dynamics of the scientists.
Why had she lied? Had she possessed affection or pity for the older scientist and chosen to allow him the accolades to bolster his flagging career? Or had she needed the weight his name would bring the paper in order for it to be given the consideration it deserved. Had her employer promised her greater credit and then reneged on his end of the deal? Whichever it was, the expression on Dr. Casseras' face meant he was destined not to know.
"Well, Boris, I see no reason to answer your question, since you won't answer mine." Boris raised his eyebrows at the accusation.
"I thought I had."
"No. I meant what your interest was in anonymously funding my genetic research, not why you feel I'm qualified to do it." An interesting inquiry to make. Generally speaking those hoping to use his capital merely asked "how much?" and "where do I sign?" Dr. Casseras, it appeared, was more thorough.
"When one inherits the kind of wealth that I have, one is obliged to invest a portion into worthy endeavors. I believe this to be a worthy endeavor." Not an outright lie, just a slight obfuscation. After all, his personal affairs wouldn't impact her work in any way. She surely wasn't expecting more from him than that.
"Goodbye, Mr. Kuester von Jurgens-Ratenicz." Dr. Casseras rose swiftly and headed out the way she came. Boris was so stunned he sat there, gaping like a fish, for a full five seconds. She had walked out on him. He was here to offer her life's ambitions decades before she had a hope of attaining them herself and she had walked out on him.
Recovering himself, he stood and started briskly walking to catch up. Luckily for him his legs were longer and she was in high heels. He fell into step with her as she reached the top of the driveway.
"Pardon me, Dr. Casseras, have I offended you in some way?" The look the doctor sent him was scathing.
"Yes. Lying offends me. Your presumption that I'll be so blinded by your "generosity" that I won't question its true purpose offends me." Now Boris' turn to be affronted.
"I have not lied to you." Withholding was not the same thing as lying. Boris considered himself an honest man. He took pride in dealing fairly with people and it was his intention to do the same with this woman. She had no right to insult him.
Dr. Casseras stopped walking and pivoted to face him.
"Wealthy German aristocrats do not randomly pick genetic research as their pet charity. Even if they did, they wouldn't seek out an obscure scientist in an embargoed country to sponsor.
You've obviously dug into my life, shall I share what I found when I dug into yours?" Boris felt a knot growing in his stomach. Somehow it hadn't occurred to him that Dr. Casseras would have the resources to uncover anything of interest. It wasn't as if she had a team of private investigators working for her as he had.
"By all means."
"Three generations of accidental deaths of the men in your family all around the same age. Quite the coincidence." She knew. All the care their dynasty had put into hiding this weakness from the world and this woman had pieced it together within 48 hours.
"My, the internet is a wonderful thing." The world was shrinking as technology was growing. Soon privacy would go the way of the dinosaur.
"What's the matter? You don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot?" Dr. Casseras' hands were perched in her hips, looking for all the world like a scolding wife. He was torn between admiring her flashing eyes and losing his own temper. He had not done anything worthy of admonishment and yet in the course of five minutes this woman had called him a liar, and now a hypocrite.
"I fail to see how any personal interest I may or may not have should affect your willingness to accept my offer." He couldn't believe the turn this conversation had taken. Never in his life had he had to work so hard to get someone to take his money.
"It is relevant because I believe that gift horses should be looked in the mouth. If the Trojans had, then their story would have ended differently. I think you choose me because you think I'm someone you can manipulate. Someone from a poor island nation desperate enough to run your own personal laboratory and ask no questions. Well, you're wrong." Dr. Casseras spun and began her march toward his car. He hadn't anticipated when he'd told her she could leave at any time she would take him up on the offer. The more fool he. He had to stop her. She represented his best hope for survival. If that meant he had to humble himself, so be it.
"Dr. Casseras, wait. Please." Boris couldn't remember the last time he'd used 'Please' as anything other than a formal pleasantry. Saying it in such an imploring tone revealed a weakness he wasn't completely comfortable with, but it was enough to make the doctor halt. She turned, arms crossed over her chest in a manner that temporarily redirected his gaze. Mortified, he quickly drew his eyes back up to her expectant face, praying she hadn't noticed.
"You are quite right. I have not been entirely forthcoming regarding my motivations. Yes, as you have accurately deduced, I have reason to suspect my own genetics are, shall we say, faulty. You are wrong, however, in thinking I selected you for any reason apart from my belief in your abilities and work ethic. I have no intention of installing you at the head of this project only to seize control at some later point. I believe your interests and mine align and that together, we can achieve some truly great things."
Boris could feel Dr. Casseras' penetrating stare, as if she was peering through his bespoke suit and directly into soul. It was an unnerving experience to say the least, but when she finished she smiled at him. Unlike earlier her offerings it was genuine and reached all the way up to her eyes. He'd thought she was beautiful before, but like this she was…transcendent.
"Marisa." This time it was she who offered her slender fingers to him. "If we are to be working together, and you insist on 'Boris', then it would only be fair if we both dropped the formal address. Even footing, yes?"
He managed to pull himself together enough to close the distance and take her offered limb. Boris fought the overwhelming urge to bring her soft hand to his lips.
"Even footing." Even as he said the words, he questioned their truthfulness. Rare was the interaction when the upper hand was not his. At this moment however, staring into this woman's eyes, he felt himself on decidedly slanted ground.

The Dave Benton Interview: Catching up with The MadTown Man by Eric Eggleson
If you haven’t heard of Dave Benton, then you didn’t grow up in the Midwest, or Madison specifically. I “lived” at his record store and saw one of his former bands, Spooner, too many times to count. But when I found out he was in a new band, the ghost particles, I had to check them out. And am I ever glad I did. They are a supergroup of sorts if you’re familiar with the Madison music scene (Ex-Spooner, Fire Town, The Rousers, First Person). What’s even better is I got to see them perform at one of their few and far between shows in Madison this summer. I contacted Dave to see if he was up for a Dagger interview and here’s what he had to say.
Have you lived in Madison your entire life?  I originally lived in New Jersey; my family moved to Omaha, NE when I was 11. I attended U of Nebraska for one year and then transferred to a smaller state college, Wayne State in the small town of Wayne, Nebraska. (Not affiliated with Wayne State University in Detroit). It was there that I first met Doug “Duke” Erikson. After college I moved to Madison in 1972.
When did you begin your musical career?  I was 15 when I formed a band with friends.  While in Nebraska I played with five different Rock bands over the thirteen years. It was all good fun and preparation for the next level.
What musical training do you have?  No formal training.
Anybody help your training?  Just friends, sharing chords. I discovered from the outset that I could play by ear and copy melodies from records.
Tumblr media
When did you feel that you “made it” in the field? Why?  After many years, our band Spooner was signed by Chameleon Records in 1989, with distribution by EMD, then WEA, and finally Roadrunner. It was the only time I made any real money.
Are you still involved with MadCity Music (record store)?  I sold the business in 2007, and it’s still going strong to this day.
Who influenced you the most in your musical career?  My dad was a big Jazz fan and would often bring records home. I’ve lived through all the eras of Rock ‘n Roll, and I was knocked out by Eddie Cochran when I was young. The biggest influences were The Beatles and all the ‘60s Garage bands.
How did the ghost particles come about?  In the fall of 2019, Joel Tappero mentioned to me that he was starting to work on some songs with Phil Davis. I told them I was interested, and we started to get things going. Then the pandemic hit that winter, so we switched gears, and all got the same Multi-Track software. Since we could no longer get together, we began recording via file-sharing. Don came on board fall of 2020. Jeremy Tappero did all the mixing and drums at his studio in Bloomington, MN. He currently plays bass with Soul Asylum. Lee Laski started as our new drummer in 2022, shortly after the first album was released in May of that year.
Tumblr media
Loved seeing you perform live. You played some new songs, what's the target date for that release?  We are just starting to record another new song. The target is to get the album out in 2024 sometime. There will probably be vinyl on this one.
On Bandcamp it states, "Tracy Benton, bodhran on ‘Three Things,’" any relation? Sister.
Tell me more about The Waterdogs. Not familiar with them. Are they still a band?  The Waterdogs were an instrumental Rock band active from 1984 to 2017. The other members were Lee Laski, Ernie Conner, John Hauser, and Don Irwin. Lee, Ernie, and Don were also playing with roots rockin’ The Rousers all that time. John Hauser came from Paul Black’s band. There were two Waterdogs albums, Live from 1986 (cassette only) and Thermal from 2000 (CD only). There was also a 7” single, “Hawaii 5-0/Theme From Spydog” in 1988.
Any suggestions for new bands breaking into the business?  Just do what you love and maybe something will happen. Team up with a good songwriter and be there to lend your talents and serve their songs. And let go of your ego.
Favorite tour?  Spooner was the only band that really toured, mainly in a ten-state area. We played as far west as Lawrence, KS, and east to NYC, where we played the Peppermint Lounge, and Metropole in Pittsburgh as well. All the rest of my bands were more regional.
I used go to Merlyn's both nights when you played a weekend. However; the first time I saw you, you opened for The Cretones (my first visit to Merlyn's as well). What were some of your favorite Spooner moments?  The Merlyn’s gigs were usually special. There were some clubs we played fairly regularly where our following was sizable, Teddy’s in Milwaukee (now Shank Hall), The B&B in Oshkosh, Lefty’s in Green Bay, Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, IL, and Tut’s in Chicago. We did a lot of openers. A few that stood out were Marshall Crenshaw in DeKalb, IL and Bloomington, IN; Question Mark &The Mysterians at Tut’s, The Police at Headliners in Madison, and Joe Ely at Fitzgerald’s. The shows on the UW campus were always great too, Great Hall and The Terrace.
What’s your favorite song to perform live? Why?  For the ghost particles it would be “All The Love.”
Beautiful song with a kick! How did that song come about?  Well, you’d have to ask Phil about any initial inspiration. He sent us the file of the basic structure and we all put it together. I played the fuzz guitar parts and the synth strings as well because Don wasn’t yet with us at that time. I also used an EBow on the break. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXLlReHDkiE&t=9s
What’s your favorite cover of another band?  Maybe “Mr. Tambourine Man,” because it’s so recent with ghost particles, or “Roadrunner “ (Modern Lovers), which Spooner did.
Tumblr media
You did a great version of "Tambourine Man." Loved Spooner's version of "Roadrunner" as well. Did you see Jonathan Richman when he played Merlyn's?  I did see JR at Merlyn’s, and at O’Cayz as well.
Favorite venue to perform at?  Merlyn’s in Madison, 1979 to 1983.
Who would you like to work with if you could?  I’d like to work with Duke Erikson again. We were working on recording some songs for which he wrote the music, and I wrote the lyrics, about six years ago. He became very busy with Garbage again.
Would love to hear those songs! I’m hoping it will happen. What type of music?  All Pop/Rock songs, more like Spooner.
When writing a song, what comes first, lyrics or melody?  I’m not really a prolific songwriter. With my long-running instrumental band The Waterdogs, I wrote everything on guitar, of course, and it was primarily lyrics with Spooner.
If you could switch to any other type of music, what would it be? Why?  I love Reggae and the rhythmic possibilities, but that ain’t gonna happen.
Any new bands you like or would recommend?  I listen to tons of music, both new and old. I think The National are great.
Top Ten desert island discs? (10 albums you couldn’t live without.)  That’s a tough one, but here are some favorites off the top of my head. Love Forever Changes; Roxy Music (1st album); The National Boxer and High Violet;  Jackson Browne For Everyman; The Jayhawks Sound Of Lies and Smile; Beach Boys All Summer Long; Hawkwind Warrior On The Edge Of Time; Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. Just the tip of my big iceberg there.
Finish this sentence: I want to be remembered for…being fair and kind, and being a solid Garage-level guitarist. I hope you’ve learned a little more about Dave and why I think he’s a legend in the Madison music scene. You can see why I wanted to jump at the chance to learn more about him and his music. Be sure to check out his music below.

Because there’s a surprise waiting for you! As soon as you walk onstage, someone will approach and ask if you would like to participate in their research project.
