Cathay was born and enslaved in 1850 in Jackson County, Missouri. In September 1861 Union troops impressed Cathay and she joined the Army to work as a cook and washerwoman for Union Army officers. On November 15th, 1866 Williams disguised herself as a man and enlisted as William Cathey, serving in Company A of the 38th Infantry, a newly-formed all-black U.S. Army Regiment, one of its earliest recruits.

Cathay initially served at Jefferson Barracks outside St. Louis and was later posted at Fort Cummings and Fort Bayard in New Mexico Territory. Like other black soldiers stationed, she endured inadequate supplies and inferior weapons. Cathay concealed her femininity for two years despite numerous Army hospital visits before her true gender was discovered by the Fort Bayard post surgeon. She was discharged at Fort Bayard on October 14, 1868 on a surgeon’s certificate of disability.

Cathay was hospitalized circa 1890 for over a year in Trinidad. In June 1891 she filed an invalid pension application based on medical disability incurred during military service as William Cathey. The Army rejected her pension claim on February 8, 1892, citing no grounds for a pensionable disability, but did not question her gender identity as William Cathay. The date of Cathay Williams’ death is unknown.

[Another Rise of the Runelords PC. Evangeline was, in some respects, one of the “main characters” of that game, at least through to the beginning of Book 4, because the subplot about saving her soul was a major pivot from the game as written to how it was played. By the time they got to the titular Fortress of the Stone Giants, things got a lot more focused on the written encounters. As such, I didn’t really have time to cover a bunch of stuff that was relevant to her journey, but not to her destination, such as her squire (and fellow PC), Jabber, a gnome sorcerer with a possessive edge and a tendency towards abusing enchantments on his allies, and her first cohort, a unicorn who disliked both Jabber and Orik Vancaskerkin because he thought Evangeline was too good for both of them. The other “main character”, the slightly sadistic Daisy Moonblossom, will be posted next week.]

Evangeline Dawnflower CR 18 NG Outsider (native) This woman has dark red hair, soft brown eyes and a look of serene calm about her. She is also clearly armed to the teeth, with a lance, sword and shield, clad in fine plate armor.

Evangeline Dawnflower is a woman transformed, having gone from human to tiefling to aasimar in the course of her life. Born to cruel nobles in the Tannessen family, Evangeline was sold in escrow to Hell, and the contract devil Jebelat served as her infernal godfather for much of her life. As soon as she was able, she fled Cheliax for Varisia, and was in Sandpoint just in time for the Swallowtail Festival attacked by goblins at the behest of Nualia, a cleric of Lamashtu. The duel between good tiefling and evil aasimar was resolved in favor of Evangeline, and she continued to fight for the forces of righteousness until slain by the lamia Xanesha. Her friends brought her back, but Jebalat was determined to collect her soul, and sent infernal assassins to finish the job. They succeeded in the short term, but failed in the long term; Evangeline’s soul was truly won, sponsored by Sarenrae and fought for by the giant goblin bard Neimand.This transformed her body, changing her from a tiefling to an aasimar.

After further exploits, up to and including dealing the killing blow to the Runelord Karzoug, Evangeline has settled into a sort of semi-retirement. She is married to Orik Vancaskerkin, who she let live at Thistletop and helped redeem over the course of several months before becoming romantically interested. She no longer considers herself a “knight” per se, but has certainly traveled throughout Varisia to see old friends and to make new ones, and is willing and able to defend Sandpoint should it come under attack once more.

Evangeline is a determined and defensive combatant. She is a cavalier, but one who is less concerned with heroic charges and more concerned with ensuring that her friends and loved ones are safe. Her caution is slightly challenged by her cohort, the daring sleipnir Bayard, who has heard many stories of Evangeline’s adventures and wants to take her riding off into glorious battle once more.

...Tintagel, immortalised in British mythology as the place of King Arthur’s conception, is one of a string of castles at risk of tumbling into the sea as climate change increases the pace of coastal erosion.

English Heritage has launched a fundraising appeal and identified its six most vulnerable castles, warning that some of England’s most beloved spots may be lost if nothing is done.

Rob Woodside, the director of estates at English Heritage, said: “Erosion along England’s coastline is nothing new but the rate of land loss that we have seen over the past few years is alarming. Rising sea levels and more regular storms pose a real risk to the future of many of our sites.”

Chunks of Tintagel have long fallen into the sea but parts of the cliff directly in front of the visitor centre have recently been lost to erosion, eating into a viewing area and coastal path.

Other sites at risk in the south-west of England include Bayard’s Cove Fort, built in Tudor times to protect Dartmouth in Devon. It is set on a terrace cut from the rocky riverbank, a beautiful location but one prone to flooding. English Heritage says work is urgently needed to investigate the impact of rising sea levels.

Off the Cornish coast, English Heritage is also concerned about the garrison walls in St Mary’s, the largest of the Isles of Scilly. They were built after the attack of the Armada in 1588 due to concerns that Spain would send a second fleet.

But the sea is now more of a threat than enemy forces, with the shape of the walls creating pinch points, or “armpits”, where the tide’s power is focused.

English Heritage is also concerned about Piel Castle in Cumbria, set on a low-lying island about half a mile from the coast in Morecambe Bay. Much of the island has already been lost and the castle’s keep is at risk.

Two castles in Hampshire are under threat. Calshot, built by Henry VIII, is considered at risk, with work needed on a spit and foreshore.

Part of Hurst Castle, also built by Henry VIII, collapsed days before planned work to stabilise the site in February last year, after the sea exposed and undercut its foundations. While stabilisation of the damaged section has taken place, the sea walls around the Tudor fort urgently need repairing and strengthening.

Woodside said: “The partial collapse of the east battery at Hurst Castle was a devastating reminder of the power of the sea and the risks our coastal heritage faces, but Hurst is not an isolated case.

“Hundreds of heritage sites in the UK and around the world are increasingly at risk. If these coastal properties are to survive the coming decades, we will need to strengthen their walls and build sea defences to protect them.”

Lieutenant Colonel Rev. Allen Allensworth (April 7, 1842 – September 14, 1914) was a chaplain, colonel, city founder, and theologian. Born enslaved in Kentucky, he escaped during the American Civil War by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers as a Union soldier. After being ordained as a Baptist minister, he worked as a teacher, led several churches, and was appointed as a chaplain in the Army. In 1886, he gained appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers in the West, becoming the first African American to reach the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in the Army for 20 years, retiring in 1906.

He was a prolific public speaker, embarking on a speaking tour to inspire African American youth. His lectures included Five Manly Virtues Exemplified, The Battle of Life and How to Fight It, and Character and How to Read It. While on tour in Pasadena, he met Professor William Payne. In 1908, he, Payne, and a small committee founded Allensworth, California, the first community established, financed, and governed entirely by African Americans. It continues to be restored and maintained as the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.

His family accompanied him on assignments in the West, ranging from Fort Bayard, Fort Supply, and Fort Harrison. Josephine Leavell, his wife, played the organ in the fort chapels.

In 1887, he was featured in Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive, and Rising.

In 1889, while at Fort Bayard, he published the pamphlet Outline of Course of Study, and The Rules Governing Post Schools of Ft. Bayard, N.M., which became a military education standard.

Sur mon épaule, dans le train aller.

Dans la cour des garages, je le vois attendre que ma mère se gare. Je le vois dans la cour des garages, là, ça n’a aucun sens. Lui, ici. Pareil dans l’appartement. Pareil partout, je me retourne, je le vois dans cet environnement familier où jamais je n’aurais pensé le voir.

Ils ont toujours mon livre à l’Odeur du temps. On rejoint ma sœur pour manger devant l’Opéra. Elle vient avec nous le soir pour une soirée drag au Boum. Les shows sont nuls, la musique est bien. Ils boivent des pastis. Devant le Boum les queers fument des clopes ou s’asseyent sur les marches des immeubles. Le gars, en peignoir de bain rose avec presque rien en dessous en train de fumer sa vogue. Dans cette même rue on passait vite avec les copines pour aller au Baby, la boîte pas loin. On avait peur. Mes copines se faisaient siffler. Avec ma sœur et Guillermo on finit au Pulse, rempli de vieux pédés.

Terrasse à Callelongue. Un enfant avec sa mère. Allemands. Guillermo dit il me fait penser à toi enfant. Je lui jette un regard. L’enfant sourit. Je lui souris aussi. Son sourire s’agrandit, encore, encore. Un pédé en devenir.

Il lit Édouard Louis, dans le train retour. Pose sa tête sur mon épaule. Je lis Pierre Bayard en écoutant Madredeus. Il dit être chez toi c’était comme une vision paradisiaque. Ta mère qui fait beaucoup à manger, le parquet ensoleillé, toi au piano et ton cousin qui chante avec toi. Je lui demande si ça l’a déprimé, il dit que non, au contraire, que ça lui a fait beaucoup de bien. Il s’excuse d’avoir été aussi irritable pendant le séjour, je m’excuse d’avoir pris autant d’espace par la parole. Mais je voulais tout expliquer, tout dire de cette ville hors norme. C’est dans ce trajet retour qu’on s’est retrouvés, qu’on a parlé librement après ces deux ou trois jours d’une certaine tension. Les voyageurs autour n’existaient pas. Il faisait le con, puis il m’embrassait. On a fini le voyage l’un sur l’autre, en lisant.

L’autre jour, il a montré la pile de livres sur sa table de chevet, et il a dit tout ça, tout ça c’est toi.
