you know that braindead-ass cold take that stupid weeaboos keep repeating about how evangelion is actually not a mecha show it's actually a show about psychology that just kinda features mecha?

FX's Marvel's LEGION (2017-2019) is actually that but for superheroes.

maybe that's why the eva take pisses me off so much. my previous all-time favourite TV show before I watched eva is actually genuinely a show about psychology using the signifiers of a popular action genre for spice and context.

legion is a show aimed at adults that actually spends a fair amount of time on edutainment segments explaining psychological concepts.

eva definitely interrogates the psychology of its characters but most of the psych lingo is just aesthetic just like the christian stuff.

they're both incredible fucking shows to be clear, but they are not the same, not even remotely.

the psychology stuff is basically completely dropped in all subsequent evangelion material, including end of eva. clearly it's not actually the essence of the show.

the christian stuff is actually a way bigger part of evangelion's identity than the psychology stuff ever was.

If you want someone to calmly listen to you while you question their entire reality, maybe don't trap them, confine them, and threaten them with literal death if they don't do what you say???

I get it. He's got God-level power, and he's destined to destroy the world. But how in the hell did anyone expect David, a traumatized and mentally ill, over-powered psychic, to react any different to that very aggressive intervention?? He was always going to see it as a betrayal, and he was always going to run.

But if Syd has just calmly talked to him alone? If she had told him that she was concerned about his mental health, and started with just a suggestion of therapy?? I really do think that would have gone so much better. Not to say he would have been guaranteed to accept what she was saying or agree to treatment, but he would've been a helluva lot more receptive to the idea if he hadn't been back into a corner and verbally attacked--and, I really cannot stress this enough, threatened with literal death if he didn't comply.

i love characters with deep gravelly voices or strong proud noses. i love characters with messy curls, wide-set downturned eyes, and clumsy slow walking gaits. i love characters who’s clothes always seem to be expensive but dirty; who’s skin is marked with sunburn and scars and freckles and acne and windburn. i love characters that are tall and angular or short and round. i love characters that have cupid’s bows, and oval faces and long calloused fingers. i love characters that always wear a good pair of bright red gloves or that one odd patchwork hat. i love characters that have crooked yellow-ish teeth, but who have the best smile. i love it when characters have actual distinct physical traits instead of just being as conventionally attractive as possible.
