Till‘s Jalyn Hall will play another important historical figure after booking a guest-starring role playing the young Martin Luther King Jr in Genius: MLK/X, the upcoming fourth installment in the Disney+/National Geographic anthology series.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays the adult Martin Luther King Jr. in the series, which will focus on the relationship between Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X (Aaron Pierre). The anthology will also include Weruche Opia as Coretta Scott King, Jayme Lawson as Betty Shabazz and Ron Cephas Jones as Elijah Muhammad.

The first installment will stream as a Disney+ original. Channing Godfrey Peoples serves as co-executive producer and directs the pilot episode from a script by Jeff Stetson.

Written and recorded for the streaming series “Genius: MLK/X,” “Home” features Giddens’ voice, Francesco Turrisi’s piano and a background choir on this paean to the slain Civil Rights leaders.

Glory/glory/glory/I am home, Giddens sings.

Sparse and coming in at under three minutes, “Home” is nevertheless exceptionally powerful and says everything it needs to say.

Deadline’s Contenders Television, the event where stars and showrunners talk up their shows ahead of Emmy voting, has unveiled its lineup.

The event kicks off on Saturday April 13 and runs through Sunday April 14 at the Directors Guild of America in LA. There will also be a virtual livestream of the event. Full details of the event and an RSVP link can be found here.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7) will star as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) as Malcolm X, Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You) as Coretta Scott King, and Jayme Lawson (The Batman) as Betty Shabazz. Channing Godfrey Peoples (Miss Juneteenth) will direct the pilot episode and will serve as co-executive producer on Genius: MLK/X. 

Disney+ and National Geographic have set the lead cast for Genius: MLK/X.  , the first installment of Nat Geo’s series to stream as a Disney+ original, will explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Pierre).  With their formidable wives, Coretta Scott King (Opia) and Betty Shabazz (Lawson), by their sides, King and Malcolm X became synonymous with the civil rights era and the fight for racial and economic justice.

Several historians and experts had come on board as production consultants prior to the start of the writers room to guide the narrative.
