How many works do you have on AO3?

2. What's you total AO3 count?

601,330 which is weirdly way more than I expected but also way less? How dare AO3 not count all the words I've never posted, this is homophobia

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I got my start in the Devil Wears Prada and Harry Potter fandoms, and then the supercorp gifs pulled a bag over my head, tossed me in a van, and made me hyperfixate on a really bad but really gay show, so. I've also written for Xena Warrior Princess and ATLA/ATLOK, but I've never posted for those. There is an errant OUAT SwanQueen one-shot out there, courtesy of some insane people I love.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

In order, they’re Perhaps, For the Better, Perfect, The Date and, surprisingly, The Wrong Way. I didn't expect that last one at all, to be honest.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do appreciate every single one (they’re a writer's main source of nourishment) but I am terrible at responding to each and every one. There will be times where I'll go on comment-replying marathon and then I forget about it for like, a year. My bad! I do love all the comments and I re-read them all the time when I'm feeling kind of shit. They bring so much joy to my heart and occasional (happy) tears to my eyes.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Probably Unshackled, but I'm not sure if that counts because the happy ending came in part two. But for the people who didn't know there was a part two… that was probably the angstiest I've managed! I love angst, but I have to have the happy ending, whether I'm reading or writing it.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oof, I don't know. I try to have happy endings to most things. I think the one that jumps to mind is i don't know how to dance so slow (to keep up with you). I don't think it's necessarily the happiest ending, it's just this whole fic plays in my head so clearly, almost like it's a movie, and it just gives me the good feels. It's short and sweet, and it makes me happy.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I think if I wrote more I'd get some lol. I used to get some trolls here and there, especially flames back on FanFiction.net. A couple on Perhaps, but the Cissamione peeps were awesome helping me deal with them. Nowadays everything's pretty chill.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Not to mention all the stuff I don't post. Smut has to be just right to make the cut. Nothing too crazy, but ya know I have to sprinkle some praise kink in there.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Nope, and I don't think I ever will. The most I've done is borrow other characters from within the same universe (see Luthor Motor Racing AU), usually as a joke/easter egg. I'm usually not a fan or crossovers (writing or reading), but there are a handful of exceptions here and there.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

HAHA yeah. A couple of times. Usually found on Wattpad, or translated into Portuguese and posted to some Brazilian site without my permission. Side note, why is it always Brazilians. I'M ONE OF YOU, PLS

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah! To Russian, French and Mandarin (with permission) and Portuguese (without), at least as far as I know. I'm totally cool with translations, just like. Ask me first, give me the credit for the original work, and send me a link! I love to see translations of my stuff, especially if it's in a language I can speak.

13. have you ever cowritten a fic before?

@shadowdianne and I had some incredible back-and-forth a few years back, but it never really went anywhere (although I maintain our ideas were FIRE). It was a frankly amazing take on Narcissa as a character, with some sprinkle of a Narlily friendship and Cissamione endgame. We both had other stuff going on, so it never really developed further, but I still have the docs with all of our ideas and frankly hilarious commentary.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Don't make me pick just one, I can't.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

At this point, all of them I think? Brain's just not braining that way.

16. What are your writing strengths?

It used to be world-building and environment descriptions, but to be honest I haven't flexed those writing muscles in ages. I think I can tell a lot with not much real-estate. I also think my readers/fellow writers would be better at answering this one lol

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

The writing part.

Jokes aside, it's actually stringing a plot together. I write by vibes.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I technically speak four languages, but I always worry whether whatever foreign language dialogue I insert sounds genuine enough to sound like a native speaker, so I always ask for a second (and a third and fourth) opinion anyway.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Harry Potter, on a little known (to Americans) social media platform known as Orkut, and then on FFNet. Then I deleted all traces of that and had a fresh start with Devil Wears Prada.

20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

It's like asking me about my favourite child. Right now it's while all of the lines are blurring, which is a WIP but I just have. SO MUCH. To add to it. AND  I DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR BRAIN CAPACITY but I. Love that plot in my brain. Maybe one day.

Living with Losing You - 9/19/2022

Grief is a bitch.

But not actually. It’s truly just displaced love that will never find a home. To grieve is a beautifully tragic phenomenon. It is the purest emotion to show how much you truly loved and cared about someone. I’ll get into why I started my blog with this later on. 

This morning I finally woke up feeling like I had gotten decent sleep AKA more than 4-5 hours like I had been the last 4 nights. I quickly got dressed, and then dropped off Sadie at camp for the day. I needed to go into the office, so I wanted to make sure she as not bored at home. Plus, she primarily hung out at home yesterday with all the storage fiascos. After I dropped her off, I quickly ran to PS to grab breakfast before starting my back to back work meetings this morning. After those meetings, I packed up my things and drove to our Mission Valley location. I like going into work every so often / as needed. It gives for a nice change of pace, and it’s always great to see my coworkers. 

After working and getting things done in the office, I realized I was cutting it close for practice. I still needed to go home and change too. So, I took my last meeting of the day in my car and headed home to change before heading to the high school. Today’s practice was mile repeats. The boys did pretty well, I was impressed with their ability to stick with it. The main critique I had was I kept telling them to “hug lane one” (if you know you know) and they insisted to continue to run their repeats in lane 2-3. I mean, if they want to run extra that’s fine by me. Between the warm up, workout, and cool down, they all did somewhere between 7-9 miles total. Luckily it was not too hot today, so we did not have to worry about heat warnings or anything like that. I had a pretty good run myself (but actually not really). My first mile was pretty quick, and then I just got super tired out after it. I need to be better about pacing, I just get very excited when I run and it can be hard to tone that down at times. I will get my fitness back though. I know I have to give myself grace. 

After practice I quickly ran to get Sadie, and then we picked up In-n-Out for dinner. I forgot to mention this earlier, but while I was at work I did eat, and had ordered a salad. i realize I definitely have an eating out problem, but I also hate cooking, am too busy to have the patience for it, and enjoy efficiency. I want to look into HelloFresh or some kind of meal prep box. It would save me money and the meals seem fairly simple. Which I like. 

Anyway, when I got home I fed Sadie and then fed myself (lol). I am really not sure why, but my depression has gotten pretty bad the last couple of days. Well, maybe I do know why, it was very triggering to go to the storage unit and start to organize, prep donations, prep what I am selling, etc. It’s been all so much to emotionally take on. 

I had one of the worst breakdowns I have had since you died. This blog is all about being honest and vulnerable, so I will be. I want to reiterate that I do see hope, and that I do know there is so much that God wants to use mw for in this life. But, this does not mean that the depression doesn’t creep in and make you feel like you want to die. Especially when someone who you loved more than anything died. This panic attack included intense breathing, hyperventilating, lightheadedness, lots of tears, etc. It was very hard to get out of it. I had to use sensory and talk to myself to get out of it. I am just so anxious. I can’t even imagine what you felt like. 

I really need to get some sleep, I have a webinar at 7am that I have to help run, among all the other meetings that I had to move from Wednesday to tomorrow that I need to prep for. Even just remembered that I forgot to send an email to the team. Oh well. See - it’s those things in life where it truly doesn’t matter. I am not going to worry about it until I log on. 

I love you so much, James. This pain is the worst pain that I have ever felt in my entire life, and again, my mom left me at a young age. And then left me again when I was 18. It’s been hard for both myself and those around me to understand that reflecting and moving forward can coexist. Being happy while also being sad can coexist as well #mysecretdepression But hey, it’s not a secret anymore because I am #breakingthestigma

Both of the animals are sleeping on either bottom side the bed. I miss the days when we would all just hang out together and lounge on the couch, watch a movie, build legos while they tried to play with the pieces, etc. 

So many memories keep you alive in my heart. 

We will all be reunited again, one day.

10 TIPS FOR PITCHING YOUR NOVEL

A great pitch is like a poem.  Every word counts.

Make us fall in love with your hero.  Whether you’re writing a novel or memoir, you have to make us root for your flawed but lovable hero.

Make us hate your villain.  Show us someone unique and dastardly whom we can’t wait to hiss at.

Just because your kids love to hear your story at bedtime doesn’t mean you’re automatically qualified to get a publishing deal. So make sure not to include this information in your pitch.

If you have any particular expertise that relates to your novel, tell us. Establishing your credentials will help us trust you.

Your pitch is your audition to show us what a brilliant writer you are, so it has to be the very best of your writing.

Don’t make your pitch a book report.  Make it sing and soar and amaze.

A pitch is like a movie trailer.  You start with an incredibly exciting/funny/sexy/romantic/etc. close-up with intense specificity, then you pull back to show the big picture and tell us the themes and broad strokes that build to a climax.

Leave us with a cliffhanger.  The ideal reaction to a pitch is, “Oh my God, what happens next?”

Show us what’s unique, exciting, valuable, awesome, unexpected, about your project, and why it’s comfortable, familiar and proven.

sebelumnya aku gak tau gimana ngepost di Tumblr yg bener soalnya pas pencet button 'write' gak ada opsi jenis atau bentuk tulisan kayak dulu. kalo dulu kan ada pilihan kayak as article, conversation, quote etc. tapi sekarang gak ada. pencet, ya udah nongolnya ini. white blank space bahkan gak ada section buat title-nya :( jadi gak satisfying. hhhh ya udahlah, skip soalnya disini nggak mau ngomentarin 'perubahan' Tumblr tapi aku mau, sesuai judul, blabbering alias ngoceh aja. huft sebenernya lowkey ngeluh dengan sedikit bumbu self realization jadi ngeluhnya bakal (kayaknya) sedikit berbobot.

jadi kemarin-kemarin ini, means sampe sekarang masih, aku lagi di-state hilang arah. kata temenku yg lebih gede, ini yang namanya quarter life crisis alias problem umum mereka yang 20an terutama middle 20. huffttt aku kira aku udah ngalamin quarter crisis ini pas awal lulus kuliah, taunya berkepanjangan :" alias semakin nambah umur makin banyak crisis-nya and i think this time, the crisis already overflowing. kayak jadi banyak yang bikin tertekan dan ketakutan. apalagi kalo liat LinkedIn (akhir2 ini aku emang lagi sering buka LinkedIn, biasa nyari kerjaan), beuh, pingin aku capslock-in di profil relations ku, DAH PADA JADI ORANG Y LU PADA' hhhhh :( ya walaupun nggak mentereng banget tapi profilnya pada bagus. jenjang kerjanya jelas, terarah, kayak rapi aja gitu. meanwhile aku, dari start experience aja udah nggak appealing. kerja juga seringnya part time atau freelance. itu pun bukan di bidang yang krusial but i swear by God, i never slacking off. biar part timer tapi aku selalu manage untuk ngembangin diriku entah lewat apapun itu karena aku mikir, kalo bukan aku, siapa yang mau ngembangin aku? tempat kerja aku? boro-boro, mereka aja ngegajinya masih pake itungan jam padahal beban kerja udah ngalahin yang full time :( realita kerja di indo tuh gini. beban kerja >>>>>> apresiasi dan ini bikin sedih.

dulu pas awal lulus, tentu aja aku ambis. pengen kerja di tempat bagus, jam kerja jelas, salary menjanjinkan, ada jenjang karir, pokoknya everyone's dream job deh tapiiii balik lagi, realita kerja di indo tuh gini. kamu yang butuh ya kamu yang ngalah alias jiwa2 ambis yang kata Bung Karno bisa mengguncang dunia itu 'dipaksa' realistis instead idealis. sedih. jadi ya udah, lahir lah aku yang profesional part timer gini yang sering nggak merasa attach sama tempat kerja. jadi sering ngerasin urgensi buat keluar, pindah, nyari sesuatu yang lebih baik yang sebenarnya entah yang lebih baik itu ada apa nggak. sedih banget. sediiiihhh banget.

rasanya kayak mencurangi diri sendiri, terus-terusan ngerasa bersalah dan kasihan sama diri sendiri cs aku pribadi ngerasa i deserve more than this tapi gak tau, seiring berjalannya waktu dan seiring menjadi realistis itu, aku jadi kayak kehilangan waktu dan value.... kayak aku udah terlanjur nyebur di bidang ini, jadi part timer annually jadi ketika ngelamar kerja, mau aku memperbagus cv ku kayak apapun, aku bakal selalu punya pikiran gini:

ini bakal menarik para hr itu nggak sih? aku udah nggak fresh graduate tapi kenapa gak ada posisi yang mentereng di cv ku? hr pasti bakal sangsi sama aku.

apalagi ngeliat profil relations yang 'seenggaknya' keliatan lebih rapi dan settle dari aku :( itu sedih banget. banget. banget. mau nyalahin keadaan juga gimana? nggak bisa kan :(

but sike, sebenernya aku nyalahin keadaan. kayak, kenapa aku dulu nggak punya uang tabungan? jadi kalo wawancara ke jakarta bisa punya modal. atau, kenapa dulu aku mutusin pulang ke rumah yang literally ada di kabupaten. pelosok dan hampir nggak dikenal? banyak banget hal yang aku point out dan kambing hitamkan. pokoknya aku ini penuh sama what if's dan penyesalan2. aku se-nggak bagus itu dalemnya til the time, kemarin malem temenku ngirim chat. sederhana aja dan no context sebenernya tapi benar2 hit my core.

dang, aku benci banget konsep let something go or accepting something as it is or the power of now, i do really hate them karena aku ngerasa keadaan aku sekarang ini gak fair. gak bagus makanya gak layak untuk 'dimaklumi'. but then, lagi-lagi penyakit hati, huft.... kayaknya aku ini emang penuh penyakit hati. that's manifested too much til i become this kind of person: sering nyari kambing hitam dan terjebak sama masa lalu. intinya gak bersyukur. padahal tanpa aku sadari, orang yang gak bisa bersyukur adalah orang yang paling susah dibikin bahagia. they're hard to be pleased and unfortunately, i am them :(

makanya, setelah semalem nangis, tadi siang nangis, akhirnya aku mau pelan-pelan ngelakuin ini: menerima. menerima kalo aku emang masih part timer. menerima kalo aku belum pernah kerja di kantor; dengan jam kerja settle, gaji settle and everything settle di usia segini. menerima kalo usaha2ku (yg honestly setengah mati itu: ikut webinar, les, ngeluangin waktu belajar otodidak) dianggap b aja bahkan ga ada nilainya di mata rekruiter. maybe they just snapped and passed it. menerima juga kalo aku memang masih di-state yang menurutku nggak membanggakan. hilang. gak jadi apa-apa. menerima semua hal yang berlabel kurang itu. selain itu, aku juga mau belajar buat menanamkan prinsip ini lebih kuat:

dunia itu jahat tapi Tuhan baik. bahkan masih dikasih kesempatan buat hidup dan berusaha gini, bisa disebut keberuntungan. God's grace.

jadi ya nerima, accept all the shades of me tapi juga nggak menyerah untuk terus berusaha. karena aku udah pernah direbut idealisme nya, jadi akan aku kembaliin pelan-pelan. Hello! @flootweed replying to the post from before. the long format was killing me. why does tumblr look like this...

I haven’t watched episode 8 yet...or have I? If it’s the most recent one. No.

Is the hornbill a bird? It probably is but I have a terrible memory and I’m dumb so. I skipped the last few weeks because I’m scawwed. How are you liking it? I did see someone say that the hornbill makes sense (without knowing what it is...at all) bc heart transplant patients only live like 5-15 years after but someone in those comments pointed out that he was so young when he got his and that’s pretty rare so he has a higher likelihood of survival. Frankly, this is the only way I will proceed. Since when did shows ever care about the heart transplant health? Never and it needs to stay that way!

What did we think of ep 6? LMAO. I need opinions! And omg it makes me feel special when I can point things out to people because I so...rarely get to LOL. Editing is like one of my favorite things ever so I can be super particular about it but I try to do the thing you do when you’re supposed to see if it works within its context. I’d like to go in with scissors and glue but alas.

god yea i wouldnt say it is art but i also guess we technically have to since it is technically. in the way that technically performance artists are artists but mostly i uh technically ignore them. sort of in the same vein re: taking it easy...we coudl all be more understanding too. to slow it down like you mentioned about not being privvy to fucking eveyrthing and saying anything on our mind. i saw this person talk about y2k which was a huge deal while happening bc it was the turn of the millenium (bruh were u even alive?) but this twitter user grew up in a super super SUPER religious household and was like why do ppl make jokes about Y2K it was insanely traumatizing? though my first instinct was confused ive tried hard to like look more before i judge especially thanks to a friend of mine. turns out that with the further reading the more we found out he was just really traumatized; it was very common in religious households to be afraid of 2000. so we could have come at him with no understanding and he could have thought that everyone had the same experience with that year that he did. his feelings sit precedent though but i think it was just very hard for him to fathom.

you make a really excellent point. i think the young young gen zers are really really just interesting because it’s like this whole new world for them with leftist politics and they just can’t grasp the horrors of the world and the kind of freedom being a leftist can bring. and so many people don’t grow out of it. those people so happen to be the “least productive” in terms of how much time they spend IRL withe these issues. naturally, younger kids are gonna have a harder time. they are not as mobile as well so the internet becomes this place. but then it’s this echo chamber. and many times just things posted without sources. and social media NEEDS that to exist.

How can a chapter feel simultaneously rushed and incomplete?

Spoilers for Chapter 23 of Blue Box.

Last weekend I wrote how the pacing was bizarre for that weekend’s releases of some Jump serials, not just My Hero Academia (as I’ll get to in this review) but also other publications like Magu-chan and Blue Box. And, spoilers for Blue Box, jeez, that pacing at the end of the newest chapter this weekend was odd--but at least odd in a way that heightens interest in the story, as opposed to odd in My Hero Academia where this chapter felt incomplete.

I wish I could say that was the reason I am delayed writing this review, but it’s not. A lot of other tasks (webinar, job applications and interviews) and writing projects (working on some “Episode 7 Rule” posts, getting some more stuff published) took up time before I could share this review. But because Chapter 327 feels incomplete, the fact that I also get to use today to read and write about Chapter 327 helps to round out an actually finished installment to this story, so my delay ended up being serendipitous.

(And make up your own joke that I needed to take a break before reviewing a chapter titled “Rest!!”)

But before we can get to what was complete in this story, we have to muck through this chapter, which still feels incomplete.

That’s not to say Chapter 327 is bad. I mean, some of the art looks a little off to me, especially Tokoyami and Mina talking after All Might leaves the dorms. And I could debate how valid that quotation in the image above is, but I think Izuku’s face already reveals that, no, self-care only takes you so far, when societal improvements are not being made so that, in his world, children are not having to take on the fights adults refused to, whereas in my world...children should not have to take on the fights adults refused to about climate change, bigotry, police violence, sexual harassment and violence, poverty, hunger...

...God, this manga about supervillains got sadly realistic, and I hate it. Izuku’s face up there is the look of someone who has seen some shit, and one bath is not going to help.

As with that one chapter of Magu-chan, the seams of the story are showing, and that hinders how I personally get enjoyment. It’s one thing to see how a story is put together and appreciate how well that works, from a critical perspective or if you’re trying to imitate such story practices in your own writing. But it’s another thing when you see the way a story is put together because something just isn’t connecting the parts of that story well. After how great the previous chapters have been with the slow-burn to Izuku’s return to UA, Ochaco’s speech, and actually seeing Izuku getting heartfelt welcomes back by Kota, that giant woman he rescued, and that starfish hair guy all the way from Chapter 1, the rest of this chapter feels rushed. It’s not like you could drag out a lot of this stuff: there’s only so much time you can have Izuku and the boys bathing. But there is so much to fit in: cleaning up Izuku, seeing how his classmates react to his return and his secrets, All Might’s arrival, what this means moving forward to stop Shigaraki, and what is up with Endeavor and Todoroki’s side story. It’s a lot--and nothing really feels like it gets what it needs. Just to tease out every last feeling every last classmate has to Izuku keeping his Quirklessness and One For All a secret would need a light novel chapter per character.

And speaking of the My Hero Academia light novels, at least I can give some points to Horikoshi, though, for doing a better job writing the boys bathing than Mineta peeping on the girls, or that inane joke in one of the light novels--in which the boys see who can last longest in the hot bath, because that tired exhausting trope of “kids do dumb things.” Ugh, at some point, I’m going to write about how to handle writing young people well in a story so it’s not that ridiculous trope of “young people make dumb mistakes” that some writers use to move the plot along. The only example I’ve seen where that works lately is Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, and that’s because it doesn’t feel like those mistakes are to keep the plot moving but actually something innate to a character’s sense of justice or sentiment that, while foolish, is in competition with actual stakes, pros and cons, and part of the character’s core ethics, not just something ridiculous to get from plot point A to B. That light novel gag felt very much like “the boys have to do something stupid,” as opposed to “this is something that would make sense for the boys to do.” But I digress.

So, why do I give points to Horikoshi for this version of the bath gag? Because, as I am trying to say about Hanako-kun, this makes sense for how the characters would act, and moves the plot along. Bakugo struggling with what to call Izuku makes sense; Bakugo still being his rival makes sense; after how much character progression he has thankfully made by now, this late in the series, it makes sense that he is still going to regress to previous behavior. I’m grateful he regresses without verbally bullying Izuku (your mileage may vary whether he is still bullying him, though, and I’m open to being wrong on that point) and without physically attacking him (Bakugo cutting into Izuku’s head as a gag in the recent anime episode is still not funny).

But then the students ask about One For All and what Izuku has been going through--and we don’t get much more knowledge. Todoroki shuts down that discussion by saying he needs to get some sleep, so, again, that forestalls any discussion until probably some chapters in a future light novel.

Izuku is not ready for sleep yet, though, as he worries about how he treated All Might earlier. I’m not going to disagree that Izuku was not being kind to All Might, but what I appreciate about the moment is that, and forgive my phrasing, from both sides, it makes sense: Izuku was not as polite as he should have been but hardly as grimdark as many readers feared he would, and All Might was doing something kind for Izuku but has been failing to reach out to him. All of that character dynamic works.

But what hasn’t worked is how quickly their reunion and apologies are. It reminds me how quickly All Might insisted, after losing One For All for good, that he would be there for Izuku--and really wasn’t. All Might refused to introduce Izuku to Nighteye; All Might kept secrets about all that One For All could do; All Might was not there during the PLF Fight, and he knows he cannot be in the same role for Izuku while he’s playing vigilante. The apologies keep coming but aren’t really getting anywhere for these two characters, not before Izuku just passes out from exhaustion. There’s a lot left for these two, so no wonder people take that death flag from All Might peering in from the window to think he’s going to die soon and only then will he and Izuku have any meaningful resolution. Granted, the next chapter is going to go into more detail about All Might’s vestige inside One For All, so he won’t be quite dead, but that death cheat just makes this inability to resolve anything between the bad teacher and the disobedient student all the more frustrating.

At least Caleb Cook continues to translate some good gags out of Mina, such as when she criticizes All Might’s departure. But that only reinforces how empty his apologies feel when he speaks to the class, especially when he again has to run to pass on his intelligence to the police and probably Endeavor, which also makes all of this all the more infuriating because you would think that would be his first priority. I get the point of being there for his student--even if I still don’t think All Might has been--and it does characterize him well that of course he would go to his student first instead of passing on the intelligence from Stain first. But it also makes me want to shake All Might and tell him to get the intelligence to the police, given what we learn about it in the next chapter. So, again, the seams of the story are showing: Horikoshi delays revealing what All Might has learned until that chapter is ready to share with readers.

And that news from Stain is probably going to disrupt any of Jiro’s plans for a concert, and, yeah, after a weekend in my real world where concerts got more attention than reproductive rights marches throughout the United States, you’ll forgive me if I don’t care much about this plot point. Heck, comics, as a silent medium, invoking music, has always been a bizarre choice for me: that works for the animated series, but for the comics, it’s hard to translate that auditory medium to a visual one.

Then we wrap up the chapter with an exposition dump about Stain’s intelligence. When I first read this chapter, before Chapter 328 came out, this felt like an abrupt ending. Realizing this ending leads naturally to the next chapter, to show what Stain was up to at Tartarus, doesn’t make it work any better for me. Invoking the “we have one month to stop Shigaraki” rule, only to break it in the next chapter and reveal they have three days, is a more cynical method of the “don’t cross the streams” rule from Ghostbusters: this exists to set up a rule to then break it so that the protagonists’ chances of success dwindle further.

It bothers me because I have seen this done better elsewhere. The final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender wraps up with Zuko learning the Gaang has decided to wait until after Sozin’s Comet, thinking they’ll have a better chance. That makes sense, and while the Gaang’s plan is a final-episode reveal, it fits with their strategy: Aang couldn’t take on the Fire Nation when it was depowered, so taking them on when they are fully powered and he hasn’t perfected his fire skills is a practical approach. Then Zuko reveals that the deadline has to be moved up, because his father will take over the world during the Comet, something Zuko didn’t tell them until now because he already thought the plan was to stop the Fire Nation before the Comet, so why would scaring them help? This was a failure of communication on the part of both parties, and it introduced the rules--”Wait until after the Comet” and “No, attack before the Comet”--at the same time that it disrupted those rules, so we as the audience were not manipulated for a cynical gotcha moment. And that’s what My Hero Academia has done.

For the longest time My Hero Academia kept repeating that Shigaraki would need two months to increase his power. In the next chapter we learn they overestimated that time, and they got three days left. This feels rushed, as rushed as how this chapter was to wrap up Izuku’s return to UA, All Might’s apology, and the Class 1-A reunion. And I just didn’t like it. More was needed to give this chapter some meat, and it just isn’t here. The next chapter, thankfully, is better, given some payoff to what this chapter sets up, as well as a hint of things to come, but on its own, this chapter is like the first half of an anime episode, rather than a complete package.

Building a Bible-Based Faith (That Isn’t Terrible)

“Test everything; hold fast what is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21

When I first started to realize that I was attracted to guys, a tiny crack appeared in my faith: how could a loving God knit me together in my mother’s womb then give me these desires for love, intimacy, and family with no righteous outlet to express them?

I’d been told that “homosexuality” was sinful, but I was never quite sure why. I needed to be sure, so I turned to the Bible. That was terrifying. Who was I to question what my church leaders acted like was common knowledge? And then I stumbled upon 1 Thessalonians 5:21 and I realized that questioning my beliefs wasn’t heresy, it was Biblical!

It took me YEARS to sort out that being LGBTQ was not only “ok” but an important part of the diversity of God’s creation. (If you want a peak at what I learned during the process, check this out)

Now that I know it’s ok to be queer — despite what some religious leaders say — I asked myself: what else were they wrong about?

Figuring out I was queer was an invitation to question my faith and to take a fresh look at “what the Bible” says about so many things.

Thank God I’m queer, because I have discovered in the Bible — and the community, experience, expertise, and traditions of Christians across millennia — a faith that is liberating and life-giving… and so much more alive than the evangelical faith of my childhood.

Conservatives talk a lot about being “Bible-believing” or having a “Bible-based” faith.

Too often that’s code for “My interpretation of Christianity is right and everyone who doesn’t measure up is sinful and going to hell.”

While I think it’s entirely possible to be an upstanding, moral person without ever turning to the Bible (or even believing in God!), I’m not ready to let go of this sacred text.

When I look at the Bible, here’s what I see.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to liberate the oppressed, and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. – Luke 4:18-19

Jesus begins his public ministry by quoting from the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 61:1-2, to be specific).

In doing so, he roots his ministry in his Jewish faith and, more specifically, in the Hebrew prophets.

If you’ve asked “What did Jesus come to do?” or “Why did God send Jesus?” … well Jesus answers that question himself in Luke:

to bring good news to poor people

to set prisoners free

to give sight to the blind

to liberate the oppressed

and to usher in God’s abundance

But Jesus doesn’t want to go at it alone. He begins calling disciples to join him in his ministry. Jesus isn’t looking for converts, though.

“Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19)

He’s looking for doers to join him in the work of his ministry. And what is that ministry?

Throughout the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, we get a look at God’s priorities. When I look at the ministry of Jesus, I don’t see a departure from the Hebrew scriptures, I see a continuation of them.

In the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, there are 2,350 verses about money, 300 about social justice and the poor, and even 24 about immigration.

But it’s not really about plucking verses out of context or tallying up the number of verses about this subject vs that subject. To take the Bible seriously and faithfully, you need to know what to do with it. What are the central themes and what are the exceptions? What are commandments and what might be examples of humans messing up, despite their best intentions? What taps into the divine and what is just a reflection of a time-bound, cultural norm?

In Deuteronomy,

I have set life and death, blessing and curse before you. Now choose life.

In Amos,

I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

In Luke, when asked what one must do to gain eternal life, Jesus shared a story that ended with the Samaritan taking care of the injured man and paying for his healthcare … “Go and do likewise” was Jesus’s answer.

In John,

I came so that they could have life—indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest.

In Acts,

All the believers were united and shared everything. …There were no needy persons among them

There’s a whole lot in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures: letters, commandments, poems, stories, parables, and even some visions.

What are we to make of all of these?

Genesis 1 ends with, “God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good” and Revelation ends with “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.” When you look at Scripture — from Genesis to Revelation — what you see is that God calls us to be faithful by loving ourselves and taking care of each other.

Jesus seems to agree. In Matthew 22, he says,

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You must love your neighbor as you love yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.

If you aren’t drawing yourself and others closer to God, if you aren’t filled with love for God, for yourself, and for others, you’re not following Jesus’s commands.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7 that “by their fruits you will recognize” whether a religious teaching is true or not.

The fruits of anti-LGBTQ theology reveal its falseness: depression, despair, suicide, fractured families, loss of faith, bullying, harassment. The fruits of affirming theology testify to its rightness: a return to faith, a healing of relationships, and a vibrance and resurgence in church life.

But it’s not just about being “LGBTQ affirming” or not. Does your theology put you at odds with your mind, soul, heart, or body? Does your theology sow division in your family, community, nation, or world? Does your theology excuse or encourage violence? Does your theology exacerbate your mental health problems?

Or does it lead you to life and joy? Does it comfort you? Does it give you hope? Does it lead you to treat others well?

Judge your theology by its fruits.
