#got 8x04
Just had a thought:
1x10 - here is where Dany is free of Viserys and Drogo has just died. She is about to embark on the journey to get the IT back. She has the pyre for Drogo set alight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then:
Jorah is gone, she now knows who Jon is (which creates strain between them), and she's intent on getting to KL and taking back the IT. She sets Jorah's pyre alight herself. I wouldn't say she is free of Jon so to speak, but I think she's free of the constraints of her trying to appear to be like Rhaegar was. In a way, this knowledge frees her of that if that makes sense. (for example, I think she knows here that she will never be Jon aka Rhaegar and that's why her and Jon looking at each other, it's not only a farewell to her trust in Jon but also to that ideal so many had of her)
Both times someone she loved (no matter the type of love) had died, they were people she lost due to circumstances that she herself created (urging Drogo to trust Mirri Maz Dhur & landing Drogon where wights could get to him which resulted in her falling off of him), and she is about to embark on a new version of herself so to speak. She always had that darkness inside of her, but she had always been held back (or it had been tempered by others like Jorah). After each death/burning, now she's that much closer to her goal (the IT/new world) and what she ultimately chooses to become.
Fire and blood.
In both scenes.
...Parallels.

Hi Em!!!!! Happy to have you back 🥳
Would you have wanted to know more about Hailey’s family? Actually see her father, her mum or even her brothers? What if Pd had brought her father into the mix after that ending scene in 804?
Hi hello!! Thank you for saying that🥰
I would like to know more about Hailey’s family!! I’m not particularly interested in seeing her father or having her face him, but I would love to meet her mom and her brothers and I’d be so curious to know what her relationship is like with them.
Quite honestly, I was expecting her father to become a factor in s8 after 8x04. Looking back now, I’m glad they didn’t because she already had enough trauma to deal with that season. It does make me a little annoyed that they used him and that plot point to dampen the mood at the start of upstead’s relationship though. Obviously it provided the opportunity to highlight Jay being supportive and respecting her boundaries the same way he always did even before they got together, but the timing of that storyline and them never bringing it up again has always bothered me.

At one point I was thinking that maybe Jonsa is romanticised more in show than it would be in books. D&d had romanticised many relationships in show so I thought maybe jonsa will also be romanticised one. But after looking so many visual parallels with almost all couples in GOT made me think why are they super focussed in this ship. Why did other ships get some kind of closure but not Jonsa? In books too Jonsa clues are there and it seems most positive. So why the makers backed out?🤔
There are so many possibilities, anon!
Jonsa wasn’t ever a thing (books or show), and we’ve made connections no one intended to exist
Show Jonsa was something that happened as a result of Kit and Sophie’s unexpected chemistry and the writers played with it just because it was good tv without ever planning to actually go there
Show Jonsa was something they came up with, toyed with, thought about making explicit, but then abandoned
Book Jonsa is a thing and D&D wanted to hint at it but were never going there themselves
Book Jonsa is a thing and D&D didn’t want to do it but Kit and Sophie had such great chemistry we made show Jonsa a thing despite their distaste for it
I’m probably missing some variation, but you get the idea. Personally....
I have a hard time believing that the same showrunners who tried to shoehorn in a last minute reason for Dany burning KL (even though they knew that was happening for seasons and she talked about her willingness to burn cities to the ground from like s3 on) were thoughtful enough to create a meaningful dynamic between Jon and Sansa (while they simultaneously kept hinting at Sansa being a traitorous bitch) that spanned three seasons.
Even if I can accept that as a happy accident, I don’t believe for a minute that D&D came up with the idea of Jon and Sansa reuniting first of all the Starks or working to protect the North/their family together. They whitewashed villains, but they cast a lot of doubt on whether or not Sansa was loyal to her family, and they stripped her of her romanticism, and they didn’t give her a love interest although all the other mains had one, so, their habit of painting with a gentler brush never extended to poor Sansa.
What could have happened is that they looked at what Martin told them and thought they’d mix and match, shuffle the order of things to make it work better for their audience. As in, Cersei and Dany, the only women in power were dying in the end, so they thought making Sansa queen after that would forestall accusations of sexism. I think Sansa will be queen in the books too, but it’s possible that Jon is chosen KitN, his identity becomes known, and he marries Sansa to unify the North when it might all fall apart otherwise. She could be queen earlier in the story, but obviously, that ticks different boxes than her being chosen by her people to lead. If that were how the books were to play out, then I could imagine D&D thought it felt more empowering to do away with the Jonsa marriage and allow Sansa’s rise to power to be about her alone and it might make their lives easier if it happened in the same episode in which Dany was killed.
Or, another option is that book Jonsa is a chaste love. Emotionally rewarding and fulfilling for the characters, meaningful as they choose each other over and over, but ultimately, can’t be together. If it’s something that romantic but not absolutely plot necessary, D&D could have decided to have their cake and eat it too. Still use the Jonsa relationship as an important part of the arcs emotionally, but never acknowledge the nature of their feelings, and instead do Jxnerys which was far more popular with the fans.
I really don’t know what to make of what D&D did, especially because it doesn’t feel like they dropped it before s8 in which they had Sansa behave in such a noticeably jealous way people who hated Jonsa before started to wonder after 8x04 if it was real. My tendency is to think that when they opted to hide Dark Dany, the nature of Jon and Sansa’s bond (whether it was ever meant to be acted on or not) couldn’t be revealed until after the burning of KL, but then they realized how badly this all was going to come across and scratched it.

Looking at the gif you shared, I would like to point out just how much MORE ripped Jesse got between 8x04 and 9x09. Someone should do a side by side. In slow motion. For science.
@spiridakos said she is up for the challenge.

M*A*S*H - Viewguide, S8
Are you interested in the long-running anti-war situation tragicomedy M*A*S*H (1972-1983), but there are simply so many asterisks and so many episodes?
Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.
— — —
Season 8: Klinger stops wearing dresses and it immediately sets this whole edifice on the fucking wobble.
Maybe this season more than any set I’ve put together yet I’m aware could give an entirely different impression if I’d picked even just a couple different episodes than I did. As is, I made my selections by asking the following questions: Is it good? Is it interesting? And, Does it make me want to slap it up on the x-ray illuminator, point at it, and yell, “What!!?” If you (an episode) reach two of these criteria, you’re in!
Enjoy this more petite but dare I say piquant collection:
M*A*S*H - Season 8 Recommended sequence
8x04-05 ‘Goodbye To Radar, Parts 1 & 2’ - Although they, curiously, did not, we gotta start here. M*A*S*H has finally figured out how to do a farewell episode for a departing cast member, and it’s for my ridiculous sincere little buddy Radar. 💔 Ohh man, if you wanna talk end of an era!! Gary Burghoff as Corporal O’Reilly has been with this show from when it was a Robert Altman movie, almost just fucking molecularly, he IS M*A*S*H, and it’s only through a neat bit of acting Gary pulls that I was able to find a little bit of peace with it: here at long last, Radar O’Reilly finally feels like he’s grown up. It’s time for him to leave home. But I’m gonna miss him!!
8x06 ‘Period of Adjustment’ - Incredibly, we had this chat, and then the very next episode I watch is this one. LOL. This episode looked me straight in the eye and said “‘I could fix him’ well I could make him worse <3,” and then left my ass in pieces. Just, come here, be here with me. Pull up a patch of floor. We’ve got this one on the light box.
8x09 ‘Mr. and Mrs. Who’ - And now for something completely different: something so familiar. Remember years ago when like half of M*A*S*H episodes were about goofy half-forgotten drunken escapades on R&R interwoven with a sticky little medical problem the doctors are trying to solve under adverse conditions? For one night only, we’re bringing that back! Get your tix.
8x11 ‘Life Time’ - Honk honk! EXPERIMENTATION STATION. Alan Alda co-writes a 25 minute real-time surgical episode with their medical consultant, actual doctor Walter Dishell, M.D. When that little ticking clock face chyron got tossed up in the corner, oh girlie, absolutely. Also notable for BJ fully transporting back to his first season thoughtful sad sweetie register (??) (!), and, since it’s not otherwise a cold episode, Alda coming up with a localized reason for at least him personally to still get to pretend to be cold.
8x15 ‘Yessir, That’s Our Baby’ - A baby is left at the MASH, and every man in camp is immediately like, (tenderly) I AM MOM. Unmissable. Unbelievable. I am torn between laughing, cooing, and the I GUESS!!! guy.
8x23 ‘War Co-Respondent’ - After his very rewarding directorial debut last season, Mike Farrell returns to the chair with a script of his own this time, and it’s a jewel! Witty and referential, from Cole Porter lyrics to how in Charles’s first season his and BJ’s great war was Massachusetts vs. California. And that’s not all Farrell hearkens to in M*A*S*H past: Hawkeye as an incorrigible yet endearing flirt (it’s the shamelessness), and how whenever BJ has struck a Romantic figure, capital R, it’s always been so rooted in his quietness. Mike...!
8x22 ‘Dreams’ - Everyone’s SO COLD and been working for two sleepless days straight, and as it finally eases just enough for them to start covering for each other’s naps, said naps are all strange nightmares about war surgery. That’s right, it’s Alda again (could you tell by the overcoats? and TRAUMA?) and god, he really effectively renders the way dreams can seem kind of banal and then just bend at the wrong angles. Of course my favorite of the season, and your unusual, haunting finale.

Jon Chose To Protect Sansa Who He Loved the Most - It's Right There In the Dialogue and Script
I know I've already talked about this in this post, but I missed this one part of the dialogue before.
Tyrion uses several different tacks to try to get Jon to consider killing Dany. Nothing works. Not the threat to Jon himself, not the threat to the people, not Tyrion about to be executed, not being in the grip of a tyrant now that's actually worse than the Lannisters, not his code of doing the right thing -- nothing. Until Tyrion mentions Jon's sisters. When Tyrion sees this catches Jon's attention, he turns the conversation towards Sansa. And that is what eventually gets through to Jon, despite his initial protestation.
Tyrion: "And your sisters? Do you see them bending the knee?" (8x04, Sansa is saying to Jon in the Godswood "That doesn't mean I want to kneel to someone--" before she's cut off)
Jon: "My sisters will be loyal to the throne." (we know Arya is not a threat to Dany, that she's aware of anyway, I seriously doubt Arya would stand by as Sansa or Jon is about to die - but still Arya isn't the one who won't bend the knee if need be - Arya makes it clear in her scene with Jon before this that not only is Jon in danger but Sansa will not accept Dany as Queen)
Tyrion: "Why do you think Sansa told me the truth about you? Because she doesn't want Dany to be Queen."
Jon: "She doesn't get to choose."
Tyrion: "No, but you do. And you have to choose now."
youtube
So Jon makes the choice to confront Dany about what happened to KL and we get the throne room scene. Here, Jon angrily does so at first, then tries to appeal to her by asking her to forgive Tyrion (like Jorah did back in 8x02). When she refuses, he pleads with her, but it falls on deaf ears. He even starts to get a bit emotional, knowing what he may have to do. And when Dany says a certain line, he now knows what he has to do (which is reiterated by the script by the line "Jon understands what this means for those he loves most"). Sure enough, he says his goodbye to her and then stabs her in the heart.
Dany: "It's not easy to see something that's never been before. A good world."
Jon: "How do you know? How do you know it will be good?"
Dany: "Because I know what is good. And so do you."
Jon: "I don't."
Dany: "You do. You do, you've always known."
Jon: "What about everyone else? All the other people who think they know what's good?"
Dany: "They don't get to choose."
Tumblr media
And that's when he knows. That's when he makes the decision.
youtube
Not only did Jon keep his promise to protect Sansa, not only did he make the same decision Ned did back in season 1 for Sansa and for Jon himself when he was born, but he also loved Sansa the most (I mean in this scenario, when the decision between Sansa and Dany came down; he obviously loves Arya and Bran as well). It was the idea that Sansa was going to be liberated that finally got through to him and made him realize he had to make that difficult decision.
The North had already bent the knee.
Westeros had a new queen now.
The Wildlings and Ghost went back home.
Tyrion was going to be executed.
Bran and Arya weren't threats to Dany's reign from Dany's own perspective. (She knows Jon loves them both very much but they're not standing in Dany's way of her destiny and not a threat to Jon who she considers to be hers now)
They literally connected the dots for the audience.
It was Sansa. Sansa who he couldn't let Dany hurt.
Jon loved Sansa the most.
Tumblr media
Bonus:
Sansa was the one Jon always looked back with, never Dany. (that good ol' romantic trope)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Jon literally left himself (aka Ghost) with her when he had to go South to meet Dany, still as King in the North, to watch over her and protect her. (there's a reason they cut that scene and only had Sansa allude to it in 7x05 with "He can't just expect it to sit there and wait for him like Ghost." "He didn't. He trusted you to hold it for him.")
Loved. The. Most.

Ok but Morgan stated that he and Reid hadn't much time to talk just the two of them when he discovers about his gf in 8x04- and literally two episodes later he is all "Reid join the team, please join the team, come on-" got me thinking- it was clear that he pushed Spence to play to build his confidence more and let out the potential he saw on him that nobody else saw, that is the whole theme of the episode- but like.... I also like to hc Derek wanted to spend some time to just connect with the genious, yknow? I mean aside from the whole stopping serial killers thing. Like knowing that now that someone caught Spencer's eyes that time would be more limited (let's ignore what happened later)
Anyways- AGAHGAHAGAHAGHAG MY HEART THE SOFTBALL SCENE OMFG AHAJDYUISHRDUIWOASHNAKESNDIEFONDNMKWI THEY ARE ALL SO CUTE AGAHAGHAG
I am very normal about that episode.

hwy i gotta say that i really love your occasional braime post bc theyre really everything to me. like got crashed and burned long ago. but i still think abt them ever since i watched the series for the first time like three years ago. i dont have the slightest inclination to do a got rewatch but i do comeback to their scenes together every year or so bc its that good. tbh i knew the series as a whole was going downhill fast but it didn’t really set in until 8x04 when they undo all of jaime’s character development in 10 seconds and as a byproduct affirm brienne’s insecurities and fear about her worth and capability of being loved, romantically or otherwise. anyway your last post reminded me of them and to me, they are together always.
theyve got me down so bad ive rewatched the supercut twice in two weeks i have notes in my notes app about a primer ive been going back into the wasteland (ao3 tag) (astolat works)

you've got a worried jay for 2 seasons now (8x04 - 9x22) shouldn't the compensation be that you've got a worried wife for 2 seasons now?
I don't really see it that way, for me we could get a bit of both but if I had to choose, we've had so many amazing worried Hailey scenes before they were together ( 7×09/7×10 are my favorite pre Upstead episodes) and I'd realy love to see one now, see how diferent (or not) it'll be now that they're married.
