Bird time! As a certified Bird Nerd I loved all the references to bird species in this chapter so I figured I would show them off in case you want a visual in your mind.
To try to figure out exactly which species are mentioned (even though I know Hugo was not concerned with what genus and species he was referring to), I looked up the frequency of bird species seen in the Luxembourg Gardens in the first quarter of June on eBird! Granted, I have no idea how much avian diversity has changed in the city of Paris from the 1800s to now, but I don't know my European species very well so this was a huge help.
1. "fauvettes" / "linnets" According to wikipedia, "fauvette" is generally agreed to refer to the family Sylviidae , specifically the genus Sylvia, though it can refer to other passerine species. "Linnet," meanwhile, seems to refer to the family Fringillidæ (true finches). I'm going to go with the original French and say that these are what in English we would call "warblers" rather than finches. The only member of the genus Sylvia seen in the Luxembourg Gardens in early June on eBird is the Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) (pictured). The other Sylvia species seen in the gardens but more rarely is the Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin).
Tumblr media
2. "passereaux" / "sparrows" In ornithology, "passeraux" in English would be "passerines" which is the biggest order of birds, comprising about half of all bird species! However, the TLFi states that "passereau" can be a synonym for "moineau," or "sparrow." So I think Hapgood is correct in that translation and we can narrow down the species a bit. The only sparrow that is seen in the Luxembourg Gardens at any time of year is the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus).
Tumblr media
3. "pique-bois" / "woodpeckers" Finally a straight-forward translation! According to eBird data, there are two species of woodpeckers seen in the Luxembourg Gardens. The only one seen at the correct time of year is the Eurasian Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) (pictured), although the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor) has been seen just a little earlier in the year.
Tumblr media
4. "les hirondelles" / "the swallows" A species I know quite a lot about! This is undoubtedly referring to the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), which I had the privilege of studying for a few years to research their movement patterns. The line in the text is so wonderful and shows that Hugo has definitely watched these graceful birds before, as he captured the nature in which they glide and skim with speed near the ground, foraging for flying insects: “the swallows indulged in the charming threat of flying low.”
Tumblr media
5. "le ramier" / "ring-dove" I believe this is pretty straight-forwardly referring to the Common Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbus) which is the most commonly seen bird overall in the gardens in early June!
Tumblr media
6. "le pinson" / "chaffinch" According to wikipedia, the term "pinson" is another common-name term given to multiple species of grain-eating passerines, however, there are two "true" pinson species, one of which is seen in the Luxembourg Gardens at this time: the Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs).
Tumblr media
7. "le chardonneret" / "goldfinch" We're once again dealing with an ambiguous term here for birds in the family Fringillidae. Unfortunately, the birds that have "Chardonneret" in their common name do not appear on any eBird lists for the Luxembourg Gardens. The only other Fringillidae species that are recorded in the gardens (besides the Common Chaffinch) are the European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris) and the European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). While neither have been seen in early June, the European Greenfinch is seen more commonly. However, I think this could be a toss up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. "le rouge-gorge" / "red-breast" This one is pretty straightforward, "le Rouge-gorge familier" is none other than the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) (aka extreme borb).
Tumblr media
9. "le verdier" / "the green finch" We've already discussed all of the finches that have been documented in the Luxembourg Gardens, and since "verdier" refers to birds in the genus Chloris, this last bird mention is again talking about our friend the European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris).
After reading this chapter I thought Hugo was listing so many bird species... which he certainly did, but after poking around on eBird for what's been seen at the Luxembourg Gardens in the past I want to know why he focused so much on the finches and didn't mention any thrushes, swifts, tits, wrens, treecreepers, or so many more!

for whom the bell tolls.
in which some hq men choose their wedding song (from my wedding song playlist). no particular ranking or order, just collective yearning.
warnings: none, just tooth-rotting fluff. selfish yearning on my part, but i hope you all enjoy <3.
s. kiyoomi <3
“someone who loves me” by Sara Bareilles
he’s smitten, like cupid’s arrow had struck him through the center of his chest. he’s certain of it on your first date together, and he’s reminded of it every morning he’s waking up next to you. the day you procalimed “yes” with tears in your eyes as he knelt before you, he was praying begging you would ignore the salty drops on his cheeks. he’d never met someone that set his heart aflame before, and it was more than thrilling to know that you felt the same way. as he stood before you at the end of the aisle, he’s trembling. he can’t stop the tears from gracing his tanned cheeks, eyes locked in on your gorgeous face as you’re escorted to him with steady steps. he’s never seen anything so beautiful, something that he was certain would replace every other core memory in his mind. this moment, this is when he’s feeling the most surreal. you’re blushing at him, a beautiful grin playing on your kissable lips as you finally stand beside him. he’s tempted to turn away, to hide his tears from you, but your hand reaches to swipe his cheek, and more tears flow. he’s so lucky, so damn lucky to have you until the day he dies. he’s so lucky to have won the love of someone as kind, caring, and witty as you. he’s lucky that his mess was never enough to scare you away, and when he kisses you he thinks “i am so lucky to have someone who loves me”.
u. wakatoshi.
“Monster (feat. King Princess)” by Adventure Time, King Princess
ushiwaka’s never been good with words, and that didn’t change the day he proposed to you. he knew words could never unscramble the way his heart beats for you; they would pale in comparison for the way he loves you. he’s always needed your closeness, your touch, and your time. he finds you in all he does, and that’s when he knew he loved you. wakatoshi loves music more than he had before because it says things he knows he couldn’t. he never knew what love truly felt like, but he would describe it like an itch only satiated by being with you. the first time he confessed something so kind, so thoughtful, was in front of every loved one you had on your wedding day. the public display of his devotion to you had his chest swelling with anxiety, but the cheerful tears that graced the pretty blush of your cheeks was enough to assure him that he made the right confession. his words didn’t quite convey it all, all the years of built-up emotion. that’s why when this song plays, he’s boiling over with love for you and he’s bringing you into his warm embrace as he ushers you to the dance floor. you’re taken aback at the confessional, the willingness to share such an intricate part of himself in the song; you barely finish the first dance before you’re crying into his chest.
m. atsumu.
“Somewhere Only We Know” by The Warbler (Glee—this version is the best version, please)
atsumu’s always been a cheesy lover. he loves to serenade you, to blindside you with an affectionate concert in the middle of your livingroom. he loves giving you so much love it’s embarrasing, and it’s because he’s always known he’s loved you, and it’s pained him to keep it to himself. his love for you is spilling over in every moment the two of you have, and he never fails to make romance a staple in your relationship. the public displays of affection are never boring with atsumu, even before he dropped to one knee. this song is the one he hummed to you after your first night together. he hummed it again after he drove the two of you home after dinner with your parents. and finally, he hummed it as he prepared to pop the glorious question that had his palms sweating. the jovial tone and the innocent but personal lyrics of the song make him think of the earlier days of your partnership, the days he fell harder than he’d expected to. there were many places only the two of you knew, many places he wanted to show you. his devotion to you spilled over into this song, and tears met your eyes as he extended his hand to you on your special day, dragging you along to the dance floor. he sings the whole song to you as you slow dance for all to see. he knows this song is cheesy, but he also knows that it’s a testament to how long he’s loved you and how much longer he plans to—for eternity.
b. koutaro.
“Pink in the Night” by Mitski
this song has been rent-free in koutaro’s mind since he’d heard you play it during your night-time routine. he remembered the lyrics just so he could look it up when you weren’t around, playing it over and over until he learned every rhyme. the song was like it was written for him, for the both of you. loving you felt like he was warm all over, glowing whenever he thought of you. he’s always flushed when a teammate asks about you, quick to answer in a long-winded discussion about your new favorite whatever. he’s always beaming about you in interviews, on phone calls, on tour. he sees your face and all he can think is “i love you. i love you. i love you.”. he finds himself overwhelmed the amount of love that spills from his heart when he says his vows, tears speckling the eys of his groomsmen. when he kisses you after the “i do”, he remembers the song once more, claiming he needed to kiss you until he did it right. you’re beaming as he continues to speckle you with love-filled, sugary sweet kisses. he kisses you before the reception. he kisses you during the speeches from friends. he kisses you whenever you return from the bathroom. he’s grateful he has an eternity to kiss you because he’s never truly certain they will ever be right enough for communicating just how much he loves you.

do the cats in wac have any stuff about gender and sexuality? what was it like for cats like canary and lain figuring out who they are?
see, for once in my stupid life, bigotry towards queer people isn't a theme in WAC at all so I haven't thought THAT much about how these cats do gender and such. I know it is widely accepted and most people won't give a shit about it. a "do what you want kinda thing." There are however pretty ingrained gender roles. Men go to war women care for children you know the deal. They are often freely allowed to do the other's roles with little to no pushback, but there are expectations ya know.
Lain figured out his gender near the start of the war/conquest. He was still fairly young and was surrounded by other guys, and just felt much more connected to them and manhood than to womanhood (women were allowed to fight in the war but. you know.). Of course, him exploring his identity and feeling more like himself was stifled by the King choosing out his new name for him, instead of allowing him to pick one himself.
Warbler grew up in a colony that did not give people's names until they had a job. Until they had one, they were simply called "molly" or "tom" based on their gender. Warbler even as a young child didn't really like being constantly referred to by her birth gender and was very happy when Crane took her in and she found out she was able to pick out her own name! After that she very quickly put together that she wasn't boy. Warbler really wants to connect with other trans people and she tried to with Canary but then she died. and then she tries to with Grouse and Grouse is a bitch.
GROUSE IS ALSO TRANS. I FORGET IF I'VE SAID THAT. Grouse figured out he was trans when he was young and still living on his own with his family. he simply just Felt More Boy. They were all chill and fine with it! Though honestly when Condor saved him I think Condor would be a bit thick skulled and be like..... "boy?? with pussy????" about it. not in a bigoted way but in a. he genuinely does not understand.
Canary is a special case cause she's not binary trans like the rest of them. She's like. Genderfluid cis guy. She identifies wholly with being a dude but she likes to have fun with it. She's always liked doing some of the more "womanly tasks" (primarily nest making and caring for kittens and cleaning stuff up) and found it more fun then hunting or anything. She's a dude but also a housewife. you understand. you get me. This probably came out the most when she met Mariner and mariner said some like. insane shit like "you're a bee on the outside but you're as graceful as a flower" and she was just like "sure yeah i'll adopt that into my world view can you call me a woman even tho i am literally a man"

my fics masterpost
Please note: the following fics are only available on AO3, and are only intended to be published on this platform as Glee fanfiction. If you see a version of any of them on another site, or in print/eBook format (particularly for purchase), know that it is unauthorised and stolen.
While I do not write NSFW/smut, please check the tags and trigger warnings before reading my works.
this life, well it's slipping right through my hands - (unholybinchicken)
my fic series (aka "be gay, do crime, make art and breed lizards")
but when i'm older, i'll be so much stronger, i'll stay up for longer (meet me at our spot) - brittana and friends in middle school band class
lie amongst your lies like tuna in the brine - 2009 but it's the unholy trinity, puck and finn
the great new directions takeover - chaos ensues when glee club is cancelled (an alternate take on 1x22 inspired by Heartbreak High)
i'm open to falling from grace - two mentally ill teenagers attempt to reclaim some semblance of normality (if it ever existed in the first place) after a traumatic summer
i love the way you love but i hate the way i'm supposed to love you back - santana's sad gay era and sam's need for a rebound leads to an unexpected friendship* blossoming (*just want to reiterate that the samtana in this fic is entirely platonic)
don't you know to cry in shame (when you've got yourself to blame) - will, lumbered with detention supervision duty, is confronted with one of his less-than-stellar teaching moments (will kind of sucks in this but is way less shitty than canon will)
(though they do pretend) they won't go when i go - midway through her senior year, santana has a major menti-b and attempts to hide it from everyone (relevant TWs at the start of the fic)
chatty chatty bang bang (a series of glee chatfics)
brittany s pierce's guide to sniffing out the mentally ill - a season 3 glee chatfic featuring past and present new directions and a couple warblers (follows the same timeline as the fic series)
other works
stranded on the line where i lost you - santana, shaken by the ostracism from her childhood best friend quinn, meets brittany in high school (this is an AU where santana never joins the cheerios and brittany is in the grade above her)
Heartbreak High fics (again, these stories are only intended to be published as fanfiction on AO3)
just between you and me - missy and quinni meet at year 7 camp, grow up together and fall in love (slow burn, mostly canon compliant up to the season 1 finale, not particularly spider white friendly)
rack off - a heartbreak high chatfic

rank the first three people you see (on your dash) and your reasonings.
*cracks knuckles* Okay, I'm gonna preface this by saying that most men are meh, but that's not their fault. They have to compete with Blainer, who is the epitome of male beauty. And women are all gorgeous to me, personally. Like, I find it's hard for a woman to be ugly. So, let's start
Tumblr media
Giselle Clarke - She's easily a 10/10. She's really really pretty, like on par with Frannie Fabray, Salma Hayek, & Margo Robbie in terms of effortless beauty and grace. Personality? Check. Amazing hairstyles? Check. Nice outfits? Check. But you lose a point because your icon picture is boring. It looks like you're showing off the outfit, but your outfit is not giving us anything. I haven't interacted with her much, so this might change, but Final score: 9/10
Nick Something - He's, like, a 4/10 at first glance. But once you start paying attention you see that he has some nice curls, an okay smile, and, admittedly, nicer eyelashes than Blainer. He gets one(1) point added to his score. Also, have you seen his tree trunk legs?!? One point for those. Finally, he gets another two points because, without him, The Warblers would look like that meme of the men on Ryan Murphy's show that look identical. Except in The Warblers' case, it's with pale skin and brown hair. Final score: 8/10
Stacey Evans - Also, starts at a 10/10. Stacy is a beautiful goddess, a queen, an angel. She looks like the live-action Rapunzel, with her biggo eyes, blonde hair, and cute lil button nose. Sometimes, when I read her posts my mind gives her a Russian accent for some reason. I'm not sure if it's a bad thing, but I can't think of a reason it would be a good thing. So, she loses half a point. I recognize that this is on me, and not her, but this ranking is based on my perspective of her. That being said. She instantly became hotter to me the second she offered to buy me Taco Bell, so she gets two points. Final score: 11.5/10

Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata)
There are (currently) four subspecies within Setophaga coronata:
Myrtle Warbler (S.c. coronata)
Audubon's Warbler (S.c. auduboni)
Black-fronted Warbler (S.c. nigrifrons)
Goldman's Warbler (S.c. goldmani)
Tumblr media
Our story (my rambling) begins with Myrtle and Audubon's Warblers being described as separate species, until a study in 1973 found evidence that the two routinely hybridized within a small strip of Western Canada. The Biological Species Concept* defines a species as any members of a population which can interbreed and create fertile offspring, and with the limited genetic evidence of the time, this concept was used to lump Myrtle and Audubon's into the Yellow-rumped Warbler. (*keep in mind there are many ways to define a species, so this single concept isnt a "be all, end all" argument)
This hybrid zone, however, is only 80 miles across, and has been shown to be stable over the past 50 years, suggesting the hybrids may not be as viable as previously thought. This, coupled with a new and overwhelming comparison between the birds' genomes, suggests that Myrtle and Audubon's Warblers are indeed separate species.
So the story goes back even further, because this story is really about bird populations and not our human ability to categorize them. The most likely situation is that the Myrtle Warbler was separated from the other three forms of the species during the Pleistocene glaciation, over the last million years or so. This pattern can also be seen in other "paired" species from East to West, such as Baltimore and Bullock's Orioles, or Rose-breasted and Black-headed Grosbeaks. The glaciers cut off the breeding population of Myrtle Warblers, and only after their receding could they move West to meet in the middle again.
In an interesting twist, the leading idea is that Audubon's Warbler is not only a separate species, but is actually a hybrid species which arose from Myrtle meeting the Black-fronted Warbler once it expanded back West. This hypothesis is supported by mitochondrial DNA of a sedentary population of Audubon's being very similar to Black-fronted, rather than to Myrtle Warblers. There needs to be more study into the genomics of these birds to confirm whether or not Audubon's would stand as it's own species, or if it and Black-fronted are more closely related.
Off to the side of all this is Goldman's Warbler, which makes sense when you take a look at the breeding range of these warblers. Black-fronted and Goldman's Warbler are both non-migratory birds, and the population of Goldman's Warbler is located almost entirely in Guatemala, with possible populations to the west in Chiapas, Mexico. In the same genomics study above, Goldman's Warbler stood out as unique when compared to both Myrtle and Audubon's DNA.
Tumblr media
To sum this up: more study is needed between Myrtle, Audubon's, and Black-fronted to confirm previous findings, but a three-way species split from this single species seems to be supported. The International Ornithological Congress (IOS) has already done so, splitting Yellow-rumped Warbler into Myrtle, Audubon's (with Black-fronted as a subspecies), and Goldman's Warbler.
While we're on the topic- hybridization between Setophaga warblers is not unheard of, and Yellow-rumped Warbler has multiple documented hybrids in the Macaulay library. I won't post all the pictures, but the best are linked as follows: Cape May, Magnolia, Palm, Yellow-throated, Grace's, Townsend's, Hermit, Black-throated Green). Other than it's own species-complex, Yellow-rumps are most closely related to Yellow-throated and Bahama Warbler.

Four And Four
Volume 1: Fantine; Book 3: In The Year 1817; Chapter 3: Four And Four
It is hard nowadays to picture to one’s self what a pleasure-trip of students and grisettes to the country was like, forty-five years ago. The suburbs of Paris are no longer the same; the physiognomy of what may be called circumparisian life has changed completely in the last half-century; where there was the cuckoo, there is the railway car; where there was a tender-boat, there is now the steamboat; people speak of Fécamp nowadays as they spoke of Saint-Cloud in those days. The Paris of 1862 is a city which has France for its outskirts.
The four couples conscientiously went through with all the country follies possible at that time. The vacation was beginning, and it was a warm, bright, summer day. On the preceding day, Favourite, the only one who knew how to write, had written the following to Tholomyès in the name of the four: “It is a good hour to emerge from happiness.” That is why they rose at five o’clock in the morning. Then they went to Saint-Cloud by the coach, looked at the dry cascade and exclaimed, “This must be very beautiful when there is water!” They breakfasted at the Tête-Noir, where Castaing had not yet been; they treated themselves to a game of ring-throwing under the quincunx of trees of the grand fountain; they ascended Diogenes’ lantern, they gambled for macaroons at the roulette establishment of the Pont de Sèvres, picked bouquets at Pateaux, bought reed-pipes at Neuilly, ate apple tarts everywhere, and were perfectly happy.
The young girls rustled and chatted like warblers escaped from their cage. It was a perfect delirium. From time to time they bestowed little taps on the young men. Matutinal intoxication of life! adorable years! the wings of the dragonfly quiver. Oh, whoever you may be, do you not remember? Have you rambled through the brushwood, holding aside the branches, on account of the charming head which is coming on behind you? Have you slid, laughing, down a slope all wet with rain, with a beloved woman holding your hand, and crying, “Ah, my new boots! what a state they are in!”
Let us say at once that that merry obstacle, a shower, was lacking in the case of this good-humored party, although Favourite had said as they set out, with a magisterial and maternal tone, “The slugs are crawling in the paths,—a sign of rain, children.”
All four were madly pretty. A good old classic poet, then famous, a good fellow who had an Éléonore, M. le Chevalier de Labouisse, as he strolled that day beneath the chestnut-trees of Saint-Cloud, saw them pass about ten o’clock in the morning, and exclaimed, “There is one too many of them,” as he thought of the Graces. Favourite, Blachevelle’s friend, the one aged three and twenty, the old one, ran on in front under the great green boughs, jumped the ditches, stalked distractedly over bushes, and presided over this merry-making with the spirit of a young female faun. Zéphine and Dahlia, whom chance had made beautiful in such a way that they set each off when they were together, and completed each other, never left each other, more from an instinct of coquetry than from friendship, and clinging to each other, they assumed English poses; the first keepsakes had just made their appearance, melancholy was dawning for women, as later on, Byronism dawned for men; and the hair of the tender sex began to droop dolefully. Zéphine and Dahlia had their hair dressed in rolls. Listolier and Fameuil, who were engaged in discussing their professors, explained to Fantine the difference that existed between M. Delvincourt and M. Blondeau.
Blachevelle seemed to have been created expressly to carry Favourite’s single-bordered, imitation India shawl of Ternaux’s manufacture, on his arm on Sundays.
Tholomyès followed, dominating the group. He was very gay, but one felt the force of government in him; there was dictation in his joviality; his principal ornament was a pair of trousers of elephant-leg pattern of nankeen, with straps of braided copper wire; he carried a stout rattan worth two hundred francs in his hand, and, as he treated himself to everything, a strange thing called a cigar in his mouth. Nothing was sacred to him; he smoked.
“That Tholomyès is astounding!” said the others, with veneration. “What trousers! What energy!”
As for Fantine, she was a joy to behold. Her splendid teeth had evidently received an office from God,—laughter. She preferred to carry her little hat of sewed straw, with its long white strings, in her hand rather than on her head. Her thick blond hair, which was inclined to wave, and which easily uncoiled, and which it was necessary to fasten up incessantly, seemed made for the flight of Galatea under the willows. Her rosy lips babbled enchantingly. The corners of her mouth voluptuously turned up, as in the antique masks of Erigone, had an air of encouraging the audacious; but her long, shadowy lashes drooped discreetly over the jollity of the lower part of the face as though to call a halt. There was something indescribably harmonious and striking about her entire dress. She wore a gown of mauve barège, little reddish brown buskins, whose ribbons traced an X on her fine, white, open-worked stockings, and that sort of muslin spencer, a Marseilles invention, whose name, canezou, a corruption of the words quinze août, pronounced after the fashion of the Canebière, signifies fine weather, heat, and midday. The three others, less timid, as we have already said, wore low-necked dresses without disguise, which in summer, beneath flower-adorned hats, are very graceful and enticing; but by the side of these audacious outfits, blond Fantine’s canezou, with its transparencies, its indiscretion, and its reticence, concealing and displaying at one and the same time, seemed an alluring godsend of decency, and the famous Court of Love, presided over by the Vicomtesse de Cette, with the sea-green eyes, would, perhaps, have awarded the prize for coquetry to this canezou, in the contest for the prize of modesty. The most ingenious is, at times, the wisest. This does happen.
Brilliant of face, delicate of profile, with eyes of a deep blue, heavy lids, feet arched and small, wrists and ankles admirably formed, a white skin which, here and there allowed the azure branching of the veins to be seen, joy, a cheek that was young and fresh, the robust throat of the Juno of Ægina, a strong and supple nape of the neck, shoulders modelled as though by Coustou, with a voluptuous dimple in the middle, visible through the muslin; a gayety cooled by dreaminess; sculptural and exquisite—such was Fantine; and beneath these feminine adornments and these ribbons one could divine a statue, and in that statue a soul.
Fantine was beautiful, without being too conscious of it. Those rare dreamers, mysterious priests of the beautiful who silently confront everything with perfection, would have caught a glimpse in this little working-woman, through the transparency of her Parisian grace, of the ancient sacred euphony. This daughter of the shadows was thoroughbred. She was beautiful in the two ways—style and rhythm. Style is the form of the ideal; rhythm is its movement.
We have said that Fantine was joy; she was also modesty.
To an observer who studied her attentively, that which breathed from her athwart all the intoxication of her age, the season, and her love affair, was an invincible expression of reserve and modesty. She remained a little astonished. This chaste astonishment is the shade of difference which separates Psyche from Venus. Fantine had the long, white, fine fingers of the vestal virgin who stirs the ashes of the sacred fire with a golden pin. Although she would have refused nothing to Tholomyès, as we shall have more than ample opportunity to see, her face in repose was supremely virginal; a sort of serious and almost austere dignity suddenly overwhelmed her at certain times, and there was nothing more singular and disturbing than to see gayety become so suddenly extinct there, and meditation succeed to cheerfulness without any transition state. This sudden and sometimes severely accentuated gravity resembled the disdain of a goddess. Her brow, her nose, her chin, presented that equilibrium of outline which is quite distinct from equilibrium of proportion, and from which harmony of countenance results; in the very characteristic interval which separates the base of the nose from the upper lip, she had that imperceptible and charming fold, a mysterious sign of chastity, which makes Barberousse fall in love with a Diana found in the treasures of Iconia.
Love is a fault; so be it. Fantine was innocence floating high over fault.

Tumblr media
" i wasn't aware , " hishima counters, his voice bland, maintaining the mask of seemingly imperturbable composure even in the wake of ume's naked shock . gently lifting a gloved hand , hishima turns the screen of his phone to face his conductor ---  the unread number beside the messaging app icon is staggering , a graveyard of neglected communications buried in the device . " NEVERTHELESS , ” he adds , “ when your usual punctuality failed , i began to suspect there was reason for your delay . "
in ume's absence , hishima had meandered between lumine 2's shops in an accustomed solitude , looking often but buying little , & after two hours has only a small bag embossed with pavo real's strong serifs to show for it .
a small shrug graces his narrow shoulders as he stashes away his phone once more , MESSAGES DAMNED TO GO UNREAD . " if it were dire , i expected you would send a warbler . "

Top 100 Ladies of TV
Looking at old blog posts, many years ago I did a "100 favorite female characters" list, but I have met so many wonderful new ladies now that it is quite out of date and needs a major update to accommodate them. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to do so!
Only this time I'm restricting it to TV characters, or I will die of Overwhelm.
NOTE: This list is not in any kind of order, I just wrote them down as they came to mind. I considered alphabetical, but found it was nicer to keep everyone from a given show together. And rather than starting from scratch, I kept as much of the original list as I could and just added newer favorites on at the end, if you're wondering why some of these Very Old Fandoms are clustered at the top.
