“I hope someone in your life is reading you the appreciative tweets.”
“‘Flying into the cunt-agon.’ Yes. I don't have Twitter, but I've been sent a lot of things. Nothing makes me happier when I have moments where I feel like, Oh my God, this is so hard, and this is such a weird machine that you get thrown into. There are inevitably these lows. So when I open my phone, and I read some of those stories, it simply brings me to life.” - Greta Lee

Is LYLA’s Design Based On Xina?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you read Miguel’s 90’s comics, the answer is an obvious yes. However, a lot is left unknown about what aspects of Miguel’s comics will be adapted, causing SV LYLA’s origins to be up to speculation. However, I think LYLA’s design in the SV films provides evidence that she is based on Xina, Miguel’s ex-girlfriend and childhood best friend.
Starting off are LYLA’s heart-shaped sunglasses, while a quirky detail, could also hint at Miguel’s lingering feelings for Xina, as hearts usually have a romantic connotation to them. Sunglasses also play a prominent role in Miguel’s comics, where he would frequently wear them to both protect his eyes from light and conceal his Spider identity, since their redness indicates his powers. In a way, Miguel’s sunglasses symbolize him shielding his true self (the combination of his Spider and personal identities) from the world, considering how the eyes are often referred as windows to the soul. However, when it comes to LYLA’s sunglasses, the opposite effect is created because with them being heart-shaped, they serve as a projection of Miguel’s inner desires to be with Xina again. There’s also how the ATSV art book states that Miguel is the one who programmed Lyla, which could indicate that on a subconscious level, Miguel knows he can’t escape his romantic feelings for Xina or the presence she had on his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the 90’s comics, LYLA was programmed by Xina and her design is based on Marilyn Monroe (shown left), Xina’s favorite 20th century actress who she believes she resembles as they’re both “gorgeous and brainy.” While a lot of this original design is lost, likely due to how out of place a Marilyn Monroe look-alike would be without that context (the SV films aren’t Clone High), Marilyn’s influence remains. This is indicated by LYLA’s fur coat, since furs were used as a fashion staple for many Old Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe. Though with LYLA’s coat being oversized, making her toe the line between goofy and glamorous, it extenuates her playfulness and eccentricity, a staple of Xina’s personality. Plus, the brainy aspect remains intact as LYLA is described to have the intelligence of a super computer who’s advanced enough to create her own personality and Marilyn herself used her own intellect to curate her public image and become an enigma in pop culture. In that respect, if SV LYLA were to be based on Xina then her absence in these films and mainstream knowledge on Spider-Man 2099 makes Xina an enigma as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LYLA’s design change for the SV films will likely be the design used for her future iterations as seen in her design for sm2099’s 2019 comics (shown left), which were released a year after ITSV. Granted, there is speculation that SV LYLA’s design could based on Dana D’Angelo because of how Lyla has a similar hairstyle to her and how Dana is Miguel’s love interest for the 2019 comics. While Xina and Dana are important women in Miguel’s life, especially in the 90’s comics, Xina is more likely to be the main inspiration based on what SV LYLA is programmed for. The ATSV art book states that LYLA acts as Miguel’s “only friend in the world” and is meant to keep Miguel in check when he oversteps his boundaries. Even though Dana was Miguel’s fiancée, she never seemed to really connect or keep him in check the same way Xina did. After all, Xina was Miguel’s only friend growing up, along with consistently challenging Miguel to do the right thing even when he believed it wasn’t possible. There’s also how SV LYLA is designed after her VA, Greta Lee, who is of East Asian descent like Xina, whereas Dana is white. While Xina and Greta’s specific ethnicities differ, the former is Chinese and the latter is Korean, it’s mostly a moot point as Miguel is Mexican-Irish, but his VA is Óscar Issac who is Guatemalan-Cuban. Plus, with the character designs for ATSV emphasizing their racial and ethnic backgrounds, poignantly so for Miguel, there’s a chance that LYLA intentionally looks East Asian to allude to both Greta and Xina’s ancestry. While LYLA was programmed by Xina in the 90’s comics, the ATSV art book reveals that Miguel programmed her in this iteration. This change is particularly interesting because if LYLA is based on Xina then LYLA is shaped by Miguel’s perception of his past flame, essentially making Xina his muse. There’s also how this changes LYLA’s role as the connector between Xina and Miguel, even when they’re separated. While Xina creating LYLA serves as her way of looking after Miguel and shows how much she wants to be in his life, Miguel creating LYLA serves as his way of preserving his memory of Xina and demonstrates how much he wants her in his life. Admittedly, there isn’t much in text evidence from the films that confirms this theory and SV LYLA doesn’t even resemble Xina’s look from the comics, other than them both being East Asian. However, LYLA’s original Marilyn Monroe design does not resemble Xina either, but she still represents Xina’s presence. In the end, this theory relies on the premise that Miguel is projecting his lingering feelings towards Xina onto LYLA and it’s reflected in her design, along with how LYLA reminds Miguel of the various roles Xina played in his life. Whether it’d be an equal. A mystery. A regret. A lover. A friend. It all becomes more tragic if Miguel’s story in the SV films acts as a continuation of his 90’s comics. At the end of this run, Xina who is overwhelmed by guilt and grief over Dana’s death, leaves Nueva York and Miguel, potentially for good. Thusly, it leads to Miguel’s current position in the SV films where he believes that she will never come back and that LYLA is the only form of connection he has left with Xina.

THE AARONS 2023 - Best Film Performance
I’m told the recipients of this award totally would have accepted them in person this year if not for the actors’ strike. What about next year, you say? Oh, uh, well, you see, they may be preparing for their next strike. Here is The Aaron for Best Film Performance:
Tumblr media
WINNER: Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer - Oppenheimer
Tumblr media
Throughout his career, Murphy has been rightfully acclaimed for his ability to fully immerse himself in his roles; now, he has become Death, Destroyer of Worlds. To convey the unfathomable nature of its wide-ranging events, Oppenheimer traps viewers in the haunted headspace of the eponymous scientist. Murphy’s brilliant embodiment of the intellectual traces his obsession with accomplishment through to its harrowing aftermath. A scarecrow could scarcely look more gaunt than the actor by the time of the film’s finale. Through the subtle reactions in Murphy’s eyes, one can plainly see the horrific chain of events that Oppenheimer feared he brought to fruition.
Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Lily Gladstone as Mollie Burkhart - Killers of the Flower Moon
The wealth of talents possessed by the Certain Woman star reached full bloom with Flower.
Tumblr media
Margot Robbie as Barbie - Barbie
Equal parts perky and percipient, Robbie’s rendition of the iconic doll will leave viewers tickled pink.
Tumblr media
Greta Lee as Nora - Past Lives
Lee leaves a lot unspoken as the loving lead; her nuances as Nora puts her in full control of Lives.
Tumblr media
Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich - The Iron Claw
Efron’s heartbreaking portrayal of a man wrestling with unthinkable pain is the strongest in the actor’s body of work.

does anyone else think paige has been using the boys to gain fame. i know she was a fan before she became their photographer, she’s obviously enjoyed egging everyone on thinking that her and josh dated. now she’s meeting celebrities because of them when in reality her mid photos wouldn’t ever get this type of attention
As usual, you guys are just making random assumptions about stuff you don't know anything about simply because you're delusional and hate seeing women who aren't you being connected to them in any way. First of all, I encourage you to go through Paige's instagram profile or her website- Homegirl was already photographing huge musical icons like JACK WHITE, DOJA CAT and HARRY STYLES before she even met Greta Van Fleet. GVF is not a worldwide phenomenon, they're a moderately-known band, and they were even less known years ago when she met them. So the fact that you think she was leeching off of them when she had already photographed freaking Doja Cat is laughable. Also, I just wanna point out that if her pictures were actually mid, she wouldn't have been hired to photograph the celebrities I mentioned above.
Lastly, part of the reason why Paige, Anna Lee, their makeup artist, Hannah, the girl who appeared in the MTM video and literally all the other women who work with them get so much attention is because you can't keep their names out your mouths, they all live rent-free in your heads, your obsessed with knowing every single detail about them for no reason. It's so unbelievably pathetic and lowkey misogynistic that you all constantly feel the need to put other women down simply because they somehow got opportunities y'all wish you had. Seriously, just say "Ugh, I'm bitter and I wish I were her" and move on, it'd be far easier.

Five things we learned from our In Conversation video chat with Evanescence’s Amy Lee
The long-running band's frontwoman talks longevity, standing up for what you believe in and Evanescence's jam-packed 2023 schedule
It’s 2003: TikTok doesn’t exist, Olivia Rodrigo and Greta Thunberg have only just been born, and the airwaves are repeatedly blasting out the anthemic ‘Bring Me To Life’ from Evanescence’s debut album, ‘Fallen’. Teens are swapping Evanescence CDs in school canteens, while in the summer holidays they’ll head off to Download Festival after finishing their GCSEs to see their new heroes in action.
Fast-forward 19 years, and not much has changed: today’s teenagers are just as likely to be getting into heavy music through Evanescence as they were almost two decades ago, while frontwoman Amy Lee remains an alternative style icon. There’s even an ‘Evanescence Challenge’ on TikTok where users can see if they can remember the band’s big hits, while ‘Bring Me To Life’ has been used on the app over 220,000 times.
With Evanescence as relevant as ever, it’s an apt time for NME to be catching up with Lee. Speaking before the band’s recent show at London’s The O2 (part of their co-headline tour with Within Temptation), the frontwoman is in good spirits and excited for the future. For the past year she’s been on the road, and the novelty of being back on stage after being cooped up in lockdown still hasn’t worn off. “I’m so grateful for what I get to do for a living,” she reflects. “I can’t say we weren’t grateful before, but after having that time where we didn’t know if or when we’d ever be able to do it again, we’re all so thrilled to be back on stage and to have this whole new album.”
That album is ‘The Bitter Truth’, the band’s fifth record that dropped in early 2021. Like their self-titled 2011 record it was produced by rock heavyweight Nick Raskulinecz, whose credits also include Stone Sour, Foo Fighters and Ghost. Lee’s ice-clear vocals still lead Evanescence’s bombastic sound, and while the lyrics have a more mature edge that touch on political unrest and break-ups, all the classic Evanescence ingredients are still there: glimpses of Lee’s classical piano training, hard-edged guitars and melancholy balladry.
For the latest instalment of our In Conversation series, Lee discusses Evanescence’s longevity, the power of collaboration and the band’s big plans for 2023.
Evanescence’s new bassist Emma Anzai is the right person for the job
Earlier this year Evanescence parted company with guitarist Jen Majura, who had been in the band since 2015. Majura said that her departure was “not my decision” and later added: “I’m hurt and still in this blurry confusion of what just happened.”
Long-serving bassist Tim McCord has since stepped up to take on guitar duties, while Lee has remained diplomatic about the situation in subsequent interviews. During our interview, she heaps praise on the band’s new bassist Emma Anzai. “Emma [and I] have known each other for many years: I think we met in 2005 or 2006. She’s wonderful, she’s an excellent musician and we’re good friends. She’s just fit right in like she’s always been there.”
Veridia’s Deena Jakoub was crucial in writing Evanescence’s ‘Use My Voice’
As well as counting Anzai as an old friend, Lee is also good pals with Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale and Veridia vocalist Deena Jakoub. Given that they all are based in Nashville, Lee was able to call on both musicians to help finish ‘The Bitter Truth’ single ‘Use My Voice’.
“I had Deena come over, and we’re showing each other ideas. I was like: ‘I love this song, but I can’t figure out what to do for the chorus’,” she recalls. “I thought it might be a solo song or something else. Then she just had this idea for the chorus, and helped write it. It opened the whole thing up, the idea of all the girls singing.”
Other musicians are friends, not foes
While women in the rock world can find themselves being compared and tokenised in the media, Lee says that her friendships with Hale and Jakoub are emblematic of her feelings towards women in the alternative community: they’re compatriots, not competition.
“A lot of us are a tight circle, because there are fewer of us and we want to support each other,” she says. “We want to see each other do well, and I’m a firm believer in that the more of us there are, the more of us there will be.”
Tumblr media
Want to see something change in the world? Then speak up
Back in 2020, Evanescence teamed up with the voter registration organisation HeadCount to encourage people in the US to register to vote, with ‘Use My Voice’ played in the campaign video. Lee hasn’t publicly expressed her political allegiance, but was surprised to find that her declaration that voting is important was perceived by some as being political in itself.
“I find it fascinating that it can even be a political statement to say to vote,” she tells NME. “Over the past few years, especially in my country, everything has been politicised to the point that we all need to stand together and use our voice. I’m not telling you what to believe, just to get out there. I believe that if everybody voted, we’d have better leaders. There are very clear rights and wrongs out there.”
Evanescence aren’t taking a break any time soon
You’d think that after a year spent on the road, Evanescence would want to take a breather – but they have no intention of slowing down any time soon. As well as being announced for Download 2023 and “some other cool festivals”, the band have also booked a tour with Muse. “I’m so excited about that,” Lee says about the prospect of touring with Matt Bellamy and co. “I wasn’t looking to book that one, but when Muse ask you…”
Making music together has also taken on an extra sense of wonder post-COVID, Lee adds. “Making the album was very cathartic for us, because all of us at the time [of COVID] felt like we had no control, and didn’t know what was going to happen.” When restrictions eased and Evanescence could finally get back in the studio, “it was so good for our souls. We had so much to say and talk about.” As for whether they’ll return to the studio soon, Lee hints: “I try not to make too many concrete plans – it just happens. When you sit at the piano and just let it happen. But yeah, I want to make new music with this cool new energy we have with the band.”
