lie by luka: (also made by vocacircus im telling you!!) this one is heartbreak packed into a song. one sided love hurts, breakups hurt (apparently lol and i got to feel the extent of it thru this song) and the lyrics punch you with every word. some of my favourite heartbreak lyrics. reboot with miku, luka, and zimi: this one wrecked me after my first watch and listen. it's about three friends who drift apart after a tragedy and just. the resentment and guilt shown there. and the ending just. it's such a melancholic song. the video makes me sob every time esp 3:25-3:35 if you decide to watch it!

teddy bear by rin: don't watch or listen to this is you're not okay mentally bc i wasn't when i came across it. many sad and disturbing ideations (like a ton of other vocaloid songs istg ppl create to vent) and trauma dumpings but the song is genuinely so good

#800 - Requiem (Kanaria) [Hatsune Miku]

Achievement Date: 23-07-03, Upload Date: 23-04-22

The VOCALOID version of the song originally sung by Hoshimachi Suisei. It’s a rare occurrence where I write a VTuber in a legitimate sense. I personally dislike Kanaria’s increasing use of Miku. I just like his GUMI songs more, fits his style better.

#801 - Super Nuko World (mafumafu) [IA, Kagamine Rin]

Achievement Date: 23-07-05, Upload Date: 13-12-20

IA and Rin duet is rare, and a cute VOCALOID is also uncommon, and of course it is part of mafumafu’s Nuko series, which is surprising that this is the first entry. Very much a mix of the fast-paced DnB that dominated ‘13 and the Denpa sound that is very much the backbone of Japanese internet culture. It’s a brilliant song and fun, too!

#802 - Baka (syudou) [Hatsune Miku]

Achievement Date: 23-07-08, Upload Date: 18-03-21

I think this is one of the songs that is better covered than listening to the original. Syudou tends to tune Miku very delicately, which does not fit with the overtly angry nature of the song. His tuning becomes better suited in later songs, however.

#803 - Whatever Yama Says Goes (PinocchioP) [Hatsune Miku, PinocchioP]

Achievement Date: 23-07-20, Upload Date: 18-08-20

There is this mix of anger and sadness that seems to really solidify at this time from one of the more prolific producers out there, but this song is especially angry and sad, and the producer’s own vocal only adds to the desperation and hopelessness.

#804 - Rabbit Hole (DECO*27) [Hatsune Miku]

Achievement Date: 23-07-22, Upload Date: 23-05-19

DECO*27’s 39th song on this list, a major milestone and one of the fastest of his on the list. Honestly, even with the recognition, I still think it’s underrated, mostly I think because the lyrics are extremely suggestive so there are few covers. I think there are many songs which try to mix and match, but this song play the fast pace straight, and I think I appreciate the simplicity and directness of the song. 

#805 - Scenery, Indulge in Summer (n-buna) [Hatsune Miku]

Achievement Date: 23-07-28, Upload Date: 13-08-20

What a perfect song to listen to in these current times. Another great summer song from one of the greatest summer songwriters. I’m not sure, but the song seems to be a reflective song connecting many of the other songs together. The brightness and emptiness of the song really reflects on the strengths of the producer and summer.

#806 - Mafia (wotaku) [Hatsune Miku]

Achievement Date: 23-07-29, Upload Date: 20-08-07

wotaku has finally started to rack up on this prestigious list and this might be his most famous song. One that basically exemplifies his style, although the producer moved onto different sounds. If you encountered the song through the covers, you might think Miku's light voice would not work, but I think it oddly suits well. 

#807 - -ERROR (niki) [Lily]

Achievement Date: 23-07-29, Upload Date: 10-09-13

One of the heavy favorites of cover artists and fans alike, the song took its sweet time getting onto this list. The song that brought niki into stardom and as a master of Lily. Honestly Lily almost feels too generic to really work, but I think niki uses this generic factor in two equally interesting ways, either as a background to an electronic bop or kind of a general cry for some topic, like death and dying in this song.

#808 - The Real Disappearance of Hatsune Miku (cosMo) [GUMI]

Achievement Date: 23-07-30, Upload Date: 15-07-29

What an odd song. First, this is a GUMI song, which is only the beginning of the pointed commentary in what might be one of the most direct song from the prolific produer who has been here since the very beginning. Honestly, it sounds more like a Neru/kemu song, which is kind of ironic because that particular style was fading out of fashion.

Star Lily Dance Performance (Remix) - MASA Akito and Toya Reason: I FUCKING NEED THIS. I’M FR. THIS SONG IS AMAZING. Actually yk what. This is the ONLY SONG I need in pjsk, and I need it to be Akitoya. Post canceled, top 5 reasons why this song should be added and it must be Akitoya. Number one, it’d be both a good 2dmv and a 3dmv. Number two, they would eat the song up. Number three, this song is *claps*. Number four, only normal onibi series song. Number five, gay people. Bonus: Hai hai hai azore! Hate It! Hate It! Huge Ego! - Takeaki Wada Tsukasa and Miku Reason: I love this song. SO glad they added Trash and Trash, it’s my fav from Kurage-P/Takeaki Wada. This song fits Tsukasa before the main story,, and no one should sing it but him! And Miku. 

Close and Open, Demons and the Dead - HACHI Emu, Tsukasa, Rui, Nene, and Miku Reason: OKAY, I AM NORMAL ABOUT THIS. We need the Hachi song. Yes, we. They would all sing it. It would be amazing. This is my second wanted, first being Star Lily Dance Performance. It'd be soo funny and kinda dark, they would eat the 3dmv like always. !!! Yeah.

Hole Dwelling - Kikuo Emu, Tsukasa, Rui, and Nene Reason: This song is so dark and weird, it’s so WxS. I don’t want a virtual singer to sing with them, this would just be them.

The Chattering Lack of Common Sense - Ghost Rui and Nene  Reason: They fit the roles, and they both speak english!!! Unlike Tsukasa and Emu lolz. I love Ghost’s songs.

Disappearance Addiction (MARETU remix) - Kairiki Bear Mizuki and Mafuyu Reason: I LOVE IT WHEN MIZUMAFU SINGS TOGETHER. THEY BOTH SOUND SO AMAZING. Venom was so real, now we must have DA, but the Maretu Remix is so yooo.

The Snow White Princess Is - Noboru-P Kanade, Mafuyu, Ena, Mizuki, and Miku Reason: Yeah. They should all sing this! It’d be cool. So true.

Yes I took some time answering this because I want to get it right -

So of course I have to start with Len - my

favourite Len song is Runaway Love Song by LeleleP.

For Rin right now it is Vale by Wonderful★Opportunity! (my joint favourite producer ehe~).

Hmmm Fukase would be Revolution! by Mcki Robyn's-P, or C&C by corasundae. Depends on the day.

For Miku it'd be Look This Way, Baby by ryo (does anybody else remember the projsct diva opening with it?? aa), OR Digital Girl by KIRA, also depends on the day.

Piko would be Boku No Mono by Circus-P.

For Flower it'd be Lower (One's Eyes), thank you project sekai for that one. Sekai aside, anything by Ghost.

Gumi would have to be Platonic Girl by Mikito-P by faaarr, I love that song So Much. Second place goes to Crystalline by Circrush for nostalgia purposes.

Although I don't listen to as much Luka as I used to, I'm yet to find a song with her I don't like... So uh everything? Eheh?

I love anything Circus-P uses Kaito or Dex for, it's immediately a banger. (Really making myself look like a mega Circus fan, what can I say? He makes bops).

Extra for Dex; Honey, I'm Home by Ghost is the biggest bop that ever bopped.

As for Meiko I like her solos a normal amount, but I love her duet with Miku in Jitter Bug by Hachiya Nanashi. Any duet with Kaito is also immediately amazing too.

Ngl I don't have many Oliver songs I like but TVVS or Tattlers' Tall Tale are good.

Despite not using Yukari on here much and wanting to do it more, Imma include my favourite song, It's Seems There's A Cheat Code For Happiness (Or there's Supposed To Be A Cheat Code For Happiness, you get the picture).

And I feel bad for not mentioning my other favourite producer but Hitoshizuku & Yama don't have many solos.

Mellowcle - Eccentric (ft. ALLEN) [Miku ver.]

Both versions were uploaded at around the same time, but the ALLEN version wins out to me out of novelty (first original I've heard with him, and he sounds pretty good at Japanese for an EN bank) and some small things on Miku's ver I didn't like (wish she was a bit louder, especially in the rap parts imo.) Still, the tuning is fantastic on both versions (low Miku my beloved), and the song itself is groovy, so give both a listen.

Inugami - Yoiguse (ft. GUMI V6)

More V6es! First non-demo GUMI V6 I've heard. Love the slight English accent she seems to have.

halyosy - Flyway (ft. Kagamine Len, KAITO)

The NND 2023 Joke Song Festival is mostly inaccessible to me due to the language barrier, but I caught on to this one quickly due to the quality song and straightforward joke (hey what if Yukari had big tits.) Aside from Big Tits Yukari that I have very strong opinions about, it was cool to see this interesting vb ensemble and SLAVE.V-V-R's custom models for them. Wonder if they'll ever release a song with some of these vocaloids (how much do I have to pay for a SLAVE.V-V-R KAITO original.)

Just discovered this producer! Saw DOOM on the recs tab and it caught my ears immediately so I had to check out their other stuff. Interesting soundscape with a wobbly synth bass, brass instruments, and synths. Great animation too.

for real have been living under a rock all this time because I actually only really got into the vocaloid/utaite scene only about 2 years ago. I REALLY think I missed out during it's peak.

Love or hate vocaloid, you cannot ignore the herstory and impact it has on the world

The beginning of the end

I still recall in highschool some of my friends were really into it and as a matter of fact I was constantly reminded of the fucking kagamine twins just because I have a twin lmao. I thought it was all super cringe though and I would actually get creeped out if people mentioned it and shamed them for it. oh how the tables have turned.

cringe or not, it was impossible to ignore it or deny the yass slayery it has. Some songs I either pretended it sounded like shit and/or listened to in secret was:

first love academy, school of true love - rin, len and gumi (fun fact: this is the first song i ever found with gumi in it so i actually thought gumi was a man at first. Ever since then I've accepted gumi as a trans legend lmao)

it really wasn't until I discovered reol did I actually give in to it all. Initially I thought reol's voice was unbearably high and giga's intense beats hurt my brain, but luvoratory is too good to be played once and after a few thousand listens before i knew how i felt i was hooked.

things probably spiralled out of control for me with it all because fast forward to around 2019; miku expo begins and she ACTUALLY has a show in my city. I actually cop VIP TICKETS to go see her. This would've been the craziest shit ever to ever happen to me if it didn't get cancelled because of covid aadjasdsaldlaakl it was supposed to be my first concert too. (on a slightly lighter note; I got tickets a little while ago to go see gumi live in my city!!!!!!!!!)

thoughts on the genre as a whole

I think the most irresistible thing about the whole vocaloid/utaite genre to me is there is no consistent genre to it. It works so well with my personal philosophy of having no favorite music genre of course I have to be so invested in it.

FAVORITE VOICE BANKS

I really want to say it's Rin Kagamine because I'm delusional as fuck and think we're the same person and most of the vocaloid songs i listen to happen to use her vocals. Some years ago during a very boring and so forgettable con I cannot remember what it was called, i was just sitting idly by my table as my friend played songs a little on their speaker. One of the songs they played was Meltdown by iroha and ever since then I can't stop playing it almost every single day and everytime even the slightest inconvenience happens to me; I will blare this song so loud in frusturation.

Vflower is somewhere way up there with fav vocaloids. VERY unique sounding voice and I really like how producers are able to tune her very differently from each other. She's really dominating the scene lately and at this point its IMPOSSIBLE to ignore her. which is exactly why I'm so aggravated at companies and such for not letting her play live or even put her in fucking project sekai!!!!!!! how the fuck are you gonna keep putting her songs in it but not have her in it! i don't care if she's not in the same company theres no way you don't have the money to do it!!!!!!!!

i feel like there isn't a lot of songs by Gumi by herself; i really wish there were more bangers for her. She duets extremely well with mostly rin or miku though. Her voice provider is half-filipino therfor gumi is half-filipino and my only representation in this awful world so i really like her. Very nice sounding voice, theres a lot of opportunity to use her for most things really. I have the exact same issue as i do with vflower, PUT HER IN PROJECT SEKAI AND LET HER DO MORE CONCERTS YOU COWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Megurine Luka has the most prettiest sounding voice for sure. I would group her in my top 3 vocaloids in no particular order with vflower and rin. LOTS of nice range and there isn't much to say i can say other than shes a fucking legend and she's kind of sexy lmao.

THERE REALLY IS NO SONGS FOR MEIKO AND IT FUCKING SUCKS CAUSE SHE HAS SO MUCH UNTAPPED POTENTIAL. Very nice almost silkyish mature sounding voice. Personally i think no one knows how to harness her voice the best than oster project. Maybe it's just because they're the only producer who makes shit for her, but I feel like maybe meiko's voice is best used in dramatic type songs with lots of classic instruments. I'm actually angry at the world for not producing her enough my god

Ms Hatsune Miku; what can i really say except she's literally the bitch of all time. Obviously the vocaloid with the most impact for sure with what i would say is the most balanced type of voice from all the voice banks which gives her lots of opportunity to do literally any song which is exactly why she has so much motherfucking power.

SO my fav producers are giga and kira bc they are the most Stimmable in my opinion. ofc "getcha" is a big fav gumi/miku song of mine AKSKSJ i also like "bring it on," "masked bitch," and the giga remix of "electric angel" ft. the kagamines!! as for kira, i love "digital girl," "riding with u," "i do what i want," and "monster"!!!

mitchie m is also a big fav of mine!! i rly like "seraphim on the ring," "ohedo julia night," and "freely tomorrow"!! i have a lot of nostalgia for freely tomorrow bc it was one of the first miku songs i heard 💖💖💖

as for miscellaneous songs i associate w specific vocas, one miku song i rly like is "magical doctor" by maretu which is. VERY fucky wucky but thats why i like it akskskd
