i was looking into getting into dq1 just the other day, but couldn't decide between the nes or gbc version, do you have any thoughts on that?
I’ve beaten every version of the game, so I can give a good overview of what makes certain versions different.
The GBC version is nearly identical to the SNES version which made a lot of improvements like massively toning down the grinding in the game by making it easier to level up and buy gear from shops.
The chests also have better rewards and you can get “seeds” that increase your stats when consumed (if you want the best gains from seeds, look up what the highest boost you can get from them is, have the king save your game, reload, and consume a seed. If it’s not the best boost, reload and try again. If it is the best boost, save your game and keep doing that if you have more seeds).
The GBC version also has a cutscene at the beginning of the game that isn’t present in any other version.
The NES version is significantly harder and more grindy. For each version of the game, it’s basically unbeatable until you reach a certain level in the game and learn the best healing spell because otherwise you can’t last long enough against the final boss. In the NES version, you definitely won’t get to that level naturally. When I played it, I remember just grinding for a WHILE until I got to the level where I learned that spell (I would say it took a couple hours but it’s been so long since I played it that I can’t remember exactly how long it took).
I think the NES version is worth playing, being the game that invented the JRPG, but if that kind of grinding doesn’t sound appealing, then I’d recommend playing one of the remakes and checking out the NES version when you feel like playing it again (it’s a short game, so it’s fun to revisit every now and again).
It also has the characters speak in Shakespearean English, which has been a defining characteristic in localizing the characters from that game ever since. The GBC version is the exception because the script isn’t really based on the NES version at all. It’s more similar to the Japanese version (Roto is Loto instead of Erdrick, Rora is Lora instead of Gwaelin). The SNES version is fan-translated from the SFC release since it never got an official English release.
There’s also the mobile and Switch versions, which are similar in design to the SNES version with graphical overhauls and a script that’s more of an improved version of the NES script.
The GBC and SNES remakes are two-in-one games that also include remakes of DQ2. The same differences apply to that one.
That was a bit long, but I didn’t want to outright say I prefer any of five versions over the others because many Dragon Quest games have different versions (4 has NES, PS1, DS, mobile, 5 has SFC, PS2, DS, mobile, 7 has PS1, mobile, and 3DS to name a few) and I think it’s really up to the player to decide which version they want to play.
I said I started with the GBC version, but I lost the save file before I could finish it so the first version I actually finished was the NES version and I actually really liked experiencing it that way because completing it felt rewarding. But I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as anyone’s first unless they’re ready to put up with the grinding.
Hope you have fun with it, whichever version you play!

❝ i see you’re still among the living. ❞ — @griefsung.
are they? atanfirí wonders. indeed, did the gift of death ever live? were they meant to? perhaps the tragedies they face are not part of the grand design they are meant for, but a result of them. no answer satisfies these questions of theirs, but it is worth noting that they (alongside Man) persevere still.
they know what the elf means by the comment. with a brief smile, the maia turns their attention back on the sea. facing west, by pure coincidence.
❛ delighted to see you've retained some sense of humor, gwaelin. i'll not bore you with the details of maiar conflicts, but i'm far more welcome on these shores than farther east as of late. ❜ they rest an arm on the stone ridges separating them both from a steep fall into crashing waves below. ❛ though, my presence here is hardly noteworthy. have you graced this island for something in particular? ❜

A collection of seventeen princesses and girlfriends whose kidnappings set off the plot for various classic video games to observe the tropes:
Pink is the most common clothing color, closely followed by red and purple
I went into this expecting mostly blondes but actually there’s just as many redheads
I know their names weren’t super important aspects of gameplay but @ Capcom’s Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins: you seriously named her “Princess Prin-Prin”??? Most of the rest are just random non-made-up girls’ names but you couldn’t even name her Elisa or Sue or Annabella or anything, just “Prin-Prin”. Top: Pauline, Annabelle, Jennifer, Madonna, Marian, Jessica, Peach/Toadstool; middle: Gwaelin, Sherry, Silvia, Zelda, Prin-Prin; bottom: Paula, Tawna, Maria, What’s-Her-Name, Amy(-Rose), Zelda again

A fun thing you can do in the first Dragon Quest is take Princess Gwaelin to an inn after you save her from the Green Dragon and are carrying back to the castle. If you do, this exchange with the innkeeper happens.

For comparison, this is what normally happens when you sleep at an inn.

It’s just one of the things that gives the original Dragon Quest its own charm.

Summary: Hooray for awkward hot spring hijinx!
Gwaelin knew she was staring, but she couldn't look away. How beautiful he was to look upon, prettier than a painting, realer than a statue. Not because he was perfect, but because he was imperfect: the map of his scars a reminder of his failings, and his determination to go on despite them. Impossible Alef hadn't started out impossible. He'd made mistakes. He'd been just a boy, once. He'd been an infant, just like her.
Their eyes met, and Alef's slid away almost at once. Chin averted, he said nothing as he slipped into the waters before removing his towel, replacing the sopping cloth on the stones.
That's when Gwaelin was hit with the folly of her plan: Now he was naked, too. Under the water, neither of them were wearing any clothes.
Meaning, somewhere down there he was just… bobbing about, like a fishing lure. All she'd have to do was look down, and there would be no secrets anymore; everything would be laid bare between them.
Don't look down, she thought.
