the most 2023 Millennial content is going from worrying about the environmental apocalypse, to announcing a pregnancy, to hoping the kid is trans because the IVF only delivered boys

Keep Your Friends Close, and Your Frenemies Closer
Podcasts are the modern version of talk radio. People don’t have to tune in at a specific time and are less constrained by a network’s rules and regulations. Podcasts come in such a wide variety of genres and themes it is easy to find something that fits your interests. One podcast channel I have been watching for a long time was started by a Youtube couple named Ethan and Hila Klein, called the H3 podcast after their Youtube channel, H3H3. This podcast was all about inviting celebrity guests and discussing things about pop culture from their own point of view. This show grew in popularity because of the dynamic between the hosts and their crew and the jokes and bits they built upon for years. Eventually, they created several other shows like H3TV and H3 After Dark in order to streamline their original podcast to focus on interviews. Eventually, they even started an entertainment political show called Leftovers featuring political commentator Hasan Piker.
However, no single show was quite as popular as their show named Frenemies. This show starred Ethan and YouTube personality, Trisha Paytas talking about various pop culture topics and playing various different games. They often came dressed up in crazy costumes each episode with Ethan even shaving his head to come dressed as Fester from The Addams Family. This seems like a simple concept, and it is. Less entertaining people would cause this show to flop. What made this work was the history these two people have together and the dynamic they have on camera. They had Trisha on an episode of the H3 Podcast where they got to know her zany, bubble-headed, and controversial Youtube persona. She is known for causing a significant amount of controversy and for not being the sharpest crayon in the box. They also had her on their own version of the bachelor where they tried to find a partner for Hila’s brother Moses. They ended up leaving the show and hooking up before officially getting together during the pandemic. The reason why Frenemies was so popular should be abundantly clear by now: the DRAMA.
This dynamic could not be created through traditional media sources. A figure as controversial as Trisha Paytas would not likely be the first choice as a co-host. The dynamic the two shared on-screen was also extremely volatile, with some episodes showing Ethan and Trisha getting along like they were best friends while in others they fought to the point Trisha left mid-episode. Everything was so unpredictable, no traditional media business would ever try this dynamic because it was too risky. Ethan took this risk head-on and it paid off because this show became an online cultural phenomenon. For a while. Things eventually became too volatile and Trisha left the show officially, which was followed by internet beef and drama for months afterward (which leaked into the personal lives of the hosts themselves, as by that time Trisha and Moses were engaged).
This show is something that could never be created again because of how unique and risky it was, but because of that, it would forever live on in internet history as one of the most entertaining podcasts out there.
Below is the first of many episodes where Trisha and Ethan fought and Trisha walked out.

Was anyone else left wanting more after the breath-taking glimpse into the Critical Role Land VR experience they aired before last weeks Talks Machina? Well now you can play it too! (if you have a VR headset on your PC)
Seriously though, I through this together in a couple of hours (and it shows). I love Critical Role and thought it’d be funny to recreate their pretend VR experience in actual VR
