Love Under a Starry Sky
hiya everyone just wanted to include my fics here too, starting in chronological order
Chapter 1: The Letter
Hi guys this ff was meant to be more cheerful but Aoko is a little OOC. I do promise a happy ending tho!
~ ♡ ~
Kaito was no way or form in love with his best friend. Not at all. He didn't love her cute face or messy hair. He didn't love the way she speaks or the clumsy way she walks. And he definitely didn't love her eyes, not the way they sparkled - true to her name the child of blue. Aoko Nakamori. She definitely didn't keep him up at night. Kaito knew Aoko wasn't the prettiest or most elegant girl but to him she was perfect, but his situation prevented him from telling her. Telling her she was the only one for him.
Aoko definitely loved her best friend and it scared her. He was Kaito, her silly childhood friend. The one who always looked up her skirt or was pulling mean pranks on her. However, he was always there, when she was scared or upset. Ready to hug her or to cheer her up. She liked how his arms wrapped around her and his calm voice, she really liked that part of him.
Despite her knowing him most her life, it still scares her, he's definitely hiding something - something big. whatever it is she knows she'll be hurt. That's why when she got the letter, both of them were surprised - Aoko was friendly and cute but she had never received a love letter. Reading it, Kaito felt his heart twist and he didn't like this new feeling.
_Dear Aoko Nakamori,
I think about you all the time - I don't think you hear it often enough, but you're beautiful. I have wanted to tell you this for a really long time, unfortunately I never got the chance, so I am writing to you instead.
I like you. I don't expect you to reply immediately, let's say today 22:30 on the school rooftop. I look forward to seeing you.
Your Secret Admirer.
P.S. I hope you like the gift._
It was simple enough, it was clear whoever wrote this didn't spend too much time on it but the thought was there. The paper itself was of high quality and a pretty baby blue and the gift referred to in the letter was a pair of clip on earrings - the same crystal clear blue of her eyes. The same eyes he loved staring at.
'Aoko,' he began, trying to swallow his jealousy, 'you don't plan on going do you?'
Her reply wasn't what he expected, the usually happy and lively girl he knew just looked fed up. 'Why shouldn't I?' It was barely a whisper but it scared him, Aoko was never this quiet. Something was bothering her. 'At least that way I won't be alone, plus it's not like I had anything to do anyway.'
'Alone? Aoko what do you mean?' Kaito knew that even if she was sad, she usually made an effort to sound cheerful, but she wasn't. 'Kid's heist is today, that bastard that's stealing my dad away from me, strikes again.'
'Bastard? Aoko what do you mean alone,' this was very bad, Aoko hated being alone, but she hasn't brought up the topic in a while, 'you have me, don't you?'
'Do I Kaito? Do I really? Recently you've been so distant.' She looked like she was trying hard to hold back her tears. He hated seeing her like this, but he couldn't do anything. He was that bastard, the one whose stealing her father, the reason he's been distant.
'Aoko-san?' This voice - ugh. Hakuba. Kaito turned to face the boy walking towards them, his face suggested he was worried about Aoko's demeanour, her usual smiling face covered by her hair and eyes glassed over with tears.
'Nakamori-san? What are you holding?' Akako wasn't really one to talk to Aoko without insulting her in some way, but even she sounded concerned.
'Aoko-san, if you're not feeling well you should go back home and rest.'
'That's right Nakamori-san, you should get some rest.'
Aoko mumbled something along the lines of 'okay, I might as well,' but it was hard to tell. As she walked towards the door she bumped into Keiko - one of her good friends, they talked for a little bit before Aoko walked out of the classroom and made her way out of the school.
'Shouldn't you be doing something Kuroba-kun, she is your best friend?'
'I don't think she wants to talk to me,' he began, feeling the eyes of his class land on him as Aoko left.
'Don't be ridiculous Kaito-kun, of course she wants to talk to you.'
'Keiko?'
'She's clearly upset about something and the least you could do as her best friend is try and talk to her.' He sighed, Aoko was upset about something he was a part of, he couldn't postpone today's heist without confirming Hakuba's suspicions and probably Aoko's too. The best he could do was to talk to her after school.
Today was definitely going to be busy.
Chapter 2: Talk
~ ♡ ~
The day was painfully long, Kaito couldn't listen to his teachers anymore and lunchtime was even worse. A number of students had assumed that Aoko had left that morning because of a fight they had. A number of girls from their year asked whether she had been rejected by him, to which he could only blush and deny that anything romantic had happened between them.
However the worst part of all was his own classmates asking if the love letter had been from him - idiots, he'd have done something way better than this, something way more extravagant.
He couldn't wait for this day to be over and when it did he was glad he didn't have cleaning duty. He got back home as fast as he could, ignoring his mum's questions and running to his room. He quickly changed into something more casual before, once again, running out of the room and towards the exit. His mum had other plans though. She caught him by the hood of his jacket and made him explain what happened.
'I see, Aoko-chan is upset with you in more ways than one,' she chuckled, clearly thinking about the irony that he so happens to be Kid. 'You should kiss her.'
'Kiss!?' he sputtered, his mum was known for her carefree attitude and weird personality, but that was crossing a line. 'WHAT- what do you mean kiss?'
'Ha - you thought I wouldn't notice your little crush on little Aoko-chan, you should tell her and probably kiss her too. After all when your dad kissed me I couldn't help but fall head-over-heels for him...'
Kaito had quickly sneaked away whilst his mum was stuck reminiscing about the past, kiss Aoko - ridiculous he definitely didn't like her, at least not in that way. He sighed before crossing the road to get to Aoko's place, he had been delayed too much.
Taking a deep breath, he knocked on her front door hoping she would answer and preferably not kill him. Aoko took a while to answer the door so he waited before knocking again. She was really taking her sweet time getting to the door, but before he could knock a third time she opened the door. She had clearly been crying and had probably cried herself to sleep at one point - her eyes were very puffy, her clothes, and hair was messy as if she'd been lying down.
'Kaito?' Her voice was quiet, he fought the urge to call her cute, her cute clothes and messy hair were making it really hard. However, it would probably make her more annoyed.
'Aoko can I come in?' She nodded silently and motioned him to come in.
'Why are you here Kaito? Don't you have anything to be doing right now?'
'I do, but you're more important than that,' he shot her one of his signature smirks, but she rolled her eyes and chuckled. Good - he thought - she's smiling again.
'But really why are you here?' She sunk back into the sofa and he followed.
'You weren't yourself this morning, and I guess I was worried about you,' he inched a little closer to her and nearly jumped when she turned to face him. Her face was suddenly very close to his. He was used to teasing her from a slight distance, however being this physically close made his stomach flip. He also made the mistake of glancing at her lips and his mum's words came back to him. If he leaned further in their lips would meet and they'd be kissing. Kissing Aoko, Aoko his best friend, Aoko the girl he was currently very close to. He could feel his face heat up and was slightly thankful when she buried herself in his arms so she couldn't see his face that was becoming redder.
'Um Aoko? Is everything okay?' He carefully wrapped his arms around her and tried to calm his heart down.
'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude to you this morning, I was just annoyed and took it out on you,' when she looked up, her pouting face made his heart beat way too fast. Her lips were also very close, he shook his head and pushed her away slightly. Cursing those thoughts for coming back.
'It's quite hot in here, right?' He fanned himself with his hands. Aoko looked at him with a confused face.
'I did turn up the heating because it was cold, but you're probably feeling hot because you're wearing that massive jacket of yours.' He chuckled nervously at her statement and tried to shrug off his jacket. He placed his jacket in the edge of the sofa and looked back to her, she was slightly further away from him, which was a good thing, but he suddenly missed the feeling of having her in his arms.
'So, um, you know,' he began, anxiously turning to face her.
'Yes?'
'About that..'
'About what?'
'That letter, you know the one you got this morning? Are you going to go?'
'Oh that I nearly forgot,' she got up and walked towards the chest of drawers, picking up the letter and shaking out the earrings put inside. She clipped them on as she walked towards him.
'What do you think? Aren't they pretty? I'm going to wear them when I meet whoever wrote that letter.'
'So you're really going huh?'
'Ooh are you jealous Kaito?'
'NO! Why would I be? Hah! Jealous - preposterous!' He was really sputtering now. Aoko on the other hand was laughing at the odd face he was making.
'You should see how you look right now. I'm just going to thank whoever it is, but I have someone else I like.' She giggled at his clear relief, only to be confused yet again.
'You do!? Who?'
She chuckled, 'I'm not telling you,' and walked away, leaving a very puzzled Kaito behind.
'Hey! Wait! At least tell me how you're going to get there and back!'
Aoko stopped walking away and looked at him, 'you know I haven't really thought about that.'
'Really,' he wasn't surprised, she was usually this scatterbrained.
'I can't drop you there, but I can pick you up,' he started, but quickly added that he had to do something for Jii-chan when she glared at him. 'You should bring your helmet with you, I'm taking my bike to the parlour.'
'Sure, don't be late okay?'
''Kay.' He smiled at her before leaving, it had gotten surprisingly late.
He smiled as he got onto his bike, all he had to do was complete this heist and meet her at school.
Easy.
~ ♡ ~
Chapter 3: The Heist and the Confession
10 minutes. Kaito was listening carefully to the bugs placed at the heist location. His target tonight was a sapphire, it was being bought over for an exhibition. Sadly, this was the only big jewel on display.
'Inspector Nakamori, the emergency lights have been prepped and the generator is hidden at the back of the room.'
'Good, we'll be ready for that pesky thief now.'
He breathed out, 'so that's how you want to play it.' He placed the mask of the officer on and placed another mask on top. One could never be too careful. He turned on his walkie-talkie and in Inspector Nakamori's voice told the officers he had spotted Kid in the exhibition room and for everyone to gather there.  Now the officers not in the exhibition room would rush there, allowing him to slip in.
He made his way there, ready to start the next phase of his plan.
As soon as he was there, the room was already in panic allowing him to go to the back of the room. After confirming that the generator was turned off, he tripped the switches. The room was plunged into darkness.
'TURN ON THE GENERATOR, QUICKLY!'
'But, sir...'
'NOW!'
'Sir, the generator, it's broken!'
'WHAT! SOMEONE TURN ON A LIGHT!'
'Sir! The sapphire!'
'WHAT!'
Kaito let the lights turn on, after all, what's a heist without showing off?
'Inspector Nakamori, as you can see I now have the jewel.'
'KID!'
'You really made it too easy, Inspector, that wasn't even a challenge.'
'KID HOW DARE YOU!'
'Oh calm down inspector, there's no need to shout.'
He pulled his hat further down and threw a smoke bomb, allowing him to escape on his hang glider. It was odd that the heist was too easy, there was a tracker on the fake jewel. The real one was inside the generator. He had slid the jewel into the pocket of the exhibition owner. Who was also 'sleeping' in the toilet (he disguised the officer he put to sleep as the owner). That way, they will be tricked into thinking that the Kaito Kid flying away is just a dummy (with the help of a fake propeller and some balloons). He laughed, no-one can trick someone who lies professionally.
Now to Ekoda High School.
Aoko shivered slightly as she stood on the roof of the school. It had been slightly hard work to sneak in, but that didn't really matter. This feeling was definitely liberating. The cold night air and slight wind didn't deter her. She had chosen to wear a white dress with dark blue details, to match the earrings she had been given.
She stared up at the sky, the city lights dimmed the stars but the moon was beautiful. She glanced around the night sky, hoping to catch a glimpse of Kid, she wasn't sure why she was looking for him. Maybe she just wanted to know whether he'd been caught or not. Sighing, she turned around only to be surprised by a new presence on the rooftop.
'Kid.' The Phantom Thief was standing a few feet away from her. She could see his smug smile from underneath the hat.
'Nakamori-san,' he pulled out the jewel from today's heist, 'just the person I was looking for.'
'What are you doing here?' Her happy mood has disappeared. He held the sapphire to the moonlight.
'This isn't what I'm looking for, so I'll give it to you.'
She blinked in confusion, 'me?'
'I don't doubt you Nakamori-san,' he began walking toward the end of the roof.
'Why return them? The jewels I mean?' She chuckled at his confusion as he turned around, 'you worked so hard to steal them, why not keep them?'
'It's quite simple actually,' he pulled out his hang glider, 'I don't keep what's not mine, after all I have a better sapphire.'
He stepped off the edge of the roof, flying away.
Or at least that's what it looked like. This time it really was a dummy flying away, the real Kaito had put on his black cloak and was now dangling from the side of the school. He carefully made his way down the side and changed his clothes. Now all he had to do was to appear in front of Aoko, as if nothing had happened.
He made his way to the roof.
'Aoko.' He couldn't stop the blood rushing to his face when he saw her. The faint glow of the moon made her dress light up in a way that made her look angel-like. The wind blowing through her hair only served to make her look like she came out of a fairy tale. He shook his head, now was not the time to be fawning over her.
'Kaito,' her face lit up and she waved at him.
'Aoko did you meet whoever sent the letter.'
'Oh that, no I didn't,' she shrugged and turned to look at the city skyline. 'They must've forgotten, but guess who I did meet?'
'Um, who?' He smiled at her obvious excitement.
'I'm not telling.'
'Hey.' She giggled and looked at him, pulling him into a hug. After some hesitation, he pulled her closer. He felt his heart pounding, why was he feeling this? This entire day Aoko had made him feel a real variety of emotions.
'I'm glad you came Kaito.'
'Aoko, I,' he gently pushed her away from him, so he could see her face. 'Aoko I have something to tell you.' He gulped hard, what was he trying to do, what was he going to tell her? He could always confess. Confess what? His secret life? His love for her?
Love. That was it. This whole day had really proved it.
'Kaito,' she tiptoed up to feel his forehead, 'are you okay? You're face is really red.'
'I-,' this was really bad, she was really close to him. Her lips were way too close. 'Aoko- I.'
She pushed a strand of his hair away from his face, he had to do this, 'oh spit it out.'
'I think, I want to kiss you,' he cursed at himself inwardly. He had to ask now or he wouldn't ever. The thought had been plaguing him for hours.
She looked at him with wide eyes, 'kiss?' He glanced at her lips, dammit she was definitely wearing lip gloss. He moved his hands from her shoulders down towards her waist and pulled her closer.
'When you got that letter, I was jealous. When you said you'd meet him, I was jealous. And when you were upset, I was worried. You- You've always been important to me, I guess I didn't realise it was like this. And you look so pretty right now. You've been on my mind all day and, and I-'
She had effectively silenced him. With her own lips. The kiss had only lasted mere seconds, but it was enough to shock him. He already missed the feeling of her lips on his, so he pulled her closer.
Her lips were warm as he kissed her. She tiptoed further to tangled her fingers in his hair, so he steadied her with his arms. He had thought about kissing Aoko, before, but this was new. This feeling was unbeatable.
He felt one of her hands gently stroke his face, her body rocking against his. He had stopped being able to function properly, thoughts of her consuming his mind entirely. They way she felt in his arms. The way her body fit perfectly against his. The way her lips were so soft. He felt her hands travel down to his chest and crumple his shirt.
He gently pulled away, starting to feel slightly light headed, but he kept her close.
'I love you.'
'Bakaito,' her voice was quiet. He smiled as he pressed a quick kiss to her lips.
'Ahouko.'
'Do you plan on kissing me again?' She gently tugged him down.
He chuckled before capturing her lips in another kiss.

Chapter 4: Epilogue (kinda)
~ ♡ ~
Who exactly sent the letter?
'Hakuba-kun! You said this plan would work!'
'Now Akako-san, considering Kuroba-kun, there was a chance it wouldn't.'
'Well now he has the girl and the jewel!'
'Truly unfortunate,' but he could't help but smile, they were made for each other.
Hakuba and Akako had worked together to reveal his secret and capture him (Aoko was an unfortunate addition to the plan). However, they really were unsuccessful.
~ ♡ ~
What happened to the jewel?
'Ah Kaito stop here.'
'In front of the police station, why? Did your dad forget something?'
'Ah not really,' she stopped to think a little, but she added, 'its a secret!'
Kaito could only really think one thing - God was she cute. He smiled as she walked into the, that girl was his girlfriend!
However as he was lost in thought about the idea of telling her his secret identity she came back.
'Let's go!'
'Do you want me to drop you off at your place?'
'Aren't you coming as well?'
He had to admit, when she said that he did get the wrong idea at first, but the Aoko he knew was not that bold. So he confirmed, 'for what?'
'Dinner! Obviously, I bet you didn't eat doing whatever you did with Jii-san!'
Kaito had to admit he was very hungry and he would never turn down a free meal. Especially one made by his girlfriend, it felt nice calling her that.
'It better be good!'
~ ♡ ~
What about her dad?
'I wonder what she was doing out so late with Kaito-kun.'
'Nakamori-keibu, the report on tonight.'
'Ah detective, you're dismissed, go home.'
'What about you inspector, wasn't that your daughter?' He stood up and walked to the window in his office. He could see Kaito and Aoko drive off towards their house.
'Nah, I'll give them sometime.'

The Magician of The Beautiful Paris Sky
Kaito Kid is back to stealing... but this time in Paris, the city of Ladybug and Cat Noir!...🐞🐾This time Kid seeks the sparkling jewel of the sky💎✨ in the Paris Museum, guarded by Japanese police, Will Kaito Kid face Ladybug and Cat Noir? And What will Hawkmoth and Conan do? This is what you will know in our new story! 🐾
(There may be some errors in writing because I do not understand English very much, but I tried to correct them... I hope you like the story! Also this is the first part of this series and there will be two more stories✨)
Detective Conan x Miraculous Au
(At Kaito school...)
Aoko:
“Listen Kaito, have you heard any new news about Kid?”
Kaito was surprised:
"No, I didn't listen"
Aoko:
“I heard from my father that he sent a letter saying that he was going to steal
(The sparkling jewel of the sky) in Paris.”
Kaito was shocked by these words and said:
“Really?? When did this happen??”
Aoko replied:
“Yesterday, my father will travel with Detective Kogoro Mouri to Paris.”
Kaito to himself:
“What's going on, first of all, a letter I didn't write
“And Now Detective Kogoro Mouri i have to find a solution to this big problem"
Then Hakuba came to their side and said:
“I don't think Kidd will be able to steal his gem because I heard
There are two heroes in Paris, Ladybug and Cat Noir, and they have great power.”
akako also said:
I also heard that they possess magical gems called "Miraculous” which is the secret of their magical power"
Kaito said sarcastically:
"I don't believe this"
Then Aoko said:
“So what do you think we should confirm this for ourselves?”
Kaito was surprised:
“What do you mean, Aoko?”
Aoko Kaito replied, saying:
“I mean, we will all travel to Paris with my father!”
Kaito is shocked:
"Really?"
Aoko is happy:
“Yes, I want to see these two heroes up close and see Kaito Kid defeated!”
Kaito to himself💭:
“At least this will help me a lot to go to Paris.”
(In Kogoro Mouri office...)
Kogoro said to Ran and Conan:
“Listen, kids, I am traveling to Paris for an important case with Inspector Nakmori
He said that I can take you with me, so prepare from now.”
Ran asked her father:
“What is this important issue in Paris, father?”
Kogoro replied:
Kaitou Kid sent a message saying he was going to steal
(The Sparkling Jewel of the Sky) in the Paris Museum. That's why I'll travel there."
Then Conan asked Kogoro:
"Why did I choose Kid Paris?"
Then kogoro mouri said arrogantly:
“This is why I chose to travel, I am Detective Kogoro Mouri
I will discover the secret of this case easily!” (Then he laughed his famous laugh)
Conan went to Kogoro's office and saw the paper that Kid sent
Conan noticed that Kid called himself "The magician of the beautiful Paris sky"
Then Conan started thinking about the matter and said to himself:
"This is a strange thing.. Why did Kid give himself this name?..
Why would I choose Kid Paris in particular?...Well, I will find out for myself there!..”
(Conan at Dr.Agasa house)
Conan:
“Listen, Doctor, isn’t this a mysterious case?
That Kid wants to steal this particular jewel? "What's so special about it anyway?"
Then Dr. Agasa Conan answered and said:
“Indeed, Shinichi, it is a very precious gem
It is considered one of the most famous jewels in the world.
Then Conan said:
“I understand what you mean Doctor...but isn’t it strange that he calls himself
(The magician of the beautiful Paris sky?) This is the first time he calls himself by this name...”
Dr. Agasa said to him:
“I remember seeing this name in one of your father’s files
Eight years ago, Kaito Kid was robbing in Paris and at that time he called himself "
Conan said to him:
"I understand"
Then Haibara came and said to Conan:
"Kudo, have you heard of Ladybug and Cat Noir?"
Conan said to her:
“No, I did not hear. Is this the name of a book or what?”
Then Haibara said to him:
“No, you silly person, these are the names of the heroes of Paris.”
Conan said, surprised:
"Heroes of Paris?"
Haibara said to him:
“Yes, and they have powers, like heroes in fairy tales”
Then Conan said to her mockingly:
"This is a strange statement, Haibara. Do you really believe this nonsense?"
Then Haibara said to him:
“If you don’t believe me, then when you go to Paris you will understand that I am right.”
(next day at airport)
Kogoro was at an airport waiting for Ran and Conan, but they were too late
But soon after, Kogoro sees that Ran came with her friend Sonoko and also with Conan
Kogoro says to Ran in anger:
“Why all this delay, Ran, and why is your rich friend here too??”
sonoko said:
“Actually, I was the one who insisted on Ran coming with her because I...
I cannot leave her alone in a strange country because I am her best friend (。U‿U。)✨”
Then Conan said to himself:
“You lie, you came with us just to see Kid(ー_ー゛)💢”
Then Kogoro said angrily:
"Where is Nakamori?? He was late longer than Ran and Conan were late.."
Shortly after Kogoro said this, the inspector saw Nakmori with Kaito and the rest of him
Nakmori told kogoro:
"I'm sorry for late"
Kogoro said, surprised:
“Why are these children with you? Have you forgotten that we are on a dangerous mission??”
Then Nakmori Kogoro replied, saying:
“In fact, it is not in my hands who insisted on coming with me, and do not worry, they will not bother us.”
kogoro said:
“No problem, the important thing is that they won’t bother us.”
Sonoko was talking to Ran when Nakmori and the rest of him came
Sonoko said to Ran:
"Listen, Ran, have you seen that boy? He looks a lot like Shinichi!"
Ran looked at Kaito, shocked at the similarity between them
Then Sonoko also said to Ran:
“And that girl, she looks just like you!”
Ran said to Sonoko:
“Yes, she really looks like me.”
When Conan looked at them, he said to himself:
“What a strange coincidence, this girl looks like Ran
And that boy really looks like me. Could he be?"
Then everyone heard the final call for flight
Then everyone rushed to board the plane
Then everyone got on a plane and it took off
(in the plane..)
Kaito was sitting next to Conan and Ran was with Sonoko
Aoko was with Akako and Kogoro was with Nakamori, while Hakuba was sitting alone
When everyone sat in their seats, Kogoro remembered his fear of heights
So he tried to escape through the door of an airplane, and everyone was shocked by this funny situation
Conan and Kaito were laughing at kogoro
Ran and the flight attendant try to get Kogoro back to his seat
Sonoko was filming everything😹
Nakmori was shocked and said to himself💭:
“What an embarrassment, I wish I had not brought him with me in the beginning!”
With difficulty, they managed to put Kogoro back in his seat
And then Kogoro fell asleep 😹
Before the plane arrives, let's go on a short trip to Paris, specifically with Ladybug/Marinette
(At Marinette school..)
After class ended, I was returning home, but Alia came to me and she was happy
I asked Alya why she was so happy and she said, “Is it because of Ladybug?”
But Alya told me:
"No, Marinette, she's not Ladybug, but do you know who's coming to Paris tonight?"
I told her:
"who?"
Alya told me:
He is Japan's famous thief, Kaito Kid! “He will come to Paris tonight
And he wants to steal the jewel of the sparkling sky in a museum!! "
I was shocked by what Alya said and I told her:
“When did this happen??”
Alya told me that he sent a message yesterday, and then I asked her:
"But why are you so happy, Alya? He's just a thief?"
Alya answered me in shock:
"Just a thief?? Do you know how popular my blog will become?"
Imagine Kaito Kid battleship of Ladybug and Cat Noir! "
I was shocked by Alya's words because I did not think that I would have to fight Kaito Kid..
After Alya left, I talked to Tikki
Marinette:
"What should I do, Tikki? Should I go to the museum??"
Tiki:
"Of course you have to go, Marinette. You are a hero fighting against villains."
You don't have to fight only Hawkmoth villains Come on, let's go!"
Marinette:
"Thanks Tikki"
Marinette turned into Ladybug and went to the museum.
And now let's go to Adrian/Black Cat
(At Adrian's house..)
Adrien was playing the piano until he saw a ladybug from his window, so he decided to transform to find out what happened Adrien turned into a cat noir
Cat Noir went out of his room and took out his wand until he saw a message from Ladybug that was saying a message
“Listen cat, we have to meet at the city museum for something important.”
Cat noir was surprised by her words, but he went there
(in the museum...)
When cat noir arrived
he asked her what happened, and she told him everything that happened
cat asked Ladybug who Kaito Kid was, so Ladybug took out her phone And searched for him
"Kaito Kid/1412 This thief has many names, but the most famous are The Magic Thief and The Last Wizard of the Century...Kaito Kid always steals precious jewels in Japanese museums, but he always returns them
He was also stealing in Paris before he went to Japan, but he disappeared for 8 years
But he's back. He can disguise himself as anyone, man or woman
He can change his voice to anyone's voice...more"
cat noir said in surprise:
“If he is a thief, why does he always return jewels?”
Ladybug said while thinking:
“Maybe he is looking for a specific gem..”
Then Kogoro entered with everyone, including a policeman
policeman:
"This is the Royal Jewelery Museum."
Kogoro said to the policeman in surprise:
“Who are these children, policeman, and why are they dressed like this? Are we on Halloween and I don’t know??”
A policeman answered:
"Don't you know them, sir? They are Ladybug and Cat Noir. They are superheroes and they are the ones protecting Paris from the evil Hawkmoth and the akuma"
Conan looked at Ladybug and Cat and said to himself:
"Was Haibara's words true?...And they are heroes?...No, I'm exaggerating, but there's no problem to be sure ?"
Kogoro said to the policeman:
“I don't care, this is ridiculous.”
The black cat said, angry at his words:
"And who are you anyway?"
Kogoro said arrogantly:
"Don't you know, little one, who I am? I am Detective Kogoro Mouri! The most famous and best detective in the whole world! And I am the one who will take over Kaito Kid!!" (Then he laughed as usual)
cat noir was shocked by kogoro😹
Then Hakuba said to the policeman:
“Where is this jewel, policeman?”
the policeman told him to follow him, so they all went with Ladybug and Cat Noir to Jewel's place
💎The jewel of the sparkling sky✨
Everyone was shocked by the beauty of the jewel. It was a unique jewel.
Kaito said when he saw her:
“It truly deserves the name of The jewel of the sparkling sky”
Sonoko took out her phone and was going to photograph the gem
But suddenly the owner of the museum (Alex father) appeared.
museum owner (I forgot his name) said:
"Photography is forbidden, Wait a minute.. Ladybug and Cat Noir?
And are you sir Detective Kogoro Mouri? And who are these children?"
kogoro said:
“Yes, I am Detective Kogoro Mouri, and this is my daughter Ran
and this is kid guest who is staying in my house for a while
and these are friends who came with us”
Conan said to himself while angry💭:
"A guest staying in your house??💢"
Ladybug said to Kogoro:
"So what's your plan, Mr. Kogoro? To catch Kaito Kid."
Kogoro was silent because he did not think of any plan 😹
Kogoro said to Ladybug while feeling embarrassed:
“Actually Ladybug, I still haven’t thought of a plan yet...
but I am Detective Kogoro Mouri, and I will definitely find a plan!”
Ladybug said to herself:
"He said he was a detective He said... How can he call himself a detective when he hasn't found a plan yet? I'm starting to doubt that he's not a detective at all 😑"
But then Hakuba came and said to Ladybug:
"Don't worry about him being arrogant Ladybug, I have a plan!"
Hakuba plan was for Ladybug and Cat Noir to hide in a museum
When Kid comes, Ladybug and Cat catch him and recover the jewel!
Ladybug and Cat Noir agreed to the plan but Nakmori objected
He said that he did not like the plan and said that they could not catch Kid
Hakuba must bear all the responsibility!
After all these words, Kaito said to himself:
"The poor boy😹 he doesn't know that his plan has already been revealed😹"
(in Museum/at night🌙..)
Alya and Sonoko were filming everything and were waiting for Kid to appear. As for Ladybug Cat Noir and the rest of them were waiting for Kid as well, and Aoko was wondering why Kaito suddenly disappeared.
but...
Hawkmoth was also following this event.. and was waiting for someone to hit the akuma...
Now let's go to Kaito Kid to find out what he will do after he discovers Hakuba's plan...
The place was full of policemen, but they were not a serious obstacle for me. The real problem was the appearance of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
I wasn't afraid of them after all they were just children
but I was afraid that what Hakuba and Akako said would be true
about their magical powers...
I entered a museum through a secret door I had prepared previously
And I went to the place where the jewel was
She opened the box that contained the jewel and took it with ease
But suddenly Ladybug and Cat Noir appeared!
Ladybug used her magic yo-yo to catch me
But I was smarter than her. I wore a gas mask and threw an explosive ball at them
I disabled Ladybug and cat noir, and I was able to escape with a jewel
Because let's go with Ladybug and find out what happened next...
"Kaito Kid escaped !"
cat noir said it after Jewel disappeared and kogoro left and stayed behind until they knew what happened
ladybug told them everything that happened.
Hakuba said in shock:
"I...I can't believe it...how did my plan fail??.."
Nakmori said angrily:
“I told you, Ladybug, not to rely on him Now we have lost the jewel
and you, Hakuba, will pay the price for your mistakes!...”
Ladybug said while trying to calm things down:
"There is no need to be angry, Mr. Nakmori. Kid must not have gone far from here. We can recover the jewel."
Then Nakamori said to Ladybug:
"Okay, Ladybug, but I'm the one who has a good plan this time!..."
They all got ready to go, but Hakuba did not move from his place
Ladybug said to him:
"Are you coming with us, Hakuba?"
Hakuba refused to come with them, so they all left and remained alone in a museum
Then Hakuba said, feeling very disappointed:
“How did my plan fail?...And how did I fail...”
......
Hawkmoth was watching everything until he felt Hakuba feelings and said:
“He wanted to help them but they abandoned him...a good victim of an evil conspiracy
(And He caught a butterfly and made it an akuma) Fly away akuma, and make him evil !"
The akuma entered the museum and injured Hakuba.
Hawkmoth said to Hakuba after hitting him with the kuma:
“(Black kid) I am Hawkmoth, from now on you will make everyone
who hurt you regret what they did to you And you will be able to catch Kaito Kid! But in return, bring me Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir”
Hakuba told him:
"Okay Hawkmoth..."
Hakuba turns into black kid...
Later....
Ladybug said to the cat:
“We didn't find anything here either...and I don't think Nakmori found anything.”
The black cat said:
"I can't... We've searched every city dozens of times! Can't we get some rest?"
Ladybug answered:
“Okay, we will rest for a while, but before that I want to go to a museum, because I feel that we will find evidence there.”
Later, Ladybug and the cat went to a museum and they were alone because the museum was empty of people
Then Ladybug said, feeling a strange feeling:
"It's a quiet place.. too quiet.. Wait a minute. Wasn't Hakuba here a while ago?.. Where did that boy go at a time like this.."
Then the black cat heard a strange voice and said:
“Be careful, Ladybug!”
The cat rushed and tried to catch Ladybug, but it was already too late...
The magic box fell on them and they tried to escape, but they were unable to escape
Then a strange person came towards them and was...
Black kid !
Ladybug and Cat Noir were shocked and then Ladybug said:
"Kaito Kid??"
A black kid said to her:
"No, I am Black Kid! After I get rid of you two, I will get rid of Kaito Kid myself!"
Then Ladybug said:
"Wait, that sound is familiar... Wait a minute, Hakuba?? I took an akuma...
Listen Hakuba, I mean Kid Black, don't listen to Hawkmoth, he's evil, not us!"
A black kid said to her:
"That's enough! I'll take Miraculous from you both !"
But suddenly!...
Kaito Kid appears!
Kaito Kid took out his gun and hit a box with it until Ladybug and Cat came out...
Ladybug and Cat Noir were in shock at Kid and how he helped them...
Then Kid came towards them and said:
"Come on use your Magic Ladybug, there's no time !"
Then Ladybug used her lucky charm and she got...
Football !
Ladybug was surprised when she got a ball, but Kaito knew the solution was....Conan!
Then Kaito Kid said to Ladybug:
"Wait, Ladybug, I know the solution and I'll get it right away!"
But you have to give me that ball first.”
Ladybug was hesitant at first, but Kid told her to go along with it
Ladybug gave him the ball and told him not to be late
Then Kaitou Kid quickly left the museum and went to look for Conan
(At Paris Hotel...)
Conan watched in shock as Sonoko fought with Chloe😹
Ran and Zoe were trying to stop the quarrel. Conan heard a strange sound from outside, so he decided to go and find out the source of this sound... When Conan came out, they were surprised that the owner of the voice was...
Kaito Kid !..
Conan asked Kid why he was here, and Kid told Conan everything, so Conan decided to help them, then Conan went with Kid to a museum. Ladybug and Cat Noir were fighting Black Kid and when Kid arrived with Conan, Ladybug used her magic vision to know what to do with the spell Then Ladybug said to Kid, Conan, and Cat... They have to do it
Then the plan began...
Ladybug and Cat Noir went to fight black Kid
Black Kid:
“This is your problem heroes, Even you, Ladybug, have believed all your life that good always wins, but this only happens in fairy tales.. but in real life this does not happen”
Ladybug laughed and Kid Black said:
"Why are you laughing?? You lost !!"
Ladybug said:
"This is not our problem, it is your problem you evil people !! You always think that you will win and take the Miraculous, but in the end you will lose like the rest of the evil people!"
Black kid:
"Oh really? We'll see who really wins after taking the Miraculous !!"
And at the same time
Kaito Kid caught Conan and Conan filled his magic shoe made by Dr. Agasa and Conan caught the magic ball. Then Conan asked Kaito where Akuma was, and Kid said he suspected Akuma was in his hat. Then Conan hit the ball with all his might on the hat, so the hat flew to the side of the cat.
Then the cat noir used cataclysm on the hat until the Akuma came out
Then Akuma came out and Ladybug used her strength again to catch Akuma, and she actually caught her! I promised a normal butterfly and a ladybug, ladybug used Miraculous to restore everything as it was.
Then Ladybug Cat, and Kaito Kid said at the same time:
"We succeeded!"
Hakuba did not remember anything that happened to him after he was hit by the pile
Then Ladybug came to him and told him everything that happened and gave him a magic spell So that Hawkmoth would not be able to infect him with Kuma again, Hakuba was shocked when he saw Kaito Kid, and before the police arrived at the museum, Kid told Ladybug and Cat Noir to go to the Tower of Paris to tell them something important
then Kaito Kid suddenly disappeared...
After Kaito Kid was gone, Ladybug, Cat Noir, and Cat Noir drove Hakuba and Conan to the Paris Hotel, where Kogoro and everyone else were. Then Ladybug and Cat Noir explained everything that had happened to everyone, and Ladybug promised Nakamori that she would recover the jewel from Kaito Kid!
(Note: Ladybug and Cat Noir did not tell anyone about their encounter with Kaito Kid)
After that, Ladybug and Cat Noir went to the Paris Tower so that they would know what Kid wanted from them, but they did not know that Alya had followed them so that they could imagine what would happen...
(In the Paris Tower..)
Kaito was pointing the jewel towards the moonlight until he was sure whether it was the jewel he wanted or not. Then Ladybug and Cat Noir arrived on time and they had a few minutes before turning. Ladybug asked Kid why he was a thief? What are his goals and is he good or evil?
Then Kaito Kid said to her while holding a red rose in his hand:
"In reality, I am not evil.. In fact, I am looking for a specific jewel. That jewel has a long story, but I can say that it is a magical jewel, and I am searching for it to take revenge on the organization that killed my father when I was young...”
Ladybug and Cat Noir were shocked by Kaito Kid words
Then cat noir said to Kid:
“I know how you feel... to lose someone you love... but why don't you tell the truth to everyone from the beginning?”
Kaito Kid said to Cat Noir:
“In fact, there is no meaning for me to be a magical thief if all of my truth is discovered.. It is like keeping your identity completely secret.. There is no meaning for you to be heroes if everyone discovers the truth. In this life there are many secrets and mysteries that must remain secret until the appropriate time"
After these words, Kaitou Kid approached Ladybug and gave her a red rose
Then Kaito Kid kissed Ladybug's hand and before Kid went, Cat Noir felt jealous and angry because of Kid's behavior and asked him why he did this, so Kaito Kid said to him:
“This is my way of dealing with women, so...See you, heroes of Paris!”
But Kid suddenly stopped because he noticed Alya's presence
Kaitou Kid caught her while she was filming everything that happened
So he took her phone and deleted the video. Ladybug and Cat Noir were shocked because they did not feel her. Alya was shocked that Kid deleted a video, but when he gave her her phone, Alya quickly started a live broadcast on her blog with the title:
(A direct interview with the famous Japanese thief Kaito Kid and with Ladybug and Cat Noir!)
Then Alya said to them:
“Can I interview you?✨”
But Ladybug and Cat heard that their time was up and that they were about to transform, so they apologized to Alya and left already..
But Kaitou Kid approached her and said to her:
“Actually, I have all the time for this, so you can interview me.”
But Elia said to him while laughing:
"I don't think Nakmori liked your idea 😂"
Kaitou Kid looked back and saw Inspector Nakamori with Togomori and many policemen
Kid said to Alya:
"Maybe next time I'll do that interview because I'm going!"
Kaito Kid escaped from a place with his glider, and an inspector tried to catch him, but he was unable to do anything
Because let's go with Ladybug and Cat Noir
Ladybug was talking to Cat about what happened with Kid
But suddenly the black cat said in shock:
"Look at your neck Ladybug, It's a jewel !!"
Ladybug looked at her neck and was shocked at how the jewel got there, but she remembered when Kid kissed her hand she felt something on her neck, but she did not take it at that time Kid had put the necklace on her and she would not have felt...
Then Ladybug said holding a jewel:
“He truly deserves the name of Magical Thief...”
Tumblr media
In the morning, Ladybug returned a jewel to the museum
The museum owner thanked the ladybug for returning the jewel
Aoko was angry with Kaito because he disappeared all night, but she forgave him in the end, and Sonoko and Chloe became friends...
after many problems😹
Conan apologized to Haibara because he did not believe her about Ladybug and the cat, and the next day they all went to the airport to return to Japan. When they entered a plane, Kogoro remembered his fear of heights and caused Kogoro more problems😹 and about escaping from a plane as usual😹😹
But suddenly...
A plane passenger screamed because he found a woman killed with a knife...
Everyone was shocked by this news, but Nakmori said:
"As long as Kogoro is with his family, a murder should definitely happen!"
Then Kaito said to Conan:
"It's your turn little detective, Go solve this case!"
So Conan went with Tokomori to solve the case, but then Kaito said while looking at the sky from the window:
“But who is that unknown person who sent me to Paris to steal that jewel and what is his interest in that..?”
....
There was an unknown person watching the live video of Kid and Ladybug from Alya's blog... and this person is the same person who sent that message... I wonder who this person is?... and what is his interest in this?... this is what you will know in the next part... .
(The End)

Questions 3 and 6 for the fanfic asks!
Yay! Thanks for asking ^^
3 - fave pairing and 6 - fave HC?? Damn that's so tough as I am multifandom literally lmao - I will explain one fandom with another fandom lol
But 👌OK I will answer w my best ability!!
I am lazy to write each of fandom so I will answer it based on my tags!! Dcmk = detective conan
3) Akai Shuuichi / Jodie Starling (romantically), Akako / Hakuba & Aoko / Kaito (romantically) although I love Hakuba / Kaito platonically
GwenDerick forever!!! (Romantically) For other pairings I am not sure as canonically they are so confusing lmao to decide ship it romantically or platonically but I truly loves WhitPelnia, CeLia, OrNika, SyRon, MarNe, LoNce, JaLee | Lilyth
I am SniLy (Snape x Lily) enjoyer, I am truly love the fanworks where somehow Severus Snape gets redemption arc in any way possible
I love Ruri and Chrome romantically! They are married in sequel chapters, they are canon!!!
So many intense ship wars in this fandom but I truly love characters x therapy to gets happiness and peace 🤣 especially to Hoshino twin, Akane and Kana - they are so messy in mental health
6) Wao so I take fave HC of my biggest 5 and current active fandoms?! Ahhaha chuckle
Please Gosho, wrap up everything - I personally don't care of new characters shennanigans so! Please make the "old" Ones come back. I feel the frustation thoroughout fandom that make the join force of messy alliance - DCMK - is the best
Frederick is wet cat (through bullying era) and meets a giant white catboi at the street - they are sharing the night together just chilling / I am usually not furry enjoyer but especially at ep 165 enabling me to realizes.. They are cats all along
Time traveling in this fandom kinda abused lmao - but I do anyway to gets redemption for Sev like return to the past, the sassier Snape to reviving his painful past while now has morality compass to do things good (while Lily fall to him not as in pity like but as amazed of him earn honor) is my absolute favorite HC of that fandom
IMHO shennanigans of everyone are very good and HC kinda not needed, but still I like the crew shenanigans of crafting weird science projects
I am kinda wonderimg about preteen AU where toddlers of everyone just vibings and - Ai alives
/those the answers from me! Have good day!!!
Btw I just realized you are asking "fanfic asks" LMAO, I do have fanfic explored in my top 4 fandoms but not really for OnK 0.0 And they are too many examples of fics that I enjoy ahahha. I feel our fandoms differs too.. So what I like, likely not as the same as others but that's OK ;) Also I love other fandom series too xD

Ship Bingo
@salmoncaughtbyacrow
Matsuda x Hagi
Answered here!
2. Kaito x Shinichi
Tumblr media
I've read a lot of fics with background KaiShin, and now I'm in love with them. And don't get me wrong, I still want ShinRan to be endgame, but I would also not complain if we got KaiShin endgame instead (which I have zero faith will happen, but...)
3. Kaito x Hakuba
Tumblr media
I'll admit I haven't kept up as much with Magic Kaito, plus it's been forever since we've even seen Hakuba in either franchise, so I can't form much of an opinion on this ship. Looking at Hakuba's character page though, I will say that the rivals/enemies-to-lovers aspect automatically piques my interest.
4. Scotch x Akai
Tumblr media
Honestly, all of the Whiskey Trio are just so shippable with each other (just in case it wasn't obvious who my OT3 is lol).
But seriously, Scotch and Akai together would just be so amazing and tragic and I need more of it.
5. Shiho x Ayumi
Tumblr media
I can definitely see Ayumi having a crush on Shiho/Haibara, but honestly, I couldn't really see Shiho returning her feelings. If anything, I feel like she would see Ayumi as a little sister more than anything especially since she's like 12-13 years younger than Shiho. She probably feels like she's helped raise Ayumi in a way.
6. Gin x Akai
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong, I definitely see why people would ship Gin x Akai, it's just...never really been something that appeals to me? Honestly, I don't really have a reason; I guess it's just one of those things.
It would make for some pretty funny crackfic content though.
7. Toichi x Yusaku
Tumblr media
Toichi x Yusaku is essentially just the previous generation's Kaito x Shinichi, right? So they're automatically cool in my book.
(I really need to rewatch some of the older episodes again.)
8. Akako x Aoko
Tumblr media
Once again, I don't know too much about either of these characters, but reading about them on the DCMK wiki...again, enemies-to-lovers will always be a winner in my book. Plus if they were to get together, their personalities would make every interaction very entertaining.
9. Chikage x Toichi
Tumblr media
Again, I don't know much about these characters, but I can see why they ended up falling for each other. I can imagine Chikage and Toichi being the ultimate dynamic duo.
10. Yukiko x Yusaku
Tumblr media
Honestly, I feel like we don't really see enough about Yukiko and Yusaku's relationship to get a good picture of it, but from what they do show us, it does seem like they're genuinely happy together.
It would be nice if they were better parents, but that's a post for another time.
Thanks for sending these in!

SEND ME A FANDOM
I’ll tell you:
( selectively accepting )
@magician-under-the-moonlight said: Magic Kaito
The first character I first fell in love with: Akako. She’s really interesting. Not only is she a witch but she’s somewhat of an antagonist too which is really neat when she is going through her redemption arc.  The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Probably Kaito Kuroba. More importantly his civilian persona. ( lol ). I was always interested in KID but not really his home life you know? The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Aoko. I really don’t like the fact that her and Ran look alike in the looks department but also hating KID for stealing her father / daughter bonding time. Like it’s not KID’s fault that her father is the way he is. The character I love that everyone else hates: I think you know this one but Mr. Saguru Hakuba. I just love him and his haughty attitude but I also feel a bit bad because he gets treated badly for being only half Japanese. Like when I felt bad for Ann in Persona because she was also like 1/4 foreign and got bullied because of it.  The character I used to love but don’t any longer: I guess Jii. He is somewhat pointless in the show but I guess they needed a Dr. Agasa type of character somehow.  The character I would totally smooch: Uh I guess Toichi Kuroba, Kaito’s dad?? There isn’t a lot of adult characters in Magic Kaito The character I’d want to be like: I guess Akako? lol. She has magical powers after all. The character I’d slap: Snake or whatever he calls himself. Oh and the others who are after Pandora, them too I guess. A pairing that I love: Kaito x Akira / KID x JOKER. lol. hmm. I really don’t have a pairing really. I mean Kaito x Akako is one sided at best and Hakuba x Kaito is just fitting troupes at this point. So yeah I really don’t have pairings that I love outside of crossovers. A pairing that I despise: Kaito x Aoko. Which sadly might become canon but I really don’t like the childhood friends troupe. Plus they bicker like cats and dogs more than the usual troupe does, which is a nope from me.

DCMK Couples and Seasons (and what kind of wedding I think they’d have)
I always associate the main DCMK couples with seasons for some reason.
Shinichi x Ran: Spring. Pretty obvious what with the sakura motif, and sakura literally being the reason they met. However, since they are the main couple of Gosho-sensei’s longest running manga, they’re associated with pretty much any season. If I knew how to do edits, I’d probably do one of ShinRan throughout the seasons and years (spring for their first meeting in kindergarten, summer for their childhood like the time they met the Akai family, winter for their middle school years with the ski trip and New York coming to mind, and finally fall for the culmination of all those moments leading to the answer to the confession on the blazing red stage of the Kiyomizu). I think they’d go with a Western wedding.
Heiji x Kazuha: Autumn. I feel for Heiji. The Kiyomizu would have been the perfect stage to confess to Kazuha. Their love story is intricately intertwined with Kyoto, land of the falling red leaves, what with Heiji meeting (in a way) his first love, Kazuha there, as well as with the recent movie focusing on the both of them and karuta. Definitely a Japanese wedding for these two.
Kaito x Aoko: Winter. They’re great (and suck respectively) at winter sports. Blue and white are commonly associated with them, with Kaito often giving blue roses to Aoko, so much that it’s become her motif, like sapphires. I think they’d opt for a Western wedding too. Both their homes are quite westernized, while Kaito definitely gets a lot of inspiration from the west.
Makoto x Sonoko: Summer. You would think it’s the only one left, but really, I think it fits. They met in the summer after all with Makoto working part-time by the beach, and Makoto fell in love with Sonoko’s bright and sunny personality. While Sonoko may prefer a Western wedding, I think they’d eventually go for a more traditional one with Makoto’s preference and considering that Suzuki is a zaibatsu (plus her older sister already went with a western wedding).
We don’t have that much moments for Hakuba x Akako yet, though Hakuba’s innocent crush on her is cute. Time will only tell if it’s genuine or a byproduct of Akako’s magic. Definitely a western wedding, but not inside in a Church, and I can somehow imagine Akako wearing a black wedding gown, haha.

Beyond the Mortal Realm (POTO!AU)
AO3 Pairing: Kaito x Aoko (KaiAo) & Hakuba x Akako (HakuAka) Word count: 7695 (completed) Rating: T Warning: Mild violence Summary: When Koizumi Akako, the prima donna of the opera, was invited by Count Hakuba to enjoy the rise and fall of her rival Nakamori Aoko, she did not imagine herself to fall into a machination that would lead them into the heart and depths of the opera to chase its haunting phantom... The Phantom of the Opera!AU (Written for Halloween 2021)
Koizumi Akako, at the time the most prized prima donna of the capital, was peacefully enjoying her breakfast in her villa when she received Count Hakuba’s letter.
My dear Miss Koizumi,
As bold and off color such a proposal may appeal to a lady of your quality, I have in the end determined that an opportunity so great to both you and I could not be wasted over decorum and seemliness. My request may disturb you at first, as a boor only would invite a virtuoso to an exhibit of artists way more mediocre than herself; regardless, if you accept, you will most likely thank me for showing you an object of curiosity like no other, one I have recently discovered.
Tonight, the opera will present the third act of Lucie de Lammermoor at exactly 11:15:00 PM. Let us meet there, lodge 7.
I am looking forward to seeing you again.
Hakuba Saguru
A faint grin appeared on Akako’s lips. Oh, this poor, poor Count Hakuba -how much did he think himself special to content himself with unimaginative praises and a paper that was more of a note than a letter? His nobility and unorthodox skills in deduction must have gone up to his head after all. When compared to her line of suitors, full of composers and poets that translated her beauty into notes and words that could move the dead, his confidence and unusual career as a detective when everyone expected him to debut in politics or the military was clearly no match.
However she was not feeling entirely insensitive toward him. As every man she ever encountered, he was totally infatuated with her, that was no secret, and seeing him blush every time their eyes met always flattered her ego. Nonetheless, he had a sense of composure that few men had in her presence, and maintained his wittiness, class and charisma in any situation. He never wavered.
That pleased her. Most artists who sang her were young talents in their fields, but lousy orators in society, and she could not bear to be seen with a man that was not of her stature at least, unless it was a handful of admirers she dominated.
‘ Let us meet ’... Yes, she could see herself standing next to him without shame.
In fact, there were some thrills in such an act. Her, alone with the Count in the lodge, in front of that theater of life and rumors that was the opera? How entertaining that would be to kick that nasty anthill and watch her suitors melt into despair! She giggled just thinking about it.
Besides, she truly wondered what ‘object of curiosity” could the Count think would interest her so greatly, in her own workplace, in middle of a representation of that little Aoko girl on top of that?
Unconsciously, Akako automatically rolled her eyes thinking about her. That little dummy with barely an inch of talent, that was only a singer because of her father being the new director of the opera, had stolen her starring role! The tragic role of Lucie was hers, it always had been as far as she remembered, and they gave it to this ridiculous girl with her squeaky voice and childish manners! Nonsense, pure nonsense!
‘I am sorry, Miss Koizumi, but no matter how much of a fuss you’ll make, that is the stage director’s final decision! I don’t think you realize Aoko worked as hard as you did -perhaps even harder, for she wasn’t born with your natural talent-, and how much she improved. Besides, the public needs novelty -we can’t always serve them the old soup they tasted a hundred times!’
It took Akako all her strength to crumple and burn Hakuba’s missive on the spot when remembering those words.
Old soup! An old soup! How could they call her this?! If she was an old soup, then that Aoko was not even the most basic broth! Oh, she never forgot the rehearsals of Mozart’s Magic Flute with her, six months prior to that. While Akako was a majestic Queen of the Night, Aoko was a truly pitiful Pamina. Always messing up, never giving up and trying again and again, as if the opera was a place for such amateurism! And now, to know she managed to completely kick the prima donna off Lucie de Lammermoor!...
Thinking of this scandal again, Akako’s blood still burned in rage. None of her attempts to curse her rival or to cancel the representation had been successful so far, and thankfully her spiteful attitude had been kept out of the tabloids.
Hakuba’s invitation suddenly seemed to be the unexpected solution to her turmoil. She smirked.
Watching and hearing Aoko ridicule herself for hours straight, with an eye full of despise and highness from her lodge, while holding on the arm of a gentleman people would think to be her lover, and just knowing her name would be on all newspapers the day after, would be an absolute delight.
She could not miss such a show -especially if she was, in the end, the starring role.
‘How daring of that man! Who does he think he is, requesting such a thing from lady Koizumi!...’ Her hunchback servant groaned as he read the letter she still held while in deep thoughts, above her shoulder, calling her back to reality.
‘Who told you could read it, you nasty goblin, and address yourself to me without permission above that?’ She blurted out. ‘Go fetch me some sealing wax, and hurry up if you don’t want to be cursed for six generations!’
‘Y-yes, madam!’
And he ran as fast as he could.
Akako sighed, picked up the plum in the ink pot -she had the habit to answer her admirers’ mails in the morning-, and as she hummed the notes of On my lips every kiss is like wine, traced directly on Hakuba’s letter, with a most delicate handwriting:
My dearest Mr. Hakuba,
This would be an honor. Let us meet.
~
Akako arrived at the opera by the time Hakuba had indicated to her, during the intermission between the second and third act. As she made her way to the seventh lodge when spectators were invited to find their seat again, people could not help but gossip as they stared at her, mesmerized, much to her pleasure. It was not entirely due to her unexpected appearance at the third act; she took great care wearing the finest toilet she owned, a crimson red laced dress which both complimented her complexion and name, having the most prestigious hairdresser of the capital sublime her, and fanning herself most elegantly.
Battling eyes and setting hearts a-flutter on her way, she promptly followed the hostess and climbed to lodge seven.
As soon as Count Hakuba saw her enter, he stood up and asked for her hand to kiss. ‘You are in advance of two minutes, forty two seconds and three hundred and sixty nine milliseconds’, he said as she granted her gloved hand to him. ‘This is a relief. I feared you’d arrive too late.’
‘How could an opera singer be late?’ She smirked as she felt the feathered kiss through the fabric. ‘Would she make her costumer wait, her costume would be unfitting; would it be the orchestra, she’d never hit the notes; would it be her public she would not last two representations before being replaced, both on stage and in hearts. An singer who comes late is a bad singer. But we both know that is what I am, right?'
Hakuba heart-fully agreed, and his glimmering eyes betrayed all the brimful admiration he had for her. Ah! It was so, so easy to lead them on; fancy little words always hit the spot. He guided her into her seat, and if it was not for demeanor, she would have laughed out lout. She just loved her little games.
‘So, Count, what is this object of curiosity you flaunted so much to me? Show me.’
‘Oh, I am sorry, Miss Koizumi’, Hakuba replied while adjusting his lorgnette, ‘There would be no pleasure of mystery to tell right away. Please bare with me a little longer, or at least allow to enlighten you in a different way’, he added when Akako let out a bit of an irritated pout.
‘By the way, Miss Koizumi, the jewels you are splendidly wearing tonight have high value, don't they?’
‘Of course! This rubies belonged to generations and generations of women in my family, and have been certified by experts of all times. They are worth hundreds of thousands!’
‘Oh, it is just that you should keep them close by, then. He may fancy them, but do not worry; I won’t let him take them.’
Akako deeply frowned. ‘Who?’
‘Well, Phantom KID of course!’
She blinked, astonished by such a statement, but then the instant she was about to ask for more, the opera was announced to continue, and the lodge was plunged into darkness.
Akako remained confused. Phantom KID? What was he talking about? Was not this a silly urban rumor to explain the opera's systematic and honestly obnoxious pick-pocketing? Indeed, as many women usually lost their prized jewelry representation after representation, before it was returned to the director the next day, but no thief was ever arrested, Akako had always thought they were the whims of some fetishist or kleptomaniac that worked within the opera. Others had developed this silly incarnation of a phantom thief no one could catch -some even pretended to have seen him face to face! She honestly wondered how the Cartesian Hakuba could ever believe in such fairy tales.
‘Mr Hakuba’, she whispered to him despite the curtains slowly rising up, ‘You do not believe in such ridiculous things, do you?’
‘Oh, I don’t need to, for he’s real!’
Akako was left speechless yet again for a few seconds. She then shook her head a bit, and leaned towards him, a gesture that finally made him look directly at her, and though she could not see it, provoked quite a blush.
‘No, I- may this stay between you and I, my dear Count, but I have deeply studied the occult in my youth, and had a ghost ever taken residence in this place I spend my days and nights in, I would have absolutely known!’
He proudly grinned and raised his index in a pompous manner. ‘That is great news, then, for “Phantom KID” is nothing but a name, and it is a living man I have been hired to arrest.’
Akako’s raised her eyebrows. ‘Hired?’
‘Indeed. Please, look at this.’
At those words, while the actors of Henry and Edgar began singing the first part of the act, Hakuba pulled the curtains of the lodge and lightened a match, showing Akako worn-out letters. They all showed some sort of enigmas, and a strange symbol at the end of each.
‘This is…’ Akako began, moistening her lips.
‘His requests’, Hakuba explained. ‘Ever since Mr Nakamori has taken the direction of the opera, he has received these every now and then. He thought of a bad joke at first, but when Phantom KID threatened not to give back the stolen jewels of the night if he did not agree to his demands, and actually did so, it was only the beginning. More and more, the phantom urged Nakamori to meet his requests, causing more casualties, and almost driving the old man insane chasing him.’
‘This is a funny story to the least’, Akako interrupted, ‘but how does that concern me? I had barely ever heard of this phantom before just now.’
While she would never admit it out loud, she did not have an inch of sympathy for that old fart Nakamori. In fact, if the phantom could make him quit, it would have been much to her pleasure.
‘I was coming to it’, the Count announced, handing her another letter.
Akako squinted, approached to the new match her partner lightened. Unlike other missives, not only was this one way shorter, but also crystal clear upon his message. No fancy riddle. No gentleman-like politeness. No requests with an honeyed, aristocratic syntax and vocabulary.
Make Miss Nakamori the starring role of Lucie de Lammermoor, or an Air de la folie of another kind shall make your opera collapse.
Phantom KID
Akako’s eyes widened. All her members instantly shook to the bone. So, all along, the source of her humiliation, frustration and dishonor was no other than…!
‘This is OUTRAGEOUS!’ She erupted, the electroshock the words sent through her making her jump to her feet.
‘It is’, Hakuba approved, blowing up his match and making her sit back again, as stiff and irritated as she was. ‘Mr Nakamori received it again two days ago, right after the stage director had finally expressed doubts about having her as Lucie. Some thought it was an attempt of the Miss to keep her role, but I have cleared that the poor girl has nothing to do with that. Though she is indeed starring as Lucie tonight, I have reasons to think he will take action in the second part of the third act…’
‘L’Air de la folie ’, Akako murmured with a blank voice.
‘Precisely.’
Her fists tightened, her knuckles becoming white. She stayed as such for a good minute, gritting her teeth in rage, not answering in the slightest to Hakuba’s next inquiries. Then, suddenly, she bolted out of her seat again and firmly grasped his hand, surprising him.
‘My dear Hakuba, no matter at what cost, you must arrest this b… rascal! I could not live one day again knowing I could be dishonored like that one more time! I beg you!!’
Her usual charming, somewhat-cold expression was broken like it had never been, even in the faint obscurity. Her eyes shined with a hot determination and her dainty fingers pressed themselves so furiously against his hand, Hakuba felt electric sparks run through his entire body.
‘Yes… Yes, of course’, he mumbled, taken aback.
One and the other stared at each other most intensely, until time made Akako regain some sort of sense and, with a little squeak that was nothing like her, she let go of his hand and sat back in her seat turning her gaze toward anything and everything but him.
The Count remained frozen for a couple  more of seconds, then came back to life as well, cleared his voice, yet the air of the lodge was still tense. ‘We still have some time before l’Air de la folie, don’t we?’ He noticed, and Akako, who knew Lucie de Lammermoor by heart, nodded. ‘How about a couple of refreshments?’
‘I-I would enjoy that very much. Thank you.’
As Hakuba left the lodge, looking for the hostess, Akako opened the curtains again and vigorously fanned herself.
The revelation had made her lose her cool in front of the Count, of all people. She truly needed to let off some steam.
Abruptly, when she noticed, or rather remembered, that all glances in the audience were now turned to her, her ordinary, overly confident composure came back naturally and instantly. In the heat of the moment, she had even forgotten the opera was no playroom. It was an arena where only the strongest could remain.
Soon after Hakuba came back and the hostess served them drinks, the stage scenery began to change as an actor scurried to the front of the stage, dramatically announcing to the wedding guests the bride had murdered her groom. Shy steps were to be heard shortly afterward from the top of the marble stairs.
Lucie -but to Akako, it was no one but the grimed nasty little Nakamori- came down the stairs. With messy let-down hair fluttering on her shoulders, her now lifeless cold blue eyes accentuating her prominent dark circles and her gaunt features, her wedding dress was not only torn apart, but a massive splash of scarlet blood smeared its plain whiteness. Little red spurts had bloomed upon her snow-white hands, wrists, and face.
The makeup man truly outdid himself, and these welcomed details for any spectators only further fueled Akako’s disgust. Why was everyone pouring their talent for this lousy girl tonight?!
Aoko started to sing.
Mon nom s’est fait entendre au milieu de vos chants ! C’était sa voix, sa voix si chère, et si tendre !...
In spite of herself, Akako instantly let out an astounded pout. Aoko… had improved. As much as she loved to bad mouth, Akako could not deny such evidence to her expert ear. Her attention could not remain long unto the stage, however. The public was unusually disturbed and agitated; two men were making their way to their seats, but that did not justify such an animation, and Akako was much more interested in this than whatever nice sounds Aoko could try to utter.
Edgar, je te suis rendue ! Edgar, oh, mon Edgar ! Viens, je te suis rendue ! Je me suis soustraite au pouvoir des méchants, Au pouvoir des méchants !
‘What are they so inclined to blabber about?’ She asked Hakuba, as she could get nothing from the whispers that were overshadowed by the orchestra.
‘Oh, it is just that the pendant on her neck caused quite a commotion. Many think Lucie having such bizarre jewelry does not fit her character. They already complained about it in act two.’
Akako raised her head again to the little ghost-like actress. Upon her chest, a strange-looking stone took pride of place. It was a chiseled, clear gem, but one that barely projected any shiny reflects. A cheap jewel made of glass most certainly, into which another gem could be seen, oval and crimson, like a single, enormous drop of blood. All that time, Akako had not noticed it, for she thought it was another blood stain of her collarbone.
‘It is cheap-looking indeed…’
Suddenly, Aoko’s voice peaked, forcefully driving Akako back to the performance.
Oh ciel ! Là-bas des spectres se dressent !
She laughed. No, this would be impossible… That could simply not be…
Ah ! Ils nous séparent ! Oh ciel ! Fuyons, Edgar, Edgar, Edgar !
No one could ever… She could not conceive…
Ils nous séparent ! Ils nous séparent ! Ne me laisse pas !
The instant Aoko reached the highest note, with perfect stability and all that while literally running across the stage, Akako’s nervous laughter completely ceased.
The clear, majestic voice, its incredible precision embracing both amateur and expert hearts, was not what made Miss Nakamori’s performance so outstanding, for a perfectly tuned instrument was still a mere object, and therefore soulless. Yet, here and now, Miss Nakamori was not singing music. She was living it, acting it as if partitions and theater only made one with her, in a way that could not help but draw tears from your eyes and pain to your heart, she was singing with none other than her soul.
For a split second, even Akako, who knew this melody, its notes and lyrics by heart, and came to see nothing in it but a work to apply in order to please, the woman that was weeping on stage was no longer her despised rival, but poor, real Lucie that slowly succumbed to madness.
‘This is pure nonsense !’ She jarred to herself, her nails engulfing the armrests of her chair. ‘No one, not even angels themselves, could improve so much over a mere six month period!...’
Something underneath all that was fishy and so obviously wrong.
Suddenly, a feminine, high-pitched scream resonated through the entire place, disrupting the scene. Reacting instantly, both Hakuba and Akako leaned down the lodge’s balcony.
In the middle of the front row, two men, the ones who arrived late in the act, were standing, their right arm raised, and though darkness reigned, everyone could distinct the silhouettes and sparkle of guns in their hands, the canons aiming at the frozen-in-place Aoko.
‘Tch’, Hakuba let out as he drew a gun out of his inner pocket, ‘That’s what I thought!...’
Before the crowd could even properly break into panic, the deafening gunshots were exchanged: the men fired at Aoko, while Hakuba shot one of the attackers’ hand, yet before anyone could see who ended up hitting who, the entire opera was plunged into obscurity. A painful masculine yell convinced the Count his target had been reached, but no strong woman scream, if it was not for the little gasps of those panicking, was heard. Only then did light reappear on the terrifying stage.
The aggressors were nowhere to be found, their guns knocked down to the ground, and neither was Nakamori Aoko. In her stead was a fresh bloodstain, that no one knew if it was fake or real.
'Ah ah ah!'
All at once, a thrill-sending, sadistic yet youthful cackle echoed through every lodge. The effect across the mob was immediate. ‘It’s the phantom! The phantom abducted Miss Nakamori to the realm of the dead!’
Everyone and their mother rushed in panic to the exits, almost stumping each other in the process. In the middle of it all, Mr Nakamori and employees could be seen trying to reason with them, in vain.
Akako, too, scurried to the lodge’s exit. ‘Miss Koizumi’, Hakuba called her, catching her wrist, ‘Don’t. Going out right now will only put you in danger, perhaps as much as Miss Nakamori herself!’
‘Let go of me!’ She screeched, forcing out her wrist out of his grasp. ‘Aoko has not been kidnapped, you goof, I saw her sneak out of the stage in the dark! Do you think I can let her escape me, after what irredeemable damage she has just done to every single aspect of my reputation?! I don’t care about whatever phantom anymore -I want HER!’
And, just like that, without even waiting for his reaction, Akako abandoned her dear Count to dash through corridors.
She expected the lights to come back quickly to the public, but it did not, and as she roamed into the murk of the far aisles, she had no choice but to guide herself with a little magic flame she invoked on her finger. In her hurry, she had not even thought of borrowing some matches from Hakuba. Convincing herself no one would notice if she blew it out fast enough when meeting someone, she pursued her descent through passages she knew no one would go through in the panic, and indeed, through the rumbles of the mob moving could still be perceived, Akako met not a soul, if it was not for Momoi Keiko, a silly little ballerina Nakamori Aoko had recently grown fond of, going up the stairs that led to the artists' dressing-rooms in the backstage, a candle in her hand.
‘Keiko’, Akako called her, ‘Miss Nakamori is in her dressing-room, is she not? Do not lie to me.’
‘S-She is, Miss’, Keiko easily admitted, as she had always been intimidated by the prima donna. ‘But she’s hurt, though it’s nothing serious, and deeply upset. She needs some alone time before the police arrives and take her deposition… Please, don’t disturb her…’
‘I won’t.’
Keiko nodded, swallowing anxiously and proceeded. As Akako did so herself, the singer could not help but repress a chuckle.  If that little wench wanted peace, she should not have started a war.
Akako finally reached the most distant dressing-room, close to the last corridor’s dead end, which was Aoko’s. She prudently tiptoed toward the door, wanting to surprise her rival in whatever emotion she expressed right now, right behind it, to finally catch her in the sole truth. But, as soon as her hand lightly touched the handle, something she, of all things, expected the least, happened. A man’s voice.
‘Are you sure? Tonight may be the night I never allow you to return’, said he, whoever he was, and Akako was immobilized.
Aoko resolutely answered, ‘I am. If this is the night you go, I want to see you one last time at least.’
‘...Very well. Come as you please.’
Akako could not believe it. How could this girl, who had not been to the opera for a full year yet, be allowed or even allow herself to shamelessly bring her lover to her quarters, when Akako’s suitors were stopped and beaten by the security at the entrance if too insistent, and above all, speak in such a calm voice after being literally shot at? Had Lucie and Aoko really come to become one? Had she actually become insane? And who could even love a woman that behaved so puerile anyway?! She did not let herself think further, and pushed furiously the door’s handle. ‘Miss Nakamori!’
Akako’s cry was met with a dead silence. The hanging rails full of costumes, the vanity with perfumes and makeup, the tall mirror, they were all perfectly in place, but neither the man or Aoko were here.
Like ghosts, they simply vanished.
~
‘There is no way around it’, Hakuba bitterly sighed as he looked through the windows of the director’s office.
Nakamori Ginzou hummed in agreement, breathing hard onto his cigarette to relieve his incredible irritation. ‘’Told you, Hakuba, I know he is hiding in the undergrounds, but this damn opera is a maze, and though I’ve been to every corner, none of our research ever led to anything concrete! Ah, screw that, I’ll call a construction team and make them destroy every brick of this cursed building!’
Thankfully, Hakuba discouraged such an idea. ‘Sir, think of what the world would think if we destroyed the opera only because we could not catch a mere thief! We would be ridiculed! Think of your reputation and the trust your superiors had put in you!’
‘That’s easy for you to say, you brat!’ The old man barked. ‘It isn’t your daughter that’s been kidnapped!’
‘Sir, please keep calm. Hasn’t Miss Momoi confirmed your daughter is barely scraped and resting in her dressing-room? Besides, Miss Koizumi saw her sprinting to the backstage after the shoots.’
‘Ah, yes they did, did they not...?’
Hakuba nodded. ‘Please let’s think rationally, if you let your emotions get you, we can never catch KID tonight!’
Nakamori groaned, but before any more sarcasm could come out of his mouth, the office’s door was promptly opened, letting in a totally out-of-breath Akako. ‘Ah, there goes this one’, Nakamori said, rolling eyes.
‘Miss Koizumi?’
The young woman took four difficult steps into the room, and suddenly punched Nakamori’s desk with her fist, looking at him dead in the eye.
‘Nakamori Aoko has disappeared.’
‘What!’ Nakamori exclaimed, staggering Hakuba with his gaze before rushing in order to tear his face apart. ‘You tickster! Scammer! Hustler! You are Phantom KID, aren’t you?! Show me your face and give me back my daughter, you little...!’
Hakuba let out a short gasp before dodging Nakamori, this one ending up involuntarily throwing himself to the ground and hitting a pile of cardboard in the process. ‘Miss Koizumi’, Hakuba called, ‘How could this be? You told me yourself you saw Miss Nakamori rushing backstage, and Miss Momoi confirmed it!’
After catching her breath, Akako explained, ‘She was in her dressing-room, I heard her voice, and she was with a man; but the instant I opened the only door, it was completely empty!’
‘This bastard tricked us again!’ Nakamori screamed again as he got up.
‘This is bad’, Hakuba said. ‘We have no way to follow him if we don’t know where his hideout is!...’
‘I know how we can go.’
Akako’s blunt affirmation made both the detective and the director blink in disbelief.
‘I found another way to the undergrounds’, she said.
~
Aoko blinked, the fresh humidity of the undergrounds’ corridor tickling her face. The mechanism of the mirror always was a little harsh in the change of atmosphere, no matter how many times one would use it. Except perhaps for its master.
Her eyes grew accustomed to the darkness that only reigned here, and she reached for a heavy candlestick she could somewhat see in the shadow. The moment she touched it, each of its candles’ strands lightened up, illuminating the narrow, damp corridor around her. Each of the water drops the walls transpired that fell on her made her shiver. In her precipitation, she did not think of changing clothes, and Lucie’s gruesome wedding dress stuck to her skin.
Doing her best not to mind her bare feet against the cold and slippery floor, leaving tiny footprints behind her, Aoko walked forward, following the crooked path with the only sound of water to accompany her. Every now and then, other hollow openings were to be found, but she knew that she needed to go forward, always, and never deviate.
After long minutes of such a sinister stroll, the corridor led up to the riverside of the underground lake. There, a tiny boat was waiting for her. She uncoupled a candle from her chandelier, and used it to light up the ones that were set up on the edge of the bark. Then, as calmly as ever, she climbed up into it, and unraveled the rope that tied it to the riverbank.
As soon as she tried to row the paddles, she noticed how surprisingly useless it was. Despite the fact that the lake had no tide, the boat was moving forward on its own. Captivated by the magic of it, Aoko admired the game of lights and shadows that played among the walls, and it was not until the boat crossed the lake entirely that she realized that, beneath the troubled green waters, an old rail was what drove the boat in a straight line, very alike to mechanisms of a train with its wagons.
‘You were never truly a ghost, after all’, she whispered to herself when setting foot on land again, all while the little boat turned back to his starting point.
A few more steps and she reached a strange door in window-dressing one could hardly discover with the naked eye, and engulfed herself into it.
An even stranger room welcomed her there. Circled, with a tree all-made of iron wires at the center, the light in here was similar to the one of a full-moon night: calm, cold, and prompt to make one incredibly uncomfortable.
On the walls, there were mirrors, mirrors, only mirrors that reflected this nightmare-like tree, and the second Aoko got closer, the door behind her closed itself, revealing another mirror, leaving the room without any escape.
Though she had gone through this room many times now, Aoko could not help but feel deeply frightened. He had never explained its purpose to her, she had never seen it in action, and the thought of what it could do scared her much more than whatever it would ever do. What if she stayed locked up here forever?...
Seeing all these mirrors circling her, making her already forget where she came from, distilled panic into her, and she could not help but knock desperately unto the nearest one she found. ‘KID! KID? It’s me, Aoko! I came! Please let me in!’
Instantly, a sound of unlocking echoed, and Aoko could see one opening. She did not think twice and rushed into it, ending up in a much darker room, where only the faint candles upon a dinner table could brighten this windowless cave, and illuminate the mask of its owner as he was sitting behind it. This, was the phantom’s dwelling place.
In front of her, phantom KID, wearing his usual mask that covered the upper half of his face and a black outfit, played with his card gun by spinning it with his gloved index, while his other hand held his face.
‘Good evening, professor’, Aoko muttered.
‘Well, hello to you too, my dear Lucie’, he answered, visibly amused by both her respect and fear. ‘You sure do make a radiant murderous bride!’
Aoko answered nothing to that, did not move in the slightest. He stopped playing with his gun, his tone of voice getting more serious. ‘Well. You wanted to come, and you are here. What is it you wanted to tell me? Much to my disarray, I am a talented magician, but not seer, and I doubt you wanted me to congratulate you for your performance tonight, did you?’
She remained silent for a few seconds, before snatching the pendant she wore off her neck, and throwing it across the table. KID caught it very easily.
‘I wanted to make sure you follow our deal. I have done everything you wanted, I even lied to my father and the detective he hired, followed every single of your lessons, wore this ridiculous gem on the representation- I let even these guys point guns on me! But now, now that everything is done, will you keep your promise? Will you finally leave the opera and my father alone?’ She pleaded despite herself.
Phantom KID took time to take in her every word, then smiled again.
‘I wouldn’t have been too chagrined to never see this junk again…’ He sadly said as he admired the jewel tangling in his hand, before turning back to Aoko. ‘Yes, you have my absolute word. From now on, Phantom KID will be no more but the ghost of a name.’
On these words, he gripped a candlestick, and raised it to his side. Only then did Aoko see the two attackers, both having fainted and tied to the same chair, a blindfold onto their eyes and a gag in their mouth. When spotting them, Aoko slightly backed off, impressed.
‘These guys are the two last ones I need to take revenge upon. Afterward, I’ll be… Free, I suppose’, he continued with gloomy eyes, as if himself was not convinced by his own words.
‘And… When you say, “take revenge upon”... Do you mean... ‘
‘Oh, Miss Nakamori, a young girl such as yourself should not even try to brush such an evil concept!’
‘Ah!! There you go calling Aoko a baby again! You better stop that!’ She suddenly cried out. ‘You’re barely older than I am, I know for sure! You’re being ridiculous, acting like an old man!’
She pouted and crossed her arms, shifting away from him just for the aspect of it. KID blinked, somewhat stunned, and a candid laugh came out of him.
It surprised Aoko to no end. She heard him laugh before, but it was always with a fake tone to it, as if he always was playing comedy and trying to reassure himself he was good at it- but never, ever in the six months she knew him, had she heard a laugh that felt so true. She looked at him intensely as his chuckle subsided, and he stood up and showed her the door.
‘Well, Miss Nakamori, I am very pleased I could see you one last time before the end of it all. Your father will worry sick if you remain here too long. Tell him that I am sorry, and that I’ll never be a bother again to any of you. You can go now: the door of the room will be opened for you, and the bark will guide you back to your dressing-room.’
Before she could say anything, he started to retreat into the darkness, and so Aoko dashed across the room, firmly catching the fabric of his sleeve.
‘Wait!!’
KID froze into place, then looked at her over his shoulder.
‘There was something else I wanted to ask you’, she pleaded. ‘And as the one who was able to “free” you, I entirely deserve it!’
Slowly, ever so slowly, KID turned toward her again.
‘Of course. Go ahead, ask your question.’
His sudden acceptance caught her quite off guard, and suddenly, unsure of how and why, she became shy.
‘Can… you show me your face? There is one last thing I need to… make sure of.’
Despite his mask, she felt his eyes delve into her in a way she had never experienced before, pouring nothing but more curiosity to what could be behind it.
‘Why don’t you see for yourself?’
He put down the chandelier he was holding and took her hand in his. For an instant, he stared intently at the bad scrap one of the bullets had caused to the side of her hand. It had stopped bleeding by then, and was not very deep but it did not hurt any less, and the contact alone made her wince at the pain. When she did, she swore she could see an odd melancholy dwelling in his eyes, as he caressed the burn ever so slightly.
He then guided her hand toward his face, and Aoko needed no more. A move of her palm, and the mask fell to the ground.
The face she found underneath was a painful one to look at, by far more painful than any bullet light scraps could ever be.
And, above all these things one could never faithfully describe, the scariest thing in all of this were the two red eyes she found there, a crimson red that was nowhere near mortality. Yet, despite all of that, she could still recognize him. Little by little, she put her soft hands upon his disfigured temples, Kuroba Kaito ’s temples, the childhood friend she lost years ago.
‘So it really was you…Why didn’t you tell me?! All this time… Did you even think of how much your disappearance hurt me? Of how long I have waited for an explanation, a mere sign that you were being alive, or anything really! Idiot! Jerk!’
All along she was speaking, tears came down streaming on her face, puddling with the bloody makeup she still wore, but none of her sudden outburst stopped him from drawing himself out of her embrace, and her heart broke in two instantly.
‘What for?’ He said, his tone suddenly severe, distancing himself from her. ‘For you to see how I must live like a rat in catacombs to survive and accomplish an act as selfish as revenge using you? Or to take me in pity because of my face, like a three-legged dog? No, thank you. Now that we won’t ever see each other again, it doesn't matter anymore that you know, that is why I let you take off my mask. There is no more to that.’
Aoko could not believe what she was hearing. She stayed petrified, though her mind yelled to her to catch him before it would to late -and as a compromise, her body raised her hand toward him. ‘Kaito, do you really think I’d ever be able to see you like that? No, I could not- I could never- Kaito, please-’ She stuttered, hesitant, not knowing how to tell him not to go.
‘As I said, it does not matter any longer.’
How cold! How egotistical! How selfish! It truly could not be anyone but Kaito to utter such heartless and fake words in a situation like this.  She knew he did not mean such a thing, though she only know him as a child -the fact was that he felt stuck, and therefore fleeing was the only thing he felt within his reach.
‘W-we could see each other again!’ Aoko protested. ‘Just tell me where you’ll be and I’ll come!...’
Kaito laughed. ‘I do not think you understand, Aoko. You belong to the light -and I belong to the darkness, now. With a face like mine, I’d scare anyone, you included. What you think to be affection toward me will soon turn into disgust and simple nostalgia, and you’ll end rejecting me too.’
‘Do you even hear yourself right now?!’ She exclaimed, raising her arm toward him. ‘There is no such thing as an unlovable person belonging in the darkness! There has never been! We could live together as normal people again, you and I!
He bitterly chuckled as he lowered his gaze to the ground. ‘And how, tell me? We are no brother and sister. In this city, the only way we could ever live together without eternally damaging your reputation is as husband and wife, and that is clearly out of questi…’
‘Idiot.’
Her interjection made him raise his eyes again, only to see Aoko obviously embarrassed, but somewhat… determined. As if she meant…
Oh. Oh.
Kaito did not know how to answer that. And so the time distorted itself as the silence went on, him deep in thoughts, so deeply examining the rests of his Pandora-poisoned heart, trying to convince himself this was purely hopeless- and yet, finding himself to hope .
Long minutes later, he let out a sigh, a sigh he seemed to have waited his entire life to let out.
‘Alright. I… am willing to try.’
‘Kaito!’
Her little feet taped and taped across the tiling, until he found her arms wrapped around him -a gesture he thought he would never experience again. This felt… nice.
For the very first time, in a very, very long time, his heart, so young and yet so old, felt relief, hope, and -dare he say it?- happiness.
‘What is this room...? ’
‘Keep it down! That damn KID could be anywhere near! ’
This unexpected dialogue that could be heard through the walls made Kaito and Aoko reluctantly detach from one another. ‘This… is father’s voice!’ She whispered, utterly surprised. ‘Tch’, Kaito spitted, ‘They must have discovered the secret passageway and followed your footprints.’
As if it was a reflex, Kaito put his hand underneath the table and pulled a lever. Automatically, locking sounds resonated, and he signed Aoko to take his hand, which she did, as they made their way near the door behind which Hakuba, Akako and Mr Nakamori were. He beckoned her to stay silent.
‘Hey! The door behind us just locked itself! ’
‘This is no good at all… ’
‘Hello, director’, Kaito suddenly called with a cocky smile. ‘Long time no see!’
‘KID! YOU BASTARD! GIVE ME BACK MY DAUGHTER AND SURRENDER!’ A bunch of punches again the mirrors accompanied
‘You’re really in no place to negotiate, I fear, my dear director’, Kaito snickered. ‘Do you know what the room you’re in is?’
‘Oh, why would I care, you miserable little…!’
‘Oh, but you certainly should! This is here your destiny will play out! See, life in a damp underground may be more than a little boring, sometimes. What you are in right now is a torture chamber on another kind, you see!’
Aoko stared at him with enormous eyes as he said that, silently repeating the fatal words ‘torture chamber’, and yet, Kaito continued, more amused than ever. ‘A torture chamber…’ Hakuba said again.
‘Yes! But the damages it inflicts are more mental than physical. The mirrors you see can be used to simulate any landscapes there are in the world. I can send you to either Sahara or an Ecuadorian forest all the way it pleases me, with an approximate climate of course, and as you’ll never find the exit, you’ll lose your sense of orientation, reality, and perhaps even become totally insane! I have never tested it out on anyone, but I am most thrilled to try it tonight for my finale!’
‘ What… ’
Kaito felt Aoko’s hard grip on his arm most vigorously as she whispered with a torn-out voice: ‘No! Kaito, no!’ While Mr Nakamori blurted out another row of flourished insults at him, he could not stop to laugh as he murmured to Aoko ‘I’m joking, joking!’, finally making her let go.
Kaito picked up the main conversation, if that could be called so, again. ‘ However , my fiancée over here isn’t very fond of the idea, and I take my pride in being a gentleman’, he chirped, ‘So I’ll make an exception for tonight, especially for my father-in-law. Good evening to you, director!’
‘Fiancée?! Father-in-law?! Has he gone nuts or something? Hey, KID, explain yourself! KID! Are you hearing me?! Get back here this instant!!’
Kaito said no more, and smiled at Aoko. ‘Let’s go’, he announced. ‘We’ll have all the time to explain ourselves later.’
She showed a little hesitance, but knowing her father was obviously in no condition to listen to her in any way right now, she nodded, smiled, and tightened her grip on Kaito’s hand. ‘Yes. We came as ghosts, let us disappear as ghosts!’
‘KID! Get back here this instant! KID! KIIID!’
Mentally and physically exhausted by the entire evening, Akako had not manifested anything ever since they had crossed the underground lake, and as soon as they arrived in the tree room, she withdrew off the situation, sitting on the ground, her back against a mirror, and an overcoat on her shoulders, which Hakuba kindly lent to her. For the first time in her life, she felt like crying like a little girl again. But she could not. She truly could not.
When KID seemed to have been definitely gone, and no door seemed to open, she lost hope. They were trapped, and she was the only way they could escape now. They needed her magic.
It was dangerous, she knew it was. But I have no choice , she thought, or I’ll end up being an emaciated corpse between these walls! And I don’t want to! I really, really don’t want…!
Suddenly, they heard a clicking sound, and one of the mirrors opened itself.
Oh, maybe not.
Nakamori was naturally the first one to rush to the home of the phantom -but there, then found nothing, absolutely nothing, except a still burning candlestick, a dinner table and its chair, and a most singular note.
Ladies and gentlemen,
You are the guests of honor of a ceremony like no other!
Before your amazed eyes, the ghost of a disfigured magician shall marry the ghost of a killer bride: a wedding beyond the mortal realm!
Little did the three of them knew that, the day after, such invitations would be overflowing everywhere in the capital: in the opera, theaters, music-halls, town hall, cafés, streets, the sewers and the desk of the Emperor himself!
Needless to say, the whole capital was outpouring with excitement, as we all would.

Head empty
Only Saguru being affectionate with the Ekoda gang.
Lots of hugs, picking up and cuddling. Especially with Kaito, the moment Kaito within reaching distance there's contact. Lunch-time? You mean Kaito-sitting-in-Saguru's-lap-time? No personal space only cuddles. Big Dog-piles of the friend group
Saguru has a big bed where they all lie together just enjoying the time together heads on laps, arm in arms

disappearing trick — SaguKai
━━━━━━━
fandom | magic kaito
pairing | kuroba kaito x hakuba saguru
genre | angst to fluff :3
w.c | 2.1k
━━━━━━━
It was a heist went wrong.
So, so wrong.
There were explosions and gunshots, all of which Hakuba was about 99.99% sure wasn’t in KID’s itinerary of the night. He remembered catching a glimpse of a torn white cape, the grimace of pain clear as day despite the lack of helicopters overhead, and men dressed in black.
“KID—!” Hakuba had yelled, which, looking back, was not the smartest thing he could’ve done. The barrels of two guns instantaneously locked on him, much to the phantom thief’s horror.
It seemed like it was the end for Hakuba Saguru.
But of course, KID always loved to meddle in things that didn’t involve him. And so he did what he always did best.
KID was a performer, after all. He specialised in attracting his audience’s attention to him. Flashing a cocky smirk towards Hakuba’s direction, even though there was a stream of blood trickling down his cheek, the phantom thief disappeared into the night with a loud bang, taking the two men with him.
Kuroba Kaito was ‘kidnapped’ the same night.
According to Aoko, who had been in the Nakamouri house when the teen was attacked, there had been a loud crash, gunshots, and yelling. The girl had hid under the kitchen counter in fright, hoping and praying with all her heart that Kaito hadn’t been home at the time of the break-in.
As it turned out, he was.
The crime scene investigators turned Kuroba’s house upside down, finding multiple signs that the teen boy had been shot, if the splatters of blood (That all had Kaito’s DNA) was any indication. It was also concluded by the investigators that Kaito put up a hell of a fight, as there were signs of his magic tricks all through the house.
Hakuba was still being treated for shock at the heist location when Detective Nakamouri received a call from his devastated, hysterical daughter, who sobbed so loudly through the phone that the blonde detective overheard.
It was only one disaster after another.
For once, Hakuba chose to stay out of the crime scene, instead stroking Aoko’s back as comfortingly as he could, trying not to think about Kaito’s body, abandoned in some dark alley dumpster. His coat was soaked through with splotches of her tears, but he didn’t care much, because he himself felt like crying, too.
━━━━━━━
School the next day was eerily quiet. Practically everyone had heard of Kaito’s kidnapping, and if they didn’t, Aoko’s swollen eyes were a dead giveaway that something had happened to the playful teen. The teacher kept glancing up, as if she was waiting for an interruption, only to flick her eyes onto the empty seat at the corner of the classroom. The topic lingered like a dark cloud above the classroom, and no one dared to even mention the name ‘Kaito’ when Aoko was within hearing distance.
“He’s alive.”
Hakuba glanced up after a few moments of silence, realising that Akako was talking to him. “What?”
“Kuroba.” Akako continued impatiently. “He’s alive.”
The blonde detective couldn’t help but snort. “And how did you come to that conclusion? Did your crystal ball tell you that?”
Judging by the glare the female shot in his direction, she didn’t appreciate his snark, but Hakuba just couldn’t be bothered at the moment. “He won’t go down this easily.” Akako stated, as if she’d seen Kaito alive with her own two eyes. Granted, the image hadn’t exactly been clear when she used her seer powers on him, but she could go as far as saying that the magician was still breathing.
“Look. He was shot.” Hakuba interrupted emotionlessly. “Even if the gunshot wasn’t fatal, he’s lost a lot of blood.”
“He won’t go out that easily. You’ll see.”
━━━━━━━
Kuroba Kaito was pronounced dead after three months. KID went back into retirement— At least, that’s what the KID division announced after no sight of any heist in the horizon.
After a long consideration, Hakuba decided to leave Japan behind— Along with the memories of KID and Kaito— And return to Britain. Some would call him cowardly, and he would admit, yes, it was cowardly of him to run away like that, but as far as he was concerned, he didn’t care what others thought of him.
Sure, Aoko was a little upset, but Akako had reassured her that she wasn’t going anywhere. He did feel a little bad for leaving Nakamouri behind— All her friends were disappearing, one by one, after all—
Disappearing.
That was KID’s— Kaito’s last trick, Hakuba thought tearily, hastily ushering the tears away as he packed the last of his clothes into the luggage bag. A disappearing trick gone wrong— And the phantom thief KID, Kuroba Kaito— Two sides of the same coin— Dropped off the surface of the planet, never to be heard from again.
But there was no point in crying over spilled milk anymore.
“Saguru-kun, there’s a man looking for you outside.” His housekeeper knocked on the door, informing him monotonously. “He said he has a few things to tell you before you leave Japan.”
A quick peer out of the window gave him a glimpse of dark brown hair— A familiar stature and height, a relaxed pose—
Hakuba had never dashed out of his room that fast in his entire life. All composure and calamity was forgotten as he practically barrelled down the stairs, narrowly missing a few boxes of belongings he had wrapped up the days prior. The door burst open with a tremendous bang! as Hakuba hurried down the front steps of his house, hoping, praying, pleading that the face that he would meet belonged to—
“Kudou-kun?” The tone of disappointment couldn’t be avoided as Hakuba remembered just how alike the detective and the magician looked. If he was asked, the two were definitely genetically related at some degree or another. “How may I help you today?” His tone was terribly strained; he had had expectations, and he had been let down.
Kudou Shinichi, as the great detective that rivalled many others, took quick note of Hakuba’s inner turmoil. “Hakuba-kun. I have news that you might want to... Think about before you leave Japan.”
“Go on.” Hakuba said bitterly. Nothing could stop him from leaving Japan, he thought. Not when every corner reminded him of the man that kept him on his feet.
“Kuroba Kaito is very much alive.” Kudou said casually, with no prior preparation or whatsoever. Hakuba looked as if he was just hit by a freight train, stunned and dazed by the words that destroyed everything he knew about life. “He’s been staying undercover to help the FBI take down the Black Organisation, who, as if seems, was after Pandora as well. Because he’s been missing for three months, its’ going to be very hard for him to explain his absence— So he has requested for me to pass you this letter in his stead.”
The thoughts running through Saguru’s head as the slim letter was received into his head were wild. Kaito was alive? He was involved with the FBI? What was the Black Organisation— And forget the Black Organisation, what the hell was Pandora? And why couldn’t Kaito have passed him the letter himself?
“Well, I’m going to get going.” Kudou smiled gently. “See you around, Hakuba-kun.”
━━━━━━━
It seems like your detective skills have mellowed since my absence, Hakubastard. Your observational ability is... Mediocre, to say the least. Anyway, I suppose I should provide you with an explanation (Although I would love to go world-hopping and leave you in pursuit of the truth for the rest of your life), but I guess I owe you this much after just upping and leaving like that. Those gun wounds hurt like hell, but they weren’t going to nuff this magician up that easily. I still had a couple tricks up my sleeve— It was nice seeing you all worried about me, though! So you do care~
Anyway, its still not too safe for me to appear publicly in Japan. I’ve sent a letter to Aoko, so don’t worry about filling her in. I left the meeting location in your bedroom. Exactly a month from now. Better set a reminder on that pocket watch of yours, tantei.
With love malice,
Kuroba Kaito
“My bedroom...?” Hakuba murmured to himself, realisation striking like a flash of lightning. A quick inspection of his room turned out with a slip of yellow paper: Rivals shall meet once more, in the romantic city people adore; When the clock strikes a quarter and by the Seine shop corner.
Saguru rushed over to his bedroom window, eyes flicking up and down the nearby streets to find Kudou Shinichi’s silhouette, but he came up empty handed— For that wasn’t Kudou Shinichi at all... Because who else would break into his bedroom just to leave a riddle?
It didn’t take long for Hakuba to figure out the time, date, and location— Kudou— No, Kaito had said so himself. Exactly a month from then— In the ‘romantic city people adore’— Which would be Paris— ‘clock strikes a quarter’— At a quarter of a day, which would be 6am— And by the ‘Seine shop corner’— So at a coffee shop next to River Seine.
“Baa-san!” Saguru called out into the manor, a smile on his face. “Cancel my flight ticket and book one to Paris instead.”
━━━━━━━
Paris at 6am was quite the pretty sight. The sun was barely rising over the horizon, little splays of light shimmying over the river surface, bathing Paris in a fine, gold threads of sunshine. Not that many cafes were open at the crack of dawn, which made it even easier for Saguru to track down his cafe.
The little coffee shop by the Seine provided an amazing view as Saguru enjoyed his morning coffee. He had taken a seat outside the cafe, the streets silent in a peaceful, docile manner, early birds already leaving their nests for the worms that were promised.
The latte in his hands felt warm, inducing heat into his frozen fingers. Hakuba had never felt that on edge in his entire life— Would Kaito show up?
“Lovely morning, no?” An old man commented, plopping into the seat opposite Saguru. “I love watching the sunrise from here.”
Hakuba raised an eyebrow, looking for details of a disguise. The fat seemed genuine— The voice was deep and velvety, a little rough and raspy around the edges— The wrinkles around the eyes looked authentic— But he had seen the quality of KID’s work, and he wasn’t taking his chances.
“Indeed,” Saguru agreed with a pleasant hum, French rolling off his tongue smoothly. “Say, mister, what do you think about magic tricks?”
“Ah, I think they’re quite quaint.” The old man replied in his deep voice, eyes forming crescent lines as he smiled. “What do you think of them, young man?”
Saguru placed his latte back onto the cup. “I think magic tricks are nice,” He started softly, making firm eye contact with the old man, French rolling off his tongue smoothly. “But I hate disappearing tricks the most.”
“Oh?” The old man was confused, clearly missing the memo. “Why so—?”
“Good morning, sir, can I take your order?” A voice pricked into Hakuba’s memory, triggering some sort of mechanism. It was the same tone, frequency, wavelength— The only thing different was the dialect and accent.
Saguru looked up right into Kaito’s violet eyes, the latter dressed in a waiter’s uniform. A soft smile spread over the magician’s lips as he winked, Hakuba’s jaw dropping as his gaze returned to the man in front of him.
“Ah, a cappuccino please. And one slice of carrot cake.”
“Of course.” Kaito nodded pleasantly. “Right away, sir. And you?”
Hakuba took longer to find his voice than he would’ve liked. “Just a cup of black coffee, please.”
“Is that all?” Kaito hummed, scribbling down the orders on a piece of paper.
“Yes, thank you.”
Hakuba laid back against the chair, a sigh slipping from his lips as he smiled continuing his conversation with the old man, who was still very much confused.
“Ah, but I find disappearing tricks interesting,” The old man commented, chuckling slightly. “It’s always so magical when the reappearance happens, no?”
The blonde detective hummed, watching the dark-haired magician busy himself inside the shop. “I suppose I’ll have to agree with that.”
━━━━━━━
this thing has been sitting in my drafts for four months and its time for it to see the light of day~

Fandom meme, O, T and Z
Thank you for asking! <3
O - Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of
I picked a random song on my drawing playlist, it ended up being Don’t Stop me Now (Queen). The song reminds me of Robin x Chrom from Fire Emblem Awakening by weird thought association. xD
Don’t Stop me Now -> Smash Bros trailer meme where they put that music playing and it perfectly fits with what is happening on the trailer -> Robin is on Smash Bros -> Chrom is also on Smash Bros -> I ship them
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)
I have a hard time remembering things on the spot, so here are some things that immediately come to my mind ;w; (I should say that I'm really open minded about other headcanons and those are just ones I strongly headcanon rather than die defending)
1) Kaito is unquestionably non-binary (I headcanon him as agender).
2) Hakuba is Aro (He can be romance favorable, but doesn’t experience romantic attraction. I usually headcanon him indifferent regarding romance).
3) Akako is a lesbian that only wants all men in her control as a superiority complex and not because she is interested in them.
4) There is nothing straight about any of those teenagers in the DCMK world. (Bi/Pan/Ace people are a thing and a m/f canon pairing doesn’t make them straight. Or make the ship a hetero pairing, for the matter)
5) Shinichi and Hakuba are autistic. Kaito is neurodivergent somewhere, although I’m still defining him (headcanon change from time to time).
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go (prompts optional but encouraged)
I recently realised that between the Ekoda Gang, Aoko is the only one that doesn’t have a costume to go to heists. Kaito has his Kid costume, Hakuba has the Sherlock cosplay and Akako has her sorcerer outfit.
She dressed up as police force for the Nightmare heist, yes, but it was an one time thing. BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, she also dressed as her father for the ski competition. There is a police theme going on with her, so if she had choose a costume to start using at Kid Heists, it probably would be a bad police cosplay.
(If the Kid Capture Brigade becomes canon in the manga, she could make the bad police cosplay the Brigade uniform and be the only one that always wears the costume, while the others only occasionally amuse her by wearing it)
Alternatively, she will just keep judging the other three about their clothing choices.
(The plot twist is that Momoi secretly also has a costume and goes to heist in it for N reasons. Maybe secretly a thief or a vigilant? If only she could get a little character development... or anything, really)
Ask me things! :D

Be a Better Me Ch2
Hey, thanks for the positive response guys! I wasn’t expecting so many people to be interested in Robo-Kaito
Chapter 2
The sound of car tires and the sight of headlights breaks the quiet sounds of animals and distant traffic. Jii’s old car rolls up past Kaito’s vantage point in the tree. It takes a moment to unfold his body and drop to the ground below. It feels horribly wrong that he has aches and pains in light of recent discoveries but he supposes if the mad doctor was anything, he must have been a perfectionist that had an attention to detail and a strong desire to mimic reality.
Jii rounds his car to get to Kaito’s side, taking him by the shoulders. Kaito must look a mess between rooting around in a burned and blasted building and sitting in a tree for hours. “Are you alright?” Jii asks, looking for injuries. “What are you doing here in the middle of the night?”
“I’ve been here all day,” Kaito says. He wants to lean against Jii, to take comfort he doesn’t deserve from the closest thing he has to a grandfather. He’s going to break Jii’s heart in a minute though. It wouldn’t be fair.
“Where is this?” Jii asks, frowning.
“Remember how I told you about the robot? The one that pretended to be me?” Because he’d told Jii, of course he had, about the copycat heist that hadn’t been Kaito.
“Yes?” Jii says, bewildered. “That was months ago.”
Kaito laughs hollowly. “Yeah. Months.” He takes a breath. “This is the lab. It’s. Last night there was.” He fails to make the words come, Jii looking more and more worried. This isn’t like Kaito, except he’s not Kaito, except that he is. Kaito shakes his head. “It’s… easier to show you.”
He pulls free, and walks toward the lab like a man facing a firing squad. Jii follows, not asking questions even though he looks like he wants to. Kaito skirts the blood stain, lets his eyes skitter past the memory machine even as Jii takes the details in. he can see Jii’s eyes flicker to the metal skeleton bits before Kaito inches down the stairs.
It’s taking everything Kaito has to keep his expression blank and to keep the panic down. His pocket flashlight isn’t much better than it was the first time, but Jii surprisingly pulls out a second one and it helps.
“Where is this?” Jii asks, his light bouncing off a half-made bed and a water stained ceiling tile.
“A lab,” Kaito says. “And a home I guess.” He approaches the door to the glass case. Kaito doesn’t want to go in there. It’s the last thing he wants to do, but he has to. It’s only right to. “This way.” He squeezes through the gap. The light is half on, a dimmed brownout instead of a pitch black room, so it must be a case of a loose wire. It’s amazing anything is running at all. He hangs back by the freezer as Jii manages to ease himself into the room. Kaito can’t get himself to take another step forward no matter how much he should.
“What,” Jii says after a long moment of silence, “am I looking for?”
Kaito takes a shaky breath. “The case. The glass case. I’m sorry.”
Jii steps forward and the case hisses open. He’s dead silent as he stares in it, then there’s the softest sound of pain. It pierces through Kaito like a bullet.
Kaito hugs himself, shaking. Why does he keep shaking? “I’m sorry,” he says again. “I didn’t know. I’m sorry.” He feels small, like he’s standing at Toichi’s funeral again only it’s not his father, it’s himself and it’s so horribly wrong and nothing will make it better. “I don’t know what to do,” he says, voice cracking. “I don’t know what to do.”
“How long?” Jii asks, sounding like he aged a decade in ten seconds.
“Since I knew? Last night. But. I have to—he must have been—since the robot heist at least.” What if it was longer and he just… didn’t know? That’s terrifying. He has to believe that it wasn’t before then.
“And you…?” Jii asks, not looking away from Kaito’s body.
“I took an x-ray. On Oyaji—on Toichi’s machine. It’s. I’m. I eat and sleep and feel and hurt, I swear, I didn’t know.” He feels like the worst creature alive and then realizes he doesn’t know if alive even truly applies. “There’s metal and wires and screws and I don’t know what I bleed but it must not be blood.” His hair grows. He doesn’t know what the hell he is. “I’m sorry.” If he says it enough maybe it will mean something.
Jii breathes once, slow and deliberate before turning around. Kaito flinches, he isn’t sure if he’s expecting anger or hate or what; he’s feeling plenty of that self-directed already. He isn’t expecting Jii’s expression to crumple or the way he pulls him in for a hug.
Kaito’s eyes sting. “Why?”
“Kaito-bocchama is still Kaito-bocchama,” Jii says slowly and deliberately.
“Jii, I’m not human. I’m not even. I’m not even Kaito.”
“You eat and sleep and bleed,” Jii says, repeating Kaito’s words back at him. “You cry.” Kaito’s breath hitches. “You’ve been Kaito every day since the robot. You feel and love.”
“But I’m not him!” It would hurt less to be shot or cut open. “I’m just some memories and wires.”
“You’re Kaito,” Jii says firmly, tears in his voice. And Kaito crumbles because what else can he be? He’s all of Kaito that’s left and not creepily preserved flesh.
Jii holds him and Kaito clings back until their tears dry and he’s no longer shaking. It’s amazing he still has tears to cry.
“What now?” Kaito asks, lost.
Jii holds tight for one long, slightly painful moment before letting go. He looks at the glass case. “We find a way to get him out of here. And get as much of the research and other things someplace safe as well.”
“I kind of want to burn it,” Kaito admits.
“Your body works differently now,” Jii says, like Kaito’s merely swapped a flesh and bone model for an upgraded mechanical one. “We’ll need whatever information we can get to take care of it in the future.”
“…I probably can’t grow older,” Kaito says. No matter how well he mimics a person, the doctor can’t have managed everything. And then there’s the fact that technology on the whole doesn’t have a long life. His whole body is experimental. He's a ticking clock with who knew how long on the countdown.
“We’ll figure out what you need,” Jii says firmly.
“…There’s what looks like false skin and blood samples in the freezer,” Kaito says.
Jii nods and pushes Kaito gently toward the door.
“But…”
“This isn’t something to do tonight or alone.” The two of them wouldn’t be able to pry the door open enough to get the glass case or freezer out of the room let alone up the stairs and out of the building. As Jii takes over with quiet authority for once, Kaito is almost glad to let go. He’s in no position to think logistics right now.
Jii drives Kaito home and Kaito is exhausted but he can’t sleep. Not in the car and not after Jii has gone, leaving quiet assurances that he will figure out a way to get everything that looks important from the lab somewhere secure.
A machine shouldn’t need sleep in the first place.
He stays awake until the sun is starting to come up. No amount of exhaustion is enough to make him feel human.
o*O*o
Kaito should have taken another sick day. If the worried furrow on Aoko’s face meant anything, he must look like hell. He didn’t though for all the good it does. He isn’t paying a bit of attention in class. Heck, even Hakuba’s looked over a few times. Even Akako. He can’t do this today. He can’t just smile and laugh and pretend that everything is normal and nothing’s changed. He can’t pretend to be Kaito today.
He goes to the nurse at lunch before anyone can stop him to talk. She takes his temperature and Kaito has no idea how this body reads as slightly warmer than baseline human, but it does. He’s left in a dim, curtained off area to just sit and rest the best he’s able, which admittedly isn’t much.
The problem is that there’s no way to fix this. He can’t bring Kaito back. He doesn’t even know if he’s a good enough replacement. No one noticed. But then who would? Kaito has only known Jii a few months, his mother is never home, and Kaito has been distancing from Aoko to protect his secret identity as Kid for a while now. Hakuba and Akako? They never met Kaito when he was still alive. They wouldn’t even know what to look for. Kaito’s not even sure what to look for.
But then again, there’s a list of little idiosyncrasies. His greater difficulty swimming—he has metal bones and wire tendons now. Surprisingly he doesn’t actually weigh much more than before; Kaito had put it down to greater muscle mass. But metal doesn’t have the buoyancy of a human body. The changes in his balance can be blamed on the slight differences and inaccuracies in the skeletal and ‘muscular’ structure of this body. His hands having the occasional trouble with certain bits of dexterity could be explained by that too. There’s a possibility that his body processes data and can react faster than before. Not as fast as the robot that tried to kill him, but faster than human Kaito ever could.
He doesn’t seem to have the oddities of the other robot. He can’t make his neck grow or shoot from his elbows. His skin can’t peel off painlessly. He feels human in every way. He bruises and heals. There’s a scab on his finger to prove it. He wasn’t built, it seems, to be a robot the way the other had been, but to be a person and Kaito’s not sure if that’s a blessing or a curse. If it makes his existence better or worse.
He isn’t Kaito but he is.
Kaito closes his eyes. It’s not sleeping, but it’s probably as close as he’s going to get for a while.
o*O*o
Jii’s friend somehow gets all the mad doctor’s remaining work in his basement. Kaito’s body is there too, though Kaito refuses to seek it out. He’s still waiting to call his—Kaito’s—his mother about it. That’s… he still doesn’t know how to tell her. The thought of saying it out loud, seeing her smile crumble into the same dead-eyed grief he’d seen with his father has him paralyzed. Kaito’s never thought of himself as a fearful person, or one to let it win, but in this he can’t win. It’s not like his fish phobia. That, at the end of the day, won’t actually hurt him or anyone else. This can hurt him and hurt him and hurt everyone he loves.
Kaito sits in a chair as Jii’s friend sets up an x-ray machine of his own. Kaito wasn’t sure what to expect, but a cheerful older man with a love of word puzzles both is and isn’t the level of eccentricity he’d been braced for. This is the guy who made Kaito a rocket powered scooter and roller skates. He also apparently blows up his own workplace on the regular if the roped off side of the house is anything to go by.
Jii introduces him as Doctor Agasa. Considering the last doctor Kaito dealt with is the one who killed him, it made him uncomfortable until Agasa cheerfully said he could just call him Professor.
Kaito can do Professor. He doesn’t have any baggage tied to that.
He wonders how Jii convinced the Professor to help or if he’s just the sort of person who is happy for a challenge. Does he know there’s a corpse in his basement?
The Professor smiles, and Kaito, keeping his mask in place, smiles back. “I just want to have a few full body scans,” the Professor says, “so we have them on hand if there’s any need to reference how things are supposed to look in the future.”
“Do you think you’d be able to fix anything if it went wrong?” Kaito asks.
“Eh…” The Professor gives an uncomfortable laugh. “Well, I have a lot to read up on, so please take care not to get injured for a while if you can.”
“Right.”
It’s a simple matter of holding still and moving only where the Professor wants to get all the shots. Kaito looks at them afterward with a mix of revulsion and fascination. If the body wasn’t his… It would be interesting, almost artistic in how it is put together. But it is his body and he hates its unnaturalness and everything that means.
“I know you told me what happened,” the Professor says to Jii as they look at Kaito’s robotic body in black and white scans, “but if I wasn’t looking at this with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it. Whoever built this body was incredibly skilled.”
“He’s also incredibly dead,” Kaito says tensely. Like Kaito is dead. “Excuse me, I need to…” Kaito trails off and leaves the room. He climbs up to the little observatory and onto the roof.
Kaito’s always felt better in high places. There’s fewer people, the air is clear, and he’s not trapped. The world is open above and around him and some part of him, the part of him that spent hours daydreaming as a child, still feels like if he closed his eyes and wished hard enough he’d grow wings and fly. The glider is as close as he can get to that.
Professor Agasa lives in a mansion-turned-laboratory. It’s a lot of space for one man. He must make good money doing inventing. Whoever lives in this neighborhood must be pretty well off too. Take the mansion next door; it’s a very different style, but equally big as the good Professor’s home. Kaito wonders who lives there and if they’re like Agasa or more like Hakuba. Hakuba’s home is as big as the two mansions put together, but then Hakuba is a grandson of a major innovative scientific lab owner and the son of Tokyo’s superintendent general of the police force. Hakuba was born with a proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. Kaito’s not poor by any means, but his own home is maybe half the size of Agasa’s neighbor’s place. For all that Toichi was an amazing magician with world renown, he hadn’t spent his money on property.
Knowing what Kaito knows now, a lot of that money had to be going toward Toichi’s work as Kid. It still did technically; smoke bombs, disguises, and materials for magic tricks weren’t exactly cheap.
Kaito sighs. The fresh air helps, but it can’t solve his problems.
He holds his hand up against the sun. It does the thing all hands do, going red at the fleshy bits where the light hits and staying dark in the center. It feels like it should be different but it isn’t. Kaito’s hands are the same as he can remember them being. Faint scars, calluses, slightly crooked pinky and all. He doesn’t know how the doctor managed to get the details right. He has the right moles, the right scars, the right wear on his body. His fingerprints don’t quite match but they’re close enough to pass at a glance. He still isn’t sure that he was only kidnapped two days. Odds are he’ll never find out if it was longer. The only one who might have known is the Kaito that’s dead. Or perhaps the other robot-Kaito, but he’s dead too. There’s something there, losing two of himself with the same face and memories, something to be said but he’s not sure what.
Maybe he just has rotten luck.
There’s a child in the street heading toward Agasa’s house. Kaito watches idly. Maybe it’s Agasa’s neighbor. Or, Kaito rethinks as the boy stops at Agasa’s gate, maybe it’s a grandson or great nephew. The boy looks up and meets Kaito’s eyes. He pales like he saw a ghost and Kaito steps away from the edge of the roof.
He’s not up to interacting with people, not even a child.
Kaito meets Jii in the stairwell on his way down. There’s grandfatherly worry on his face and Kaito feels guilty all over again. He dredges up a smile for him and it almost looks sincere. “I just needed some air,” he says.
“Of course, Kaito-bocchama,” Jii says gently.
The front door opens and closes, the child from a moment ago calling out a greeting. Kaito listens, hearing the welcoming tone in Agasa’s reply before shaking his head.
“We should go.”
JIi nods.
“Is everything…” Kaito bites his lip. “Will everything be okay?” The body. The notes. Trusting the Professor.
“Hiroshi-san hasn’t let me down before,” Jii says. “Everything will be fine.”
“Right.” Downstairs is Kaito’s body, pristine and perfect in a glass box. If this were a fairy tale, a princess would swoop in with true love’s kiss and wake him up. A modern day Snow White. But Kaito’s body is dead, not asleep, and people don’t wake up from the dead in reality.
If Kaito’s body broke, could this mind just be transferred to a new one?
Or will he just die, erased like an unsaved data file, gone in mind and body and presumably soul?

“I don’t understand what’s going on,” he hears Aoko say to Keiko. “Kaito hasn’t been himself. I’m worried.”
“It’s Kaito,” Keiko says. “He’s probably caught up in making plans for a new trick.”
“Maybe…”
“You’re his best friend. I’m sure if it was anything serious he’d come to you.”
Aoko smiles, tense around her eyes. “Yeah. Yeah, he would… He would.”
Kaito hates himself more.
o*O*o
“Something’s different,” Hakuba says, sharp and too observant.
“Different?” Kaito laughs, joker mask in place. “Really? Are you sure you’re not just not getting enough sleep? Kid running you ragged?”
Hakuba scowls. “Kuroba,” he says, low and dangerous.
“Aw, did I hit a sore spot? Sorry, but you detective critics will never reach the pinnacle of amazing that is Kaitou Kid’s showmanship.” Kaito does a little showy hand wave. “You should just stop trying.”
“I will figure it out,” Hakuba says.
Kaito grins, grins, grins. “Of course you will, detective.”
Hakuba grits his teeth.
It’s a brittle win.
o*O*o
“I’m fine, Kaa-san,” Kaito says, smiling at the video call. “I’ve just been busy lately with my night life.”
“Maybe it’s time to take a break,” his mother says, playing with the sunglasses in her hair. “It’s not going to hurt anything if you take some time to rest.”
“And miss all the opportunities of limited time gem showings?” Kaito says. “Nah. I know what I’m doing. I’ve got this whole thief thing down pretty well I think.”
“You’re doing great at it, Kai-chan, but it won’t help anyone if you run yourself ragged. Take a break, sleep more, take Aoko on a date.” She wiggled her eyebrows, teasing.
“Kaa-san,” Kaito groaned. “No.”
“Yes. You’ve been flirting for ages.”
“It’s just flirting.” Kaito had been distancing before because of Kid and now there’s another layer to it. One more reason it’s not going to work out for him. “I don’t have time for anything like that.”
“Kaito,” his mother says, exasperated. “You’re only a teenager once.”
He might be a teenager forever. He laughs it off. “I have plenty of time to be a teenager without dating.”
“Anything else new in your life?” Chikage asks.
It’s on the tip of his tongue to answer and answer truthfully.
In the end he can’t kill the cheerful light in his mother’s eyes. Kaito smiles. “No, I’m fine. It’s just the same old same old. Being a phantom thief is becoming a routine.”
She laughs and tells him about a show she’s working with and Kaito listens with a smile, mind ages away. He can’t tell her. He can’t. Kaito doesn’t want to lose this, whatever little bit he and his mother still have.
“Goodnight, Kai-chan, I love you!” she says in chirpy English at the end of the call.
“Have a good day, Kaa-san,” Kaito says. “Love you too.”
If a robot can love, he loves fiercely. He loves and he breaks his own heart by existing instead of the real Kaito.
He lives in fear that one day his mother will look at him like he’s a monster wearing her child’s face. In his worst moments, he acknowledges that in a way, he actually is that. Metal and wires, a mask of a boy that died too young.
o*O*o
Something had to break. It’s just Kaito’s luck that that something is him.
It’s not the first time his glider has crashed, not the second or third or even fourth, but it’s a bad crash. The heist went off fine. There were no complications with the police. There was just a sniper he hadn’t seen and sudden pain fogging his mind and reaction times enough that he’d spiraled and caught half a tree on the way down.
The tree probably saved his life, but that doesn’t stop Kaito from fading in and out of consciousness, tangled up in his bent and broken glider. There’s a horrible buzzing in his head and too much red dripping from his shoulder. Shot. Through and through? Or graze? He tries to move and almost blacks out from pain as it radiates like fire from his right leg, a shoulder, and at least three of his ribs.
Kaito would love to say he doesn’t make a sound similar to a dying puppy, but he does, a thin high, whine rising to almost a shriek as his brain receives pain feedback in redoubling waves. He can’t move. In fact some parts don’t seem to be responding at all. He pants, trying to keep awake and push past the pain to at least see if he can reach his phone in his chest pocket. It’s probably broken, but if not, he can call Jii. Have him set up something at the Professor’s place because it’s not as if he can take this to a hospital
Moving his good arm is agony and he moans, fishing out the cell phone. It’s cracked, still functional though, and his fingers fumble against chipped glass to reach his contacts. Kaito’s vision blurs. It’s not quite right how it does it either, more like the jumpy blink of a satellite TV struggling for a signal than properly messed up eyes. It’s the first time he’s really felt his body do something inhuman and he hates it. He calls. It might be Jii. It might be Nakamori-keibu for all he knows. He can’t lift the phone to his ear so it sits on his collarbone picking up the rushed, pained sound of his breaths.
Someone picks up, male, can’t identify further, Kaito tries for words and ends up choked and hurt sounding and notes an uptick in alarm in the voice on the other end. In the end, “Please,” is all he can manage before his hand can’t hold the phone anymore.
Maybe he lost too much ‘blood’ or maybe there’s too much feedback for whatever he has for a brain. Regardless, the world cuts out, like something does a soft reboot, and when he comes back he’s on the ground and someone is trying to hold him still.
Kaito panics when a hand presses against his wrists, like his arms pinned down at the doctor’s lab, like handcuffs, but he has no leverage, no strength to fight it now. He whines, a whirring, glitching sound, and he must be broken beyond repair. He’s broken and a machine can die, like the robot died, like the real Kaito died and there won’t be even this echo left to keep people from crying about his loss—!
“Kuroba, calm down, Kuroba, Kuroba, Kaito!”
He stares up at a face that resolves itself to be Hakuba. Shit. Shit. He’s dead and compromised. His lungs choose that moment to glitch. Or maybe it’s just a run of the mill panic attack. He seems to have those a lot lately.
“Dammit,” Hakuba says, under his breath and scared. “Kuroba, is there anyone that knows how to fix this? I… I can’t take you to the hospital,” he says. His voice breaks and there’s nothing about this situation that’s right.
“Pro-fessor!” Kaito chokes out. “Phone.” The Professor’s number is in there with Jii’s and Hakuba lets his wrists go to scramble for it.
There’s swearing and then frantic words he can’t focus on as his vision blinks again. When it blinks back there’s Hakuba above him, very clear compared to a moment ago, or maybe he just reset again. He’s streaked with red and terrified.
“Am I dying?” Kaito asks. It’s like the second blink cut off parts of his system. He can’t feel half his limbs. It’s less painful but more alarming.
“Someone’s coming,” Hakuba says. Hakuba’s touching his hair. Or face? Maybe more? It’s so hard to tell. Hakuba isn’t someone who likes touch…
“Meant to call Jii,” Kaito says. “Sorry.”
“Don’t bloody apologi—”
Blink, a car’s headlights overly bright. Blink, a table, fear spiking because he’s strapped down again and no, he doesn’t want to die or be replaced, he doesn’t want— Blink, pain in his leg, but he can feel his leg again, but his eyes aren’t working, just sounds he can’t process, voices, two, three men. Blink, screaming that he registers as his own as suddenly he can feel everything all at once and it hurts, hurts, yelling in the background—
Kaito wakes in a medical cot. His eyes work fine. The buzzing in his head has stopped. He tries to move and feels a dull ache through his whole body and sharper throbs from his chest, shoulder, and right leg. Ah. He was shot, crashed the glider. He had managed to badly damage metal bones in his leg and goodness knew what to the flesh-like part of it. Kaito bruises so who knows how bad a mess his body is now. His body. Mechanical, but it’s his. It’s the only thing that’s wholly his own and not a dead man.
He wonders if pain meds still work on him because he has a feeling he should be hurting more than he is. It takes a bit of effort to glance down, but he can see that his leg is splinted even through the blanket covering him, and his left arm is in a sling.
Kaito heals fast. He’s healed fast since… Well, he can’t remember if he’s healed fast his whole human life or if it’s been faster since he became a robot, but he knows it’s faster than it should be. The bruise on his chest had healed in a week. His cut finger, two days. This is painful, but if it was fixed properly, it will heal fast too.
There’s a drip attached to his hand. He still has a circulatory system, so it has to be inserted there. He must have lost a lot of blood. Or whatever it is that runs through his body.
“Ah, you’re awake.”
Kaito’s head jerks toward the door making him hiss with discomfort; moved too fast.
The Professor holds up a hand like he thinks Kaito’s some kind of scared animal to be pacified. “We were worried we were going to lose you for a bit there, but you seem to be recovering quickly.”
“How long?”
“About two days.”
Both more and less than he was expecting. “Was anything broken beyond repair?”
And the Professor looks… unsettled. Maybe by Kaito’s blank face, or maybe remembering the mess Kaito was in. “One of your leg bones had to be replaced and the knee rewired. I’m not a roboticist or a surgeon,” he says a slight pinch to his brow, “so I can’t say if it went completely right until you try to use your leg, but I did the best I was able.”
Kaito stares a long moment. Remembers flashes of agony. Something in him pushes that memory away. “How bad was my head messed up?”
There’s a longer pause. “There were a few loose wires but as far as we could tell, that is it. When we replaced them…”
Ah. That would have been when he came to screaming. Or maybe that was the leg bone being replaced. Goodness knows Kaito can’t tell. He’d think that his memory should be crystal clear since he’s a robot, but no, it’s just as muddled as anyone human’s would be from a major traumatic incident. Well, if he could feel and cry and panic, why not have massive memory blanks from hormones and or loose wires?
“…I can’t remember much,” Kaito confesses. He doesn’t remember the Professor getting there, at least he doesn’t think he does.
“Kounosuke and your young friend were very worried,” the Professor says, taking a seat by Kaito’s side. He looks at something just outside Kaito’s view and a twitch of his head reveals a computer screen with numbers on it. Belatedly, he realizes there are wires trailing from it to him and feels… He doesn’t feel. He’s too tired for that emotion to properly form. “They stayed and helped with the repairs. I don’t think I’d have been able to manage it without help. You were rather busted up.”
“That happens when you fall four stories and through a tree after getting shot,” Kaito says numbly. Then, “Friend?”
“Er, Hakuba, I believe his name was?”
Kaito closes his eyes. Hakuba. Shit, right, he’d somehow called Hakuba instead of Jii, Hakuba who was already chasing Kid and probably had had an idea of Kaito’s trajectory even before he went down. No wonder Hakuba had been the one to find him. Hakuba has to have so many questions. Actually, Kaito has questions because Hakuba had just accepted that Kaito wasn’t human and went straight to trying to help him anyway. “When am I getting arrested?” he asks.
“Eh?”
“That ‘friend’ is a detective. I assume there’s only so long before the police show up.” He pauses. “Though I’m not sure about how they’ll process a robot. I can’t imagine I have any rights once that’s revealed.”
There’s silence and when Kaito opens his eyes, Agasa is looking at him like he’s both crazy and someone to be concerned about. “I don’t think your… the detective is going to be calling the police, Kuroba-san.”
“No? That would be a first. He’s only tried to unmask me every time we interact.” Hakuba’s not a bad person. He isn’t. He’s just a jerk and very single-minded about uprooting everything Kaito has worked for.
“…I… don’t think that’s a current concern,” the Professor says hesitantly. “He seemed more worried about your survival than your identity or any sort of legalities.”
“Huh. Priorities I guess.” He would put a life above the law. Again, Hakuba’s not bad he’s just kind of a stick in the mud. Kaito should probably feel a little bad about thinking that. Hakuba did just save his butt. At the same time, he’s done very little until now to give Kaito warm and fuzzies. “Are either of them still here?”
“Kounosuke is making some phone calls, but Hakuba-san is resting. Neither wanted to leave before you woke up.”
Kaito nods. At least he can do that much. Move his head. Wiggle his fingers. “Thank you for fixing me. You didn’t have to, but I’m kind of glad to not be a bunch of scrap metal and questionable mush.”
Agasa looks disturbed again. “Of course,” he says like anyone would do that. Like anyone would see a person-shaped robot and try to fix it instead of letting it die like the abomination of nature whatever he is more accurately resembles. “Do you have any questions? Need anything to eat or drink?”
Kaito is thirsty and has plenty of questions, but he shakes his head.
“I’ll go let the others know you’re better,” Agasa says and leaves in a hurry.
Kaito tips his head toward the drip going into him. Saline. Probably, though he can’t know for sure. There’s an empty bag in the bedside trash with traces of dark liquid. Replacement ‘blood’. It should honestly probably be in a biohazard waste for all he knows what its makeup is. Maybe he could ask Hakuba to put it through a few lab tests. Not like he didn’t already with a stray hair. The hair’s a scary thing. Kaito’s not sure if the mad doctor must have taken some of Kaito’s human hair and seeded in with synthetic or if it really isn’t synthetic at all. If it’s not that just brings up more questions that Kaito isn’t sure he wants answers for. As much as a part of him is curious, he really doesn’t want to know what he’s made up of. Knowing would make him even less human than he already is.
