"It doesn't matter. I was a full-grown warrior by the time I found out that you and Leafpool were my parents. I don't need to be your kit. Bramblestar was the only father we knew, and he was a great one. He'll always be my father, no matter what. […] I'm not angry with you. I accept your apology, and I'm grateful for the way it all turned out." — Lionblaze

re: a father having no claim on his half clan kits - the mother also made the same mistake but gets rewarded for it? she automatically gets to keep her kits and that’s that? kinda seems unfair. like sure maybe she gets some scrutiny from within her clan but i’m sure in time that fizzles out… so why is the father punished so heavily by having absolutely no right to his own kits even if the mother is dead?
Sure is unfair, isn't it? That's Clan life for you.
That's not to say the queen is rewarded, really. She's lost the respect of her Clanmates, usually rights to go to Gatherings (possibly permanently), and it will be a very long time before she's trusted with a mouse, let alone near the border. Her kits will have to grow up knowing what they are and that their existence is a massive betrayal to the code, likely developing a resentment towards their mother, or at least emotional distance. Any Clan cat that hears about this litter will immediately develop disdain and contempt towards the queen - her reputation is tarnished for as long as she lives, if not beyond that. So sure, she keeps her kits, but I wouldn't call it a net positive.
As for the father: sadly, Clan mate culture is pretty slanted against toms. They're seen to have one opportunity to be a father before they're out of the gene pool in the name of keeping things clean and organized. A tom who mates with an outsider has just stricken his blood off the list, whether or not that outsider decides to join the Clan - and if they don't, he's wasted his genetics on cats that essentially don't exist as far as his community is concerned. It's not fair, but it's just how things worked out in the modern day.
There's also the law to factor into this. The entire reason queens are the primary right-holders to their babies (and their Clans as second-place) is because so many battles happened over who got to keep a half-Clan litter, and eventually a rule had to be put in place to avoid unnecessary bloodshed in the future. Stripping the father of his claim to his children has saved a lot of lives down the generations. The Clans aren't particularly keen on protecting his feelings when they could be not killing each other over kits that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Overall, it's just easier, safer and more sensible to have the direct mother of the litter be in control of her kits and leave the father out of it. The only chance he has is if she or her Clan (if she's dead) give the kits to him to raise, but that's an extremely rare occurrence.

HalfClan, Moons 1-6
(I'll be doing patrols on each even moon because uh... I want to.)
Moon 1:
Frogpaw becomes a warrior, with Nectarheart as her mentor. Roachheart gives Frogpaw something (blue feathers) as a congratulations. How sweet!
Tumblr media
Frogpaw. She is now strange!
Brackentail decides to always carry some catmint around.
Tumblr media
Brackentail and her catmint. Are we nervous about something, Brackentail?
Not much else happens. Marigoldpaw and Frogpaw begin to become friends (Frogpaw asks Marigoldpaw how she's doing, while Marigoldpaw talks to Frogpaw about training.)
Cricketstar gets into a small spat with Mousedapple, as well as saying something that rubbed Brackentail the wrong way, but she's also found herself to be really positive to Brackentail.
Additionally, Roachheart tries to make sure Mousedapple is following the warrior code. Mousedapple is just losing this moon.
Moon 2:
Patrol time! I'm sending the apprentices and their mentors out.
On patrol: Nectarfoot (patrol leader), Mousedapple, Marigoldpaw, and Frogpaw.
Although they went out, meaning to patrol the territory and teach the apprentices about different scents, a rabbit bursts out from cover, startled by the patrol. The mentors decide that this is a great opportunity for the apprentices to learn different hunting tactics, and Nectarfoot rallies the patrol nearly instantly. Together, they manage to corner and catch the rabbit!*
End patrol.
Frogpaw and Marigoldpaw go on a walk together! How sweet. I'm glad they're getting along.
Cricketstar finds the way Marigoldpaw acts increasingly uncomfortable. Not sure why she's beefing with a kid, but Roachheart also finds Cricketstar's actions increasingly uncomfortable, and Mousedapple complains about Cricketstar. Hopefully this is growing pains and not a sign of something deeper.
Marigoldpaw saw Jasperstream miss an easy catch, and Jasperstream is worried that he'll never accomplish as much as Alderfur. Poor guy. It's tough going from being a kittypet to a warrior.
Moon 3:
The apprentice friendship continues, as Frogpaw listens to Marigoldpaw talk about how hard training has been. However, Marigoldpaw wishes that she had Frogpaw's mentor instead. :( Mousedapple is trying his best.
Alderfur wishes that Jasperstream won't take his duties more seriously, but Jasperstream makes sure that Marigoldpaw knows they are loved!
It's Turtlerun's time to beef with everyone. I suppose he woke up on the wrong side of the nest. Cricketstar heard a ugly rumor about Turtlerun, spread by either Mousedapple or Alderfur.
Moon 4:
Mousedapple travels to the other clans to bring them an important message about how HalfClan has now fully spread to the edges of the last Clan's territory, and as such they are now ready to go to Gatherings.
Patrol time!
On patrol: Cricketstar, Brackentail, Turtlerun, Jasperstream, and Roachheart
As the medicine cat's patrol goes onto HalfClan territory. Cricketstar tells Brackentail about the dream they had last night, and what the vision could mean for HalfClan. Intrigued, both Brackentail and Jasperstream set about trying to decipher this message. By the time the patrol returns to camp, they have a solid idea of what to do with the information.
End patrol.
Frogpaw catches Marigoldpaw complaining about her behind her back, while Marigoldpaw is reading a bit too far into Frogpaw's kindness. Oh no!
Jasperstream continues to not do a lot of work, while Mousedapple apologizes to Turtlerun for hurting his feelings.
Moon 5:
Cricketstar calls the Clan to a meeting, and declares Marigoldpaw to be a warrior. They are called Marigoldfrost and celebrated for their thoughtfulness.
Tumblr media
Marigoldfrost! They are now fierce, as well as an excellent speaker. Guess they learned something from Mousedapple after all!
Just before their ceremony, however, Frogpaw tells Marigold that her pelt looks like it's a different color today. Also, Mousedapple never realized until now how much they love spending time with Marigoldfrost. I guess you never know how good you have it until it's gone.
Moon 6:
Patrol time!
On patrol: Cricketstar, Marigoldfrost, Nectarfoot, and Frogpaw
The patrol goes to mark the border lines, but a gang of rogues bursts from the bushes in an ambush. Marigoldfrost, fierce as she is, leads the patrol in without a second thought, and they drive the rogues away unscathed.
End patrol.
Marigoldfrost, Jasperstream, and Frogpaw have been spending time together recently. Frogpaw shares her prey with Jasperstream, while Marigoldfrost tells him about a hunting technique. However, there are rumors going around-- Jasperstream heard an ugly rumor about Roachheart, while Alderfur caught him in a lie.
***
(Patrol, Moon 2)
*The early spring weather blew a gust of wind through the trees, bringing with it scents from the other Clans. Nectarfoot weaved through the trees, leading the patrol toward their border with QuietClan.
"Now, Frogpaw, what do you smell?" she prompted.
"Hm?" Frogpaw said, snapping back into focus. "Sorry, what was that?" Nectarfoot sighed. "Frogpaw, you'll never become a warrior with your head in the clouds like that. What do you smell?"
"Rabbit," Marigoldpaw said.
"What?" Nectarfoot waved her tail confusedly. "No, it's-"
"She's right!" shouted Mousedapple, startling. "Look!"
From underneath the oak tree, a rabbit exited its warren, thumping its way toward the moor of FlowerClan's territory. Nectarfoot laid eyes on it, shouting instantly, "Marigoldpaw! Frogpaw! Get in front of it!"
The two apprentices leapt into action, splitting up around the trees and outspeeding the rabbit. Mousedapple and Nectarfoot worked alongside each other as though they had done it for moons, matching pawstep to pawstep as they ran the rabbit into the apprentices. Marigoldpaw lunged for the kill, snapping the rabbit's neck.
"Good job, everyone!" Nectarfoot panted, her eyes glowing as she looked at the patrol. "Well done!"

Taking a quick detour from the modern cats, since her mother got a new ref sheet, it only seemed fair for Mistystar to get one as well. ^^ So here she is!
You can find the reverse side of her design here.
For her physical description, Mistystar is described as a lithe she-cat with thick, sleek fur, and a plumy tail. As before, she's the image of her mother, but with a slightly longer coat. She has about the same scars as before.
For her pattern, Mistystar is described as a blue-gray she-cat with a pink nose and ice-blue eyes. Same explanation for her pelt being darker rather than pale as her mother had. She has the same colors as her old ref sheet, except for the scars, which are lighter.
Overall, I'm really happy with how she turned out.

Ooh, another based "Shellheart gets too much hype in canon" truther? Is it because he actually does shockingly little to stop or protest Rainflower's treatment of Crookedstar as a kit, or something else?
It's a few things honestly, all of them bug me just enough to make me pretty steadfast in feeling like Shellheart is overrated;
Crooked's renaming feels so preventable. Really, Dad Shellheart? You have no say in this? You can't protest this??
You too Hailstar, what the fuck. Leaders are theocratic dictators 90% of the time but TODAY you feel like just letting this woman involve your entire Clan in her emotional abuse?
So it feels like lip service, "Omg Rainflower's being so awful! Don't worry though us powerful men can still be likeable because we don't like this :( too bad our all-powerful hands are tied."
Shellheart wasn't very involved with his children BEFORE denouncing Rainflower, so he does this whole big show of it and theeeeen..... nothing changes.
I'm reminded of how deadbeat fathers will sometimes blow into town with a whirlwind of big talk about doing something big for their neglected family, only to be gone again before Christmas.
Or, worse, the idea that Shellheart ONLY stopped being official mates with Rainflower because he's deputy, and it would look awful if he did nothing at all in the face of such an unpopular situation. Washing his hands of it.
And listen. I know people will staunchly refuse to acknowledge that these aren't real people, they are WRITING CHOICES. But please. I'm begging everyone to stick with me for a goddamn second
Ask yourself these critical thinking questions:
Why have the writers chosen for the mother to be solely responsible for Crookedstar's childhood abuse, whilst portraying Shellheart's solitary big public denouncement as the pinnacle of fatherhood? As he's barely involved in his children's lives?
Do they functionally portray Shellheart as a father who helps his son through maternal neglect? Or are the scenes quite rare? If yes, then what did the author spend their time on instead?
Consider the narrative of Crookedstar's other main antagonist, Mapleshade. Does Mapleshade's backstory have any similarities to Rainflower? Consider the choice to give Crookedstar two cruel maternal figures who act on malice towards him as paternal figure Shellheart goes unexamined.
Is this a pattern that we have seen before? Are fathers typically held to a different standard in Warrior Cats?
I feel strongly that the answer is an obvious yes. So Shellheart, and all the praise and cooing he gets, bothers me immensely.

So post mentions that the Queen can give the kits away (or an Equal Authority). I can see why the Queen could do it for multitudes of reasons (safety in houses/desire for them to know their other parent/something else?). But what would be the reasoning for an Equal Authority (Leader or Matriarch? Or Seer even) to give the kits away?
Also how is the Queen viewed should she give her kits away? Or what if she opposes the decision that the Authority makes in giving the kits away?
The queen has complete authority on where her kits live and grow, assuming she's still alive. If the leader or deputy or anyone tried to hand the kits over to the other Clan, she can easily veto them and keep the kits with her. That also includes choosing to send them away (possibly going with them) even if her leader orders or her Clanmates want otherwise. Just making that clear.
A queen letting her kits go is usually viewed negatively, but if she's got a good reason for it and is visibly devastated by the decision, she gets a little more leeway. It's actually better for her if she leaves with them - that's seen as proper motherly dedication. She may not be welcome in the other Clan, but, as we've said before on this blog, the Clans hesitate to break up families no matter where they come from, so she'd 99/100 times be allowed into the community. Even if she does get dirty looks or gets ignored.
Now, in terms of assuming the leader has control of the situation (the queen either being dead or leaving it up to him to make the decision), he's got a couple reasons to send kits away:
Trying to keep the peace in a hostile time by doing this "favor" for his potential enemies.
Personal bias against a half-Clan litter, possibly backed up by his Clanmates.
Alternatively, protecting the kits and queen from the anger of his Clanmates due to their heritage.
Lack of rations to keep the queen and her litter fed while the other Clan is eating well.
Saving the kits from a disease ravaging his Clan.
Punishing the queen for treason (assuming she doesn't go with the kits).
Appeasing his native Clan who want those kits gone.
Returning a favor to the other Clan.
Helping boost the numbers of the other Clan in a time where they've lost a lot of their own.
And so on.
If a leader is giving away kits, it's usually out of pragmatism. There's the occasional punishing, discriminatory reaction, but rarely do kits get sent away without good reason. They and queens are the most precious resource the Clans have - you REALLY need to justify tossing that resource away.

HalfClan (ClanGen)-- Initial Allegiances
I was talking about doing this, but I'm currently home sick, so let's rock and roll!
Rules:
I'll be playing on ClanGen Classic Mode. I don't have the time to micro-manage patrols and all, so if I didn't everyone Would Die.
Mass extinctions are off, affairs, same-sex relationship, and kits are on.
What happens, happens! If someone dies or relationships change, I won't be going into the code to modify it.
On a similar note, I'll only be interacting with the Clan using things like the mediator, and only that scarcely. This also includes the relationships the cats get into! I will not be changing those, regardless of age gaps or mentor/relation status. Let the dice fall where they may. Patrols will advance as I see fit.
I'll do complete allegiances and images of all the cats when there's a major incident (i.e., a leader change, or if there's been a major event). Cats will get their own separate new image on major events to them like promotion or retirement.
I'll write short snippets of events I personally find interesting, but if you want something else written about, feel free to let me know.
Now, let's get right into it!
HalfClan is the newest of the four forest Clans, neighboring QuietClan, MistleClan, and FlowerClan. They live in the remains of a former Clan's territory, clearing out the underbrush and making use of the old Clan's camp. They got their name due to the insults the other three would shoot back at them, being that they were half-Clan cats, half kittypets, loners, and rogues. Despite the insults, the other three Clans currently seem content to respect their territorial claims and leave them be, allowing HalfClan to grow and truly become a Clan in their own right.
While they are young and small, they are no less fierce than any of the other three, and are champing at the bit to test their power and become a true Clan.
Allegiances:
Leader: Cricketstar - a long-furred dark ginger ticked tabby she-cat
Deputy: Mousedapple - a short-furred dark grey tabby tom.
Apprentice: Marigoldpaw
Medicine Cat: Brackentail - a medium-furred dark grey she-cat
Warriors: Jasperstream a medium-furried pale ginger and white tom
Turtlerun - a medium-furred black tom
Roachheart - a medium-furred silver rosetted tom
Nectarfoot - a medium-furred cream she-cat
Apprentices: Marigoldpaw - a medium-furred cream she-cat
Elders: Alderfur - a medium-furred golden she-cat
Kits: Frogkit - a long-furred dark brown she-cat
Images of the Clan below!
Tumblr media
Cricketstar
40 moons
remaining lives: 9
strict, good hunter
Cricketstar (warrior name: Cricketcry) is a former warrior from MistleClan. On hearing of the original Clan's dissolution, she was sent on a patrol to discover what was going on. Things got a bit out of hand as she stumbled on the few remaining cats, and soon she was announced as the first leader of HalfClan. While she misses her home, she is excited to be a leader, and is ready to prove her worthiness to her new Clanmates and StarClan.
Tumblr media
Mousedapple
14 moons
deputy
apprentice: Marigoldpaw
careful, great speaker
Mousedapple (formerly Mouse) is the child of a loner who once lived on the original Clan's outskirts. Upon hearing of the Clan's dissolution, his mother took him into the territory to see if they could take over their hunting grounds. Unfortunately, they encountered one of the Clan's last patrols, and his mother died. Feeling bad, he was taken in and raised alongside their own, and when Cricketstar arrived to help, he was one of her earliest supporters, considering himself her defacto apprentice. While he is very young, he has already proven himself quite a charismatic fellow and is beloved by much of the Clan.
Tumblr media
Brackentail
59 moons
medicine cat
righteous, great fighter
Brackentail is one of the other MistleClan cats which joined up with HalfClan. While she was a warrior with MistleClan, she decided to let her paws lead her down a different route, and has become HalfClan's first medicine cat. While she does not necessarily have the strongest connection to StarClan, she is an excellent medicine cat, although her sense of honor often clashes with Mousedapple's cautiousness. She is dedicated to propping HalfClan up to the glory of its predecessor, and isn't afraid to get involved in some sticky situations to do so.
Tumblr media
Jasperstream
74 moons
warrior
loving, strong connection to StarClan
Jasperstream, while solidly middle-aged, is a rather sweet and spry warrior. He was formerly a kittypet in a Twolegplace nearby, but was an outdoor cat who found his true calling inside the forest. He is close to StarClan, and though he was initially wary of Mousedapple and Cricketstar, he came around on reassurance from StarClan and is now one of their most loyal supporters. It is thought that he perhaps has descendants within the Clans, though he has no mate to speak of.
Tumblr media
Turtlerun
97 moons
warrior
bold, smart
Turtlerun is the third remaining MistleClan patrol members who joined HalfClan. He was tasked with keeping the members of his patrol safe, and has decided to take that order to his grave, even as Cricketstar receives her nine lives. He is fiercely loyal and spends his times often guarding the camp, making sure no one comes in unchecked.
Tumblr media
Roachheart
111 moons
warrior
righteous, smart
Roachheart is a former rogue from the Twolegplace, who defected from his rogue group on seeing the brutality present. In his senioor years, he is dedicated to keeping younger cats from going down the same paths he did, and sees HalfClan as one of the best ways to do so. His honor code is unwavering and often means he is on the correct side of the warrior code, but when they differ, it is often a case of teeth and claws.
Tumblr media
Nectarfoot
119 moons
warrior
sneaky, smart
Nectarfoot is a former queen from FlowerClan, having left upon the death of her kit. While she is somewhat disillusioned with the idea of a Clan, she knows that times are tough and a group is what's necessary to survive. Her Clanmates trust her, although they've noticed that her stories do not always properly align.
Tumblr media
Alderfur
124 moons
elder
fierce, valuable tactician
Alderfur, while being one of the sharpest tongues around, is a valuable member of HalfClan. She is one of the few remaining members of the original Clan, though her tongue is tied when it comes to their inevitable fate. She served them as a loyal warrior for seasons, and now serves HalfClan in the form of its first elder, giving aid and advice to its young leader and deputy when she feels it is needed-- even if Cricketstar and Mousedapple would beg to differ.
Tumblr media
Marigoldpaw
7 moons
warrior apprentice
strict
Marigoldpaw is a rather serious young cat, spending a lot of time training to be a warrior and not a lot of time playing as cats her age so often do. She was found alone at the outskirts of the woods, approaching the Twolegplace, and spoke little when the Clan initially took her in. Now, she's dedicated to being the best warrior ever, hoping to make herself into an apprentice that both her mentor and her Clan can be proud of.
Tumblr media
Frogkit
5 moons
kit
nervous
Frogkit's ancestry is entirely unknown. She was found in the territories, alone but weaned. It is thought that her mother may have been a loner who was taken out by the same things that took out the original Clan. She is nervous and unsure of her place in the Clan, looking forward eagerly to the day when she becomes an apprentice and can give back to the cats who took her in.
