BREAKING NEWS:

NOAA proposes national marine sanctuary in Papahānaumokuākea

Today, NOAA has released a draft proposal to designate a national marine sanctuary in the marine portions of Papahānaumokuākea. Home to the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, threatened green turtles and many species found nowhere else on earth, the complex and highly productive marine ecosystems of Papahānaumokuākea are significant contributors to the biological diversity of the ocean. 

Papahānaumokuākea is of great importance to Native Hawaiians, and Hawaiian culture is a foundational element in its management. It is also home to a variety of post-Western-contact historic resources, such as 19th-century commercial whaling shipwrecks and artifacts and those associated with World War II’s Battle of Midway.

The public is invited to comment on the sanctuary draft proposal through May 7, 2024.

Hunting is very much a part of local Hawaiian Culture. I think this pack of hunting dogs consisted of 12 dogs. They were all happy and looked healthy. Very well trained and loveinf on there Pop. We had passed two a ways back on the trail and I hope they make their way back to the pack. At sunset, it’s traditional to blow a shell horn. The first note of the horn is blown when the bottom of the sun touches the water. We have been working really hard for over 22 years trying to get this land back with research, learning administration, studying federal and kingdom laws, lineage history , training cousins on how to do the protocols and processes in order to get us here and currently occupying our family land of coco palms. Coco palms was pretty much home for my first 5 years of life , in the property pretty much all day everyday with my parents, my great-grandmother of Laka decent owned the property that runs along the auwai -original ditch that runs between and from the property farm land to the ocean- which is now County of Kaua’i and Bishop estate owned, and Coco Palms was my first job. The company tells her story in their book that is reminiscent to many.
