Mike Love - Permanent Holiday (SXSW 2014 Showcasing Artist)

I saw Mike Love for the second time the other day (this time was opening for Trevor Hall in Seattle, last time was opening for Nahko and Medicine for the People in Honolulu).

I'm convinced that he's the most talented person in reggae.

He has an insane vocal range, and explores a wide variety of techniques. His songwriting is unique, going beyond the typical pop structures, but creating powerful and hooky songs at the same time.

He's the most clever loop pedal users I've ever seen live - he does nearly everything with his bare feet, entirely seamlessly, pulling out harmonies for one part only once or twice while other sections are set up at the beginning or during the song and continue throughout. That's a lot of coordination.

And he's clever in how he uses it - this song is a perfect example. The bit he does in the middle with his layered vocals syllable by syllable is totally brilliant, creating order out of a chaos he set up himself. It's very smart an very skillful.

This is intelligent stuff. And it's all the more impressive when he's playing solo, although the addition of a percussionist that occasionally harmonizes is a nice addition.
